    The original, 1978 Viper's inspired Air Force pilots to rename the F16 from fighting Falcon to Viper. The Viper's from Pegasus actually resemble the F16.

    I love the design and flight capabilities of the Viper mkII. Definitely a good homage to the original retro BSG with some nice modern takes. I have a soft spot for that "dart" design as a fast fighter interceptor but adding RCS and seeing them strafe targets like Babylon5 Starfury fighters is exactly how I picture what 0G space combat should look like in reality.

    Absolutely love the Viper MK II. The original show was created when I was a kid. My toy Viper was my #1 starfighter toy. Ranking even higher than my Kenner Xwing, TIE fighter or even the Millennium Falcon. Also loved the Battlestars even more than the Star Destroyers. Those facts are amazing considering my dad took me to the opening weekend of the original Star Wars. I have been a Star Wars fanatic since that day. But, BSG holds a very dear and exclusive place in my heart. And holy frack can those Viper MK IIs kick the felgercarb out of those Cylon Raiders. Speaking of the Raiders, I absolutely loved my toy Cylon Raider I had as a kid. I did not care for the Raiders in the SyFy reboot of BSG. The original 3 seater was way cooler. More like a traditional WW2, twin engine heavy fighter. I think I may be having a nerdgasm at the moment. @lorereload: thanks for the great videos. Keep up the awesome work, “helm ahead warp 9......engage!”

      Michael Fouse I think we’re the same age since you encapsulated my same experience and everything I felt about my toy Viper I had as a kid and my XWing. I used to obsess over my Viper drawings. I’m with you on the original cylon fighters, much cooler as a three seater with actual cylons flying them, I didn’t like the reimagined version. Although the new BSG Mark VII were aesthetically pleasing.

      Same! I had the Viper, the Raider, and the Colonial Scarab! (Had to go google that last one). When I watched the first episode premier night, I remember rooting for the raiders because I liked their appearance better than the Vipers.

      I currently own one viper w/ pilot, & 1 bullet, pretty good; one raider (the cover for centurion missing) I didn't realize didn'tcome w/ centurion... paid pretty penny for that little guy (some might think I lost my mind) but had to have the centurion pilot. had to have to "not play" w/ them like when I was a kid

      The original series Viper made sense using energy-based weapons. With the remake of the series and the Viper Mk II using ballistic ammunition, made no sense, since the position of the cannon on the wings would've made storing and even feeding 800 rounds of ammunition to the guns totally impractical if not impossible.

    BSG was a great example of ''Lost Syndrome'' i.e. making out that you've got some grand plan for the course of the series but in fact are making it up as you go along until long after the point that it actually makes sense. Season 1 and 2 of BSG was top quality sci-fi, and the first that I ever watched that came close to having realistic spaceship physics and technology. Even the start of season 3 with the New Caprica storyline was gripping stuff. Two of the most memorable times I ever had from a TV show was that cliffhanger where Boomer shot Adama and when the Galatica and Pegasus Vipers were facing off against each other. Truly classic scenes.
    But season 4, once they introduced the ''Starbuck is Jesus'' storyline, the retcons regarding the identities and history of the Final Five, the abandoned Earth occupied by long-dead ancient cylons, all of that tedious nonsense week after week about them trying to breed, and that RIDICULOUS out-of-character ending where everyone decides that abandoning their space-age tech for the life of a caveman without medicine or infrastructure was somehow sane, AND trusting that the Cylons that they've let free won't come back and finish the job that they started... became bullshit that retroactively ruined the whole series for me.
    Nowadays, every time I tune in to a repeat I think, ''Who cares if Galactica gets out of this situation or not? You're just going to deliberately scuttle it in the end anyway.''

