Yes, they are because the kids are born into poverty which starts with their parents and if the parents cant get their life together the kids sufffer for their decisions.
Eyowen 26 in certain ways yes but you should also take situations into consideration, being in the middle of wars, parents not getting properly educated or not being able to leave the country, things like that.
So in case's where the government makes it extremely hard on people to move above where their at it's their fault?! We live in a society where there rich get richer and oh the rest of us are left to struggle on our own?! Imagine this, you live in a home where your mom a single parent not only graduated high school but went to collage but now has kids to take care of. Does she hold out hoping for a job that goes with her degree, or does she find a job to put a roof over their heads. Food on the table, clothes on their back, and electricity? You know running water, heat in the winter, and a.c. in the summer, if your lucky. So who's fault is it? The parent who's does everything they know how to do, or the government for giving a hand out instead of a hand up?! Poverty is not a choice.
I grew up very poor and I actually believe that I am lucky I did. Granted my parents loved me very much but my mother was also an addict and I had to go without a lot. However, it made me grateful for everything I have, understanding and forgiving of others for their faults and shortcomings and VERY mature from an early age on, even if it was because I was forced to “grow up” long before most children are expected to. In the end, it truly made me a better person. And while I have plenty of money now, when my daughter was younger, I did not, and she is so grateful and empathetic and unlike any other 10 year old I’ve met, and a lot like these little girls in the show.
Sad thing is I've saw children like this but by time they're old enough to make their own life decisions they are so worn down by it all they end up taking the same paths. Things their 10 year old self would never choose their 15 year old self will just want to escape to.
and that's why we all expect they gonna break the cycle of poverty, unfortunately living rough in childhood can change them radically in their teens and they are most likely to continue the cycle of poverty...
These little girls are just AMAZING. How on earth did they get so clever, and mature, and kind and loving. They're incredible and I hope they went on through life to succeed and to live good, decent, happy lives. Incredible.
Heartbreaking, beautiful little girls. They should have warm dry beds. Nobody should have to live in those appallingly conditions. It’s disappointing to see the parents smoking when the children go without. I understand it’s probably the only ‘pleasure’ they have but it’s no longer a poor mans pleasure. Refugees, thankfully, do not live in these conditions, maybe Britain needs to take care of their own first. I hope these bright little girls get all the education they are entitled to & break the poverty cycle. 💔

They were moved to a mold free 5 bedroom home 3 years after this. 3 years... no mold and the walls and windows and ceilings in good order. She had a job 7 of the 10 years. When they split she had depression episodes. Oldest 2 moved out with partners and a baby they had at 20 or older. 3rd oldest living on her own but struggling. The kids moved out working full or part time with a partner working as well. A dog in the house don’t know why? Alcohol and pills still. Even some of the kids smoked. Surprised at that. The child complaining her family didn’t get to do the things others families did has gotten to go on trips. It was mainly positive.
Like I said in an above comment, if this was Canada they’d instantly be put into care of social services. It’s a catch 22…be with the family & not get separated or go to a home that’s warm with food etc & there’d be ZERO tolerance with the violent stepfather. Unfortunately a lot of kids in the care system turn to drugs & crime or go thru abuse. I’m sure these kids must’ve also grown up having some kind of PTSD from witnessing all that. (I was in foster care & group homes etc so I’m speaking with firsthand experience)
Children are first and if my child told me that someone made them feel uncomfortable, then I would say bye bye to that person and never look back! My Child is forever! ❤

Kelly and her sisters grow up was the title of the update. Yes the older girls grown and doing well. Took years to get into a proper property which made me Ill thinking of them there 3 more years. Girls working. Paying taxes. The older 4 were older than their mom when she had the oldest. The oldest 2 over 20 when they had their first baby. Second 2 no children yet. A baby is a blessing but a few more years to start a family usually makes for an easier life. The mom recently split with the husband a few years before. She had been working most of the years since the show, but fell into depression the last 2 when the marriage failed and back on benefits. I think mostly that was for drama to be fair. It was mostly positive though. Like the girl said she wanted to get out of there so they could get on with their life like everyone else. And the new place did that. The house was in good repair. A little cluttered but most homes are. No mold. Not damp. Clean.

yes ... they are smarter then most kids of their age but I'm worried for them cos they are living more of a adult life due to the circumstance they are in . Its so sad....some kids at school say nasty things to this little ones...
Because they have to be. Families with problems, what evever they may be, addiction, mental illness, a sick child or parent, results in at least one child shouldering more than they should. My oldest did this (youngest has profound autism) in spite of my husband and I trying to make sure he didn't. It's instinct, and it's heartbreaking
I can imagine that very easily. Thank God for Churches. It's crazy feeling that awful. The Church did help with food and hand me downs. BUT the teacher for my class said bad things happen to bad people. Every night I prayed and begged for forgiveness for whatever I had done that was so bad. I couldn't think of what I had done. So I cried myself to sleep every night.
I like these people, not so different from lots of people I have known, but we could try and help our neighbors-I think why not? Govt wasn't a lot of help in my experience but why I don't know- know of 3 children died without govt intervención...in Canada, sadly.

Was not quite dickens. They ate. I think the gov and charities are a lot better about food security and showing people how they stretch. Energy to heat the stove a bit more expensive. She had to have fed the two younger kids. They older ones probably just had a wheatabix for dinner.
The council moved the family into a nice semi-detached home, and the consequences were GOOD. Max (Mum) held a job in a care home until she had an exacerbation of her major depression in 2009 when her marriage to Nigel finally fell apart. She also finished training to qualify as a funeral service coordinator.. Kelly and Amy finished high school, and both held full time jobs (as of 2010) as nursing assistants at a care home, and are in a pre-nursing program. Jade was 18 in 2010 was looking for work; her mum states "Jade really helps, she doesn't go out clubbing like most 18 year olds." A decent living environment allowed this family to succeed and make good things happen for themselves.
Its crazy how ONE positive can make all the difference in a life. It's really shocking how many people in the comments seem unaware of how much can pile on someone, just takes one accident/bad choice/death/etc and throw depression and/or other mental health issues untreated, and it spirals quick!
Sam was working part time as a hair dresser. The one who loved doing her own hair. The first 2 had a baby in their 20’s. The second 2 adult kids with no children yet. The house they finally were moved into didn’t have mold issues. It clearly was not their housekeeping and maintenance. There was a reason that estate was condemned and people removed from those units. Probably just too big to fix. They were able to move and get on with their lives as they wished in the film. I’m surprised by the comments. Mental illness is better understood.
I've rarely seen sweeter, unspoiled children. They break my heart. When she said she was surprised her mum was taking her step dad back, and she shouldn't, no child her age should have that much insight. That housing development is shocking. The fungus and mold, just appalling, it's deadly. Those girls are never warm, never full, never have proper nutrition. They don't complain, they have the sweetest disposition. I knew that my health was too poor to raise a child, even if I could have conceived. I love each child, but how can you keep having kids when you can't or won't work, and are living in deadly conditions. A tent might be safer. I can't like the adults, besides their nanny. I can't bring myself to like the husband. I saw in the comments there was a follow up and the kids have done well, which makes me so happy. I wonder how they came across this family for the doc. They are amazing.
No matter who you are, where you live, what you look like, how much money you have... you DON"T smoke inside a house when kids are present and you don't go guilt tripping them either.
Miss Pippi Agreed. I feel bad for Becky. She's growing up is been criticized for wanting her own room when it's perfectly normal for someone her age to ask for. Then there's Amy who probably lashes out at her teachers for underlying reasons.

