I could see using this method with some oranges and reds to create Lava pools instead of acid.. Great tutorial, and inspiration!
I want to do something with lava myself.
Been using acetone a lot lately for my desert terrain. Awesome stuff. DONT dump the excess down the sink; pour it outside or something. Melts PVC
Unless you are in a commercial building your plumbing wont be PVC, at least not here. Current residential is actually ABS, which acetone can still melt. That being said a small amount heavily diluted wouldn't case much damage....THAT being said you still shouldn't pour it down the drain because thats just a really crappy thing to do. I just leave the cup outside for a day and it evaporates.
Dear Gods NO! If you don't need it, cap it tightly. Store it. If you decide you'll never need it, bring it in on HazMat day for your local waste management facility. Acetone is useful stuff, and while it might not be dangerous as say strong nitric or sulferic acid or even gas, it is toxic enough that it demands the same degree of respect. Don't dump it anywhere. If you have absolutely no other choice, just pour it in a ceramic or glass container you don't like and let it evaporate.
If you want to discard small amounts, put them in a glass Bowl and then Store it at a Safe place (out of reach from children, animals and pets) outside and let it evaporate. Everything more than maybe 20mL should be discarded by HazMat services.
I really like the way the tiles look before the acid resin is added... like a really distressed, crumbling floor.
yea going to make a few more without the resin, I really like the way they looked
I was thinking that, too. A kind of Gothic ruin type look.
I also found for a school project a long time ago, you could also put some acetone in to a spray bottle (preferable with a glass bottle and not caring for most the plastic parts) you can spray it over foam and make a spotted marked up battle area.
That is an awesome idea that I am totally going to try.
Be careful, you spray to close and you won't get a good look. You will get spots like in your video.
If you blow on the resin with a blow dryer, heat gun, or even a straw(breath) you can pop those bubbles before the resin fully cures.
I've found that the epoxy from Dollarama yellows quite a bit, especially when mixing in a cup. Maybe that yellowing effect + the green is what made that "really bad cold" snot colour. Looks awesome for acid. Or booger pits.
As a visual thinker, thanks for that last image.
I love it. I opted to use the natural “eaten away” look without adding the resin, and added various degrees of green to black, with glow-in-the-dark on the edges for a “ALIENS” style. Live the work though.
Epoxy can also be thinned with denatured alcohol. It works very well and should not damage the foam.
Excellent safety brief, good reminder about checking your cup before putting acetone in it. Early in my experiences with solvents, I used a red Solo cup without thinking.
I ended up with a red Solo blob.
Years ago I also learned the hard way with a red solo cup.
It all depends on the solvent. Acetone shouldn't melt a solo cup (never has for me).
I started using a red solo cup years ago. Some people say I should have learned my lesson by now, but I just can't bring myself to put it down.
Acetone is also used in a LOT of nail polish remover products
instead of using resin i use clear elmer's glue mixed with food coloring. it might take a little bit to dry, but still looks good. Just a cheap alternative to resin if you have the time for it to dry.. generally takes 24 hours without a drying station.. the thicker you put it on the long it takes to dry of course :) hope this little tip helps for those that dont wanna risk resin... oh btw Anybody that uses Resin.. DO NOT rinse your measuring/pouring cups out in the sink or you will get a nasty hardened resin in your sink :P which might upset your girlfriend/wife >:D
Yea, I don't want to wait...thats why I like the 5 minute stuff....as for the left over resin, just let it harden in the cup
I washed mine out in the sink lol :D
Nice job. Good idea with the fast curing epoxy even though the bubbles were a bonus.
I love the stuff
Great vid man....I appreciate the humor in your intro too. Thanks for sharing the latest methods using cheap epoxy + paint and the acetone. I like the relative speed from start to finish for this build, and the nice results.
Thanks :)
After watching, I made these on cheap foam board as a prototype. Instead of the epoxy for the pools, I used modge podge/pva + glow in the dark acrylic paint + neon green acrylic paint. The modge podge took forever to dry, but I love how it turned out. The pools glow in the dark and they look awesome under a blacklight! Thanks for the video!
*For still water* when you're done pouring and spreading the resin use a hand torch to quickly flame the surface of the resin to remove the air bubbles
I love the fact that you use stuff I can actually get my hands on. From stores I know here in Canuckville. I love it! And it's cheap! I can actually make a water effect and I already have 90% of what I need to do it!
Thanks, your channel has re-ignited that terrain itch again...