    • @spacetownman
      @spacetownman 5 років тому

      Hmmm... you have a valid point regarding the latter seasons. You'd figure they'd stick to the original classic's statement "There are those who believe life here began out there...with forefathers of the Egyptians, Mayan, or Aztecs...some believe there are brothers of man far across the heavens..." But, Universal being Universal... they had their take on things and they didn't sit well with all of us. You'd think once on Earth they'd set things up and continue to grow (unlike the so-called New Caprica); but, instead they dumped all the ships into the sun, bred with the locals, and basically stuck with the "this has happened before and will happen again" moto as part of the story and Ron Moore's cameo on the very last episode. Don't get me wrong, I loved the series and the way it was delivered; but, there were some aspects I wasn't entirely happy with either like making Baltar a cult leader (for one), Lee resigning his commission to become a civil lawyer, and (yes,) the idea of Starbuck getting blown to bits and coming back unscathed. Unless I'm mistaken, according to the 1970's version there was a revolt among the Cylons; but, the information of it is sketchy. On the Classic series Cylons were made by a reptilian race of the same name who were eventually killed off thy their creations after being deemed obsolete. The idea of these mechanized wonders being made by man comes straight from James Cameron's cook book... I'm surprised he didn't sue Universal, unless he and Ron Moore had a sit down at "Starbucks" and exchanged a very large sum of money to go on without any legal backlash. In actuality, the reason behind the war (according to Glen Larson) was when the Colonials helped their neighbors the Hasari. After that Cylons and humans fought what was termed the "Thousand Yahren (or Year) war with only a handful of 12 battlestars, the armistice happened thanks to Baltar, and the search for Earth thus started after the Colonies were "Pearl Harbored" with only the Galactica as the main surviving warship. SyFy could have told the story a bit differently; but, since money talks and... well, you know... the powers that be figured they knew best. We the viewers, however, say otherwise and REALLY expected better. It would've been interesting to see an alternate end even if it wasn't a happily ever after finish. Who knows, maybe if they DO push a feature film that's more true to the original story and far far less than Ron Moore's rendition it might end up being what it was supposed to be in the first place: a Saga of a Star World.

      @@travishenty1113 I'm not sure that's the case. There was an American Writers Guild strike in between the seasons, but not a Canadian Writer's Guild strike. Thus shows like Stargate and whatnot were able to continue their production unabated. I think the problem really was just a loss of impetus. They really didn't know what else to do, they had a lot of characters that they had nothing really to do with (Baltar chief among them), they had to wrap stuff up without a clear plan. I think they just lost the groove, basically.

    This, and the T65 X-wing, are probably my favorite starfighters. Interestingly enough, the hatchet fighters (from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Princess Ardala’s ship’s fighters) were similar to the viper fighters, but the side wings were horizontal (like a delta-wing jet fighter) instead of angled downwards like the Viper. I wonder if someone “appropriated” the idea... :) The one thing I like about the new BSG is the integrated Cylon raiders (much like the Vulture Droids from SW:The Phantom Menace); the old Cylon raider ships, while visually neat, it never made sense that the Cylons didn’t just “plug in”, and had to use manual flight controls, or that they would need seats. Rather it would be more like the droid sockets in the X-wing. This would have made more sense from a technical perspective since (those) Cylons were not much different from C-3PO or RoboCop; there should be a machine-machine interface; maybe it was a deliberate plot hole so Humans could ride in them?
    I know there was (at least) one episode in which Count Baltar rode in one, and an episode in which Apollo and Starbuck took over one to escape an exploding Cylon Basestar!

    I've always enjoyed the Jeopardy name drop in the Starship lore videos. The Viper Mark II is kind of like a muscle car in space. It's Aesthetics make me think what would happen if Carroll Shelby designed a Starfighter. It just goes to show when you sacrifice form for function, function Returns the favor. A lot of Science Fiction requires the suspension of disbelief but with this particular Starfighter there's basically no disbelief to suspend. It genuinely looks like you could just get in the thing and it would actually work.

      My guess is the 8m length came from a wiki (because length is all it mentions), and then got confused between meters and feet for the rest. Because that thing is not the height of a 4-story building.
      Don't worry, even NASA has made that mistake before, though theirs had more expensive consequences

  • @Midnight.Shadows

    I was always under the assumption that the DRADIS in the Mark 2's were a small self contained system that pilots only used to alert that there was a ship around and its general location, then they'd pretty much ignore it after that as interference from Cylons could more or less completely disable a fighter mounted Dradis system. (See the miniseries, the Fighter Squad supported by a Raptor could barely figure out that a signal of like 40 raiders was actually only 2) I also think that on later models like the Mark VII you could probably beam information from a ship mounted Dradis to the vipers. (Again see that same battle in the miniseries as the Raptor was doing all of the actual scanning and the Vipers were not doing any)
    So I guess the TL:DR of that is, I think the Fighter Mounted Dradis was only used to say "Hey you got an enemy nearby" and that's about it. Any further information would be beamed from a raptor or battlestar as they were better equipped to cut through jamming. But that's just my theory.

    The best example of the show going “It just works” is when Apollo flies through that tunnel on the Tylium Asteroid and the reverse thrust comes out of the Air Intakes :D
    And I think the Viper Mk. II is pure kino. The design flows well despite it’s angled and blocky exterior, the livery is simple but fantastic and the fact that it fights in such wonderful combat scenes makes it even better. I think the only show that has more realistic space combat is the Expanse, but you just can’t beat The Expanse when it comes to realism.
    Although I would’ve liked to see the model evolution from the Mk. II to the Mk. VII, which changes were there? When did the engines start to become hexagons, when did the designs stop being so angled? It’s too bad we’ll never get anything to see on that.