Oh my word. I grew up poor on welfare assistance. My mother raised six kids alone after leaving an abusive husband our father. He was on the military and got addicted to drugs. So, after a lot of abuse, she left him. She never smoked, never drank (we didn’t have alcohol in our home), and we kept the place clean. I’m sure she was depressed many times and overwhelmed. But, she woke up everyday and took care of us even making sure we did our homework. She didn’t speak English. She sat us at the table after school to do our homework. We rarely watched television except on weekends. I remember the sheet rock ceiling was falling off in my bedroom and that room was always cold since the heater didn’t work that great up. I used to sleep with a winter hat on to keep me warm! It was my boyfriend when I was eighteen years old who fixed that ceiling for us. And my mother never ever brought a man into our home. Thank God for my mother doing the best she could and using that assistance wisely.
Amen. All I see here is what am I entitled to and what do I deserve? My family stood in bread/cheese lines. We did what we needed to but not one thing extra. I quit school to support my siblings and keep our house. My mom....didn't do much, she felt it was all owed to her. Similar to this young ladies parents.

Reminds me of my mother who was widowed at 29 years old with a 2 year old and a baby. ALWAYS put my sister and I first. Never wavered. Your mum had 6. She is a bona fide Saint.
Is it me or does anyone else think that this mother should not sit there and cry and complain about money in front of her kids? I mean, that just stresses them out, and makes them feel bad. That could cause a lot of issues. I don’t know. That just bothers me.

So what what you recommend her say to explain to kids why they can't have decent clothes and food? Kids are smart. They will figure out the situation whether she talks about it in front of them or not.
as doctor phil always says you dont involve kids in adults problems, these people dont have any ambition it seems, cant keep a clean house ,there is no excuse to add booze and smokes in your budget, when your kids skip meals ,and dont even have proper bedding, and why does a little girl sit there worrying about the finances
If you’re a single mom, just focus on being a mom. That’s the best advice I can give any woman in that situation. And I know, because I’m raising two kids on my own. Don’t worry yourself with men. Don’t stress out over having a boyfriend, or finding someone to save you. Just do it yourself. You can date when your kids are grown. It’s only 18 years and you never get that time back.
I know this was posted a year ago, but well said! I'm also a single mom, my daughter is now a teen, but I have worked multiple jobs to keep a roof over my child's head and food in her belly. I have been in serious depression, but my child was always my main focus and is what kept me going! This is horrible for these children!!!
I REALLY LIKE YOUR COMMENT! Responsible Mothering is VERY attractive. One of the things I have learned throughout my dating experiences is if a mother doesn't place her child 1st I will never be genuinely loved or appreciated by that lady. Those ladies seem to prioritize their own extravagant desires (given their circumstances) over their offspring's requirements. They aren't going to treat anyone in their life with respect or trust so "love" is entirely out of the question. Women should be weary of the "Knight in shining armor" that is over-anxious to have a ready made family. The children may be the primary driver in their desire for such a scenario.

In the update the couple didn’t have any more kids. The oldest 2 had a baby in their 20’s and living with their partners. The oldest 3 holding down jobs. The family has a house with no mold.
These sweet little children. It was hard to watch but honestly I kept watching because I was blown away by how mature and strong these little girls are. Off to watch the next video of them.

Agreed! At the very least she could tape clear plastic on the walls to cover the windows/mold. It would help insulate a bit, too. Sad that it even had to come to this situation.
It's the damp. Most all assisted living or low income housing has that problem there. Sometimes the wall are completely wet. You can't stick tape on that
Sadly its the circumstances that have led them to live in that godforsaken house. They cannot do really anything however because most of the times the walls are too wet to even stick tape to it.
And besides, when did a really healthy hot meal get more expensive than snacking? Buy big packs of rice and spaghetti and make some really healthy stews with beans and lentils and the cheapest veggies.
Depression can really take it out of people. I am not making excuses for her. Just giving a reason. It is still her responsibility to manage her mental state so she can provide for the girls.
@Kitty Sulivan It is possible, but I would say there isn't enough info here to know one way or the other. Typically people are chemically predispositioned to be affected by depression and environmental conditions can exacerbate it. That is why some other people living in similar conditions don't suffer from depression. So did the depression start to cause her to ignore responsibilities and make bad choices that led her here? Or was she reasonably mentally healthy and made bad decisions that created an environment that triggered a naturally-occurring but dormant state of depression? We can't really know. I would say either one is equally as likely.
These children are absolutely precious! I was super impressed with how articulate and smart they are - beyond their years. It's sad to hear them discuss adult problems/issues instead of regular kid stuff. But these kids show incredible resilience, strength, wisdom and a rather profound degree of empathy. They are such beautiful, loving, children. My heart goes out to them. I have no desire to pass judgment on the mother since I have not walked in her shoes and watched only this 50 minute video - a single snapshot of their lives. But she must be doing, at least, some things right, despite the real struggle, as evidenced by these precious babes. I wish I was rich and could rescue this family. I worry about the health implications of the damp, moldy environment they are living in.
Yeah but she's the gave birth to six mouths to feed. I'm pretty sure she knew she was poor before at least the last four. And now she's still being selfish and thoughtless by wallowing in her sad situation....the one she created!!!
I lived in poverty for years, almost up to my 20th birthday and my mom never just went to buy cigarettes and alcohol instead of feeding me. My mom would take her food and give it to me, just because i said i want it some. We always lived in a clean house, my grandma used to say that being poor is not a fight against being clean,. This is not a case of "oh life, me so sad" this is parent neglect. Easy.
Both of my parents grew up poor. My dad had a loving family and a clean house. But my mom lived in the American version of this documentary. There is a world of difference in attitudes in my mom’s family vs my dad’s.
If you're like me, you just found this documentary and watched it (2019). I also watched the update documentary, that was made in 2009, I believe. The mom is still living on benefits, not working, complaining about having no money, and making excuses for her hardships. However, the girls seem to be doing well. The older ones all have jobs, partners, pay their own bills, and appear to be happy and doing well. I'm glad that in spite of who raised them, where they were raised, and how they were raised, they have become beautiful, successful, responsible, and happy adults. I hope they are still doing well. After I watched the update documentary, I came back to this one, just to make this statement because when I watched it the first time, I read a few comments about how the kids are going to end up being just like their mom. One person said not to bother watching the update because they all have kids they can't take care of and that wasn't even close to being true. Keep your heads up, young ladies. I went through this as a kid. My mom was immature, and she made sure we both (my sister and I) thought of her as the victim. Huge victim complex. Also a narcissist. We had no money but she always had everything SHE needed. This is a terrible way to grow up but hopefully they will all be like my sister and I and make a great life for themselves. They grow up strong enough to do it on their own
Amen to you. My parents got divorced after 25 years of marriage. I was in my senior year, salatatorian, had grants and scholarships on the line. Had to leave school early so my younger brother and sister didn't have to go water and/or electricity. My mom's focus was that my dad wasn't giving her enough money. Of course my dad's opinion was that he was giving plenty. That left it to me. This wasn't fair at all, though I wouldn't change it for the world. We did stand in good lines and did what we needed to do, but nothing beyond that. The fact that this woman thought she was so deserving of things leaves me baffled. And the fact that her daughter is so concerned about her mother's depression, etc al, sickens me. She should have been shielded from all of that.

