- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is no underrated. It's a pretty dumb installment in the Indiana Jones movie franchise. The movie has an ugly, cheap look to it that is meant to capture the spirit and feel of the originals but comes off as a bad copycat. Nuking the fridge, swing on vines with monkeys and fire ants are just a few of the scenes that really upset fans. I go through Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and lay out the pros and mostly the cons.

This movie despite it’s massive flaws has a special place in my hart. It’s the first movie I ever saw in cinema’s. I went with my dad (who grew up with the Indiana Jones movies) when I was six years old somehow. Yeah definitely enjoyed it more as a kid, and the lego temple that came out with the movie definitely didn’t contribute to that ;)

Watching it at the cinema back then, I remember thinking Indy looked old. Looking back now, he actually looked great. What a missed opportunity it was to not have multiple Indy movies in the 90’s/early 2000’s.
Missed opportunity? We already had three great movies. It's also good to stop.... Unfortunately they decided to continue in 2008... And 2023...

At the end of the day, Indiana Jones should have stayed a trilogy.
That's not how art works. Some ppl are interested to see Indy again. I hate this lousy gatekeeping we constantly see in movie fandom. Bullshit like matrix should have been one film or pirates should have never been a trilogy. Honestly temple of doom was really stupid. But the fact it came out in the 80s, ppl give it a pass

I agree. It did add one thing that I liked to the story, though. Indy and Marion get together. I think that was an important add.
@@JohnnyZenith 1. Indiana Jones was never meant to be a trilogy. It was supposed to be a serial. Random adventures about Indy finding treasure. They stopped at the 3rd film because Lucas focused on the star wars prequels and Spielberg focused more on more grounded work.
Matrix reloaded was better than the first matrix and everyone said that back in. The nostalgia for the first matrix has made it a bit overrated. All the matrix films are literally the same. Political/philosophical talks about decision making with kung Fu. Cool if one time was good for you but for most ppl, they wanted that idea expanded.
@@brianbabin6333 Janes Cameron literally left the ending open in t2 for someone else to one day make a sequel. And the only truly bad terminator film was Genesis. T3 was fun and over the top. Terminator salvation was legit good. They could have continued in that direction if it made more money. Dark fate was good. The problem is that fans don't understand that all the terminator movies are the same. The second movie is literally the same as the first. 2 individuals get sent back in time to save/kill John Connor. Yet t2 gets a pass because of nostalgia. I'd rather have someone in Hollywood make sequels because film is subjective. I don't need a terminator or Indy movie to be the greatest thing I ever seen. I just wanna watch Indy look for treasure again. I just wanna watch a time travel movie with robot action. Why go in with that high of expectations? Just go in with the mindstate of having fun. When raiders of the lost ark came out, nobody went in expecting the greatest action film ever. They just went in for a good time and got blown away. But bro, you haven't even seen this new Indy movie. You are literally arguing with me and defending your opinion on something that you don't even know if you'll like or not. This film will seem like a classic compared to what’s just been released.
Kingdom of the crystal skull was not horrible for me, just extremely forgettable. I haven’t seen it since I rented the DVD about 13 years ago. Without watching your video, I could barely tell you a single thing about it, except for Indy hiding in a fridge. It’s a film that I never thought I needed to revisit, but somehow you make it fun to do so. Thank you, Adam!

Its really not as horrible as "some" people make it out to be. I miss 2008. The hype surrounding crystal skull wss infectious. I loved being able to see my first Indy film in theaters. It almost reminds me of my dad everytime i watch it. That is priceless

I'm with you here. It's just a pale version of the three that went before it. It's somehow both amateurish and too slick. I was pretty happy to see Marion back (and I imagine Karen Allen was onboard the second they asked). Cate Blanchett's character was a crap villain. Still, I didn't hate it. I just never wanted to see it again. If there was one character I didn't get, it was Ray Winstone's. The character served no purpose other than to copy the same character from The Mummy. He even went out the same way. And The Mummy was like a copy of an Indy movie.

