I've only been to two pro games in my life and this was one of them. It's a just bizarre coincidence I happened across this video. My buddy and I took the train in from the Mainline. I had just turned 21 so we brought a couple pints of whiskey (to keep warm, of course). All I really remember about the game was everybody booing Cossell when he walked to the broadcast booth. On the way home, we harassed Giants fans at the train platform and my buddy puked his guts out. Oh, the good old days.
I was at the game against the Falcons the week before 11/15/70. The game ended in a 13-13 tie due to the Eagles kicker Mark Moseley missing a 29 yard field goal. I was 7 years old, but still vividly remember it. This was my first Eagles game. Was with my Dad and his business partner. Great memory! Love those Eagles white helmets with green wings and white pants. Bring them back please!!! Those were the best uniforms ever!!!
17:19 Boy, Moseley shanked the heck out of it from the 39 yd line. Kicking style and skill has improved immensely over the decades. It’s so weird to see a professional player miss a field goal so horribly 😂
A wonderful step back in time - even the commercials. And the players. I now remember almost all of them. Two ex-Atlanta Falcons on the giants' defense; defensive tackle, Jerry Shay (75) who would later shatter his leg and linebacker, Ralph Heck (55). And there's Tim Rossovich, Bill Bradley, Ron Johnson (Giant halfback, later with the Browns.) Maybe the uniforms are Spartan by today's standards, but they were very down to earth. And the bad ass facemasks the players wore in those days. This was a very hard-hitting, rugged game, and at old Franklin Field, at that. Thanks! These are priceless.
Majik Man, Thanks so much for posting this game. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Isn't it something to think there were no injury time-outs or pass-interference penalties in this game? The place-kicking was so shaky, a successful extra-point was cause for celebration. The Giants all-out pass-rush (forget about maintaining gap integrity or protecting the LB's behind you; just pin your ears back and get to the passer), especially Fred Dryer's effectiveness, prevented Snead from taking a full-drop, setting up, reading the Safeties, and making a downfield throw, so the Eagles depended upon draws and short passes to RB's. The Giants needed more than one WR to throw to at the second and third-levels (even their lone target, Clifton McNeil, did not play particularly well). Philadelphia pretty much took RB Ron Johnson out of the game, but New York did a good job of utilizing Tucker Frederickson out of the backfield. Still, the Giants should have devised a game-plan that made better use of Tarkenton's mobility, elusiveness, and ability to throw on the run. But it was a hard-fought, physical contest, with plenty of excitement. Please post some more! Thanks!

I was 1 year old in 70 I love watching the older games I watched in 70s with Cosell , meredith, and pat summerall and Gifford, I always liked Gifford telling of the game and cosell RIP
In memory of the broadcaster Keith Jackson; I still can't believe Dick Enberg is gone too. No comment on whom I'm picking to win this year's Super Bowl!
Keith Jackson and Dick Enberg were two of the best ever. I liked Frank Gifford but he was not an improvement on Keith Jackson. Jackson was especially great doing college football.
Chuck Noll, coach of the Steelers, used to light up too but only when the game was well in hand. You knew the Steelers had the hay in the barn if the camera cut to Noll puffing on a cigarette.
Norm Van Brocklin puffed away on the sidelines much more than Webster, Noll or anyone else. Little shock he died of lung cancer at 57. Lombardi smoked incessantly until quitting during the 1963 season, and Phil Bengston did until he resigned at the end of the 1970 season. John Madden was also caught with a butt more than a few times.
Interesting to watch & compare changes in the game and the commercials, esp. if you’re an old timer who was a lad back in 1970-differences I. Rules (offensive holding 15 yards, missed FG spotted at the 20, cigarette commercials...) If Howard’s drunk, it isn’t apparent halfway thru the first quarter.
The telecast was so plan and simple. No distracting line of scrimmage and first down markers, no arrow pointing with the down and yards to go showing in it, etc.
Note the lack of theatrics by players after making the most routine of plays, unlike players over the past 20 + years. And the Redskins still got the better deal in the Snead-for-Jurgensen trade.
players , actually a few singing the anthem ......... most players ....standing with respect ........GOD , DO I MISS THESE DAYS ! THANK U MAGIC MAN ........ FRANKLIN FIELD ..... WHAT A COOL VENUE !
