Carcassonne is one of those gateway games that people mention often alongside Catan and Ticket to Ride. It was one of the earliest game to use a tile-laying mechanic.
The hardest thing about Carcassonne by far is the farmer scoring. In this video I go over the rules and give tips to score farmers.
NOTE: I used an earlier edition for this scoring example, and apparently a new edition came out and completely changed farmer scoring. Check your rulebook to be sure which edition you have!

In the recent versions the rules read more like the farms get the points and not the city's. So you would count how many castles or city's touch a certain farm. Farms are controlled by whoever has the most meples in that farm. If a city touches two or more farms, each farm scores that city or castle.

That is correct. I just bought The 20th anniversary edition. That is exactly how it is explained. Farms are owned by whomever has the most meeple on the farm, then 3 points (not 4) are awarded per adjacent city.

This is the first edition rules. Most sets have the 3rd edition rules now:
Each city is worth 3 points per field with a farmer, you don't look at how many different farmers touch a specific city, then score points based off of that. You start with the farmer, then see how many cities the field it's in touches, and score off of that. Cities can also be score multiple times, depending on farmer placement, as more than one field can be touching the same city.
Of course, you can still have more than one farmer in a field, in case there is another player there too deny them a share of points.

This was pointed out a few years ago and I updated the title and description to reflect the changes

Red would have majority of the small castle... looks right to me.

Isn’t it 3 points for a farmer per city?

I believe those should be 2 different farms. I think a city can host multiple farms but i'm not sure

Yes, this is the confusing part about farmer scoring. The best way to look at it is that FARMS don't score points, CITIES score points based on who has the most adjacent farmers for each individual city.

@@BoardGameClub The "Supplementary Rules" leaflet in the latest edition of the Carcassonne base game from ZMAN says this is not correct. The rules specifically state that all independent fields are scored separately. In the example you have on the table there are six independent fields: one is shared by red and blue, one is occupied by red only, and one is occupied by blue only (the other three fields have no farmers). The rules state that all those fields are scored separately, and because the right-most red farmer is actually in his own separate field, he has no way of contributing to any majority with the left-most red farmer. Therefore, according to these rules, the left-most blue and red farmers share one field and each score the same points for TWO cities, the right-most red farmer has a majority in his field and scores all the points for ONE city, and the right-most blue farmer has a majority in his field and scores all the points for ONE city.
So I disagree with your "framing" of the farmer situation where you say you should think of the CITIES as scoring instead of the FIELDS, because in your example blue does not get points for the two-tile city, which is incorrect. These "Supplementary Rules" also state that each city touched by a farmer is only worth 3 points (not 4 like you say), so maybe you are playing by different a rule book? All I can say is that the example you show is incorrect according to the rules that came with my version of the game.

@@VaingloriousGabagool I just read the latest edition rules and it does indeed seem like they changed the rules, probably because people were having trouble with the scoring!

@@BoardGameClub Thanks for the confirmation. I only just just started playing Carcassonne recently, so with your response it does appear that my own understanding is based on the "updated rules" from the most recent edition. Originally I was watching this video to help solidify my rules knowledge (which it actually did in a way I suppose), but I initially came away more confused than I needed to be. This must be a frustrating situation for you content creators, as I wonder just how many out-of-date videos there are out there for all sorts of games, which is obviously not your fault of course.