I gotta represent us northerners....everything is always tailored to americans that can buy everything cheap on amazon.
Hey, I'm about to craft a bunch of sewer tiles and I'd like to this technique for the water. Have you found a reliable way to make this go down the middle of a tile and keeping straight edges?
So, you are making acid damaged dungeon tiles by damaging dungeon tiles with acid?
Sorry to be "that guy", but acetone isn't an acid. Its neutral.
@@traceswann7054 It's not actually neutral, it is just a very weak acid - even weaker than water (which is neutral).
@@GamerVidsExtreme To my knowledge, acetone is not an acid.
@@JR-xv6mv What acetone is seems to depend on who you ask; at least googling the question will get you explanations for it being an acid, a base, neutral, or even "it varies".
BainesMkII Okay, it might have those characteristics to some extent, but it’s a ketone commonly used as a solvent. It’s not an acid in the common sense.
Dang! Those are sweet, I can't wait for what you come up with next.
I thought they were pretty cool
Congrats on hitting 10K, BMC! Love your vids!
Thanks :)
honestly even without acid filling it looks great as damaged tiles!
I loved the battle scarred look before adding the resin! Have you made oozes with resin? Please try to make lava or black oil. Crazy idea while the resin is partly set turn the piece upside down allowing for a drip or bulge. Might make for an interesting effect.
Yea, I'm planning on making a few more without resin.....and the upside down idea is definitely worth a try!
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial ooze minis with resin pls?
The double plunger on the 5 min epoxi can sometimes cause unequal amounts of the 2 parts to come out, especially when you want very small amounts. @lostwax uses a jewler's saw to separate them and get more control. Also, he's a fellow canadian and his intros make me happy ♡
🇨🇦🍻
Something about your intro reminds me of "Old Greg" from The Mighty Boosh
thats ok, old greg is awesome
I don't know if you've already figured this out, but a lot of people who use casting resin use some sort of heat source to blow over the resin and that brings all the bubbles to the surface to pop and gives a nice glass and bubble free look. I've seen heat guns but more commonly, they use a blow torch about 6 inches to a foot away.
Yeh, nah.. a blow torch is going to completely f*ck up your foam terrain. But I like your idea if i ever decide to throw a piece away because I messed up.. toast it with a flame thrower first!
@@epicnamefail4578 I dont mean people using casting resin on foam, I'm actually referring to people using it with wood and other stuff. I dont know how foam would react. Lol that's why I threw the idea out there. Lol
You're right, I work with a lot of foam for terrain and stuff, it does not like heat, nor does it like a lot of chemicals.
I notice a Hobgoblin bottle on the shelf behind you. Good stuff.
I've been using acetone for melting plastic for a while. Cool to see that you are using it as well!
its a great tool
To test for variance in color you could mix a little of the resin and paint and let it dry before applying to the tile. I think this could help.
I'm not sure if it helps for future resin painting, but in the past if I needed to add color I used the ink from pens or sharpies. It tends to make it easy to make the color concentration easy to control. This way does make a really cool deep color though. Really cool tiles btw!!
I've been planning on buying some actual inks for this very purpose.
You can also use UV resin, as it hardens until you light them with a uv lamp or put on direct sun light.
Thanks for the tutorial, I had no idea that acetone did that to foam :)
Hey guys. Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this. I realise the paints for coloring the resin are cheaper and more accessible and that is the point. However, you could use alcahol inks if you needed a truer colour. They're designed to go into resins and colour them and should work with the two part epoxy. Though I have not tested this myself. I know some 5 min epoxies are not clear and cure a milky yellow colour. These mat work on their own for a sickly yellow acid colour. Hope that helps if anyone is experimenting and trying to ensure colours don't change on their projects. Alcohol inks can be got at any resin suppliers. Here in SA AMT is a good option.
Dunno if anyone has made mention of this, but I think the equivalent of the epoxy you use as the acid (though not quite the same value) is J-B Weld Clear Epoxy. A tube tends to run around 5 dollars but it's cheaper and more accessible than resin kits
I love video my friend, it's always great to watch your stuff. You really help make terrain awesome and easy to build
Thanks :)
Great video. I have been building on overtime for my game table thanks to you.
nice!
Great tip about spraying the sealer *after* your resin/water effect; I learned that lesson the hard way myself, hit panic mode when I saw the results and wound up having to use more resin over top to get that glossy sheen back. I'm guessing there's something in that particular green pigment that reacted weird with the epoxy, which is what turned it that sort of sick yellow-green-brown, which as you said works well for something like acid.
