The title itself already says a lot about how their relationship has changed. Tubbo still sees Tommy as his "friend", even if he exiled him and couldn't see him before he "died". But Tommy, although still misses Tubbo, has already slowly accepted the fate that he is now the president of L'Manberg and has much more to look after and prioritise before him. The Tubbo Tommy now sees is the president, not the Tubbo who would follow his endless fights with Dream for the discs. The image of Tubbo he's still clinging onto is now gone, while he is cold, lonely and missing his best friend, Tubbo is somewhere else hunting down his enemies, getting his own revenge and fighting for his country.

Yes exactly. This song made me cry.
Three details i noticed that bring this together!
1. The strings on each compass make a heart, which i found super cute cuz i know what it's like to lose your best friend-
2. Tubbo's birthday was today, so having a song with him in it is amazing.
3. Tommy's lyrics go at a faster tempo than Tubbo's and his side seems to have more lines for that reason. Tommy usually talks a lot faster than Tubbo during streams, and Tubbo only says things when someone or something prompts him to.
for number 3, it also shows his sincere sorrow. It's harder to speak through pain and hurting. There's also the fact that he would assume there would be no response. Tubbo is writing about how he feels, while Tommy is doing that and telling some things that have been happening.

The slight difference in tense "I wish I had more time" vs "I wish I have more time" makes a whole world of difference! Tubbo is saying that he wanted to make use of his time and is regretting it, while Tommy is saying that the amount of time he has left is limited.
The question when Tommy asked "I thought it was us against the world" vs Tubbo's "You told me" proves that Tommy no longer sees Tubbo as his ally and has distanced himself, but Tubbo still saw them on the same side, and feels hurt and confused by the cutting off of ties.
Finally, the way that Tubbo signed off with "sincerely yours" while Tommy signed off with "sincerely" shows how Tubbo still sees Tommy as a friend, and is willing to go to great lengths for him, but Tommy has already held Tubbo at arm's length.

The “Your Tommy” and “Your Tubbo” compasses are the last signs of Tommy’s and Tubbo’s long friendship, but after Tommy is told that Tubbo lost his “Your Tommy” compass after exiling him and Tubbo finally comes to visit Tommy who is still in exile, Tommy realised that Tubbo finally has betrayed and forgotten about him and Tubbo noticed that Tommy jumped off his last built cobblestone tower and died, so Tommy ran away from his exile place after Dream blew up Logstedshire and Tubbo refocuses on his country’s enemies but only to failed to kill Technoblade because of Dream, and so both Tommy and Tubbo planned to do whatever they could do and to fight back their most long lasting and most hated enemy, Dream
I just keep thinking that Tubbo will lose his last live ether to dream or techno and Tommy will be devastated when Tubbo gets killed before Tommy because he was there for a "good time" not long time and even that was prohibited to him
There was always a conflict and he gets betrayed. He still fought for what he thought was right and he was manipulated for it be his enemy.
And now he is hiding all this hurt that accumulated. And this while he is cannonically still a child.
I don't think we will see a hero arc or villain arc.
Dream really is such a good villain who lays in the shadows. Even though his moves are so obvious everyone on the SMP is like DREADED. They can't focus straight and think they need as much help as possible. Since Dream is not part of L'manbur and not part of the tyrants he has much more freedom to do his own bidding and honestly that's just W O W.

Underrated comment, this is so accurate
I love how you portrayed Tubbo here, people always sees him as to turning into schlatt but he actually isn't, he just did what he thinks is right for his country (just think how much damage would cost if he didn't exile Tommy)
Tommy wants his discs back because it's a sign of friendship and people call him a hero for sacrificing it and sure there's nothing wrong with trying to take it back but trying to take it back while risking your own country, the country you swore to protect (also a country that once was just a home and now filled with people living and hoping to have a responsible ruler) is just taking your title away.
Tommy thought tubbo will always side with him but Tubbo is now a President with responsibilities as a president, Tubbo thought this was the logical solution and it was, but people made him think he did the wrong thing, calling him "the next schlatt" whilst he's just doing his job as the president and doing what he promised to his country, he feels sad and guilty because he exiled his own bff and with the pressure his own people is giving him, he just followed them. What they think is right.
People said he's changed but he hasn't changed a single thing, sadly he's still a yes man under Quackity. He thinks he's in power but he is not. He is still getting ruled over and the rules they made are bringing L'manberg in more danger and as the ruler people say he is, he's blamed for the reckless decisions.
Bruh when your voices began overlapping I started crying.

