Rehashing what some earlier viewers mentioned: Sacred Flame is a Cantrip, not a level 1. You can Bless and then keep her safely behind your front line to maintain concentration and still throw out good Radiant damage every turn.
The Duergar is one of the few fights where Shadowheart actually gets to use Turn Undead. But no one ever remembers to! (Including me!) Good luck with the run
It's a little bit of a hassle, but if you hover an enemy and press "T" on your keyboard you can inspect them and see their ability points to make better informed decisions on what kind of hex to put on them.
Hey Pally if you want to get more out of Shadowheart as far as damage goes you should be using Sacred Fame as her go to damage action when not using spell slots. With her being a full caster the Sacred Flame cantrip will ultimately do more damage than a melee weapon or a crossbow. Also it's base of an enemy Dexterity save not an attack roll so you should be able to use it in melee without drawbacks of other ranged attacks.
Sacred flame doesn't do more damage scaling with wisdom or proficiency, it's a 1d12 but it's not an attack roll DC it's a Dex save DC which is commonly much harder to land. If you really want to get the most out of shadowheart early, respec her to 14 Str, 12 dex, 16 con, 8 int, 16 wis, 8 con. Her starting stats are quite spread but everything except Int and Cha is useful. She originally has 13 Str 13 Dex, This is probably because she uses Str for her weapons as she doesn't have many profs and Dex is used for extra AC with medium armour, but sitting on even stat thresholds is wasted points imo. She also needs a ton of Con because Cleric has access to if not the most Concentration spells in the game, then ofcourse Wis for spell prof, DC and attack rolls
@@Nocturnal9720 Sacred Flame is actually 1d8 base scaling to 2d8 at lvl5 and 3d8 at lvl 11. So at this point with the party being lvl 5 it's 2d8 damage with dc 13 save from Sacred Flame and 1d8+2 damage at +5 to hit from her basic weapon even if the enemy has +4 to dex saves (which would mean a dex stat of 18 for most creatures) it starts to out scale the average damage per round of the melee attack swinging against just 13 AC. But the statistical average bonus to dex saves among creatures in D&D is lower than 4 being actually closer to 2. At which point Sacred Flame starts to out pace the melee weapon at just 10 AC.
@@evang3802 the damage starts to out pace, But sacred flame doesn't use a spell casting modifier for any bonus damage, most enemies on average have 10 or higher Dex, Sacred Flame is only a 12 DC, you will always be around 60% chance to hit with sacred flame and if it's a high chance, then it's probably an enemy who's weak in general to begin with. Sacred Flame is one of the worst cantrips in the game, I'm not gonna sacrifice early melee prowess on a cleric just for the hopes it'll be good at 5 and get a bit more lucky hitting it
@@Nocturnal9720 I actually messed up. Shadowheart's pre lvl 5 spell DC is 13, her lvl 5 DC is 14, and I was giving her mace is a d8 not a d6. I have no idea where my head was at. That being said she's still not hitting very often with her melee weapon even with your stat spread. She only has +4 to hit before lvl 5 with your spread so at AC 13 she only has that 60% hit chance. And with the correct damage for her weapon now the average damage per hit is only 1 more than Sacred Flame before lvl 5. To be fair your math was wrong with the DC 12 assumption and Scared Flames actually hits 60% of the time at 10 dex when the DC is 13 because dice math is weird. Melee is viable lvl 1-4, but Pally's party is level 5 at this point, and he hasn't shifted her stat spread as far I'm aware, so everything before lvl 5 doesn't matter to the advice I gave.
@@evang3802 You are right on most ac counts I'll concede, I misremembered Sacred flames Dex DC, and considering pallys party she should focus on being a full caster for now yeah, but once she gets Level 7 with divine strike then level 8 for polearm master, she becomes a force of nature with a spear or glaive in two hands for melee conserving her spells slots solely for keeping people form being downed or controlling the battlefield, the only damaging cleric spells I use are guiding bolt (rarely) Glyph of warding until later Spirit guardian (op af imo) and flame strike
I think one of my favorite things about this playthrough is that your noise filter seems to be off, so we can actually hear your screams and yells and you're not cut off! I always hate hearing your voice cut out when you get excited and loud.