An alternative to the acetone, if you're worried about it, is super glue. This is something else I found out the hard way with my initial forays into terrain building and I've never done it purposefully but cyanoacrylate (super glue) will melt pretty much any kind of styrene foam pretty aggressively. I would say the only potential downside would be that if you use thicker super glue you might run into the same problem that you did with the nail polish; i.e. it may cure and form into a hardened layer, meaning you'll only get a single pass. Thin super glue may yield better results.
using super glue seems like a really expensive way to do it as its about 1000x the price of acetone...maybe for little stuff if thats all you have on hand
Great stuff. I can't find the water effects kit from Walmart in my area, so I will definitely look into 5 min epoxy. It really gives it a cool effect and the possibilities are endless.
Yea, I wouldn't bother with that stuff anymore anyway. For small effects like this this cheap epoxy is a way better choice, fast fast fast to cure and cheap. For big effects I'd look into envirotex lite.
would say it is perfect for lava/molten rock pools aswell since it created bubbles like that
totally
Acetone doesn't melt polypropylene (I work with that and polyethylene for a living, and we sometimes have to use acetone to clean our products), but it does melt polystyrene. Wax-coated paper cups are a good idea to use, but plastic cups (like solo cups) work just as well.
Another amazing video! Thanks man :) I was looking for a cheap resin alternative and I think you found it!
It's my new favourite thing!
I do a fair amount of epoxy work and I'm wondering if you tested the one you used on unfinished foam first? I think the amount of bubbles you got were as a result of it reacting to the foam (even with the mod podge finished surface. A polyester resin from Michaels would not react like that and allow a longer pot life before starting to gel.
A Short addition to translation / working in other Countrys:
In Europe, such 5-Min-Epo ist, for example "Uhu Endfest 300". It commes in 2 Tubes with a mixing-pad.
Perfect for a Black Dragon lair
Black Magic Craft sounds like a beer I would drink.
It turned into that burnt yellow color because the heat from the curing epoxy burned the green pigment in the paint. So knowing that, make sure the color paint you use is lighter in shade than what you want the final product to be.
Ive been doing some stuff like this recently and since aceton is either only available in larger quantities or for high prices for me most of the time (~10€) Ive been trying to find alternatives. I found the powerglue I can get in my local $ store equivalent does the trick just the same and is cheaper. It also does not create the skinlike layer after melting the foam
Have you tried using food coloring instead of paint to colour your water effects? It might be more translucent than the paint in case you want something more clear.
The trick is to use very little paint...
How little is very little?...
Those turned out great!
I thought so
cool vid as always. I like this idea and will be using it in one of my future builds. Thanks for this helpful idea.
no problemo
Really good idea. Thx for the input.
I want to make a couple of these with a carved out giant's or creature footprints. That should scare a few characters.
Yet another awesome video. Great stuff!
Thank you :)
Another great video! Keep up the great tutorials. What, if anything do you use for walls in your dungeons? I just bought my first sheet of 1/2" thick insulation foam last weekend and am excited to try building some of the things on your channel.
I am absolutely against using walls in my dungeons! I feel they just get in the way and are totally unnecessary.
What do you use for doors? Or do you use doors in your dungeons? Love everything you have built and shared with us so far.
I use doors....a few kinds, one I did a video on (castle doors)...but have other ones. Go check out the BMC facebook page for pics
My face is MELTING!!!!
noooo, it's so pretty, it looks like wyloch's face.
The weird plasticky skin is cross linked polystyrene. Basically the acetone kind of takes the polystyrene chains and hooks them together side by side like chainmail and it turns solid. Or something.
I have no way of knowing if you know what you are talking about or just making shit up....but sounds good to me!
Not intentionally but I might have my facts wrong. That's what I heard. Either way it's fun to watch acetone eat things up....as long as it isn't your terrain.
what are the potential chemical reactions to watch out for with something like this? fumes being released that are maybe combustible or whatever. thinking just to things i've read about certain urethanes etc being reative to certain conditions and whatever.
If the acid burns to the edge of the tile & you don’t want the resin to flow over the edge than use scotch tape to seal the gape. The resin should not adhere to the sticky part of the tape.
Great video as always, would it be possible to try out some different styles for the modular floor tiles such as wooden floorboards or sheet metal? having these options would be great for indoor or more modern scifi environments
Yea, I should really make some wood ones....will do a video on that soon. I don't have much use for sci fi stuff, BUUUUT can think of pretty easy ways to do them so I may do them just for the sake of the channel.