Leonard Tose (Eagles owner) gave Cosell a flask during the game. Howard got sick drinking the booze and hurled on Don-a-roo's cowboy boots. Left the booth and did not return.
Yes, and according to the book, "Monday Night Mayhem," Cosell denied he was drunk, but got sick because he did the game "under inhuman conditions" (it was very cold that night and the TV booth was open, no windows), and he was suffering from an inner ear infection caused by a "virulent virus"!!
This is right around the time I started watching football. Growing up in Connecticut, I could have picked the Giants or Patriots. But since the Pats only had nine winning seasons from 60-89, the Giants were the only choice. Loved Tarkenton, the master scrambler. Let's not forget that this is the first year of Monday Night Football. Brand spanking new. And how 'bout them commercials? Back when high school bands did the anthem. And let's not forget the HOF announcers. Great stuff.
Try 18 seasons for the Patriots with a non-losing record during that span. Better than your Giants during that period. I've been a Patriots fan since 1976 and they've never a had a huge gap in being competitive since their inception. Never had a long playoffs drought like the Buccaneers,Jets,Bengals or GIANTS have either. So yes, here in Connecticut you could have and should have gone with the Pats.
Yep, so many NFL uniforms just look silly today. Also, the big numbers on the front & back of NYs helmets are better than the little ones they have today. Big flashy helmet 'graphics like numerals' for the spectacle that USED TO BE the NFL.
When my pops moved to Philly from Virginia he became a diehard Birds fan and he still is at 77. Man he told me stories of how bad we were then. It still pains him today 😂😂😂
I cannot watch this game again. I saw it in 1970 and it still haunts me to this day how we lost this game when we could've wrapped up the Division Title and that last game against the Rams would've been meaningless. Hearing Jackson saying HELLO to the St Louis Cardinals and Dandy Don with Don't forget Dallas is more than I can stand. Ball control with Cyril Pinder is all I kept thinking about and Clifton McNeil dropping a sure TD pass. The only chance we had to make the playoffs with Fran Tarkenton as our QB. Geez.
I was 9 and I was bullshit. Knew we could have wrapped up at least a wildcard. I think we ended up 9-5 and looking from the outside after we lost to Roman Gabriel and the Rams.
The Best Intro EVER!!! I was 8 yrs old, had to beg just to see this intro, before they sent me to bed.....thank Y T , been 55 years since I've seen #45 KC end the intro... going to sleep with football dreams
So weird, I was 8 also when this game was on. I'm a Jet fan and also remember the game. It was a long long time ago, dam, it was a year before All in The Family aired!!
Interesting to know that Fred Dryer played for legendary head coach Don Coryell at San Diego State. Coryell later coached the Cardinals and then the Chargers. Both teams were successful under Coryell's tutelage.
Old School MNF!! Love It!! Don Meredith, Howard Cosell, Keith Jackson. Playing at Franklin Field, a classic NFL venue. Although not being used by the Eagles now, thank Christ the powers that be didn't demolish it!! Also I believe Cosell left at halftime after he upchucked on Meredith's boots. Cosell was drunk as fuck, having puked on Dandy Don's roach-killers and then took a Taxi back to NYC. Also featured was USC All American Defensive End #82 Tim Rossovich, a converted Linebacker for Philly, and #35 Adrian Young, another USC All American Linebacker. Rossovich, Defensive Tackle #88 Gary Pettigrew out of Stanford, and the late Steve Sabol from NFL Films all shared an apartment in Philly during this time. Rossovich went on to be an actor/stuntman in various TV shows & films along with his brother Rick Rossovich, best known for playing "Slider" in Top Gun. Tim Rossovich had a memorable scene in Ron Howard's comedy film Night Shift with Shelly Long, wearing nothing but "Tighty-Whities" and roach-killer shit-kickers.
