Nice video, thanks for sharing. FYI it looks like you overtightened your new drain valve. You tightened 1/4 turn, should have gone about half that. How are you liking the valve? I assume you attach a piece of tubing to the end for draining, correct? Looks convenient.

    • @SokhomGarage
      @SokhomGarage  Рік тому +1

You can attach a tube, or you can slowly release it as it comes out and catch it under a pan, very convenient, and it was still kinda loose after that turn, but I did another 1/8 of a turn off camera.

I have the same truck 2020. Got the same set up except I replace stock plastic with aluminum filter housing. Love the fumoto valve
Also I was able to do it without jacking the truck up and I have the extra front lip (sport design package). It was tight but I managed. You should check dip stick with engine off after running it.

Nice video. Looks easy peasy! I got a new 2023 GX460 little over a month ago and just hit 1k miles. Planning on doing the first oil change now and next one at 5k miles, and thereafter every 5k miles. A good mechanic friend of mine recommended not waiting until 10k miles.

BigdogLarry, just curious what oil are you planning on using? I just bought a 23 GX as well with only 3000k miles on it. Dealer already changed the oil but for next time I always do my own maintenance. I'm currently planning on Mobil1 but just curious what others are using.

@@SokhomGarage Actually, check engine oil level when engine is OFF.
Otherwise you are overfilling your engine with oil and never getting an accurate reading anyway due to oil splashing from a running crank-shaft.

@@SokhomGarage Read the Owner's Manual supplied with the vehicle. Oil level should be checked after the enging has been turned off for five minutes (to allow oil in the upper end of the engine to drain down into the crankcase). You put the correct amount of oil in to begin with and then preceeded to overfill it after checking it with the engine running.
You might be confused by the fact that transmission oil level is commonly checked with the oil hot and the engine idling.
Also note that I have seen large generator and irrigation engines that had dipsticks with two sets of oil level marks. One for checking with the engine not running and another set for checking with the engine running.

    • @SokhomGarage

Yes, unfortunately, you don’t have to remove the skid plate out completely, but if you can have it hanging, it should be fine, but car has to be high enough for it to hang, just to get to the filter.

Checking the dip stick, if it is still dark but translucent, and you can see though it, it still good for a little longer before needed change, and I notice this when I did the first 5k mile, so I’m going to go longer to see if it’s completely dark.

    • @Prokastrynator

Stick to 5k , DIY oil change with filter cost only $35 and once you install fumoto valve it takes 20 min. 10k miles is recommended if you do 80% highway miles. My wifes commute is under 5 miles , short drives, lots of idling waiting for kids. I change every 5k because of that.

Good video. But, like every gx460 oil change on youtube, you skip the part how you remove the skid plate. You brute force and bend the hinge front clip like me didn't you? Before that you curse Lexus for 2 hours didn't you? That way you also skip the skid plate reinstallation didn't you?
Those of you who looking to change oil for this model should know hell is waiting for you if you don't have a car lift. It is not a easy or fast as shown in this video. I fixed mine by grinding/shorten the front hinge clip so the next time I just have to slide it out and not needing it to 90 degree to the ground when having a car lift. Why you think Lexus can charge as much as $150 for an oil change? It extortion. DIY, good luck .

@@stinkytofuz Lexus does not produce "genuine" toyota oil. They purchase it from one of the major motor oil producer and mark them as their own. And mark them up 3 times as much. Stick with the major synthetic brand from walmart and you get a good or better oil for $50 price. This is from personal experience as a former mechanic. I have 2 other cars with 230000(honda) and 320000 (Toyota)miles. The main engine block runs as smooth as the day I bought them new. I regularly replace with whatever synthetic oil are on sale.

@mitchnn I just changed oil for my 2023 GX460 at 1000miles, not oil filter. Good thing is no metal shaves from engine oil. My next oil change will be 5000miles. I'll make as detail as you mentioned here so that everyone can DIY. Besides, Lexus offers two maintenance check: 5000miles and 10k miles. They won't change oil at 5k miles. So I have to do it.