    By far, the viper, is the most realistic sci-fi single person fighter/ship. When I was a kid I remember watching the original Battlestar Galactica tv show and saw the vipers. They amazed me and fascinated me to the point I was finding out ways to make one on paper. The simplistic look and aerodynamic way about it just felt real. The only thing I could say that made it feel like a completely possible as a real fly able ship/fighter was doing a comparison of the viper and the f-302 from stargate. These ships seem as damn near real and something that can/could be brought to fly in real life. This is all my personal views on it. But when you look at this ship you don’t think of an alien race made them. The build follows most of aviation principles. You have intakes, you have wings, you have engines, you have landing gear for both skid and runway landings. I see the viper and I see that it is sci-fi but not so crazy far fetched to not be possible. Thank you for this video!

  • @kreatillion1718
    @kreatillion1718 5 років тому

    The show mentions somewhere that the cockpit was deliberately placed where it is in the viper so that the pilot is essentially the center of mass. This would mean that as the fighter rotates and rolls around during engagements, the pilot experiences as little G force as possible. It also symbolizes the fact that the pilot is in control of the fighter.

    Here's one thing that bugs me - if you want to make a computer "hack-proof", you don't need to make it analog, just remove the network card/wifi adapter/Bluetooth adapter. You need some way to interface with a system to hack it - no interface, no hack...

    • @macbrown99
      @macbrown99 6 років тому +3

      This is something I always wondered about. Wouldn't it be a more effective strategy to just ensure no possibility of outside wireless interference? You could even isolate the communications/nav equipment completely without much trouble, if you were worried about them using the radio antennae to somehow gain access to the computers.

    • @stupidburp
      @stupidburp 6 років тому +1

      Systems could be also be hacked by direct access to the hardware without any network adapter. Such sabotage could take place well in advance of the battle and is a typical Cylon strategy.

    • @biostemm
      @biostemm 6 років тому +3

      Which would still require direct contact with said piece of equipment, and would be much smaller in scale/impact than some wirelessly transmitted vector. Heck, you could design your craft to use read-only media for data storage - sure, it'd complicate any updates you roll out, but you couldn't just insert some piece of code willy-nilly...

    • @stupidburp
      @stupidburp 6 років тому

      Have you seen the Caprica series? Direct access is pretty much how the Cylons started their rebellion. When they could not do it themselves they manipulated some humans to do sabotage work for them. That was before the models that are indistinguishable from humans were developed to infiltrate human society. They could easily target manufacturing and maintenance facilities to multiply the impact of their sabotage. That read only media infected with malware is going to make getting the essential military hardware back up much more difficult to do in a timely manner, which could result in serious losses.
      Sure, it is more difficult to mess with than networked computers, but even isolated systems have vulnerabilities and if compromised could result in large scale negative consequences. Cylons don't care that a task is inconvenient or a lot of effort - they are capable and relentless. Thus, those isolated systems should only be used if absolutely necessary. The Viper Mk II shows that high performance can still be achieved even without a sophisticated system, therefore it is safest to do without such a system. The later model Vipers were retrofitted to be more resistant to attack and that is an option. But it is an option that was taken out of desperation from limited resources of new fighters. The somewhat greater vulnerability of the newer models remained but was mitigated to some extent and they were flyable and had some capability enhancements and there was a need for even imperfect fighters so fly them they did.

    • @biostemm
      @biostemm 6 років тому +1

      Stu Bur I get what your saying, but my point remains - look up the concept of an "air gap" when it comes to protecting or isolating computer systems. Further, the fact that the biological Cylons were introduced is basically an admission by the writers that they couldn't create a compelling story without these indistinguishable infiltrators...

    I "believe" the "enhanced performance" was the difference between the first and second iterations of the onboard automated response system for orientation of this ship and thruster control verses optimal speed, it was the smartest auto-pilot they could afford to put on board for doing normal flying that wasn't hackable, very useful for avoiding collision and such as the computer did have the ability to limit G's of turns to protect pilots/parts, that many pilots "still" turned off most of the time. (best way to not get hacked. "Have you made sure its not plugged into a power outlet and removed all batteries?") Generation 3 forward made it harder and harder for the pilot to find the power cord to yank. All other systems relied on updated star charts for field orientation, thus had a dos or insertion point. Just for reference the only tech I don't get is the anti-gravity, the jump engines, and the actual primary thrusts, both Capital and strike craft. Are those Epstein drives? I think those are Epstein drives. The rest is actually very well grounded in present tech and tech ideas.