I was at this game. It was, I think, the 5th MNF ever. MNF was an unbelievable phenomenon. Until then, you only were able to see your home team at away games. Home games were never on local television, and I remember that when the Eagles went to LA or SF the game wasn't on TV. The nation was excited to see these nationally-televised night games on a night when usually nothing was on. Two random memories: we walked down onto the field to exit Franklin Field on the west end, where the wall with the large clock was. The crowd was so excited they tore down the goal posts. These weren't flimsy wood things by steel pipes filled with cement. As we exited the goal posts were being swung over the crowd, someone could have been terminated by those things. Many fans brought binoculars to Eagles games at Franklin Field. I remember the buzz in the crowd somewhat early in the game, and the observation that Cosell wasn't seen in the booth. Fans seemed to know why he suddenly wasn't in the broadcast booth, but I don't know if that cab be repeated. A memorable night.
It can be repeated. Leonard Tose wanted him to be happy so he supplied the booth with a thermos full of happiness. Howard puked. I often wondered if this was the origin of Cosell’s hatred of Philadelphia. I’m not sure they were on MNF again until they contended under Vermeil.
I've been watching games from the 1970 season and I am not surprised this is the best so far, the old NFC East rivalries were always highly contested and you really could throw out the records the last Eagles drive was a thing of beauty and I am glad Mark Moseley had a good future ahead of him because he looked pretty weak in his Eagle days
This video brings back a lot of memories. As a kid growing up in the Boston area in the 70's, I'd watch a lot of the Giants games on CBS (New England was still a huge fan base). Bob Lurtsema, Spider Lockhart, Ron Johnson, Ralph Heck, Tucker Frederickson, Clifton McNeil, Fred Dryer, Doug Van Horn and, of course, Fran Tarkenton.
This game was played the night before my 3rd birthday. As a kid growing up in Minneapolis, I would become a big Vikings fan and root for "Fran The Man" during his second run in Minnesota. I had no idea that Bob Lurtsema, who would go onto fame in mid-70s as "Bench Warmer Bob" for the Purple People Eaters, was a NY Giant in 1970 along with Tarkington.
A lot of people my age (born 1965) forget Fred Dryer was with the Giants, most of us remember him with the Rams when the Rams were one of the "prestige" teams in the NFL.
Look at the side of Howard Cosell's face at the 2:25 - 2:30 mark at the beginning of this video. Is it me or does Mr. Cosell look like Bela Lugosi's Dracula as he is looking at and listening to his in booth broadcast partner Keith Jackson?
Also gotta' love the Brylcreem commercial with Baltimore Colts Middle-Linebacker Mike "Mad-Dog" Curtis!! Now that's classic!! I have to say, Linebackers like Curtis, Ray Nitschke, Dick Butkus, Tommy Nobis, & Chuck Howley just aren't made like this anymore. These guys were fierce, aggressive, and violent football players, feared and respected by their opponents. Most, if not all of these guys had false front teeth and would remove them for the games, and along with eye-black, would look intimidating as fuck, and played with reckless abandon. Sadly, with all the dumb rules now implemented by a "softer" NFL, these great players would be fined and/or suspended for their playing style. One of Mike Curtis' classic NFL moments was when a fan rushed on the football field during a game at Memorial Stadium, picking up the football and trying to run away with it. Seeing this, Curtis left the huddle and knocked the living shit out of this guy. To this fan's credit, or luck, he got right up and was escorted out of the stadium. When asked why he hit the fan, Curtis stated that the man violated a Baltimore City ordinance by running in and disrupting a place of business. Classic!!
Was this the game where Cosell got sick and left the booth? I believe he threw up all over Meredith's cowboy boots and left the booth and took a cab home.
Five seasons (67-71) with the NYG. What's funny was Tarkenton and Norm Van Brocklin despised one another, and Tarkenton was traded AFTER Van Brocklin was fired and replaced by Bud Grant.
I first began watching the NFL in 1970 at the age of 12. I know this sounds strange, but I miss having the base of the goal posts 2 yards INSIDE the end zone.
While not related to this game, this gridiron fan recalls, from the ‘70s, one of the all time great signs hung at a stadium, in this case at Schaefer Stadium, Foxboro, MA, New York Giants at New England Patriots: the sign read: “Norm Snead Smokes the Weed.”