Young ladies: This is an excellent example of how "falling in love" with a worthless man will never, ever help you. He will drag you down further than if you stayed on your own. Sure, the mother has chronic depression and has made some bad decisions, but she's done enough right that her children are smart and loving. My heart goes out to them. The man? The black mold, the cigarette smoke, the dampness, the mood instability in both parents -- these remarkable girls are coping with terrible things so gracefully, so eloquently. I'm amazed and also want to reach through the screen and save them, at least temporarily, until the adults get a safe household together.

Right. Don't know about there but where I live cigarettes are 6+ dollars a pack. Some off brand not but little bit less. I'd put my child's shoes before the cigarettes. That's just me, my opinion. I vape now, but I'm an elderly widow lady, retired & can afford it now, but I've saw times when my sons were little that I didn't have the money for extra things. I remember those years.

If she gave cigarettes then might have more money to look for a better place to live. The mold is slowly killing them as well as Maxine's change to get COPD. I would think if they left that environment they would be less depressed and feel better. The sad part is that many of the children's toys and other things would need to be thrown away because of mold spores.
I was the oldest of five (5) kids and we grew up dirt poor -- and believe it or not -- we didn't even have an indoor bathroom !! We had an old fashioned "out-house" that sat away from the house we rented. We took a bath on Saturday evening in a steel oval shaped wash-tub that sat in the middle of our kitchen floor. My mother would turn the oven on -- on our kitchen stove to heat up the kitchen. She would fill up the bathtub with cold water and then heat up large pans of water on the stove and pour it into the cold water to make the water warm. We were literally 'dirt poor' -- BUT -- one thing that we were NOT and that was "dirty" !!!! The mother of these children does not have a clue of what it means to be CLEAN !!! People can be poor but they CAN BE CLEAN !! The sofa in our living room was literally supported by bricks -- we received the sofa for free -- because one of the legs had been broken off. It was still a good sofa -- but to use it we had to place three red bricks under one of the legs! Our mom taught us to be clean! Our walls were clean -- our floors were scrubbed and clean -- our beds were made and the bed clothes were clean. We may have not had very much -- but what we did have -- we took care of! YOU CAN BE POOR -- but you still be CLEAN !!
What is so morally superior about people who merely keep a clean house? That is just preference. I think if anyone chooses not to make cleaning a priority; then that is their business and their value system.If you don't live with them don't worry about it. Just clean your own house if that is vital to you but don't go demonizing those who don't care. It's not laziness like you might smugly assume, just a difference in where a person chooses to expend their limited time and energy . Having a clean house doesn't HAVE to be oh so important to other persons who are not you, and people who don't care so much are not less then you the way you all automatically want to believe... If I had a choice between reading a book cover to cover and cleaning the house for 6 hours, I'll ALWAYS read the book. That will always be my choice. And I will always choose a book over housework. Because I do have that choice. I may be a pig but I am a well read pig. I am definitely much better read then average Sally suburban and her spotless home. And you can judge all you want(and you will)...but I don't "get" you people either! You people are always caring SO MUCH about something SOOOO stupid, vapid and shallow. I judge you right back. Though these days there is Kindle and it reads books out loud. So I have started to try multitasking cleaning with reading but Its hard if the book requires concentration. My friends tell me the middle class obsession with being clean has to do with having kids. But there is more meaningful existences then owning a beautiful well tended home. But peoples entire lifework is all poured into that goal exclusively. But at least you have the joy of looking down on others. Maybe that makes it all worth it to you.
Also you can use bleach to clean the mold on the walls. I can tell the house must be leaking moisture so it would be a never ending battle but, I'd do it no matter what.

These beautiful, world-weary girls. How they’ve learned their mother’s script for their predicament. Mother’s habits (smoking @450p a pack, Jack Daniels at £20/L) are literally taking food from her daughters’ mouths. The girls look remarkably healthy considering the filth, mold and fungus in their environment. Food banks were new in U.K. in 2000, but hopefully there is a great deal more help for those in need today.
I work with kids and this is way too true. We provide kids one meal a week and even though half aren't in our actual program. It's pretty heartbreaking.

They would be living and 3 a day each. He has been unable to work 7 months. He will get the ability to work again. Something is wrong with his record that will be cleared up soon. That means 8 months ago they were fine but their accommodations.
SHE'S lucky she has healthy, beautiful children. Free housing and free food and healthcare for her children. I'm a single mom I get nothing. I wish I could give him the world. It's true that u can be a good mom and still be poor. We are all human, after all, nobody is perfect!
I've worked with kids who've been in similar situations. The last thing they need is pity as it destroys hope and drive. Look at the dad turning his nose up at jobs because they don't pay enough. He should be out collecting cans to recycle, doing anything to help support his family. His drive is destroyed and he feels like a victim which is why he's blowing up at the government for not giving him handouts as he feels they should. But he's an adult, he's not a victim, that's his choice. The kids are the victims and I just hope they can turn that around and become adult victors instead.
That's very much in line with how my bf thinks. He was raised under pitiful conditions, but has always maintained that you're never a slave to circumstance.

Ive just watched the sequel to this. What an lovely family - they really did manage to get through all the adversity with love. They didn't have much at all but they had each other. I wish them all the absolute best.

