Thank you for sharing this. After making two of the most beautiful horror films I've ever seen (Hereditary and Midsommar) I'm watching all of Ari Aster's short films. It's interesting to see the genesis and growth of his creative process.
@@Lucasvieirinha Same for me :D My girlfriend doesn't let me see Midsommar without her, and I need to do this. Anyway, Ari Aster is a monster dude! Outstanding, i love this guy's works.
I can't be the only one who got major George Carlin vibes from that lead actor?! Ari Aster is such a talent, what an ear for dialogue. And I love the line near the end about Freud's definition of horror. Ari certainly used that to great effect for Hereditary :-)
I found it unique and cool. In this whole trip I felt like there was a change. It started as Nick Nolte, went into George Carlin, and then Bill Burr to die off as Nicholas Cage...Still I think it was unique in it's own way. I was shivering at the end to think this still can be any of us as men. Disposable throaway beings at the service of this huge machine. Stop being productive and of use for the machine and meet this guy in his own enviroment, sobering and sad to see it this way.
Aster’s films are amazing looking. Technical-wise, I think he’s right at the top of best directors. As for story telling, I feel he’s often very derivative and trying to re-do things that were already done very well by previous filmmakers.
@@gracenauly It's frightening. We have seen that the man is capable of violence. When he say's "That's my daughter" we dread what is going to happen next.
I don't know how much sense this makes but I noticed all of Ari Asters work has common themes: -Messed up families -heads coming off -the colour yellow He also likes to put a lot of emphasis on doorways/entranceways by putting them centre frame.
I feel like this was more of a dark reality than a dark comedy, but was shot in a "comedic way" if that makes sense. This is real and it happens right in front of us, and most people don't know or realize it unless they know someone who's been through it or dealt with it. The actor is trying to point it out at one point, how we all look at the ground all day as life passes by. I feel like the point of filming it this way was *in fact* to "fly over people's head", like reality does. That's what I took from this anyway.
Nobody seems to have said it: the German word "unheimlich", mentioned in the end is somewhat well translated with un-home-like if you go syllable by syllable. However, the word actually translates to eerie/ominous.
this is really well made satire. as someone who has struggled with being homeless on and off for 3 years, i found it truly funny. this is capitalism right here. didnt think the ending was necessary tho... that was a weird curveball
It probably wasn't really his daughter. He's an unreliable narrator. What should hit hard is that it could have been his daughter if not for the misfortune and lack of compassion from our society. He's discussing his huge, colorful dreams and then trails off. And then he says that. The idea that something so possible is a huge, colorful dream (or at least hinted to be via juxtaposition) is very sad.
i'm soooo Stupid, i watched this Short without knowing that it was made by Ari and i was like : "Wow, this really reminds me of Beau is Afraid, even the way it's shot, plus the Actor kinda sounds like Joaquin Phoenix especially at 5:28, whoever directed this needs to make some ari aster type movies, cause they're great at it." 😐
Waiting for "Beau is afraid" like almost everyone else ... If it could only look a bit like this one, with Joaquin vomiting his guts like this sweet bum...
@@elgozk ... with this short one ?... I didn't see the movie yet... but critics annoy me... Whatever, I needn't them to have my own opinion... Let's wait ...

I really wish this character wasn't like actually a murderer. I've noticed a lot of ari aster movies walk the line between demonizing mental illness and just portraying it in honest ugliness but this is definitely just demonizing. everything else about this character is incredibly realistic. schizophrenic people make up 10‰ of the homeless population but mentally ill people of any kind are FAR more likely to be the victim of violence than to perpetrate it.
His work has a black comedy element to it. We don't dwell on the handyman or the man he shoots, they're beats, pauses or illustrate different elements of the monologue. If he intended this to be a verbatim portrayal, then yes it would be vulgar (it is, but that is where the comedy, tragedy and horror intersect with the sensitivity and nuance) We make choices of inclusion and exclusion, what you relinquish to make your story work.

I can't agree more when you say about hereditary, unfortunately I didn't watch Midsommar yet, but I'm anxious to.

@@gonzaloortegasanchez4726 obviously talented Ari
I hope Ari Aster would make a Dark Horror Comedy soon
Ari is the master of dark comedy. This is sooo hilarious and low key kinda true while being absurd. I love it.

- "His whole body caught fire"
- "I was sleeping in my treehouse that night which was right outside their window."
Hmmm, interesting.
They also have the same "familiar condition". So maybe it really is most likely a reference.

Cracked Chaos its sad because his daughter doesn’t even recognize him
@@kcazertgaming that's not his daughter though. The adult she is with wouldve recognized him. He clearly is disconnected from reality.

This one and Basically are really good and interesting. Ari could make a movie with the same work. Maybe a compilation of short stories like these
Ari Aster´s Pulp Fiction. Man thats sounds like a movie that I would pay for
He actually intended on making 12 of these monologue-type shorts but I guess he found success with Hereditary before completing it.
I love you ari
So many people in the comments section seem to have not paid attention in the video.
Nice Death Grips song
What's the name of the song please ?