Since my present Giants are tanking in 2018, I just thought a good old game could uplift my spirits, but even the Giants of my youth break my heart with a late penalty flag and the loss... Maybe I should go back to the mid '80's for a happier ending and happier times!! ;-)

I mightt never have said this in my LIFE, but this was actually before I was watching NFL, and I honestly thought I knew everything, but I never knew Jackson and Cosell ever shared a booth!,
According to Wikipedia, THIS was the game where Howard Cosell was so drunk, he threw up on Dandy Don's cowboy boots shortly before halftime.....story has it that Meredith was livid and wanted to punch Howard out, but refrained from doing so....Cosell took a cab back to New York at halftime and Meredith/Jackson continued broadcasting the game with no mention of Howard...I have no idea what happened in the driver's cab on the road back to NYC....LOL
Oh my God, I loved those helmets! I start watching the Eagles a year or two later when they had Pete Liske at quarterback. This was the puke bowl when Leonard Tose had prime rib, and lobster tail and Manhattans for Howard Coselll and all the announcers and media, it was frigid cold and Leonard Tose kept sending Howard drinks and he puked on Dandy Dons boots at halftime and had to be taken home lol…. The Eagles came back and won anyway.
That game was played in the old Veterans Stadium in South Philadelphia.....the Philadelphia Philles also played there....the turf that both teams played on...AstroTurf has been linked to several players contracting Glioblastoma a very aggressive form of brain cancer....the Turf was a Monsanto product loaded with forever chemicals..PFAS... families of those players who were diagnosed with the cancer sued Monsanto
brings back the memories; Loved Tucker Frederickson; i remember when the giants drafted him; had a choice between taking him and Gayle Sayres...........

Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
This was just like it was last night for me.....watching the game in pj's- on the den carpet...dreading bed time 😴, knowing we would not learn the outcome till morning...
I had the same problem. Then one christmas i asked for a radio. Problem resolved
I know the feeling, same for me as a kid.
Or by 5pm the next day if you didn't get the newspaper!
I remember watching this game too
Never knew Fred dryer played for the Giants😂😂?
Classic Monday Night Football broadcast game! Very entertaining old-school football. I remember watching this one as a young kid.
Wow. Very nice. Loved that Giants team. Exciting to watch 😊
The real days of the NFL. Marching bands, coaches smoking, a building in back of the end zone and toughness without flags.
George Vreeland Hill Hard hitting defense!
Just imagine seeing that nowadays.coaches smoking cigarettes on the sidelines....lol...
@@jamalmccoy6074 If anyone got "caught" smoking 🚬 anywhere on the field the Social Justice fanatics would have a field day! Remember their social stance is peace, UNLESS you disagree with their opinions and issues, then they'll lynch you! They'll do anything to destroy your life. But remember they promote peace.... Bull-->💩💩!!
I was at this game. I remember it being very cold.
really? at 16:00 they announced it was 32 / 33 degrees.....wow real cold.
@@tomsmith9011 I was ten years old at the time. That was pretty damn cold to me.
I was 1 year old in 70 I love watching the older games I watched in 70s with Cosell , meredith, and pat summerall and Gifford, I always liked Gifford telling of the game and cosell RIP
God bless you Ron, you were always one of favorite players on the Giants...
Fred Dryer, star of “Hunter”, TV detective show, #89 on the Giants D Line.
didnt know he played for the giants I knew he played for the rams
Giants traded him to Rams in '72, I think..
He had a solid game. Good player, constantly harassing Norm Snead on passing downs. Played the run good too.
In memory of the broadcaster Keith Jackson; I still can't believe Dick Enberg is gone too. No comment on whom I'm picking to win this year's Super Bowl!
New England
Keith Jackson and Dick Enberg were two of the best ever. I liked Frank Gifford but he was not an improvement on Keith Jackson. Jackson was especially great doing college football.
@@halwarner3326 wrong lol
Those throw back eagles uniforms were legendary.....
37:55 Giants head coach Alex Webster having a smoke on the sideline during the game.
Cancer ⏰
Chuck Noll, coach of the Steelers, used to light up too but only when the game was well in hand. You knew the Steelers had the hay in the barn if the camera cut to Noll puffing on a cigarette.
Norm Van Brocklin puffed away on the sidelines much more than Webster, Noll or anyone else. Little shock he died of lung cancer at 57.
Lombardi smoked incessantly until quitting during the 1963 season, and Phil Bengston did until he resigned at the end of the 1970 season. John Madden was also caught with a butt more than a few times.