Like everyone else,I had an immediate negative reaction to the parents. The mom is doing something right in raising these kids, though, they are awesome. Whatever it is, they are a hundred times better behaved and more thoughtful than so many on higher rings of the social ladder.
Yes they seem very aware and mature. It's so sad that they are being malnourished and their damp/moldy living environment is so unhealthy. These things will have a long term adverse effect on their minds and bodies. :(
Bindu Chandrabose These girls are really amazing. Such a smart, humble, polite, well behaved, modest, nice children. I don't know why, but I think it is not because of good parenting. Their mom seems like a person who is not interested in being a parent at all. She seems lost and depressed. She simply let herself go down with the flow of har life. I know it is not easy, but it seems like she is not even trying anymore. She gave up on fighting for her children. She lacks many parenting skills. As I said, I know it is difficult, but she could at least try not to be so lazy and clean the house. In all that mess and dirty space everything looks ten time worse than it is.

He was a bus driver, caused an accident, and went to jail over it and lost his license. So I think he means he can't drive a bus anymore. Hopefully he found another line of work
The step dad says he can't work. Cause he has no license. So the truth is he can work, he just won't do anything to get there. If you have to walk or ride your bike for work Man up and do it, stop being another child in her life when she needs a man. To help and be there for her and your kids. This is sad.
His former job was to drive. A license is sort of pivotal. But yes he could get some other type of employment now and actually he’s got his license back so he may drive if he likes. Maybe not for a living, I really don’t know how forgiving the U.K. Is. The U.S. is most decidedly not forgiving about these things.

I see from the shows that I watch the UK doesn't look too forgiving either. parts of it does look more screwed up than the United States does. I just know I watched this one and it really made me pissed. Because of one thing she does is smoke. People could have bought them for her or her mom . My God she even pawned her rings, so I'm sure that it went to Food. Even if it was for a pack of cigarettes. I think she has a right to a pack of cigarettes. I'm sure she would starve herself first. This mom does seem like she is really trying and she's struggling just like everybody does in this world. People are jerks pointing out about one thing that she is doing wrong. And who's to say smoking is wrong. Serenitys Dream exactly! I raised my 2 kids, working 2-3 jobs ,went to college, never missed a ball game,practice, band concert, or any school function. I went back to work less than 6 wks after going thru open heart surgery and being in a coma for most of 1 summer. My transmission tore up in my car, i drove my bicycle to work in the dam SNOW 25-30 degrees outside. I did what i had to do to make ends meet and make sure my babies didnt do without. I bought a house and paid it off before my kids graduated high school. Both went to college and they both have excellent jobs and hav bought beautiful homes. My daughter just spent 2 mos in Italy My son is preaching at age 32. Its all about motivation and not living off the system . Taking pride in yourself and your life. The most important fact is LOVING the LORD. 🙏😇❤️
It hurts watching this, because my stepdad said the same thing, he STILL doesn't have a license and hasn't had a job in over 15 years. My mom has been supporting both of them the whole time, but she isn't any better, she wastes all her money on smokes and weed so they never pay their bills. I was so happy the day I saved enough money to move out.

I almost died last year from a coma. so I'm not going to even get into that. @@serenitysdream8759 she has six (6) kids and I disagree with u. I'm a mother of 3 children and there is no way I would let my children go hungry while I sat there and smoked. (I don't smoke cigarettes, but I've had my habits). U can buy a loaf or 2 of bread, a jar of peanut butter and/or a carton of eggs, for the price of a pack of cigarettes. As parents it's our duty to take care of our kids and that means we have to sacrifice some things. That includes giving up a habit that we chose to have. Smoking is not a necessity, it's something that the person chooses to do. I see the mother as being selfish. She chose to take away from the whole family, just so she didn't have to go through withdrawals. I'm happy the family turned out alright, and the girls are doing well now. But I think that the mom should have thought about using some birth control or having her tubes tied. I love my children and would love to have more, but I can't afford to have anymore. I know I can't afford it, so I do what I have to do to not have anymore. I also don't understand why she's getting a check from the government. Why can't she work? I'm sorry I have no sympathy for this mother. It's one thing to have bad luck and hard times. I've been there, but to stay down as long as she did and to use the system for as long as she has, upsets me.

It only took a minute to see this lady is badly depressed. Shes existing. Shes lost the desire to live. She said it herself if it weren't for her kids she'd b dead. But ppl dont help or have compassion for these type of ppl because they figure if they can do it, get up everyday, why cant u. These ppl dont understand depression. Its something that's takes over you, like a demon. Only light, love, support, encouragement, and understanding your importance for living, and that someone needs u to live,...you can get out of your head or dark place.

She doesn’t know where to go get help. She doesn’t probably want to get out of the bed everyday and it’s obvious that she just wants someone to love her. I too suffer from severe depression but I would NEVER let my children come second to anything!!! STOP SMOKING AND DRINKING and look after those precious children who YOU brought into the world!!! Instead of getting rid of the kids bikes, pawn those guitars hanging on the wall or the gold earrings the mom wears - their priorities seem badly warped.
These girls are actually very grateful and love their mum, so I think they’re doing something right with raising such lovely girls. I grew up poor and resented my parents so much. I always compared myself to others and never understood why I couldn’t have nice things. I distanced myself from my family and promised that I’ll never be the same when I grew up..
But just imagine how different the situation would be if the mother stopped smoking and drinking and used that money to buy food and clothes for her children.

It's 13 pounds a pack now in UK or more. 400 pounds a month is the difference between living reasonably well and living badly. That's before counting the booze. For a a family of 4, McDonals is expensive, too. You could have a roast fresh chicken and veg for half that money.

They get up and go to jobs they don't like, feeling depressed, sick, etc. They work at crappy jobs because they have children who are important to them. I've seen parents work two jobs before they would let their children live like that. No jobs? No.... Just none that appealed to him. I absolutely agree. Both of these parents are awful. If they really wanted to work, they could have found some job, any job. They would not just sit there all depressed complaining like it is everyone's else fault they are in that situation, but not theirs. I really don't want to judge, but this mom is lazy immature and irresponsible. To have a kid at 16, no education, no job, no place to live, no security, no stability......... and then she has 5 more kids. I know it is no nice of me to say this but: What was she thinking??? she brought her children into this world and not only that she is not able to care for them, but these poor girls have to take care of her, because she got depressed. If she can't find job, she could at least work at home and clean the house. It would help her with her depression
Jan Upczak yeah i heard what he said about the wages offered when he was checking out the job board. He could work 2 part time jobs to make up the difference or the mom could work. She looked capable to me. The black mold on those walls could be taken care of with a few gallons of clorox and water too. Black mold will kill you. No wonder the house was not really liveable. Im gna try to find the update on this family and see how those girls r doing. I would adopt one or 2 of them and bring them to the US. I am retired and have no grandchildren. When people meet my mom and stepdad they are confused because I'm nothing like them, and that's all because I saw how they were and made damn sure not to turn out or act like them. I have often said by raising my own kids I am righting the wrongs of those before me. I can remember everything they did that i despised and I'm so thankful I have enough sense in me to choose to raise my kids different
That little girl who sung at the end has a beautiful voice, she could go far! It's just a shame that they are living in squalor. The Mum must have done something right as the girls seem very nice and quite intelligent for their age. It's so sad that they have to live like this. My heart goes out to them and everyone else in the same situation.

