I wonder could you just in the end of a book throw in a comment from one of the characters (the lancer) that the consequences will come later for the MC actions. Aka the consequences will be in the next book?
Sure! The Hero's Journey isn't a strict set of rules you have to follow. A New Hope kind of did this since there wasn't much of a cost at the end of the movie, but Empire Strikes Back has a rough start!