Man that's awesome, keep up the good work!
I don't play D&D. Let me make myself clear. I have never played any games, to be honest - I could never see the point. I did use to buy various figures, though, as I enjoyed painting them and making dioramas with them; alas, my eyesight isn't good enough to do that now. I WILL be making some of these tiles, though. I have some Alien 'Xenomorph' figures that will look great on them. I love your channel, as I enjoy watching really creative people making really cool stuff. Keep up the good work! Nice one.
Have you tried mixing glow in the dark paint with the resin? It would look cool under blacklight.
try dye power instead of paint for the resin kits. I tryed some with the 5 min expoy and it was brilliant. Its a powder so has no other additives to effect the resin.
0:00 As a Texan, I find that accent amazing
Could you use luminescent paint in the mix?
Would using a syringe to insert the resin work? That way I have more control over the thickness of the resin? Just wondering.... love your channel!! ❤️🐉
You'd have to act really fast, and use a disposable syringe. And you might struggle depending on the syringe because of the thickness of the epoxy. But in theory, the answer is yes.
Sweet!! Can’t wait to make something this awesome!!
great idea for other projects
These look great! I'm still in the process of making some basic tiles. Would you recommend using Modpodge and black paint for the initial coat now rather than just the paint on its own? Also I can't get the Minwax spray here in the UK. Can I use watered down PVA or Modpodge as a sealer instead? Wanna get your thought before I risk it on one of my painted tiles.
If I wasnt doing mod podge and black paint combo yet in my basic tile video (cant remember) then I'd say yes, do it, I do everything like that now. If you can't get the minwax dont replace with pva....maybe mod podge, but I'd probably skip that step then as glue coatings could end up way too thick and killing the look. You could also look for other brands of aerosol polyurethane that are water based.
Black Magic Craft do you thin out the mod podge when adding paint and using as a base?
Nope, just add black paint right into the mod podge container.
Hey man, really love your videos. Appreciate you as a contractor (being an architect). I'm watching your video after a shift and while I gotta say those tiles turned out bitchin' (and I'm super looking forward to making my own), I do have two semi-non-relevant questions for you. What are all those bottles on top of your shelves at the start/end of your video? And are those BILLY shelves from IKEA? Cuz I have the exact same ones.
for the bottles check out wychwood breweries. Hobgoblin was my fave, but they are all good beers. And the labels are awesome.
yea, those are BILLY shelves, cheap and decent option for terrain storage....and the bottles are beer, just a collection of beer I've had that I like the art.
I've had good luck with using Acrylic Inks instead of paint for the coloring, seems to be even more translucent.
I confirm the melting with Miniwax problem. This is exactly the problem I had, it was melting because I was spraying from too close.
Did you end up having good results once you sprayed from further away?
Yes! Once I sprayed from further away it did its job as "advertised" by yours truly 😇
I used paint remover to create the holes. Effect looks similar but my God the fumes stinks. Make sure you do it outside or in a well ventilated room. :)
Love yer vids! Any chance you could make this style with lava?
The byproduct of mixing acetone and foam is a type of home made..... Well you can google it and let them tell you but needless to say it's not good to have near an open flame especially the gel like stuff with the melted foam in it... Let the acetone evaporate completely and then recyle it.
In case someone else did not mention it. please wear a respirator if your melting polystyrene or other plastics. Even if your outside, it's just good policy to protect yourself.
sure.....it's a bit overkill if outside, but it doesn't hurt.
Black Magic Craft the issue tends to be how close you are to the foam when melting it. Without a good breeze the vapor will still float in your vicinity as it disperses. If you dont have a decent breeze (or handy box fan) than a spray booth or respirator is highly recommended.
Love your videos so far!
Oooh this is so cool!
If you have a problem with dissolving/ melting the side of the dungeon tile you can just stick some card against it for until it sets
I'd be concerned the epoxy would just bond to any damn you make. I'm sure there is something it wouldn't stick to if you had to do it.
true
That would make great potholes on a diorama.
Think these will work great for my alien diorama.
Could double sided them, one side acid and plain dungeon tile
This reminds me of Walter White telling Jessy to buy a big container of polyethilene, for getting ridd of Loco 8 (or the other guy?). Polystyrene (PS) and ABS would melt (or become some mucus), but polyethylene PE, polypropylene PP (most of your food containers [sort of tupperware] are PP), polyamide PA and PTFE, will resist it, at least fos several days. I don't know what happens with polyurethane
Yup shirt is sweet!