List of things I love about this:
-When wearing headphones, Tubbo's part is in the left ear, while Tommy on the right, just like the picture
-The art mirrors eachother, much like how they both mirror eachother in the SMP
-Tubbo won't accept that his best friend is gone, so he is sitting on the bench
-Tommy has accepted that Tubbo isn't able to be with him all the time, he is moving on, so he is asending up the stairs
-Those two claims are also shown in the titles of the songs (@Purrpawz already said this but I'm putting it here too)
-The lyrics are exactly what the characters would say, and that is hard to write when trying to fit it to the form of a letter and a song
-The subtle harmonies that you only hear in this video, if you listen to just one of the songs alone you don't recognize it, but put them together and it is a beautiful harmony
-Tommy has been rising up from when he was alone, so he sings slightly higher than Tubbo who has been struggling after losing his best friend
-The period at the end of the video after "your Tubbo/Tommy" just hits you right in the feels
-The little details that tie into the events in the past and during that arc of the story
-The coloring of the clouds. In film/theater, blue on or around a person will show that they are likely to be seen as misunderstood characters who fight for good (aka the protagonist), this sound alot like Tubbo, and to mirror that dark blue into a red/pink for Tommy just shows more for why they mirror eachother as characters
-Precious Jewel Amor and Kanaya singing this together is just beautiful
-They took the time to edit the background so both compasses were complete, instead of just mirroring the image and erasing one side

Also maybe if you haven't done so already, maybe make a theme for Ranboo. He's really a more complex character than some believe and that's what makes him so underrated!

Tommy’s version sounds more bold, yet Tubbo’s sounds discreet and quiet, yet holding the same power as Tommy’s.
Tubbo’s seems more personal also, discussing about the good old days and being more straightforward. However, Tommy refers him as Mr. President and is a bit more formal, and his is more sad. But they both come back together on some lines, and they harmonize nicely.
At the end, Tubbo says “Sincerely yours,” and Tommy only says “sincerely.” That probably doesn’t have anything to do with it, but I wanted to point it out.
Anyway, this was very well done and got me emotional! Great job! ❤️
I think because Tubbo is grieving because there's a certain weight to death than losing your best friend because you could still talk to them later. Tubbo thinks that he won't get any response and that he lost his best friend forever, no going back at all, while Tommy knows that Tubbo is fine and well, and instead grieving the loss of friendship, not life.
To lose someone you love through death makes you less confident, it makes you feel like nothing can be right anymore. At least for Tommy there is/was still hope.
Let's not forget the "i wish I HAD more time" that always. Makes. Me. Cry.
OH MY GOD OKAY I CAN'T RESIST WRITING ANOTHER ESSAY
CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT HOW BEAUTIFULLY THE LYRICS GO TOGETHER. PLEASE.
ESPECIALLY DURING THE TWO CHORUSES.
In the chorus, it's Tubbo saying "i once assured you" with Tommy saying "we were supposed to", implying it's Tubbo breaking his promise with Tommy. And in the second chorus, it's the same, Tubbo saying "I used to tell you" and Tommy once again saying "we were supposed to". It's so representative of the broken promises between them! I'm s o b b i n g
and I said this in my other essay thing, but I love how Tubbo is refering to Tommy with so much more familiarity, dropping the formalities. It's amazingly demonstrated in the second verse, when Tubbo just goes "I miss you" from the start, and Tommy continues to distance himself with the "Dear Mr. President". IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
And despite the fact that both of them end off with "your tommy/tubbo", Tubbo adds "yours" to the end of it, while Tommy does not- implications! It's a nice touch!

