      Looking at how they made the show, it's fair to say that both shows happened. Just at different times in galactic history... which is weird, but a nice touch by producers who have a obvious love of the original that they let that come out in their work.

  • @spartancanuck

    I loved the re-imagined series, because it had the feel of an actual war story, and one that can easily be lost. You watch the Star Wars movies and you never really get that whole sense of things from the Rebel Alliance: no sense of exhaustion, or that they're pushing themselves through something desperate.
    The Raptor is, story-wise, a good ship. It feels useful, but it has its limitations. It gets stuff done. It's neither a plot-armored super-weapon, nor something that's just there to get blown up. It actually comes across as a tough little workhorse and force multiplier doing very dangerous jobs (and sometimes getting the short end of the stick).

    I loved the Raptor, and I never understood the criticisms made towards it. Like you said it is the work horse of the fleet, the eyes and ears of all viper squadrons, and it had way more versatility than any other ship. Plus, I always thought that the design was pretty cool. Especially, when they introduced the attack raptor variant! I jumped with glee when I saw that. I should note that I think the Raptor was a little overused, it had too many responsibilities assigned to it. My best guess is that all the other ships that would have taken on those roles were destroyed in the Fall. For example, stealth missions would have probably been assigned to smaller battlestars similar to the Osiris and small vessels like the stealthstars, but they were all probably destroyed. The same goes for troop transports. They probably had vessels similar to the Pelican in the Halo universe but even those were all destroyed, or they didn't put much thought into what that would look like since they knew that most of the BSG story would take place in space. They did introduce a white and red shuttle that they claimed serve as a troop transport (you can Google it and you can see multiple times in the miniseries) but it does not look military at all. It looks so out of place next to the other military vessels, though I would later find that it is a nod to the original series shuttle in the RDM universe it looks more like a civilian vessel converted to fill the role. Anyway, RDM BSG is one of the best sci-fis of all time and definitely the best BSG to date.

    When I was playing Battlestar Galactica Online, I filled this role in my clan. I would scout in the raptor and the raptor FR, get close to enemy fleets and vessels, drops a beacon and have my whole group jump in on top of them. I would do this with enemy space stations too. A group would go high or low and fly off detection behind the defensive lines and behind the forward arch of the space station to within 200km and drop a beacon. Then boom my guys where there to wipe it out, I would set up for the next space station as they were killing this one. It worked well, with the computer, sensors and countermeasures. Because of this the Raptor will always have a special place in my heart. Was very sad to see the game taken down and ended.

    One of the hardest ships to design is the *small multi-role vessel.* What do you compromise, what do you leave out, what do you make optional? It is a far more difficult balancing act than a pure combat vessel (which you can tell if it works or not by the simple metric of ship vs ship combat).
    A StarFury from Babylon 5 could do exactly the same job as a Viper. Just engines and guns and the systems to control and aim them are what's needed.
    For multi-role vessels, with a large ship you can just keep adding stuff, but with a small vessel *_it's like sculpture,_* what you take away or leave out is what defines it.
    And that is where the Raptor is a great multi-role vessel.
    It isn't bloated, yet it does everything it needs to, and at a budget.
    It fullfills the requirements of a bunch of different ships specifications, freeing up inventory.
    It is the *Holy Grail* of multi role vessels, flexible and versatile, while not being so overly complicated or expensive that it can't be fielded in numbers.
    And while Daniel prefers specialised ships for every role, even in combat, I prefer a mix of _pure_ dedicated combat vessels, supported by multi role do everything ships. Their job is to ensure the pure combat vessels can use their abilities to the fullest _to inflict hurt,_ by taking on the roles that would be detrimental to pure firepower and survivability if they were included in the dedicated strike vessels.
    That even carries over to capital ships in various IP's
    For example in Trek, Defiants backed up by standard versatile Starfleet ships (such as Intrepids).
    But in Trek all weapons work on all size ships, it's just a matter of total firepower, not specialised weapons for each ship type, so you don't need screening vessels for various opponents.
    And their larger shuttles are the ultimate small multi-role, being both combat and general purpose ships.
    In Star Wars, well that's complicated. But a pure capital ship for ship to ship combat, but with both point defence and capital grade weaponry.
    Then a well rounded ship, built on the same space frame _if possible,_ that can do ground operations, carrier duty, troop transport ect, all the stuff that is included in every Star Wars capital ship (and smaller frigates and corvettes as well!), even if it's only task is going head to head with other big ships.
    Screening vessels have the issue that they can be specifically targeted by their rock/paper/scissors and taken out, leaving the too specialised ISD (for example) vunerable.
    In the ISD case have your captial ships just go after the flak support ships, then bug out and leave the ISD to your fighters once it's AA guard fleet is turbolasered.
    And in Star Wars the greatest fighter was the X-wing (the Tie Defender was never released in the mainstream) that could do all jobs pretty well.
    Even in large ships in BSG, pure carriers like BaseStars were cannon bait to Battlestars. The only real dedicated specialized front line ship concept that would work (and thanks to jump drives, everywhere was the front line) would be a pure cannon and armour battlewagon that was designed to blast enemy capital ships while point defence and flak kept the fighters and ordnance off it.
    And even then it would need a versatile companion ship to provide fighter support for large-scale operations beyond hit really hard and run.
    *There's specialisation and then there's overspecialisation.*
    And then there's versatility, and the Raptor is it's king, *perfection of the concept* for small ships.
    If the Colonial Empire had survived, it would have become a iconic ship, looked back on with affection.

