Maggie, Another great video- congrats on 3k subscribers! If people are from the US & have never had a bank acct in other countries, its a surprise how more involved it is in other countries. Panama used to be far more lax on letting people open up accts years ago if the were only visiting, but started to close accts about 2 years ago that weren't active. By active that means no transactions over a 6 month period. Multi-Bank and other were closing accts down. So, now as you point out they want to see that people are residents. When I got my bank acct, I brought in my passport, temporary card, letter from my US Bank that I was in good standing, Soc Security letter, letter from my attorney plus a copy of my rental lease. I also included a letter from someone I knew in Panama, but that was not required. The process took about 2.5 hours. I only put $1,000 in the bank, I've heard some people have put as little as $100 in to open an acct, but I thought it looked better to have at least that much in my acct. Yes, they really look at your signature & have been asked to redo my signature in the 'past.
Re real estate, we both must have watched the same video ;) One thing that they didn't cover is that many Sellers may do Seller Financing on their properties. While I'm not in the Panama City area, there is a very number of unrented unit in the city, so I would think there might be many owners open to considering this. So, for those that want to fund their grandkids education, they could put less down on a property & still have affordable rent/mortgage.
This is true. Thanks for adding that bit of info. Yes, owners holding properties that have not sold might be open to financing. Thanks for watching and for taking he time to comment.
@@singlewomenretiringabroad Yes, I'm subscribed! I love all of your videos! The only caveat I have on real estate is to be really sure that not only do you like the area but realize if you want to sell your property it can take years. This is not like selling a home in California or Toronto (Canada), homes sit for a long time before they move unless they are priced low.
Thanks for another great video. You always give such valuable, realistic tips. Safety is an important consideration for EVERYONE, not just single women. Crime doesn’t discriminate! 😉
Thank you for the information and sharing your experiences. I have not yet applied for the pensionado visa, but I've been figuring out my banking plan. Thanks for breaking things down.
Hi Ms Maggie. I’m loving your videos. Very informative. I have a question that maybe you can answer. I plan on renting for six months before I make a final decision. What do I do as far as a bank account so I can pay my rent, or other bills while there. (for the six months) Is it wise to open an account if I haven’t made up my mind? Thanking you in advance for any info you can provide. I didn’t mention that I’m scared to make that move. (But I want to) Keep up the great work. Looking forward to more. I do hope I get to meet you in my journey to Panama. Chrystal
Hola...you can open an account here if you start the residency process. If not, you will have to make ACH transfers so you can pay your rent. ATM fees can be high based on your US bank.
Have you been getting some conflicting information about how to secure a first apartment in Panama City? What about opening a bank account...I got inaccurate information when I was getting ready to sign up. Let me know in the comments some inaccurate information you were given. Let's chat.
Maggie, when traveling I have been using the Costco Citi Card which does not charge a fee for foreign transactions. Would that be an option in Panamá while on a scouting trip?
Great info Ms. Maggie. Everything you said is on point. I just got back from Panama and it's definitely different being there scouting and really seeing things I'll say "live and direct" 😊 as opposed to looking at rentals online. Congrats on your milestones🎉
Hola MS Maggie, I’ve been to panama 2 times and I love it there , i would definitely make it my home however, I normally stay in the city of panama. Where do you refer me to stay so I can gather more information and an area where the Airbnb are much cheaper ? I want to move with my 11 yr old son and I’m 32yrs of age.
Hola.. there is so much more to consider when moving with a child. Unfortunately, this is not my area of expertise. I suggest you join some of the Facebook groups for families with children and then ask your questions. People are usually very open and helpful. Thanks for writing.
Great conversation Maggie! Thank you for all the info.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching.

Oh.. no bueno...I guess being on the patio was not such a good idea. I'm sorry.