Re-watching 'Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull' is as painful to me as re-watching 'Phantom Menace', 'Attack of the Clones', and 'Revenge of the Sith'.
My original take on that movie and the other three monstrosities I listed was the right take and no re-watching made me like 'Crystal Skull' any more than the first disappointing time.
I enjoyed this film and I feel like it gets way more hate than it deserves. I noticed a lot of people that go back to it realise they were too harsh and new viewers are usually surprised that this isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It definitely is flawed but I'd say it's probably a 6 or 7 out of 10.
I never hated it. It's a watchable, messy flick. It's like Jurassic Park 3 to me. An entry that didn't need to exist and has some really cringy moments yet still watchable enough.
@@AdamDoesMovies That's fair. I don't fully agree with you but I respect that view. Some people act like this movie murdered their childhood and was the worst thing ever and I feel like it gets more hate than it deserves just because it was the cool thing to do for a while. And I definitely think people made too big of a deal about Harrison's age in the film. When you watch the behind the scenes stuff, you see he's still pretty active. And looking back, he was only 4/5 years older than Tom Cruise is now and people are fine with him doing action scenes. I'm still looking forward to the new film and going to watch it day one because like you said it's Harrison as Indy and even if the film sucks, he'll be great in it
I have to be honest this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. Yeah it’s bad but Ford is 62 years old in this movie and it feels like Indiana Jones, not the absolute travesty we got with DoD. The ending to this movie was perfect and while I still think the last crusade should of ended it, to watch him reunite with his one true love and meet his son. I loved it.

Yeah, awful. Too shiny. Production design was awful... down to everyones clothing... which just all seemed brand new. Saw it once... and once was enough. But this was a fun review.
In Temple of Doom, when they jumped out of the plane with the raft, that actually happened. It was shot without edits, from start to finish. Sure, there were dummies in the raft instead of actual humans, but it was performed practically, in camera. It's really not comparable to Nuking the Fridge.
This movie was such a letdown. Great roast Adam!

With a few Toretto F&F things cut out, less CGI and no fridge scene, this thing ain't half as bad. Never minded the UFO stuff, but they went too big to quick.
This movie’s greatest contribution is inspiring the South Park episode.

First Indie movie I watched. Did ride the ride a lot when I was a kid. We lived in SOCAL so went to Disneyland a few times
That's not on you. Mom and dad should have shown you the others first. As for a ride... if it's fun and it works, it's cool for a kid to enjoy it.
Saw Crystal Skull on opening night. My friends and I were so hyped for a new Indy movie, having seen all the others as kids in the theater. We left the theater silent and went to dinner afterwards. We didn’t really talk about the movie and never have since. I guess that’s all the praise I can give it.
It's funny - The Film Theory channel just released a video where it turns out it is technically possible to survive an atomic blast if your inside a fridge. BUT they concluded that due to how the door mechanism of the specific fridge used in this movie, Indy wouldn't be able to open it from the inside and suffocate to death

I feel like too many people complain about stuff being CG even when it isn't. Sometimes you can tell that it's CG but sometimes it's not. Like the crates exploding in the warehouse. If you look up the BTS footage, they actually blew them up in that over the top way. It was a practical effect that went too far. Similarly people claim the jungle chase was filmed in a studio but they filmed it in Hawaii and they have footage showing them filming it. It's just they added CGI on top of it which made it look fake.
At least Indy didn't know he was a father in this movie. He would have stuck around had he known. I have no problem with the treatment of the character in Crystal Skull, it's the movie itself that is bad. I love the idea that he and Marion have a son, but the execution is disappointing.
Looking forward to your review of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Not looking forward to the movie itself though…
I personally love this turd and especially Mutt’s hair. I noticed you skipped over the greatest waterfall scene of all time. The monkey vine swinging scene was fantastic! Obviously I’m kidding, I absolutely hate this movie
When I first heard about this movie, before the trailer, I was excited. Long time interest in aliens and I knew about Crystal Skulls. THEN, I saw a pic of the crystal skull HERE and it actually looked like an alien. I wasn’t worried yet. I thought this could potentially be cool. Saw movie and my excitement steadily decreased throughout.
Lots of interest in 80’s properties and continuing to squeeze them for more money. I totally get it, but most of the time, they just miss the mark.
LMAO, between the neighbor's motorcycle and the "sand trap", this was better than the movie!
It was always average for me, a least Indy was still respected as a character and the final scene was well done but like most fans, it should've stayed a trilogy with Indy riding off in the sunset with his father and friends.
Just threw it in. Got to Cate Blanchett first appearance and had to stop. That accent is horrific.
While I don't think this is a great movie I still have fun with it and I actually enjoy it more than Temple of Doom as honestly think that movie is the weakest out of the for. The love interest I think is annoying, the kid was okay but I prefer Indy not having a child sidekick, the movie feels very long and I find it to be kinda boring. It does have things that I like in it though so I never skip it when I re-watch the franchise. Can't say the same for the new movie that's coming out. I honestly like how crystal Skull ended with Indy retiring and settling down with one woman.

Despite it's bad writing and lame characters I can't seem to resist revisiting Crystal Skull. As a spectacle I always feel this film lives up to the previous three no matter how ridiculous it looks. What's wrong with you Adam, you've never seen a Russian dance troupe? Those guys are awesome!
I didnt like Crystal Skull that much, but I rewatched it after I saw Dial of Destiny.
And A) its a little better than I thought (at least the first half), and B) boy its way better than DoD.

