For anyone looking to use what they've got, you jsut need a pot with lid (not aluminum so it doesnt melt) a cheap foil tray/bowl and something to get it off the bottom of the pot. I love the way Mark Young shows - two dog bowls and paper clips to hold them together. Can be used as pots as well.
Simon, what a fantastic supportive dad and son relationship. Tom is doing brilliant and great you have these cooking moments together. I totally get it - we're on the same journey as you. All the very best !!
Tom, U hang on and stay with ur dad get all the camping skill u can. Let me tell u, ur dad, a PRO. He's good, U got the best man for u. Simon a bloke in the woods teach him well. THANKS SIMON KEEP THEM COMING!!!
Simon, It is always wonderful to see the two of you together and I hope you are going to do a repairing the canoe video as it would be great to watch. Thanks as always.
The great thing is, other than doing things with your son, is that when in a couple of years if he gives up on "all that crap", he will still remember it if necessary! I "lost" my son for nearly twenty years but he is back now!
I learnt about Dutch ovens from Kent Rollins in the US, it is amazing the things you can make in a Dutch oven with a bit of practice and know how. Roasting pork shoulder with crispy cracking was a particular fav of mine.
Simon, great to see you and Tom in the woods again!!! Simon just make the oven, you have the skills and the skills will pay the bills if you make and sell them, like your folding saw and your canoe trailer!!! Another great video...
I have been a bit inspired by them and have some stainless steel that I might be able to press into use - hmmmmm - a bit of shed time coming up I think!

@@northwestolympics3001 good to know. I haven't really looked at dutch ovens since I got an enameled one as a gift and camping wise do most of my cooking in a wok.
Unlike Simon I'm no campfire cooking guru but I learnt a tip a while back. Two metal dog bowls fastened together on the lip with bulldog clips also work as an oven. Simon is my go to 1st port of call for bushcraft tips. His open canoeing exploits are also informative if intending to canoe in those respective waters.
Very interesting. Good to have to have a scone while camping. I really like the reflector oven - what a great idea. Fun to have you son cooking with you. Thanks for sharing.
The perfect video for my first episode back from our PEI vacation where I (with help from the nephews wife!) baked my first loaf of bread in my dutch oven! Turned out really well but pushed the limits of the amount of dough for my sized oven! Great to see Tom out with you and thanks for another great video!
Hi, Simon! If, hypothetically, a viewer from the States were to send you the stuff from here you want, would that save you paying whatever the import tax is? I don't know how that all works, but I would be more than happy to be your contact here for all the fun gear you're searching for! Thank you for all your wonderful content, and sending greetings to Tom, Maggie, and Mrs. A Bloke In The Woods!
UK Import Duty, Tax and Handling Charges are based on the stated value of the item written on the Customs form when the item is sent from the US. Were the sender to list the value as $5 that would result in none of the above Duties, Taxes and Charges applying.
I actually looked up the cost to ship stuff from the US to the UK and it is pretty pricey. $41 to ship a small package up to 4lbs, an ounce over that and the price doubles. I have ordered in things from all over the world and shipping into the US for an equivalent package is usually closer to $25. I can see why US produced stuff is such a no go for British bushcrafters.
These videos always manage to calm me down after a stressful week. Thank you for re-invigorating me to get back out into the woods Simon. Great video. Keep it up!
Happened upon this channel after watching hiking and camping videos and I’m amazed. Didn’t know there was so much to do with Tarps, never heard of a swag! I’m loving all the chopping fire building. That’s one thing me and my sons can do is make a fire with no matches. Done that many a time on the beach. I’m going to set up a wood store and fire pit area in the garden. And going to get myself and my sons out there this winter learning all this stuff. The videos are amazing. Wish I’d found these sooner. Thanks for all the great entertainment and teaching. Love from The Isle of Wight 😀
Oh boy now that is a hand full to watch mate (all the food at once), good job Tom was with you on this one. Just the one batch slightly burnt, not bad at all pal. I'd love a Dutch oven but in the mean time while saving I'll pick up the 14" Billy I reckon mate. Thanks for this week's upload Simon, speak yo you soon pal 👍
It was wonderful to see the love and respect shown to you by your son, I really enjoyed this, Simon. My husband liked the look of the burnt ones; he charcoals everything. I love scones full stop. And cake and pudding :)
Who doesn't love a good scone? They looked awesome. An alternative to cast iron we have in Australia is the spun steel 'Bedourie' camp oven. Not really designed for hiking, but much ligher and less brittle than cast iron. A lot of people swear by them.
Great job on comparing the different stoves. Awesome that Tom could make an appearance with you - it's always great to see father & son spending time together - especially during the teenage years :-)
Lovely. Nice to see you both sharing some time out and about and baking in the woods. I need to have a crack at using my Zebra Billy for a bit of baking.
I always enjoy when you have Tom on your videos. It looks like he enjoys getting out into the woods with you even if it's just to the back garden to cook a lasagna. Doing those kinds of things as a father/son team is the best kind of time spent. It makes me happy that you two are doing that before Tom is done with school and decides to strike out on his own. I didn't get to have that many trips/outings with my father growing up due to his work schedule but I cherish every single one of them. I'm sure you and Tom will/do too. If you want I can pick up one of these Bemco ovens and post it over to you from here in the states if it's something you think you'll get some use out of. -Shane
Thanks Shane - definitely have to grab these opportunities while I can before he loses interest! Thank you, very kind of you to offer to send one over - the shipping is a killer! I think I’m going to have a go at making one. 👍👍
I'M WITH TOM on the SULTANAS. Although, I use dark currants in much of my biscuit and coffee cake baking! It was FASCINATING to see your comparison of 'ovens.' My 'takeaway' is that a larger billycan oven would be more forgiving in baking a few biscuits since more heated air would also act to insulate the 'product' from the fierce heat of the fire.
Another wonderful video thanks! Dutch ovens are my favorite when I have room but I often just bring my 8" Lodge cast iron skillet with lid for baking. I added a socket to the handle and use a stick. This and a billy can are all I need on a camping trip. I like to move a few the coals just off the fire and bake on that so I can reduce the heat. It's so easy to burn bread if you just stick cast iron in the fire. I demonstrate all this on my video channel.
Great video! Dutch oven is definitely the most controlled method - as the cast iron gives great, even heat distribution. It's always great to see fathers and sons enjoying the woods together. My eldest is 5 and loves coming to the woods with me for a hot chocolate and a mooch around.
You, Andy and a couple of others make for really good viewing on a Wednesday, way way better than anything on TV, I just wanted to say that.
