I was fortunate to live in Austin during the late 70's through the 90's and got to see Blaze Foley, Townes, Steve Earl, John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Kean, Joly Ely, Billy Jo Shaver and many more live back when music was real.
The black man was a walking blacksmith -- traveled from place to place with his tools to fix horses, other metallic items -- tools (he could make tools as well), railings, fences. His real name was Uncle Seymour Washington -- 1896-1979 / RIP. He's worth remembering in your prayers. Back in 1975, the director would've been smart to film an hour of Seymour's philosophy of life and not just the 5 minutes he did the film. Interesting dude, I can see why Townes befriended him and took him along for his movie. Uncle Seymour had a great personality, wonderful character, lived an incredibly rough life. Not afraid of hard work. His hands were like a leather baseball mitt. I never knew him but I liked him instantly. Great song to talk about Abracadabra 303.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the older gentleman in the background of the video who starts weeping to the song is Uncle Seymour, sort of a legend amongst the Austin folk community at the time and Townes Van Zandt’s neighbor during his stint in Austin. As the story goes, this song was played shortly after Uncle Seymour received a cancer diagnosis, one which he would later succumb to after refusing treatment in a care facility. Always breaks my heart when I see him break down in tears to that song. Also if i’m not mistaken this was filmed in his home in the Clarksville neighborhood of Austin, but I could very well be wrong about that.
5thcorps Sorry, that’s not right. Seymour Washington, the man in the clip, was a neighbor of Townes when he lived outside of Nashville in the 70s. The song is about an unnamed man Townes met in the Jester Lounge in Houston when he played there regularly there in the mid-60s.

Wasn't expecting to hear what I heard, Christ, the lyrics/story, the pain in that voice, the tempo, I was nearly in tears. Man, I was hooked. I will always remember that moment.

I heard Steve Earle talking about that film. Apparently he was filming Guy and Steve, but he did something they didn’t like so they banished him. Sent him off to find some guy called Townes in the back blocks at somewhere. The next thing Steve Earle said was “he god damn stole the show!”

Much respect for looking for Townes. He had a tragic life. He had bipolar depression as a very young man & his mother allowed horrific experimental treatments to be done to him. Afterward he became alcohol & drug addicted to try to dull his pain. I think he already knew his life wasn't going to end well.

Townes came to Australia. Long before I had heard of him. I tracked down the venue he plays in Melbourne. Still the same owner. A very off-beat poet. I met the guy that took Townes fishing on the Hawkesbury River for a few hours. Apparently once they got to a good spot, Townes kicked back and said, “I’m gonna have a little nap “ After his 2 hour nap, it was time to go. No fishing. Apparently Townes liked his naps.
Lungs, To Live is to Die and Nothing are my favorites. Dead Flowers is also amazing. The video for Nothin has that same old man in it and every time I see him tear up it makes my heartache. He didn't seem like a man that cried often. It was like all the pain in his life was felt at that moment.

Uncle Seymour, the older gentleman who tears up in the background had terminal cancer at that time. He was a sweet man. I met Townes and he was both a sweet man and also quite an asshole. Townes drank himself to death in his 50's. His son used to hang out in my nightclub in Austin. He was a partier back then but he got sober and now he's a fishing guide down on the Texas gulf coast.
@@abracadabra3033 Blaze Foley is another one to look into. He was a good friend of Townes' and another of those guys who never got the recognition he deserved. Clay Pigeons, World War III, If I Could Only Fly, and Cold Cold World are his best. Those last two are especially real.
There's something special about Townes van Zandt, I was immidiatly hooked when I heard him the first time but then I'm I a emotional person and write sad poetry too (sadly I can't make it to songs as I can't sing or play instruments). Music and artists like this is what I love with America, a gift to the world.

These guys lived life to the fullest and had many crazy stories and both died to young because of it but their music will never die.

I said basically the same things after i watched this video. I'd never heard of Townes 3 weeks ago. Great review, powerful. Finding new music of any kind is what makes music so great. And makes life bearable while we're waiting around to die..

Uncle Seymour, the older gentleman who tears up in the background had terminal cancer at that time. He was a sweet man. I met Townes and he was both a sweet man and also quite an asshole. Townes drank himself to death in his 50's. His son used to hang out in my nightclub in Austin. He was a partier back then but he got sober and now he's a fishing guide down on the Texas gulf coast.

@@abracadabra3033 Blaze Foley is another one to look into. He was a good friend of Townes' and another of those guys who never got the recognition he deserved. Clay Pigeons, World War III, If I Could Only Fly, and Cold Cold World are his best. Those last two are especially real.
There's something special about Townes van Zandt, I was immidiatly hooked when I heard him the first time but then I'm I a emotional person and write sad poetry too (sadly I can't make it to songs as I can't sing or play instruments).
Music and artists like this is what I love with America, a gift to the world.

Great review, I just discovered Townes he is one of the greatest songwriters ever. If you haven’t heard Blaze Folley check out Clay Pigeons another great unknown songwriter. These guys lived life to the fullest and had many crazy stories and both died to young because of it but their music will never die.