Clicked on one of your vids just for background noise while I got some stuff done.....my stuff didn't get done. Love the play by play narration especially during battle.
I don’t have this game yet. I’m saving up money to rebuild my computer so I can play it. Until then I think two episodes a day is needed. For my mental health 😂
Stealing the Druid's sacred artifact you don't even know if you can use and may have no value to anyone else, just because you can?! *Chaotic Eeeeevil*
Disengage Pally. When Shadowheart( any caster ) is stuck with multiple enemies around them in a zone of silence you can use the disengage action to safely run them away without opportunity attacks instead of leaving them near the swarm of enemies and take a weak weapon attack.
Belated Shadowheart: She is probably the best of the origin characters to back up a sneaky character, she has every utility spell - or the potential to get them - and a solid selection of the hood cleric spells. Her drawback is her *terrible* Dominion if you’re not a stealth character. I mean, I notice even you Pally forget her Divine Channel advantage on stealth and Pass Without Trace always available spells! It seems… unfair to respec her. I kinda disagree with the Sacred Flame thing - Firebolt just does more consistent damage for me, but it’s very opponent dependent. Cleric and Druid spells require clever uses - Create Water makes everyone wet, why is this something you want? (Other than for Karlach :-P) Because they Resist Fire, but are vulnerable to ice and lightning. Which sets up some stunning (pun intended) combos. Bless is absolutely a go-to spell, but I also recommend Aid - it doesn’t give Temporary Hit Points (like I thought) and instead stacks with that, for 5 free HP per level it’s cast at, so between 5-20 for a 2nd plus level spell. I personally find Guided Bolt, or whatever it’s called - the level 1 radiant damage spell, does 4d6 and gives accuracy - to be basically the best level 1 spell she has. You also should probably consider dropping Cure Light Wounds, it’s just not cost-efficient for a spell slot - and only spot-heal with Healing Word when someone is downed or you desperately need to keep them up, otherwise you want to use potions. Grease is also amazing, because it knocks people prone and unlike in 5E this costs them their action. Spirit Weapon is absolutely your friend, and Shadowhearts friend. Aside from Aid, I rarely use my 2nd level spells on anything else. Then you have Spirit Guardian at Level 3, for literally free damage once per turn when she moves near someone. Now, this style can make you Long Rest more - I certainly do - and it definitely shifts *when* your worn-out fights occur, but I also found a liberal use of Elixirs of Giant Strength on my fighters made me long rest a lot less as a counter-balance, but YMMV. I agree, like many Clerics she’s pretty weak when she’s out of spells, which for her are long rest based so she has to husband them - which is *why* 1D8 per level + 3 is just not worth it compared to 4D6 damage. Or you know, 3D10 for cause wounds. And please, please, I know there are like 40 videos after this and most of this advice is probably useless, I’m mostly just saying this to make myself feel better… but *please* use multi attack when it’s available. I was crying 😢😂😢 :-)
Shadowheart would have been so much better if she didn't have any weapons when you first get her as that would mean Pally looked into her spells and realized how Cantrips like Sacred Flame works
If you feel like shadowheart is weak you can respec her into a ranger5 and then go full into cleric afterwards... just play her as a Moon Priestess, an Archer Priest. The main advantage is that they are both Wisdom casters and their casts stack.. your spells wont be such high level but you will have many and can use a reliable weapon with an extra attack from ranger 5 Cleric then benefits you mostly with alot of healing. From ranger spells just take anything for bows, and probably best to go Gloom Ranger / Life or Trickster Priest.
Hey Pally, maybe you didn't include this in the edit, but it didnt look like you looted the corpse of the dude in the vault, just asked him your questions 5.
Learn to use all your actions and heal your low hp characters. Throw potions on allies to revive or heal them. Way too many unnecessary downs on your team.
I'm sorry pally we need two of these a day

or we riot?

that ending xD