I'm amazed by how children are so mature, flexible, strong, hopeful, and super mature and wise! As sad as reality is, we must always learn resilience from children over and over to move on without mourning what's lost. Huge gaps in this messed up world.
It is really sad to hear the kids saying things like "Mom has been doing really well lately". It is like the roles are reversed, and the kids are worried about their mom and taking care of her. But the problem is that legally, they are still the dependents and can't earn money. Very poor situation. Of course this was a long time ago and all of these kids are adults now (even the baby). I hope they all made it.

Choo Choo i don’t know how stable Europe’s economy is but unfortunate events can knock anyone and stability is not something you can guarantee forever. Responsible parents is not equal to rich parents. You can have all the money and neglect your children. Although I support the idea of having money to support your children, I can’t help but thinking that’s pretty idealistic. Not to mention that poverty oftentimes go on for generations, does that mean they shouldn’t have any children at all? Poverty is way too complex and saying “you shouldn’t have children” won’t solve it.
This story really touched my heart in a major way. My daddy died when I was 5yrs old and my mama was on SSI disability so we were POOR. I got my clothes from Goodwill my whole Elementary School years. My shoes had holes in them. My mama got Christmas food and presents from the Church and signing us up with Secret Santa and a few times we had a rich family “adopt” us for Christmas which means they bought us EVERYTHING. So much food, clothes, toys, etc. THAT was the best Christmas. But yeah we were very poor. We didn’t live in a run down condemned home we lived in an apt based on income so she only paid $19 for rent. Mind u this was in the 80’s. I am a 70’s baby. But yeah I went thru it. My uncle worked at the farmers market and he’d bring us fruits and veggies and of course my mama got stamps but when food ran out at the end of the month we struggled til stamp time came back around. One month we ate pinto beans and cornbread for the whole month. My uncle brought us a 40lb bag of pinto beans from the market. But hey it was better than nothing! So yeah I’m really feeling this family and what they’re going through

As a person who grew up in poverty with parents who sacrificed so much and worked diligently to provide for my sister and I, I can tell you.... even having a conversation with someone who has never lived in poverty about the decisions you make to fulfill all your needs mental, physical, social, etc..... it's nearly impossible unless they are very empathetic. A small example : When you have paid all your bills, and the only money you have that you get to choose how you spend it is the money you have for food.... sometimes you buy icecream, and treats instead of nutritional foods. Because it's a small joy you can provide yourself, when you can't afford vacations, or clothes you enjoy wearing, or a home you're proud of, or to go to a movie or anything that's entertainment period. It takes a lot of discipline to always make good choices when literally every penny counts.
Wealthy people don't typically understand the stress and work involved in trying to make it work with so little. My dad had to buy junk cars, and make them work. That meant finding a car that was worth investing the money you have (which wasn't a lot) and make sure you can afford to fix it. You also invest time. When you're walking to work you're loosing daylight hours that would be spent working on the vehicle. Then if it falls through, and it doesn't work you have all this guilt and frustration about making a bad decision and wasting money. Gut wrenching guilt, because you feel like you've stolen from your family. A wealthy person can just go to a car lot and pick a car like picking out a t-shirt. They know it'll work, and if it doesn't it's probably warrantied, they afford to fix, it or trade it in. I just see a lot of people in the comments being so judgmental and to me it's a reflection of their inability to understand how living in poverty effects everything in your life. Even how you make decisions, and prioritize things.
Update: They are all grown up now and doing well. The mom is doing well and is proud of her grown kids. They are a beautiful and strong bunch of survivors. The mom did an excellent job raising them.

These children have much more sense than the adults in their lives. First thing, clean up your mess. Tidy up. Nothing better to do but sit on their a**es smoking cigarettes. Poor kids. I hope their lives turned out better than the examples they had.

We grew up poor,on welfare with a single mom. There were times in my life where we had literally nothing to eat. But, our homes were always spotless and we were always clean.
I grew up poor, and my grandmother had TEN children, but we NEVER LIVED IN FILTH...I remember everybody waking up on Saturdays, cleaning the house, being poor does NOT mean you need to be nasty, that children need to be dirty, or that ur home needs to smell bad, I would rather go into a public restroom and 'borrow' some of their liquid soap and toilet paper, then live in filth

Yes, they are because the kids are born into poverty which starts with their parents and if the parents cant get their life together the kids sufffer for their decisions.
Eyowen 26 in certain ways yes but you should also take situations into consideration, being in the middle of wars, parents not getting properly educated or not being able to leave the country, things like that.

So in case's where the government makes it extremely hard on people to move above where their at it's their fault?! We live in a society where there rich get richer and oh the rest of us are left to struggle on our own?! Imagine this, you live in a home where your mom a single parent not only graduated high school but went to collage but now has kids to take care of. Does she hold out hoping for a job that goes with her degree, or does she find a job to put a roof over their heads. Food on the table, clothes on their back, and electricity? You know running water, heat in the winter, and a.c. in the summer, if your lucky. So who's fault is it? The parent who's does everything they know how to do, or the government for giving a hand out instead of a hand up?! Poverty is not a choice.
I’m astounded by the insight and maturity of these amazing little girls.
I grew up very poor and I actually believe that I am lucky I did. Granted my parents loved me very much but my mother was also an addict and I had to go without a lot. However, it made me grateful for everything I have, understanding and forgiving of others for their faults and shortcomings and VERY mature from an early age on, even if it was because I was forced to “grow up” long before most children are expected to. In the end, it truly made me a better person. And while I have plenty of money now, when my daughter was younger, I did not, and she is so grateful and empathetic and unlike any other 10 year old I’ve met, and a lot like these little girls in the show.
Sad thing is I've saw children like this but by time they're old enough to make their own life decisions they are so worn down by it all they end up taking the same paths. Things their 10 year old self would never choose their 15 year old self will just want to escape to.
and that's why we all expect they gonna break the cycle of poverty, unfortunately living rough in childhood can change them radically in their teens and they are most likely to continue the cycle of poverty...
These little girls are just AMAZING. How on earth did they get so clever, and mature, and kind and loving. They're incredible and I hope they went on through life to succeed and to live good, decent, happy lives. Incredible.