I wrote a essay like this too, it's just so amazing! They fit into their personalities, not to mention the fact the music itself is amazing!
Okay.
So for me there are three types of crying: personal crying, stupid crying (when it doesn't actually effect you and you genuinely don't know why you're crying), and silent crying (when you're not really crying but know you should be and want to but can't because you just understand everything so much).
Most Dream SMP songs make me stupid cry, but this one made me silent cry. I usually do a pretty good job of remembering that this is all a roleplay, but this song completely made me forget.
And there's the art which adds another level to it, and both of your voices are so amazing and you compliment each other so well. I liked how you were both singing at the same time instead of alternating, which is something I haven't seen too much of.
But holy crap I cannot begin to describe how much I love this
Yeah, I'm definitely a silent crier when it comes to this sort of stuff, maybe with some damp eyes sometimes, and I agree with the lyric thing.
It's a bit weird (not heard to often) and may be a bit hard to hear the different parts, but it's uniqueness is why I love it. And when they do harmonize, it's even more special.
But I swear, every time they sing "everything will lead back to you" it sounds kind of bitter, so my artist brain sees many tears

Much more literal now, as well as sad
This was gorgeously put together. The lyrics are brilliant: even tiny things, like the way the sentances are structured and how each side delivers lines, are really perfect. The art is beautiful and conveys the emotional really well. The exact placement of the lyrics and overlap of the words must have taken so much planning and consideration. You get a perfect grasp of the situation even with how vague it is. The 'everything will/just lead(s) back to you' hits even harder when you hear both versions combined. It's good at showing how much they both think about the other, and how important they both are, but in different ways. Tubbo has a guilty conscience and misses how things were. He needs his friend back. He's surrounded by people but feels the loss. Tommy is isolated, abandoned and alone, needing someone he can talk to and depend on. Just Tommy's simple 'how have you been?' When compared to Tubbo's immediate worry and guilt illustrates that. Both songs are calls that will never be answered. I can't really speak for the music, I don't know enough to go into detail there, but I'm sure it was thought-out as well. Overall, incredible work.
Edit: not to mention your gorgeous voices. They sound great on their own, but together, damn.

Yeah- one of the more obvious examples I noticed in the lyrics would be at 1:24, where Tubbo talks about growing together, but Tommy talks about fighting tyranny together. It really reflects on their personalities; Tubbo is more of a pacifist and Tommy is more of a warrior. Even though they both have the same wish to be together and do things together, you can really feel their own unique selves in the song...

I have been crying, for a solid ten minutes now. Why must you do this?
But well… it's so… symbolic of their friendship. While Tubbo's falling, and drowning in sadness, alone, Tommy's taking his place up in the clouds, also alone. While Tubbo's being corrupted by the power he holds, he feels guilty he caused Tommy so much pain. Tommy's alone and scared, walking into a happy illusion, a fantasy, which is what he needed. But well… here's what I told to a friend.
It's truly a letter, almost like an ode to their memories that they had.
Tommy's is like he's saying goodbye to the Tubbo he once knew, as a… child? And Tubbo says goodbye to a friend that he thinks is gone, because of and his actions. And… they're just incomplete without each other, with the compass references, and how their friendship once was.
And the art? Tommy is going up alone. Up… one of his towers?! It's like, he's ascending, and getting somehow purer, but alone, without Tubbo as his longtime best friend.
And Tubbo's art. The bench. They once shared it, and now, the spot that was occupied by Tommy is empty, like he's… forever gone.