One way to explain away the lack of technical details in the series is that except for a select few no one really knows how their technology works anymore, and as long as stuff works they don't care how. Aside from consumer goods and military hardware, I got the feeling that there hadn't been much technological advancement for hundreds or thousands of years. Maybe the first Cylon War offset their stagnation for a few decades, but by the time of the Second War they had fallen back into their obsession with the minutia of their daily lives and keeping things the way they were.
    I also got the impression from the series that there had been little to no interstellar exploration since the founding o the colonies. They have FTL technology, that with some modification can jump pretty much anywhere as we see with the Cylons, but in thousands of years they only expanded to the orbits of a few stars in a densely packed part of the galaxy.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if the dradis system isn’t actually stored onboard the fighter. It might be one of the only networked systems on the ship. I don’t see anywhere or way they could store the machinery and computers required for magic space radar on a fighter like that. Plus the way the technology is designed it might be one of the harder things to hack since ship to ship communication and ship location and bearing is extremely important to the entire fleet. They are probably networked into the galacticas dradis system and receive instant updates on enemy ship formations.

    Since when did the UNN and MCRN have fighters? Ah the viper MKII also as much as it ticks off the fans of the show, the Series has shown many times that it doesn't use any type of magnetically accelerated projectiles. This was proven when the Chief took what appeared to be a 20mm shell and just tor it off with ease.
    As far as fighters go between the Viper and 302, I'll take the 302 simply because while not as nimble in space as a viper it beats it in atmospheric flight, armament, and one of the few non shielded fighters in syfy that can take a hit and keep on flying. On the other hand vipers are smaller and can be taken out by darn near anything, though the Dart still holds the record of being shot down by 30 rounds of 556, correct me if I'm wrong.

    From the classic era of starfighters. I'd have to say my top fighters are:
    1. X-Wing
    2. Viper
    3. Thunderfighter from Buck Rogers (which was an rejected design for the Viper -- same designer)
    The Star Fury came later and I can't figure out where to put it on the list.
    The weird thing is that the scifi fighters end up being something like Korean War-era jets. They're fast, they're deadly but they only have guns. It's funny how guided munitions get overlooked. Star Wars came out after Vietnam which was where guided munitions finally got worked out and yet we're basically dealing with gunfighters.
    It's kind of funny to consider how modern jets with beyond-visual-range missiles would smoke them. Also funny considering just how energetic the starfighter fuel has to be since they have enough delta-V to make it from planetary surface to orbit without refueling.

      Only judging design I'll take the classic Viper over the X-Wing and the Viper line as a whole over any other fighter line I can think of.
      Favourite small crafts in Star Wars would be the Y-Wing, though that's not a fighter I guess.

    I absolutely agree that the Viper Mark II is a beautiful spacecraft. However, the claim that it is the Colonial's best fighter I find very subjective. Though I like its design it is not my preference, probably because I wasn't introduced to Battlestar Galactica until Ronald D. Moore's re-imagined series premiered. My all-time favorite spacecraft fighter is the Viper Mark VII due to its more sleek, futuristic, and predatory design. I LOVE the vast majority of the practical (the bridge should be deep within the vessel not on top) and stylish spacecraft designs introduced in RDM's BSG. Sadly, most BSG based games do not cater to fans who prefer the more contemporary designs that were in use right before the Fall of the Colonies. For example, BSG Deadlock is one of the best and highly rated BSG games to date, and though including the more contemporary designs would not make sense in story mode (the First Cylon War should be kept canon), including these designs in multiplayer would have been a TREMENDOUS fan service. Alas, I am still waiting for a good real-time strategy game that includes the Valkyrie, Pegasus, Viper Mark VII, Stealthstar, Galactica (Blood and Chrome), Osiris, and the Viper Mark III. Maybe one day my wish will finally be answered.

    The reimagined BSG makes me conflicted. It's visually stunning, the soundtrack is often truly haunting, and the acting excellent. But the writing...fuck man. It suffers badly from what I think of as "Lostitus"; the writers not bothering to actually workout even a relatively detailed overview ahead of launch. The end result of this is a series that to me was utterly unsatisfying from a story point of view; and a series ending that left me utterly cold.
    But, and it's a HUGE but. It gave us the Battlestar combat I'd spent my whole life wishing for since my first time seeing the original series in 1982. The Galactica sailing in to danger, kicking all the asses, and saying "Fuck it!" to taking names, or noting down numbers. The Pegasus and Galactica showing fans for the first time just how truly lethal even just two Battlestars could be with experienced hands at the helms. And the Viper Mk2.
    The Mk2 is a great spiritual successor to the original series' Vipers. It's a bit more advanced, but it looks like it wants to tear your face off, while also looking like a "...perfect machine! Born to dance amongst the stars!", and of course then proving that it could dance...
    I honestly don't really like the reimagined series. For it's good points (Katee, Miss Sackoff please marry me?!), it just feels like it lacks...heart. The best comparison I can give is that to me it feels like ST:D; mean, nasty, and unpleasant; the original (and DS9 too) could be all those things, but it felt warming at the same time. The end result being that I'm watching your series so I can look at the ships dance amongst the stars, and try to convince myself that they're in the original setting.
    Fuck I just really aged myself just then, didn't I?