    The Raptor is one of the best, most "realistic" starfighter-class ships ever designed. I contend the U-Wing from Rogue One was an attempt to bring that style of ship into Star Wars, because such a ship is always a good thing to have.

    Personally I think the Raptor was too multirole. AWACS, EW support and reconnaissance should have been it's only role, with possibly rescue and recovery. But rescue and recovery would actually be handled better by a dedicated assault/drop ship vessel. Heavy attack, bomber, or ground support should have been a separate vessel entirely.
    However that said the Galactica was about to become a museum when the second war started. Whether other vessels with more dedicated roles existed we may never know because they didn't survive and none were on the Galactica. The fact the Raptor could be fit into these roles is a good thing and makes sense in universe.

  • @todabrilla
    @todabrilla 5 років тому

    I really liked the Raptor, but I always felt that they had it performing too many roles. The Raptor is perfect for duties like the ECM/EWF role and scouting. I am even okay with its use in picketing and carrying dispatches. Heck, it could even serve as a customs service cutter in the Colonies. But there really should be a few shuttles/tenders to take the load off the Raptor. At the least there ought to be a medium personnel shuttle and a heavy troop carrier/cargo carrier for when you don't need to send an AWACS plane/Apache Helicopter hybrid to serve as a lighter ferrying cargo or as an Admiral's barge transporting VIPs.

    What did I think about the raptors? -They needed to be utilized better.
    What did I think about the reimagined BSG universe? -Awesome, but Season 3 needs to be redone without a horrible plotline. It was the mid 2000s version of the ending of Game of Thrones.

      @sitoudien9816 5 років тому

      It's role is more like an attack chopper than a do it all vehicle. The U-wing seemed like a better all round vehicle. It's size, shape, and proportions was just right. The raptor is an ugly bulbous minivan. The creators choose the wrong design.

    • @jacksonheathen2092
      @jacksonheathen2092 5 років тому

      @@sitoudien9816 I thought the design was cool for the role it played. It was more of troop transport / ground support & reconnaissance craft than it was an attack fighter. But I see your point, it did kind of resemble a flying Ford transit cargo van.

    • @jacksonheathen2092
      @jacksonheathen2092 5 років тому

      @@sitoudien9816 Yes. The U-wing is a more handsome design. But (in my opinion) BSG already plagiarized Starwars by using the X-wing design for the Viper.

    What confused me about the reboot is why they did not use the two most advanced tactical advantages the original batttlestar had that been shelds which insures the ship is not take serious hull damage after even small battles and turbo lasers which dont need ammo and are more powerful advanced then projectile weapons it make the original battlestar galactica more advanced then the reboot one

    Anyways, could you try a sci-fi melee weapon focused video? Maybe like a ST vs SW vs BSG (does BSG have melee weapons? Lol). And make sure lightsabers lose, for comedic purposes, of course

    • @sundoga4961

      BSG doesn't have melee weapons, because they recognize that modern battlefields have no use for such things.

      Sundog A tell that to a Klingon, you’ll wake up in sickbay with a new hole. But I digress, In Star Trek, a universe in which dampening fields exist, melee weapon have a small, yet valuable place. As for BSG I’ve never actually seen an episode, unfortunately

Star fleet had a prototype type sniper rifle designed for use in dampening fields, it was never implemented, i cant for the life of me remember why, maybe it was to inhumane? Lol. not at all like humanly vaporizing your opponent with sizzling energy, oh those gurgling screams you hear as the persons body is ripped apart atom by atom? That just gas escaping lol