Can we just consider that neither the L'manberg team or Tommy and Techno's team are the good guys. Take into account the story of Coriantumr and Shiz from the Book of Mormon. None of the, were truly the one's fighting for good, and both of their motives were to wipe out each other's armies. Coriantumr and Shiz ended up being the only two left alive after their armies had slain one another. Eventually, after a long-lasting battle that could fit right in a greek epic, Coriantumr decapitated Shiz. Shiz, his body still set on slaying Coriantumr actually raised itself up on the ground a few inches, then falling back down, lost of life. Coriantumr leaned on his sword, and later died of exhaustion and fell to the earth beside Shiz's cold body. They both had such a desire to kill each other that they ended up actually doing so, but nobody on either side remained.
I can see this being in the storyline, another death arc, the animatics for that would be amazing and incredibly sad Jesus Christ, lovely comment doe lol
I see your point, only difference you failed to see: Techno’s fight isn’t with Tommy, it’s with tyranny. Tommy’s just another guard to him, nothing more. Techno isn’t in the fight to kill, he’s there to free people from tyranny. Techno versus Tommy isn’t like this at all, it’s a one sided fight.

it really portrays how they are parallel to each other, synced but still separate. They still have that unbreakable bond, but they're now physically separated, and these songs/song illustrates that perfectly.
"Everything leads back to you" I can imagine them two imagining each other, laughing at the memories but then remembering that they aren't there anymore and their smiles falling...
Edit 2: Really, you two are so talented. HOW DO YOU GUYS DO THIS?!?! THIS IS LIKE, BROADWAY LEVEL (in terms of both music AND lyrics AND just the fact that you MADE TWO SONGS THAT PERFECTLY SYNCED!) You HAVE to write a musical! I'll resist a year without Dream SMP music if we get a whole musical with original songs... Far-fetched, I know, I'm a wildly imaginative person.

I love their final words, Tubbo’s “Sincerely yours” vs Tommy’s just “Sincerely” showing how Tubbo still sees himself as Tommy’s best friend but Tommy doesn’t think of himself as Tubbo’s best friend anymore. Ahhh I love it all so much!!
As cool as listening to both sides separately, listening to them together, although their so different in lyrics and in feelings, they mix so well and I think it shows while the pieces are unique and can stand on their own, together they really shine brighter than before. They don't take away when their apart but when their played together they add on together. I think being able to achieve that just proves how good you guys are and I commend you on that. Well done. I loved it so much

I like how Tommy’s lyrics start out louder but grow quieter, which is like how he started out as the crazy child of the SMP and grew more mature and selfless with time, while Tubbo was quieter at first but got louder, since he started as mostly Tommy’s sidekick and ended up becoming the President with more political power than anyone aside from Dream

Looking back at this song, especially them together, sends chills down my spine. Throughout the video, one of the lines is "Everything will lead back to you."
As time had passed, they had gotten the disks once again. Coming back to fight alongside eachother for what they believed was right. They repaired the damage brought by separation. After all the trauma and despair... it all led back to Tommy and Tubbo. I just think that's beautiful.

The fact that the story progressed so much more makes this seem like a sad distant memory.
I know, right? I think I didn't truly realize how much their friendship had strained with all the pressure and trauma over the course of the smp. But recently I was going back and watching the story all over again, and seeing the relationship between tommy and tubbo in the first disc + L'manburg war, and even before the elections made me remember what they had been. It feels like so long ago now, but they have been through so much. And I was thinking "huh, tommy and tubbo are acting different in these earlier streams, their characters feel different" and then tubbo's little speech/gift to tommy before the election played and it hit me like a truck.
I know I'm late but yeah! Especially since the DreamSMP is getting reset because of the update. All of these animatics and songs are gonna feel like distant memories and the nostalgia is gonna make me cry so many times.