That's my Uncle. He smoked when he was playing. Almost everyone smoked back then. Giants great Charley Conerly was a "Marlboro Man."
🤣
Interesting to watch & compare changes in the game and the commercials, esp. if you’re an old timer who was a lad back in 1970-differences I. Rules (offensive holding 15 yards, missed FG spotted at the 20, cigarette commercials...) If Howard’s drunk, it isn’t apparent halfway thru the first quarter.
Official story has always been Howard was sick, not drunk, and he got sick rapidly. That was why he threw up.
He sounds slurred and drunk in the 2nd quarter.
No half-distance penalty either. Eagles holding at 20 goes back to their own 5.
I prefer the old field goal rules made a long field goal try a better bet than a punt
Notice how in shape players were. No hanging guts just to plug the line.
Very cool seeing Tarkenton with the NY Giants.
Love that marlboro commercial. I may have been at that game as a 4 year old. No seats just a plank. The whole place smelled like beer.
The telecast was so plan and simple. No distracting line of scrimmage and first down markers, no arrow pointing with the down and yards to go showing in it, etc.
Exactly. Just show the game, thank you.
And goalposts in the end zone. 😳
Note the lack of theatrics by players after making the most routine of plays, unlike players over the past 20 + years. And the Redskins still got the better deal in the Snead-for-Jurgensen trade.
for sure.
Some punches though, NFC East rivalries were the most intense
It would be another month before I would grace the earth with my presence. Appears folks were getting along well without me. lol!
Mom delivered me two months before.
Alot of interesting players on the field. Fred Dryer, became TVs "Hunter".
Right, after he was with the Rams, which most people my age remember him with way more than the Giants.
Love those Eagles unis, wish they'd go back to them.
players , actually a few singing the anthem ......... most players ....standing with respect ........GOD , DO I MISS THESE DAYS ! THANK U MAGIC MAN ........
FRANKLIN FIELD ..... WHAT A COOL VENUE !
R.I.P. Ron Johnson
Great player, great human being.
Great Michigan Wolverine running back who had a pretty nice career with the Browns & Giants.
@@berniecioffoletti3398 I guess even scalding hot coffee wasn't going to warm him up on that night.
I was 15. Loved this team (Giants and Fran and RJ). Watched this game.
Ron johnson was great at catching frans passes , like foreman did later for fran with the vikings
Love the cannons that go off after a Philly score
Love those Philadelphia Eagles White helmets WITH Green Wings. Bring em back
Same here. I'm not ever sure what weird-ass color they are now.
nah, green with silver wings looks best, in these eyes.
I say make the odd yellow on blue throwback unies permanent.
White helmets green wings with black outlines and face masks.
Yep, so many NFL uniforms just look silly today. Also, the big numbers on the front & back of NYs helmets are better than the little ones they have today. Big flashy helmet 'graphics like numerals' for the spectacle that USED TO BE the NFL.
Am I the only one who likes the commercials as much as the game?
Marlboro Man brings back a different time.
This was just a few months before cigarette ads got taken off the air forever.
When my pops moved to Philly from Virginia he became a diehard Birds fan and he still is at 77. Man he told me stories of how bad we were then. It still pains him today 😂😂😂
Fall 1970 when cigarette commercials were in their last few months. They were banned effective New Years Day.
I love so much about this opening. The jazzy snyth funk. A NFL game at a college stadium with a field house. Marlboro as a sponsor.
I was 5yrs old when this game aired; I only saw Fran Tarkenton play when I was a little older and he played for the Vikings
SO GREAT! THANK YOU @Majik Man for posting this!
Brings back memories! Thanks
Tarkenton was a former Viking AND a future Viking.
It is still Penn's home field and has actually been renovated a few times. It's still home to The Penn Relays.
I'm willing to bet my grandfather watched this game when it aired. He would have been 60 at the time, as I will be this coming November.
This was at Franklin Field 50 years ago. 25 years ago at Franklin Field I won a watch at the 100th running of the Penn Relays.
Cool throwback unis like the white eagles helmets
Craig Young I’ve always liked those white helmets better than the green ones. I think it gives the uni a more “bad ass” quality.