I´m just gonna start. Where should I start? What should my first build be?
Chrille Ou I did some modular dungeon tiles, and then his brick pillars. that worked well!
Basic dungeon tiles, episode 11.....and watch all the BASICS videos
Why is there always exactly one dislike when I watch your videos? Did you anger an old gypsy woman or something?
nah, there is just one guy that aparantly doesn't like me but for some reason stays subscribed just so he can dislike each video as soon as it comes out.....after a time, and lots of organic views, a handful of dislikes is normal......but there is always ONE right at the start. This guy's hobby is weirder than mine.
plastickhero probably the same guy on DM Scotty's feed.
It's the dislike fairy. It is subbed to a few channels and helps us with our ad revenue by watching the videos :) It lives in a cave in california (I could be more specific, but it may spook it)
He hits all of us.
Maybe it's Bizarro and he's actually a fan.
I Would add some Details. Use an Airbrush spray a hole outer in a light green and then inerhole darker then add the wartererffect wil ladd a 3d effect
I need that shirt as well.
It was a campaign on teechimp, so don't think you can order it anymore, maybe on redbubble.
I tried this and my epoxy turned to rubber before I had time to pour it all. I am sure I didn't wait to long. I used in weld clear and folk art glow in the dark green acrylic paint. it foamed and hardened in like 2 minutes
How do you think green candle wax with mod podge coating.
wax doesn't harden in the same way that something like this would. It _works,_ but just not nearly as well.
Crazy what mod podge can do
this gives me some ideas for a mortal kombat unit for dnd...
Looks like pools of dry contact cement. Wonder if I could just do that
Is there any reason why you went with the epoxy instead of the floral resin that you used in the water feature episode??
Stopped using that stuff after a failed cure. Years ago. Plus why wait 24 hours when you can wait 5 min.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Thanks!!!
You rock, keep it up!
thanks again for the tip on the shirt
Awesome!
Can you use Minwax paint instead of the aerosol
Why not use a nail polish remover with acetone? It's less aggressive and dangerous which means you have more control and aren't as likely to melt your face off.
outstanding!!
thanks :)
You should use acrylic or regular ink instead of paint it will maintain more translucence.
I keep meaning to get some actual inks for this purpose, but always forget when I'm at the craft store
just gonna say, not all 5min epoxy resins get hot as they cure. i live in britain the stuff i use, from poundland, doesn't create heat as it dries. also the stuff i use doesn't bubble :-)
Have you mixed it with paint? this stuff doesn't bubble as much either when there are no "contaminants".....but no heat seems strange, I've worked with dozens of different resins with my job and the chemical reaction always causes some heat.
hmm. not tried mixing it with paint (u could try asking Luke at Lukes Aps as i use the same stuff as him). there's no heat tho, or so little that i didn't noticed. :-| ? interesting.
Do you think that stuff would work good or look good for lava tiles?
Totally would, as long as you were going for very hot liquid magma, that hasn't started to crust over yet.
Yeah this immediately made me think of doing lava as well! Awesome video as always!
Since you mentioned that it dulled the shine, do you think using the poly spray after pouring the epoxy would help give magma more of a crusty look, or would it still not be quite right?
As for making actual chunks of crust across the surface for lava, what would you think of carving them out as little islands inside the pool and using the acetone to excavate some extra foam out from underneath so they really look like they're floating? Too much effort?
Alternatively, how about cutting flat crust shapes out of foam, painting them appropriately, and embedding them into the epoxy as it's drying?
If the resin bubbles, is there any way to get of it for a smoother (and bubble-less) water effect? Thanks!
To be sure you are better of using an actual resin for water, something like envirotex lite.
Hi, thanks so much for your reply. I looked up the price, and it's a little out of my budget at the moment. Would epoxy resin still work for water (despite perhaps bubbling, etc)?
Fantastic!
thanks :)
Hmm could do Lava damaged tiles the same way..... for a volcano dungeon......
How strong are the dungeon tiles? mine broke or warped (had cardboard). are those brittle/fragile?
And this is why I don't craft anything with cardboard, especially tiles. I could drop these off a 10 story building and they would probably be fine, maybe dent depending on how they landed. 1/2" xps doesnt really warp. Cardboard makes terrible tiles.
Black Magic Craft Have you ever expiremented with hardening your foam beyond what Mod Podge and Minwax will do?
so cool
thanks :)
