The five sonatas have a key position in Beethoven's music and in music in general. Op 5 1&2 are both one of the highlights of the so-called "first manner" of Beethoven at its beginning and the first cello/piano sonatas in the music story that can be told to be true masterpieces consecrating the dépendance of cello as a quite autonomous tenor voice Op 69 is, both with Brahms' first sonata, a masterpiece in the classical form. Note that in both sonatas, there is actually no slow movement: rejection of the too easy cello lyricism? Later on, Debussy will write a three movement sonata with a similar rejection and a quite capricious second movement. The two sonatas op. 102 consolidate the so-called "third manner", just after that op; 101 did the same for piano solo music. The variations are splendid and inventive. They have no op. number, and it is a pity since they are much better tan some pieces with op. Number under editor's pressure.(think for instance of op. 49) The rendering by these almost unknown musicians is excellent, very strong and deep in expression and very clear at the same time.
hey Brillaint Classics, THat commercial interruption between the first two movements of the op5 #1 was totally uncalled for. Can't you at least wait until the conclusion of one sonata?Commercial advertising is singularly detestable.

In the role of a melodic instrument, cello's sound is specially beautiful, with a melancholic elegance. Thanks for sharing.

Das klingt so sinnlich, ich höre es zu gern. Beethoven ,aber ja danke.
sounds like fortepiano
me suena un poco rápido, creo que Rostropovich - Richter es la mejor combinación
@MrMaxmorphing Sorry I don't Know Bylsma, can You sent me the link, please
Too metallic for my ears - I know that it is a fortepiano but ...
Too calm
