It’s starting to sound like Disappointment BLVD won’t be Beau is Afraid. I hope it is and it’s a red herring but the details kind of don’t sound like it.

the mom lore runs deep with Ari Aster. i realize that most people have a complicated relationship with the people who raised them but it always seems to be at the base of his movies, creating a stimulus.
There are rumors going around that his new film Disappointment Blvd. is basically a three and a half hour long elaboration of this short film, which I'm totally there for.
What do you mean about the ending? The monster thingy? Personally, I loved how Aster tied very real psychological and relationship-related issues with classic occultist motifs in Hereditary, so this was right up my alley lol
Sooo my take on this is his mother is a “monster” but he is unable to see it because He is so emotionally dependent on her. It’s her that takes the keys, manipulating him and causing him to keep being dependent on her; while simultaneously not having to have him visit. There’s many keys on the desk so maybe this is something she does over and over again, adding to his fragile mental state. Reminded me of how a kid never sees a parents flaws and will keep going back to them for help, even when they’re the one causing the problems for the child. OR The creature took his mother and is the one creating all this havoc for Beau. I really don’t understand the thief/knife part at all.
I think you're right about the mother being the monster. I also believe the thief/knife part is just pure paranoia from BEAU'S pov or maybe just his literal fear of someone breaking into his home. It could be his fear of the outside world/people misunderstanding him, since every other person other than BEAU and his mom are very aggressive towards him.
Maybe its a race thing. Maybe nobody cares about his problems because hes black. And even tho somebody broke into his house, he still got arrested for defending himself.
In the leaked 2014 script of Beau Is Afraid, his character purposefully is meant to have a sharp grin on his face as he walks away. Everything Ari fits on screen is intentional!
that was one of the weirdest things i've ever watched. I honestly think it's just meant to make you feel like a person with mental illness feels. There's no explanation for events, you just have to experience them, and it doesn't stop. That's what mental illness can feel like.
6:05 I love how Ari puts these little still life’s that add character development in his stuff. He did a similar thing with Charlie’s desk in hereditary.
Amazing clip, definitely remind me of "casa tomada" (taken house), a short story by Julio Cortázar. It clearly has the same claustrophobic feeling to it.

a perfect representation of paranoia and anxiety. i like the amount of vagueness. personally i think that this character has some sort of mental illness that causes him to have these hallucinations that make him paranoid. either that or he went through some serious trauma because he perceives everything as bad or negative, like the couple screaming in the hallway when they were really laughing. this feels like a fever dream. also what the fuck was the ending.
