I love these videos from Heartworn Highway! they are are all stoned/drunk as fuck, and yet make the best music ever!! makes me so sad that no one makes music like this anymore
Messy and brilliant in all the right ways. Musical gems like this will fall by the wayside for a few three four decades again, then they'll be rediscovered and recognized for what they meant in light of meaningful music, in that time, in that place, in the heart of America. A beautiful cycle it is indeed! Thanks for sharing!
Man, you gotta love Richard Dobson's songwriting. Unpolished and rough yet solid and original. It's a great core sample of the 'real' music and songwriting that came from the Northeast Texas area since long before his time and his lyrics are steeped in the culture, local jargon and general mindset of that particular region. "Flatwoods-" was an adj. used by locals to describe certain characteristics uniquely originating from that area. I grew up around people just like him. Same dialect, same mannerisms, everything. From what I remember he used to work as a 'roughneck' oilfielder around the Tyler and Kilgore area of Northeast Texas before saddling up with Guy Clark and gang and rolling out to Tennessee. Great Texas singer songwriter from a RICH and age-old TX tradition.
last drink for the evening....we're in the movies.....reminds me of someone I used to know any way this is most exellent Greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for the memories. .........god bless the outlaws....
I met Richard back in Tennessee back in the 80,s. He was a regular guy. I was surprised to see him in videos with Rodney Crowell and Guy Clark. I had no idea I was among royalty. Sure liked some of his music.
Oh yeah, this is GOOD S*#T!! The Heartworn HIghways DVD is a CLASSIC, no doubt! Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, David Allan Coe, a very young Steve Earle, ALL DANDIES!!
Drunk as a skunk, still tears it up. I wish there was more live videos of Richard playing in this setting. Anybody know who the woman was who had that little conversation with him? "I bet ya five dollars it's not your last drink"
@djs11 He does also roll the fifth on the A min, the open D string hammer on to E and has the added G on low E string from time to time on the A min as well. I did hear a E sus4 as well. Nice song.
"Five-hundred miles from the Mexican border The days getting shorter, the nights getting colder Hard by the highway he leans on her shoulder A little bit tired and a little bit older The days keep on running down through the seasons Running like prairie fire, wild with no reason The Devil's to pay for the moments he's seizing Still nothing is lost that's left to believe in He's got little to lose and his only companions Are the liquor that he loves, the rambling and the gambling The coyote answers from back in the canyon Hungry for more than plain understanding Sometimes it gets hard, sometimes it's amusing When kindness repaid is just an illusion When blind men know best what to make of confusion And dead men know nothing at all Still he dreams of a lady who'll lay down beside him He prays for the day when the sweet Lord will guide him To one who might drain all the poison inside him Let him hang up his boots with his traveling behind him But it's five-hundred miles from the Mexican border The days getting shorter, the nights getting colder As hard by the highway he leans on her shoulder A little bit tired, a little bit older

that guy brother ward shaffer ought to check out terry allen and the panhandle mystery band from the 70's 80's my personal favorite also butch hancock was is a great songwriter jmho
@blackestcracker I don't think he's actually pushing down. You can see the difference in finger position in the Amin and the G, the pinky is out further. Not that a passing C would be bad, make it a G sus4 chord, nice chord. But I don't think Mr. Dobson plays it here.
Anybody know of any newer Texas singer songwriters besides Hayes Carll in this old troubadour tradition? Send me a message with some suggestions. Can only play Townes, Steve, Guy, Dylan so long and need to see if anything new has surfaced. Damn sure won't hear it on any Oklahoma radio
Yeah, I love Colter Wall, he's from Canada. He's the reason I'm listening to this song. I never heard of Mr Dobson before now, and Colter just posted a pic of him on intsagram saying that he's died. What a shame, RIP :(
Thank god for that mean roadie lady. We may have lost maybe a top 10 ever preference to a senseless fire. He tries to pull him self together ..way out of everything and nails it...after his last drink of hard whisky for the night. That roadie sounds alot like a train wreck waiting to get an insurance claim. Shame on it for trying to be the center of attention. I wonder what it offered for being so tolerated
Lmao thanks for clearing that up, doubt you need a rodie when all you have is a guitar and a bottle of whiskey. Which is all richard dobson needed, and some cigarettes.