They were moved to a mold free 5 bedroom home 3 years after this. 3 years... no mold and the walls and windows and ceilings in good order. She had a job 7 of the 10 years. When they split she had depression episodes. Oldest 2 moved out with partners and a baby they had at 20 or older. 3rd oldest living on her own but struggling. The kids moved out working full or part time with a partner working as well. A dog in the house don’t know why? Alcohol and pills still. Even some of the kids smoked. Surprised at that. The child complaining her family didn’t get to do the things others families did has gotten to go on trips. It was mainly positive.
Like I said in an above comment, if this was Canada they’d instantly be put into care of social services. It’s a catch 22…be with the family & not get separated or go to a home that’s warm with food etc & there’d be ZERO tolerance with the violent stepfather. Unfortunately a lot of kids in the care system turn to drugs & crime or go thru abuse. I’m sure these kids must’ve also grown up having some kind of PTSD from witnessing all that. (I was in foster care & group homes etc so I’m speaking with firsthand experience)

This happens a lot...the parents are so immature the kids end up taking care of them and raising themselves.
Kelly and her sisters grow up was the title of the update. Yes the older girls grown and doing well. Took years to get into a proper property which made me Ill thinking of them there 3 more years. Girls working. Paying taxes. The older 4 were older than their mom when she had the oldest. The oldest 2 over 20 when they had their first baby. Second 2 no children yet. A baby is a blessing but a few more years to start a family usually makes for an easier life. The mom recently split with the husband a few years before. She had been working most of the years since the show, but fell into depression the last 2 when the marriage failed and back on benefits. I think mostly that was for drama to be fair. It was mostly positive though. Like the girl said she wanted to get out of there so they could get on with their life like everyone else. And the new place did that. The house was in good repair. A little cluttered but most homes are. No mold. Not damp. Clean.

Because they have to be. Families with problems, what evever they may be, addiction, mental illness, a sick child or parent, results in at least one child shouldering more than they should. My oldest did this (youngest has profound autism) in spite of my husband and I trying to make sure he didn't. It's instinct, and it's heartbreaking

The council moved the family into a nice semi-detached home, and the consequences were GOOD. Max (Mum) held a job in a care home until she had an exacerbation of her major depression in 2009 when her marriage to Nigel finally fell apart. She also finished training to qualify as a funeral service coordinator..
Kelly and Amy finished high school, and both held full time jobs (as of 2010) as nursing assistants at a care home, and are in a pre-nursing program. Jade was 18 in 2010 was looking for work; her mum states "Jade really helps, she doesn't go out clubbing like most 18 year olds."
A decent living environment allowed this family to succeed and make good things happen for themselves.
Its crazy how ONE positive can make all the difference in a life. It's really shocking how many people in the comments seem unaware of how much can pile on someone, just takes one accident/bad choice/death/etc and throw depression and/or other mental health issues untreated, and it spirals quick!

Sam was working part time as a hair dresser. The one who loved doing her own hair. The first 2 had a baby in their 20’s. The second 2 adult kids with no children yet. The house they finally were moved into didn’t have mold issues. It clearly was not their housekeeping and maintenance. There was a reason that estate was condemned and people removed from those units. Probably just too big to fix. They were able to move and get on with their lives as they wished in the film. I’m surprised by the comments. Mental illness is better understood.

I've rarely seen sweeter, unspoiled children. They break my heart. When she said she was surprised her mum was taking her step dad back, and she shouldn't, no child her age should have that much insight. That housing development is shocking. The fungus and mold, just appalling, it's deadly. Those girls are never warm, never full, never have proper nutrition. They don't complain, they have the sweetest disposition.
I knew that my health was too poor to raise a child, even if I could have conceived. I love each child, but how can you keep having kids when you can't or won't work, and are living in deadly conditions. A tent might be safer. I can't like the adults, besides their nanny. I can't bring myself to like the husband. I saw in the comments there was a follow up and the kids have done well, which makes me so happy. I wonder how they came across this family for the doc. They are amazing.

Oh my word. I grew up poor on welfare assistance. My mother raised six kids alone after leaving an abusive husband our father. He was on the military and got addicted to drugs. So, after a lot of abuse, she left him. She never smoked, never drank (we didn’t have alcohol in our home), and we kept the place clean. I’m sure she was depressed many times and overwhelmed. But, she woke up everyday and took care of us even making sure we did our homework. She didn’t speak English. She sat us at the table after school to do our homework. We rarely watched television except on weekends. I remember the sheet rock ceiling was falling off in my bedroom and that room was always cold since the heater didn’t work that great up. I used to sleep with a winter hat on to keep me warm! It was my boyfriend when I was eighteen years old who fixed that ceiling for us. And my mother never ever brought a man into our home. Thank God for my mother doing the best she could and using that assistance wisely.

Amen. All I see here is what am I entitled to and what do I deserve? My family stood in bread/cheese lines. We did what we needed to but not one thing extra. I quit school to support my siblings and keep our house. My mom....didn't do much, she felt it was all owed to her. Similar to this young ladies parents.

If you’re a single mom, just focus on being a mom. That’s the best advice I can give any woman in that situation. And I know, because I’m raising two kids on my own. Don’t worry yourself with men. Don’t stress out over having a boyfriend, or finding someone to save you. Just do it yourself. You can date when your kids are grown. It’s only 18 years and you never get that time back.

I'm also a single mom, my daughter is now a teen, but I have worked multiple jobs to keep a roof over my child's head and food in her belly. I have been in serious depression, but my child was always my main focus and is what kept me going!

I REALLY LIKE YOUR COMMENT! Responsible Mothering is VERY attractive. One of the things I have learned throughout my dating experiences is if a mother doesn't place her child 1st I will never be genuinely loved or appreciated by that lady. Those ladies seem to prioritize their own extravagant desires (given their circumstances) over their offspring's requirements. They aren't going to treat anyone in their life with respect or trust so "love" is entirely out of the question. Women should be weary of the "Knight in shining armor" that is over-anxious to have a ready made family. The children may be the primary driver in their desire for such a scenario.

In the update the couple didn’t have any more kids. The oldest 2 had a baby in their 20’s and living with their partners. The oldest 3 holding down jobs. The family has a house with no mold.

It's the damp. Most all assisted living or low income housing has that problem there. Sometimes the wall are completely wet. You can't stick tape on that
It’s council property and council responsibility. There isn t mold cause of the resident of the place. They can’t control roof, windows and pipes.
Sadly its the circumstances that have led them to live in that godforsaken house. They cannot do really anything however because most of the times the walls are too wet to even stick tape to it.

@Kitty Sulivan It is possible, but I would say there isn't enough info here to know one way or the other. Typically people are chemically predispositioned to be affected by depression and environmental conditions can exacerbate it. That is why some other people living in similar conditions don't suffer from depression. So did the depression start to cause her to ignore responsibilities and make bad choices that led her here? Or was she reasonably mentally healthy and made bad decisions that created an environment that triggered a naturally-occurring but dormant state of depression? We can't really know. I would say either one is equally as likely.
These children are absolutely precious! I was super impressed with how articulate and smart they are - beyond their years. It's sad to hear them discuss adult problems/issues instead of regular kid stuff. But these kids show incredible resilience, strength, wisdom and a rather profound degree of empathy. They are such beautiful, loving, children. My heart goes out to them. I have no desire to pass judgment on the mother since I have not walked in her shoes and watched only this 50 minute video - a single snapshot of their lives. But she must be doing, at least, some things right, despite the real struggle, as evidenced by these precious babes. I wish I was rich and could rescue this family. I worry about the health implications of the damp, moldy environment they are living in.

