Four months after this game, I went to the Boston Celtics (NBA) vs. Virginia Squires (ABA) exhibition game on 09/27/1972. The Celtics won 127-111. I was seated behind one of the baskets. Dave Cowens of the Celtics and Jim Eakins of the Squires got tangled up on a play that went into the seats about eight feet from me. As they scuffled, I yelled "Cut it out guys". Blessed that they didn't turn around and pummel this little kid.
I was at this game, my mom took me for my 14th birthday. All my bball heroes in one place. I do remember Chamberlain letting Gilmore know he was out of his depth. But Dr J in full flight . . . nothing like it before or since (sorry MJ). So nice to see this again!

The NBA held on to win this game, as Rick Barry’s half court shot at the buzzer didn’t go down. Still, as an ABA fan back then, I was happy with how competitive it was. This was the first of literally dozens of games I saw at the Coliseum, including two ABA championships for the Nets, and later, two of the four straight Stanley Cup clinchers by the Islanders.
Notice this game was played on 5-25-72. The NBA and ABA playoffs had been over already for 2 weeks. Today, they are just about starting the playoffs in early May, and they don’t end until mid to late June. Basketball is a sport for winter, and they are still playing into summer.
The difference is in 1971 there were 17 teams with 8 teams in 3 rounds of playoffs. Today it's 30 teams and 16 teams in 4 rounds of playoffs. The season does start 10 days later than in 1970.
The only game Julius Erving, Artis Gilmore and Dan Issel played against Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson. Havlicek lasted long enough to play them when they came over to the NBA.
I was trying to place the senator they interviewed at halftime. That was Sam Ervin, who would really become famous about a year later, when he chaired the Watergate hearings.
I was too. It was right at the time that the Coliseum was still being built. They didn’t finish in time for this game, so there were a couple of thousand posts that later became seats.
Dr. J will always be the greatest in my book. We disrespect all these grear players and act as if they did nothing, when they set the stage for Magic, Bird and Jordan. What's unique aboyt this game is that the three greatest "above the ground leapers" Elgin Baylor, Julius Erving and Connie Hawkins, were all in the building, and we witnessd Erving going up against his predecessor, The Hawk; this a true classic!!!
I saw this game on tv. At one point Dr. J on the break flew from the foul line, ball straight up high above his head and dunked it. FROM THE FOUL LINE! I gasped aloud and nearly fell out of my chair. One of the greatest shots ever. My friends and I talked about it in school the next day. I’ve been dying to see it since. In this video, during the 2nd Q of this game, the technical difficulties card came up, and you can hear the crowd react to an Erving fast break basket. The tv announcer said “That’s Dr. J on the fly.” Wait! WAS THAT THE SHOT? But how? I SAW it. Was it the 4th qtr? Maybe. But that’s not available. How frustrating. I guess I’ll never see it again. Damn.
All points are correct. It probably was the greatest dunk of all time and yes, it was in the fourth quarter and it was over Archie Clark, who was a superstar with the bullets at the time. They showed it on replay.ONE TIME.. and we never saw it again. It is one of the loss moments in sports history. It was incredible and you’ve never seen anything like it sense unless you were at a dunk contest or something. It’s a damn shame. Everyone lost their minds.
First thing I thought of when this popped up in my feed. Is this the game where Dr. J took off from the foul line and dunked? A shame it's not on this video.
I remember the play being late in the game. Dr J came in from the right side of the lane and took off around a foot inside the line with Wilt waiting under the basket. We thought there was no way he was dunking from that far out, especially over Wilt. I think he surprised Wilt, too. By the time he realized what was happening, he decided not to contest the shot. Everyone went crazy. We couldn't believe what we saw. That play nearly catapulted them to victory. Dr Js block of an Archie Clark jumpshot in the first half was pretty spectacular, too. Criqui then mentioned asking Dr J if he could touch the top of the backboard, and Erving replied, "Put a $20 up there, and we'll find out!"
This "Sorry, We're Having Trouble!" sign keeps popping up. Is this broadcast going out on the TV equivalent of a party line? If you know what I mean, welcome to your Golden Years (mine, too).
Wish I could hear or see who some of the lesser known all stars were. Sound is muffled and some moron, put their watermark on the video covering up some of the information.