      Its a classic case of a show that ran too long, series one and two were awesome. I never understood the point of making a multi role spaceship/jetplane, they have entirely different roles and conflicting design attributes, I can’t imagine those stumpy little wings doing anything useful in atmospheric flight and they are so far behind the apparent center of mass on the ship it would be unresponsive and turn like a oil tanker. I get the rule of cool for science fiction, I just wish it would follow the rule of common sense as well.

    • @Eleolius
      @Eleolius 6 років тому

      I think one aspect of why "starfighters" in atmosphere is a thing, when their design components get in the way of one another, is one of logistics and the "Higher, faster, farther" mentality. Also, the fact that a fighter with a greater range, and service ceiling will, barring mid air refueling, automatically beat 1 for 1, any fighter that lacks that trait. (Can loiter, and drop down once the enemy fighter is forced to land), and a starfighter has the altitude and climb advantage almost at default... that's a very big advantage to have, mind you, at least in a setting where missiles are fairly lackluster, and guns are the primary means of combat. Star Wars has a similar situation, where TIE and X-Wings are utterly garbage in atmosphere compared to in space, if they come up against a dedicated "atmospheric" fighter. But they're plenty good enough to get by most of the time, and, that planetary fighter, if it follows a TIE or Xwing up into space, is suddenly carrying a ton of mass and control surfaces that don't do a dang thing, and are dead weight. For the Vipers, I think they function in atmosphere similarly to something like the F104... the wings aren't there for lift so much as stability. rocket with fins, really, and to provide some kind of control surface in atmosphere to make up for RCS not working so well. This isn't to say the Viper is a -great- atmospheric fighter... it'd be usable that way in it's setting. And again, if you have orbital gunfire support, or missiles, etc, air superiority in atmosphere is almost guaranteed.

    • @Mostlyharmless1985
      @Mostlyharmless1985 6 років тому

      TheFlyingSquirrel that’s the thing though, the viper uses Reaction Control, which means it uses Newtonian propulsion, it would be far better to have a fighter without the extra mass from useless wings. It also means that it has to carry mass for the actual reaction to happen, meaning in atmospheric flight it is carrying around completely useless weight in a regime where speed is king. As for it exiting the atmosphere When it is in trouble I can only laugh. The puny amount of fuel it can carry is woefully inadequate to get it to orbital speeds. I can give it a pass for using magiconium for fuel in space flight but I put my foot down when it comes to the tyranny of the rocket.
      If you look at modern fighter jets you see they have three sets of control surfaces, usually two in the front ahead of the center of mass, two in the back behind it, and a set dorsal for yaw control. This is so the control surfaces can pivot the jet around the center of mass. The viper with its stumpy wings in the rear would simply reach max Q and break apart like a bundle of twigs when the pilot asserts any control function because all of the force of the control is on those stumpy little wings. This means that it would be fine for long sweeping turns with judicious use of thrust vectoring (whoops, no computer so that level of control isn’t available), but would utterly fail against a fighter that can you know, maneuver.

    I don't really understand your comment that "The tech worked when it worked and didn't work when it didn't." I mean, it's all made up, right? X-wings work when they work, and don't when they don't. Warp engines work when they work and don't when they don't, and they can babble about cascade failure of the hoobajoob up the wazoo, but the bottom line is that the technical stuff is *always* at the service of the script. If they wanted to use the Galactica as a submarine in one episode, they could do it. (Kinda like they did in that Trek movie.) If they wanted the Submarine Seaview to fly through space in one episode, it could do it.
    It's all doubletalk, and all explanations are doubletalk. the best you can hope for is that it's internally consistent.

      Which is the point of the entire channel.. to discuss the piece of work with in its own world and go through it that way and thus why inconsistencies are discussed when they don't internally work.

      Yeah, I get that, I really do. I'm the guy who spent YEARS trying to figure out the deck plans of e Seaview based on what we saw on TV. I don't mean to sound combative or anything. Maybe it was just the way the phrasing struck me while eating breakfast.