I lived in poverty for years, almost up to my 20th birthday and my mom never just went to buy cigarettes and alcohol instead of feeding me. My mom would take her food and give it to me, just because i said i want it some.
We always lived in a clean house, my grandma used to say that being poor is not a fight against being clean,. This is not a case of "oh life, me so sad" this is parent neglect. Easy.
Both of my parents grew up poor. My dad had a loving family and a clean house. But my mom lived in the American version of this documentary. There is a world of difference in attitudes in my mom’s family vs my dad’s.

If you're like me, you just found this documentary and watched it (2019). I also watched the update documentary, that was made in 2009, I believe. The mom is still living on benefits, not working, complaining about having no money, and making excuses for her hardships. However, the girls seem to be doing well. The older ones all have jobs, partners, pay their own bills, and appear to be happy and doing well. I'm glad that in spite of who raised them, where they were raised, and how they were raised, they have become beautiful, successful, responsible, and happy adults. I hope they are still doing well. After I watched the update documentary, I came back to this one, just to make this statement because when I watched it the first time, I read a few comments about how the kids are going to end up being just like their mom. One person said not to bother watching the update because they all have kids they can't take care of and that wasn't even close to being true. Keep your heads up, young ladies. You should be extremely proud of yourselves.

I went through this as a kid. My mom was immature, and she made sure we both (my sister and I) thought of her as the victim. Huge victim complex. Also a narcissist. We had no money but she always had everything SHE needed. This is a terrible way to grow up but hopefully they will all be like my sister and I and make a great life for themselves. They grow up strong enough to do it on their own
Amen to you. My parents got divorced after 25 years of marriage. I was in my senior year, salatatorian, had grants and scholarships on the line. Had to leave school early so my younger brother and sister didn't have to go water and/or electricity. My mom's focus was that my dad wasn't giving her enough money. Of course my dad's opinion was that he was giving plenty. That left it to me. This wasn't fair at all, though I wouldn't change it for the world. We did stand in good lines and did what we needed to do, but nothing beyond that. The fact that this woman thought she was so deserving of things leaves me baffled. And the fact that her daughter is so concerned about her mother's depression, etc al, sickens me. She should have been shielded from all of that.

Young ladies: This is an excellent example of how "falling in love" with a worthless man will never, ever help you. He will drag you down further than if you stayed on your own. Sure, the mother has chronic depression and has made some bad decisions, but she's done enough right that her children are smart and loving. My heart goes out to them. The man? If she gave cigarettes then might have more money to look for a better place to live. The mold is slowly killing them as well as Maxine's change to get COPD. I would think if they left that environment they would be less depressed and feel better. The sad part is that many of the children's toys and other things would need to be thrown away because of mold spores.
I was the oldest of five (5) kids and we grew up dirt poor -- and believe it or not -- we didn't even have an indoor bathroom !! We had an old fashioned "out-house" that sat away from the house we rented. We took a bath on Saturday evening in a steel oval shaped wash-tub that sat in the middle of our kitchen floor. My mother would turn the oven on -- on our kitchen stove to heat up the kitchen. She would fill up the bathtub with cold water and then heat up large pans of water on the stove and pour it into the cold water to make the water warm.
We were literally 'dirt poor' -- BUT -- one thing that we were NOT and that was "dirty" !!!! The mother of these children does not have a clue of what it means to be CLEAN !!! People can be poor but they CAN BE CLEAN !!
The sofa in our living room was literally supported by bricks -- we received the sofa for free -- because one of the legs had been broken off. It was still a good sofa -- but to use it we had to place three red bricks under one of the legs!
Our mom taught us to be clean! Our walls were clean -- our floors were scrubbed and clean -- our beds were made and the bed clothes were clean. We may have not had very much -- but what we did have -- we took care of!

What is so morally superior about people who merely keep a clean house? That is just preference. I think if anyone chooses not to make cleaning a priority; then that is their business and their value system.If you don't live with them don't worry about it. Just clean your own house if that is vital to you but don't go demonizing those who don't care. It's not laziness like you might smugly assume, just a difference in where a person chooses to expend their limited time and energy . Having a clean house doesn't HAVE to be oh so important to other persons who are not you, and people who don't care so much are not less then you the way you all automatically want to believe... If I had a choice between reading a book cover to cover and cleaning the house for 6 hours, I'll ALWAYS read the book. That will always be my choice. And I will always choose a book over housework. Because I do have that choice. I may be a pig but I am a well read pig. I am definitely much better read then average Sally suburban and her spotless home. And you can judge all you want(and you will)...but I don't "get" you people either! You people are always caring SO MUCH about something SOOOO stupid, vapid and shallow. I judge you right back. Though these days there is Kindle and it reads books out loud. So I have started to try multitasking cleaning with reading but Its hard if the book requires concentration. My friends tell me the middle class obsession with being clean has to do with having kids. But there is more meaningful existences then owning a beautiful well tended home. But peoples entire lifework is all poured into that goal exclusively. But at least you have the joy of looking down on others. Maybe that makes it all worth it to you.
Also you can use bleach to clean the mold on the walls. I can tell the house must be leaking moisture so it would be a never ending battle but, I'd do it no matter what.

These beautiful, world-weary girls. How they’ve learned their mother’s script for their predicament. Mother’s habits (smoking @450p a pack, Jack Daniels at £20/L) are literally taking food from her daughters’ mouths. The girls look remarkably healthy considering the filth, mold and fungus in their environment. Food banks were new in U.K. in 2000, but hopefully there is a great deal more help for those in need today.

I've worked with kids who've been in similar situations. The last thing they need is pity as it destroys hope and drive. Look at the dad turning his nose up at jobs because they don't pay enough. He should be out collecting cans to recycle, doing anything to help support his family. His drive is destroyed and he feels like a victim which is why he's blowing up at the government for not giving him handouts as he feels they should. But he's an adult, he's not a victim, that's his choice. The kids are the victims and I just hope they can turn that around and become adult victors instead.
That's very much in line with how my bf thinks. He was raised under pitiful conditions, but has always maintained that you're never a slave to circumstance.

Ive just watched the sequel to this. What an lovely family - they really did manage to get through all the adversity with love. They didn't have much at all but they had each other. I wish them all the absolute best.

