Large metal binder clips keep the halves together. Since it doesn't need to be air tight, you could probably just stick the thermometer between the halves and clip it, with minimal loss. Also the thermometer would give a temperature reading where the food is, not the top of the bowl."

Couple handfuls of sand for a riser. No pizza stones upsidedown bowls ect. Keep it simple

I’ve been using the DB oven for a couple of years. For an inside riser, I cut a tin can to the optimum height. I do like your temp gauge/handle.

Bob, you can eliminate much of that initial sliding if you give it a little whack from a center punch where you want to drill the hole. Since I've gotten older and hike less, and bought a van for car camping, I got one of those Coleman folding ovens for that sort of thing.

    • @Bob808Knight
      @Bob808Knight  4 роки тому +1

Yes I should have used the center punch. Next time I shall do that.
Oh sweet you bought a van. Now you can build the ultimate road trip vehicle. And there's nothing wrong with car camping. I do it all the time in my van. If you get a chance search my videos for the ultimate road trip vehicle. You'll see what I'm talking about.
I've got an old folding Coleman propane stove. I think I bought it back in the early 90s. I have never had a problem with it...

I've been working on a similar project. Instead of all that drilling, look at either mesh sink drain baskets or even a stainless steel kitchen sink stopper. Remove the rubber and change out the handle with a small bolt. Drill a hole in the middle of the pizza stone and put the bolt through it. I also have a few ideas of using the dog bowl concept and turning it into a mine Big Green egg type of komodo cooler. Let me know if your interested.

When I want to soft bake something I can still add a few ounces of water to make steam and it holds the heat well after the flame is removed. How did the game hens turn out?? Good video!

It sounds like the cooking method you are using is dry baking? I don't know how the bird cooks are going to do with that method. Generally you need moisture to keep the cornish hens or turkeys moist. You may want to look into that first! Instead of the holes for the inside bowl, maybe use 3-4 nuts to raise the bowl off the bottom for ventilation? You pooch is an alien hunter! Where can I find that expanded metal? I have a charcoal grill application for that material myself! Have a great Christmas Bob!

Nice ! Firstly .. TY Kenneth for the genesis of this idea . Very well done and explained . Am a little curious why you didn't just use expanded metal again though ? Also . I wonder if the grate / grill / rack from one of those disposable camping grills would set in there ? Very nicely done Mr Robert !! BTW , see your dog doesn't like me either :D .. gubs ... P.S . I like Arf oven better :D

Thanks brother... Ken has inspired some of my projects. But don't tell him that I don't wanted to go to his head. LOL
To answer your question about the expanded metal. I haven't buried in my storage unit and I'm too lazy to dig it out.. when do my annual spring cleaning I will dig it out and make a expanded metal riser for the oven...

Thanks Bob for the overview of the oven.👍👍 I too took Ken Kramm' s idea for the cardboard oven. I have all three sizes that he built. Now I want to copy and use your idea and build one of those ovens. Were those larger one you have the 9"dog bowl? I Have done some experiments baking with the two smaller bowls together and binder clips to hold them shut. Did think of a temp gauge. 👏👏

No problem Guy.. I have to admit Ken does comes up with some pretty good ideas.
Absolutely steal my idea. If you come up with a better or a more efficient design please let me know..
I got all the dog bowls from Wally World. I accidentally found the temperature gauge at Lowes.
I think I've got a total of $40 wrapped up in the project. That's not including the pizza stone. That was $19.
Have a merry Christmas and I shall talk to you later my friend..

Put ceramic pie weights in the bottom of the oven then the expanded metal grate ... Also an expanded metal trivet legs that hold the oven "about"2 inches above the coals... that should help to keep the stainless steel from over heating... it worked on mine that I made in 2016. I also made a trivet for the top to hold the top coals... with a lot of experimentation I have baked biscuits, cookies, pies, cakes, a turkey breast, ham,a small prime rib, BBQ ribs, chicken maleness not to mention bread... nearly everything that can be baked it your over at home can be baked in a dog bowl oven just don't be afraid to experiment till you get it right...

That's an excellent tip brother. I will incorporate this in my next design. Quick question as you know I'm going to be cooking a Cornish hen in mine soon. What do you use to catch the drippings? Maybe an aluminum foil Bowl? Talk to you later and have an awesome week...