The action scenes are hokey but could be thrilling to the as-yet unjaded. The scene of swinging from vines is silly but no worse than when James Bond did the same thing in Octopussy, which seems to get a lot less flak. It’s as if there came a point when audiences began to have different expectations about action/adventure films needing to be realistic. Nowadays there’s a quasi-mythological status given to both Bond and Jones which ignores the reality that both are pulpy, silly, characters - at least on screen.
The only reason this film is Better than Dial of Destiny is that it’s at least a fun adventure movie at its core. And the tone of the film makes you feel like having fun with this terrible plot

Loving the podcast. I watched the movie when it was released on dvd. I dont remember any of it. Glad to know its not worth rewatching. Only good thing about this movie is the south park episode
I am in the minority in that I felt it was okay. Mind you I am not a huge Indiana Jones guy and I saw it in cinema with my dad and brother years ago and just found it entertaining. I am certainly not sticking up for it all that much, but I am saying for someone with low expectations who was never super into Indiana Jones (I like it okay, but BTW I love Harrison Ford) to me it was an okay movie, but I know real fan do not care for it at all.
"The 2nd worst Indiana Jones movie", Better make that 3rd worst now. I like to think Indy is tougher than the average human after drinking from the one true Holy Grail. I can't imagine its effects will stop after leaving it in that temple.

The idea of the skulls were a great idea but this film absolutely ruined all the great stories about the skull. I was big on shila or how ever you spell it. Even bringing his mom back she did the worst acting I've ever seen. Also fighting on hoods of vehicles that literally have no bounce while driving in the woods lol

I hated every bit of this movie. I tried to like it but by the time the monkeys came in i was like, “this is thee worst major cinema movie made, EVER!” 1/10
I rewatched all of them and Skull sticks out as the worst one. But Dial seems to be even worse. Skull had charm in certain areas and it was cool to see Indy back on the big screen.

I honestly can not comprehend why people hate this movie so much. It's great and fits in well with the other movies. People scream about MUH GOPHERS while temple of doom had just as much goofy nonsense Even Raiders and last crusade had some goofy stuff in it as well. Crystal Skull deserves it's spot among the other 3 movies.

Adam, idk if you watch film theory with matt pat, but he proved that Indy would survive the nuke in the fridge but would die because he wouldn’t be able to get out of the fridge because the kids used to die in those because you couldn’t open them up from the inside.
He was also launched like 4 miles into the air and was smashed into the ground like 20 times. He wouldn't have needed to worry about running out of oxygen. He was dead long before that, haha. I don't care, I still enjoy that scene.

There are LOADS of problems with this movie, but I don't have a problem with "aliens" being the inspiration for the artifact that Indy goes after. What really bothered me was actually SEEING the aliens AND their spaceship. That, for me, is where this movie truly "nuked the fridge".
Shut up about that scene already. Indy flew off a mine car track and landed perfectly in the rails again. Bite me.
For real, showing the aliens and their spaceship was the true sin of the movie. The Ark of the Covenant was a relic of the Jewish faith. Yahweh himself didn't destroy the Nazis, it was the "power of the Ark". The Sankara Stones were a relic of the Hindu faith. Shiva didn't restore life to the village, it was the "power of the stones". Same with the healing powers of the Holy Grail from the Christian faith. Jehovah didn't give eternal life.
See, all of this left a hauntingly supernatural air of mystery with the artifacts of the Original Trilogy. It was always about the objects themselves. But, in "Kingdom of the Numbskull" we're suddenly introduced to the literal aliens AND their flying saucer... AT THE VERY END OF THE FRICKIN MOVIE! Imagine if GOD showed up at the end of "Raiders", and picked up the Ark, and said, "Sorry, I'll be taking that... YOINKS!"
Dumb, dumb, DUMB. They should have left the mystery with just the skulls themselves. We didn't need to see our heroes nonchalantly reacting to a FREAKING FLYING SAUCER COMING OUT OF THE GROUND AND VANISHING INTO SPACE BEFORE CREATING A NEW LAKE ON THE MAP OF EARTH.

I'm nearly 50, original trilogy is superb, probably best to erase the cash grab last 2 for what they are

I think you’re thinking of Temple of Doom. In rewatching them Crystal Skull has a lot of flaws but it’s not a bad movie by any means and it’s a very worthy entry. Temple of Doom on the other hand, is really brought down with its lack of globe trotting and the Jar Jar of Indiana Jones movies-Willie Scott. Not to mention the somewhat racist depictions of Indians. It has a few moments of greatness but it’s the most mediocre film in the franchise. Just my opinion.