To stop crying over this is to exit this fandom entirely. To do that you need to leave the DSMP behind (physically and emotionally). Problem: According to God’s statistics less than 2% of people have been able to leave this fandom completely. Also it’s practically impossible to leave.
So, don’t leave. Chill with the fandom and cry with the rest of us :)

Also I love the fact that for tubbo it looks like the moon is rising and the sun has just set, it seems as if it is early in the night. While for Tommy, it's around midnight or later. Its as if Tommy feels he has gone through the worst of it/is going through the worst of it and tubbo feels his world will only get darker. This adds a whole new meaning to the line 'I wish I had more time'
Also, imagine having to plan your best friends funeral 🥺. I wonder if dream will go. I bet Tommy and techno will be watching behind a tree or something XD
Also the clouds look like the are trying to push them together, as if even the skies know this isn't right.
The fact that tubbo is looking down and Tommy is looking up also says alot honestly. Tubbo is grieving and regretting alot, he feels as if he's made the worst decision of his life and doesn't want to face the 'cold, hard bitter truth' while Tommy is forced to face it, looking it in the eyes. Also the staircase he's on could symbolise a few things:
1:it could be the tower he planned to jump off of, to end it all and he wanted his last thought to be of tubbo 'I think I found my warmth' referring to death.
2:it could be him rising above all the pain, accepting what has happened as he's not quite at the top yet but, he's close.
3: it's him looking towards the heavens, trying to be as close to the 'heavens' as possible. He's looking towards the stars for guidance.
4: it's him looking over his lands, seeing the world for the first time from a different view. He misses the ground but he knows the way down will look even scarier than the way up. Also, it will take longer to find a way down, it would be easier to just reach the top.
5: it's symbolising how alone he feels. He stands up there, alone. He can see that even in the skies, the stars have friends while he feels alone. Tubbo is sitting, as he has lost all hope. Tubbo is grieving. He doesn't have the strength to stand while Tommy, he's growing more numb and accepting the pain. Tommy knows there's a chance for him to talk to tubbo again, which is why he still stands. Tubbo thinks he missed his chance and wasn't even there for his last moments. Tubbo thinks his last ever moment with Tommy was when he said:
"Dream, please escort Tommy out of this nation"
And when he said:
"Goodbye, Tommy"
And turned his back on him. He thinks that, that was it.
6:tommy is looking, he's searching for something to defend, to protect. That's all he's ever done or known. Now that he has nothing, what's the point?
Also, notice how tubbo is visibly wearing the scarf while with Tommy, we may not know (or I'm blind XD). This tells us, Tommy is unsure if tubbo is his friend still. We may be unsure if he sees tubbo as a friend but that Cape, that looks simular to Technos Cape. This tells us Tommy is accepting having to trust techno and sees him as someone who will be behind him no matter what. A Cape makes a person seem flashy and cool, it also symbolises power. Tommy feels stronger knowing techno is on his side. Sure, the Cape has tripped you in the past, but it also is useful.

These songs mix beautifully in a lot of ways, but one of the ways that stands out to me is that after Tubbo says "I can't move on/From the pain and the loss that I gave you" Tommy says "Not for a long time". In Tommy's theme, that shows that he doesn't think he has much time left alive, but here it could be interpereted as Tommy saying that he can't move on from exile for a long time-but that he can eventually.
I dont know why but for some reason I did NOT expect them to synch up like that. My jaw has dropped and tears are streaming. This is so absolutely incredible ❤

I think its really cool how tommy's side is more formal and tubbo's side is more to a friend, I also really like how tubbo is quiet in the song and is louder in the 'everything will lead back to you' part as if convinced that it will happen while tommy gets quieter in that part

Little late to the party but things that I really liked about this song was that it defined so much about both of them as people and how they view each other - from the beginning of their friendship to now when things feel more hazy. It has such big characterization of how Tubbo regrets his decision for finally choosing to make a decision with his head instead of his heart, shown from how nostalgic and pained his half had been. In contrast, Tommy having a more fast paced and realistic sense to the song brings about the entire mindset of when he was on the tower, ready to jump. That moment was when he reflected on everything that has happened to him and when he takes on the reality of everything. Even when he does take this reality, he still wants the best for Tubbo as his friend though this entire exile has had them grow apart.