Such a great archive from that time. I was only a year old when this was filmed but would have loved to live through this.
Here and there I've found some beautiful things...
Oh we still make music like this. There just aint no camera’s around.
@@TheVirginianRambleryeap
The music is there - just waiting for you & your circle of friends to conjure it up...somewhere, anywhere...
This went remarkably well considering how things started! Awesome song.
😂. Thinking the same thing.
Great song, great artist !
We’re in the movies. That’s how all good things start
just being here as adrunk as a fucking song man!!!!!!!!!!
I saw Richard twice in Hull, Yorkshire, when local artist Mike Greaves brought him over. I wasn't aware that I was watching a legend at the time.
Luck runs like a fire for no reason

My name is Richard Dobson as well. What a coincidence, because I love this guy's music!
I saw this video a few years back and I had to learn this song! Everyone I play it for loves it... this was a magical time with magical music......
I like this guys coolness in the presentation. Very sure of himself and comfortable. Life should be like that. Listen to this several times.
ronhowarthservices he’s been drinkin
Love it! Sounds like he could have played it sitting around Guy and Suzanna Clark's kitchen table. Terrific song.
I met Richard back in Tennessee back in the 80,s. He was a regular guy. I was surprised to see him in videos with Rodney Crowell and Guy Clark. I had no idea I was among royalty. Sure liked some of his music.
He lived with Rodney Crowell and Skinny Dennis in Nashville when Guy and Townes would stop by.
Great song , still enchanted by it 14 years later
Oh yeah, this is GOOD S*#T!! The Heartworn HIghways DVD is a CLASSIC, no doubt! Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, David Allan Coe, a very young Steve Earle, ALL DANDIES!!
The steel guitar over that is wicked
Has to be Jim McGuire who is shown in "Heartworn Highways" playing the dobro in Guy Clark's kitchen.
It's in my shirt and it's burnin.
Sound like a good song
Wish I could've been there to light Richard's cigarette, but I was born in 1976.
I miss Richard he was a good friend...
Lucky you met him
hope to play guitar like this a day
love this song guy
Heartworn out and found these I'm vids! Love all tha artists on tha DVD HEART WORN HIGHWAYS
Spoken immediately like a true writer. "It's in my shirnt but it's burnt. First verse of his next song.
This better than the album version tbh
Rip richard.Precious video
this is so good!!!
Drunk as a skunk, still tears it up. I wish there was more live videos of Richard playing in this setting.
Anybody know who the woman was who had that little conversation with him?
"I bet ya five dollars it's not your last drink"
I'm guessing its Guy Clarkes Wife Suzanne
If you haven't already, watch Heartworn Highways. There is another scene with Richard. The entire film is outstanding.
thats Susanna Clark, Guys wife and Townes lover
Love his voice!
Rip friend
Amazing! I want to hang out with those guys.
To be a mediocre guitar picker in Guy Clarks kitchen that night… A history in Texas songwriting…
Rest In Peace, Guy.
That guitar sounds good
Martin D-18
Martin....finally bought a 000-15 mahogany. Best guitars ever made
@@HondoSauce They’re fantastic. I have a 1998 SPD-16 mahogany myself.

More of this!!! it’s 500 miles of hurt , from the Mexican border…
We're in the movies
that's a good song!
So good
"Five-hundred miles from the Mexican border
The days getting shorter, the nights getting colder
Hard by the highway he leans on her shoulder
A little bit tired and a little bit older
The days keep on running down through the seasons
Running like prairie fire, wild with no reason
The Devil's to pay for the moments he's seizing
Still nothing is lost that's left to believe in
He's got little to lose and his only companions
Are the liquor that he loves, the rambling and the gambling
The coyote answers from back in the canyon
Hungry for more than plain understanding
Sometimes it gets hard, sometimes it's amusing
When kindness repaid is just an illusion
When blind men know best what to make of confusion
And dead men know nothing at all
Still he dreams of a lady who'll lay down beside him
He prays for the day when the sweet Lord will guide him
To one who might drain all the poison inside him
Let him hang up his boots with his traveling behind him
But it's five-hundred miles from the Mexican border
The days getting shorter, the nights getting colder
As hard by the highway he leans on her shoulder
A little bit tired, a little bit older