Those poor children. I can’t imagine how horrible their clothes smell when they go to school. Cigarettes and musty mold. 😥 I’m sure the bullying was relentless. The “parents” need a wake up call! Like everyone else,I had an immediate negative reaction to the parents. The mom is doing something right in raising these kids, though, they are awesome. Whatever it is, they are a hundred times better behaved and more thoughtful than so many on higher rings of the social ladder.
Yes they seem very aware and mature. It's so sad that they are being malnourished and their damp/moldy living environment is so unhealthy. These things will have a long term adverse effect on their minds and bodies. :(

Bindu Chandrabose These girls are really amazing. Such a smart, humble, polite, well behaved, modest, nice children. I don't know why, but I think it is not because of good parenting. Their mom seems like a person who is not interested in being a parent at all. She seems lost and depressed. She simply let herself go down with the flow of har life. I know it is not easy, but it seems like she is not even trying anymore. She gave up on fighting for her children. She lacks many parenting skills. As I said, I know it is difficult, but she could at least try not to be so lazy and clean the house. In all that mess and dirty space everything looks ten time worse than it is.

His former job was to drive. A license is sort of pivotal. But yes he could get some other type of employment now and actually he’s got his license back so he may drive if he likes. Maybe not for a living, I really don’t know how forgiving the U.K. Is. The U.S. is most decidedly not forgiving about these things.

I see from the shows that I watch the UK doesn't look too forgiving either. parts of it does look more screwed up than the United States does. Serenitys Dream exactly! I raised my 2 kids, working 2-3 jobs ,went to college, never missed a ball game,practice, band concert, or any school function. I went back to work less than 6 wks after going thru open heart surgery and being in a coma for most of 1 summer. My transmission tore up in my car, i drove my bicycle to work in the dam SNOW 25-30 degrees outside. I did what i had to do to make ends meet and make sure my babies didnt do without. I bought a house and paid it off before my kids graduated high school. Both went to college and they both have excellent jobs and hav bought beautiful homes. My daughter just spent 2 mos in Italy My son is preaching at age 32. Its all about motivation and not living off the system . Taking pride in yourself and your life. The most important fact is LOVING the LORD. 🙏😇❤️
It hurts watching this, because my stepdad said the same thing, he STILL doesn't have a license and hasn't had a job in over 15 years. My mom has been supporting both of them the whole time, but she isn't any better, she wastes all her money on smokes and weed so they never pay their bills. I was so happy the day I saved enough money to move out.

(I don't smoke cigarettes, but I've had my habits). U can buy a loaf or 2 of bread, a jar of peanut butter and/or a carton of eggs, for the price of a pack of cigarettes. As parents it's our duty to take care of our kids and that means we have to sacrifice some things. That includes giving up a habit that we chose to have. Smoking is not a necessity, it's something that the person chooses to do. I see the mother as being selfish. She chose to take away from the whole family, just so she didn't have to go through withdrawals. I'm happy the family turned out alright, and the girls are doing well now. But I think that the mom should have thought about using some birth control or having her tubes tied. I love my children and would love to have more, but I can't afford to have anymore. I know I can't afford it, so I do what I have to do to not have anymore.
I also don't understand why she's getting a check from the government. Why can't she work? I'm sorry I have no sympathy for this mother. It's one thing to have bad luck and hard times. I've been there, but to stay down as long as she did and to use the system for as long as she has, upsets me.

I absolutely agree. Both of these parents are awful. If they really wanted to work, they could have found some job, any job. They would not just sit there all depressed complaining like it is everyone's else fault they are in that situation, but not theirs. This story really touched my heart in a major way. My daddy died when I was 5yrs old and my mama was on SSI disability so we were POOR. I got my clothes from Goodwill my whole Elementary School years. My shoes had holes in them. My mama got Christmas food and presents from the Church and signing us up with Secret Santa and a few times we had a rich family “adopt” us for Christmas which means they bought us EVERYTHING. So much food, clothes, toys, etc. THAT was the best Christmas. But yeah we were very poor. We didn’t live in a run down condemned home we lived in an apt based on income so she only paid $19 for rent. Mind u this was in the 80’s. I am a 70’s baby. But yeah I went thru it. My uncle worked at the farmers market and he’d bring us fruits and veggies and of course my mama got stamps but when food ran out at the end of the month we struggled til stamp time came back around. One month we ate pinto beans and cornbread for the whole month. My uncle brought us a 40lb bag of pinto beans from the market. But hey it was better than nothing! So yeah I’m really feeling this family and what they’re going through

As a person who grew up in poverty with parents who sacrificed so much and worked diligently to provide for my sister and I, I can tell you.... even having a conversation with someone who has never lived in poverty about the decisions you make to fulfill all your needs mental, physical, social, etc..... it's nearly impossible unless they are very empathetic.
A small example : When you have paid all your bills, and the only money you have that you get to choose how you spend it is the money you have for food.... sometimes you buy icecream, and treats instead of nutritional foods. Because it's a small joy you can provide yourself, when you can't afford vacations, or clothes you enjoy wearing, or a home you're proud of, or to go to a movie or anything that's entertainment period.
It takes a lot of discipline to always make good choices when literally every penny counts.

Wealthy people don't typically understand the stress and work involved in trying to make it work with so little.
My dad had to buy junk cars, and make them work. That meant finding a car that was worth investing the money you have (which wasn't a lot) and make sure you can afford to fix it. You also invest time. When you're walking to work you're loosing daylight hours that would be spent working on the vehicle. Then if it falls through, and it doesn't work you have all this guilt and frustration about making a bad decision and wasting money. Gut wrenching guilt, because you feel like you've stolen from your family. A wealthy person can just go to a car lot and pick a car like picking out a t-shirt. They know it'll work, and if it doesn't it's probably warrantied, they afford to fix, it or trade it in.
I just see a lot of people in the comments being so judgmental and to me it's a reflection of their inability to understand how living in poverty effects everything in your life. Even how you make decisions, and prioritize things.
Update: They are all grown up now and doing well. The mom is doing well and is proud of her grown kids. They are a beautiful and strong bunch of survivors. The mom did an excellent job raising them.

It's probably still relevant if there are still situations like this going on, but I can see where it is no longer valid if that's no how things are anymore. Do these conditions no longer exist? Have the lunches changed, as well?

Sammantha Panther keep trying is right though. I'm poor too, so I try not to be judgmental about these people. But being poor myself I know that it is absolutely no excuse for being dirty. We grew up poor,on welfare with a single mom. There were times in my life where we had literally nothing to eat. But, our homes were always spotless and we were always clean.
I grew up poor, and my grandmother had TEN children, but we NEVER LIVED IN FILTH...I remember everybody waking up on Saturdays, cleaning the house, being poor does NOT mean you need to be nasty, that children need to be dirty, or that ur home needs to smell bad, I would rather go into a public restroom and 'borrow' some of their liquid soap and toilet paper, then live in filth