As a kid growing up in Minneapolis, I would become a big
Vikings fan and root for "Fran The Man" during his second run in Minnesota. I had no idea that Bob Lurtsema, who
would go onto fame in mid-70s as "Bench Warmer Bob" for the Purple People Eaters, was a NY Giant in 1970 along
with Tarkington.
A lot of people my age (born 1965) forget Fred Dryer was with the Giants, most of us remember him with the Rams when the Rams were one of the "prestige" teams in the NFL.
When Monday night football was a big deal!
Exactly!!!!
And it didn’t start until 9 PM Eastern time
Look at the side of Howard Cosell's face at the 2:25 - 2:30 mark at the beginning of this video. Is it me or does Mr. Cosell look like Bela Lugosi's Dracula as he is looking at and listening to his in booth broadcast partner Keith Jackson?
37:43 Sideline cameraman shows a propane tank heater. Commentator says “there’s a hand warmer, probably some briquettes in there.” 😂
This is cool! I don't remember Franklin field! Anybody with some info on it?
vikings844 it’s still there, on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. Franklin Field is Home of the Penn Relays!
It still exists.
gls600 yes, you can still see it.
South 33rd and Spruce in Philly
That was the Eagles stadium till they built veterans stadium in the early seventies.
Classic!!
Freezing weather getting tackled on plastic grass glued to concrete. Must have been fun! ;-)
i was in kindergarten for this game. what happened to the time?
Me too
Did you get to stay up to watch?
@@sjames9005 No
I was 3 years old when this game was played.
I was 7
"rookie" Norman Snead??
He looks 45 years old!
Was this the game where Cosell got sick and left the booth? I believe he threw up all over Meredith's cowboy boots and left the booth and took a cab home.
Yes it is. Watch the whole game you can hear Howard drunk and slurring in the 2nd quarter.
Wow 2 of the best to do it. Keith Jackson and Howard Cossell.
I went with my dad that night. About to turn 13. The coldest night of my life. But the el was warm and safe. Always good to beat the giants.
That was when football was real football
OMG WOW !! THIS IS EPIC !!! PURE AMERICANA !!! THE GREAT OLD DAYS
So many great names!!😂,,, I was a big fan of Tarkington back in the day when he was with the Vikings!!😂
Love those old uniforms....and the lack of "look at me" mentality.
Wow...Fran Tarkenton as a New York Giant! Only remember him as a Vikings player.
Doesn't sound strange at all. What a concept; having goal posts on the actual GOAL line....
I was in 13 when this game was played i wasn't Quite the Eagles fan Being from Philly I was a Penn State Fan. these were bad years until late 70s My Wonderful Late Uncles Were Eagles Season Ticket holders since Franklin Field in the 60s One of my Uncles on Several occasions gave me his Tickets didn't dress properly at Veterans Stadium felt like a frozen pop cycle and they'd lose made it colder.still Rest in Peace Uncle Bill
Since my present Giants are tanking in 2018, I just thought a good old game could uplift my spirits, but even the Giants of my youth break my heart with a late penalty flag and the loss... Maybe I should go back to the mid '80's for a happier ending and happier times!! ;-)
i remember this was a monday nite game i was a freshman in high school and the Giants winning streak was snapped with this close loss to the eagles it was freezing that nite at pa. franklin field. no now that i think of it i was 15 so i was in my second year of high school.
Is that Don Meredith I hear? My favorite commentator. 32:43, great example of him crackin jokes off the top of his head haha.
I mightt never have said this in my LIFE, but this was actually before I was watching NFL, and I honestly thought I knew everything, but I never knew Jackson and Cosell ever shared a booth!,
WOW !!!!! 1:02 start listening to Howard. Keith's response is awesome!!!! GEESSSS...
I believe thats a propane tank hand warmer at 37:41!
Will Drucker 1:18:29 You can hear it for yourself :)
Not entirely true. Cosell did throw up, but he was sick.
Sorry, but according to all witnesses there, he was imbibing Martinis at a very hefty pace. He was sloshed!
@@albertj.1813 The official story has always been that Cosell had been battling the flu all day and that, not alcohol is why he threw up.
You can tell Howard getting more and more sloshed as it goes along.
I've never heard this before. That's awesome! 😊
Keith Jackson the best plsy by play football announcer ever .
