  • Might as well call it Project Hero after that TSS post.
    So, yeah, the project's looking pretty bad today. Lots of things in need of fixing and all...Anyways, here's a changelog:
    - Footstep Sounds.
    - Egg Fighters. WIP.
    - Updated Spindash animation.
    - Updated Roll Trail.
    - Removed Wisps.
    - Vault, Ledge grabbing, Wall Jump updates (probably showcased some of these before. Heavy WIP, as you can clearly see).
    NOTE: Boost still exists, It's just disabled.
    This progress video is quite short, since I mostly tried to focus on refining the features I already had.
    Also, don't expect a release. Let's be honest, it's a Sonic fan engine, these die in months, and this one will probably suffer from the same fate.

    Reason behind removal of Wisps:
    Wisps are kinda lame as gimmicks, in my opinion, at least, and could be easily implemented to enhance an already existing feature instead, or to add a brand new feature. For instance, imagine the Fire Shield granting you the Burst Wisp's ability. I feel like it could be a nice refreshing twist instead of having these alien guys just...be there for no reason.
    Though, seeing as it might be released as an open-source engine, adding them back will still be in consideration for that case.

      well i hope to see the wisp in the mode you are making in, finally someone thinks about a 3D game gimmick for that bois, i don't love the wisp but i will love see it in a new better way (at least the spike one where you can go to walls in 3d now...)

      Hero It would be really weird for a fire shield to make you jump repeatedly. Imagine if the bubble shields could make you swim. Imagine if an electric shield could extend its Ring absorbing ability to crazy lengths.
      That's where the Wisp could take over for those options. Drill can swim really fast. Void can absorb everything. Laser can travel insane distance. Burst makes you jump to awkward locations as well. Hover can float, follow Rings and extend really far with Ring trail assistance. List goes on.
      I also thought shields can kinda enhance your abilities.
      Sonic has Double Jump. Electric shields give him an extended second jump.
      Sonic has Bound and Stomp. Bubble shields gives him a faster or higher bounce.
      Sonic has Air Dash or Homing Attack. Fire shields give him a stronger dash.
      I know you're already doing this but I'm just saying it anyway for clarification.

      Couldn't agree more on the Wisps. Better to simplify all the scattered Sonic power ups into compact abilities that flow well with the main abilities. Less is more. I mean if the core controls and abilities are good, which it is, it doesn't even really need a mountain of extra stuff on top of it like the Wisps or even the boost to be interesting and fun.

    The reason most Sonic fan engines die in months is because they suck. This looks fantastic. Please don’t scrap it. This is literally the best Sonic fan engine I have ever seen.
    And if you really want it to stand the test of time, release the source code. That’s what allowed Sonic GDK to last so long.
    You have a solid foundation right here, whether you believe it or not. No 3D Sonic fan engines have come this far in terms of polish. I would die to get a hold of it.

      I could actually see a game using this engine with some well designed levels finally giving the Mario games a run for their money. The physics and movement options look really fun to mess around with

    Fine! Don't release it! Then The Bumper Engine can have all of the glory! MUAHAHAHA!!
    No, but seriously. This really is something special you've got going here! True, fangames and fan-engines come and go, but so do all Sonic games. They come out, they have their time in the spotlight and then players move on. Heck, It wouldn't surprise me one bit if people decide to jump ship off of The Bumper Engine once Project Hero has its first release and, you know what? That'd be perfectly fine by me.
    If you're like me, then I'd be willing to bet that you're not making a Sonic engine just to get your name out there. You're doing it because Sonic Team couldn't deliver the experience that you're looking for, so you're doing it yourself. You have an idea of what 3D Sonic should be and, as a result, you are creating a Sonic engine that reflects that. That's why having many different open-source Sonic engines is so important! It gives potential users *options* depending on what their needs are. Nothing wrong with that, right?
    Keep it up, man. We're all rooting for you!

      spongeNUTs Raw Hedge Engine isn't popular, because, as the name implies, is just physics. You can't make a full game with so little stage elements.

    As always, you never cease to amaze me.
    One of the common issues I have with fan engines is being over flashy - this is not the case here. The new visuals on the bounce, spindash and roll look great. Really emphasizes the power behind them.
    Agreeing with many others here, I think my only concern with this project is your mindset behind it.

    I'm not sure if you've realized this yet, but your engine here has single handedly rocked the fanbase to its core. It looks plays and feels better than anything Sonic Team's been giving us, that is no exaggeration. I would hate to see this die to your own harsh criticism. I am confident when I say you are what the series needs right now. You have proved Sonic can work beautifully in 3D. Living up to your name, you truly are a hero.

    I mean, yeah, I'm aware of the fact these engines often just stop development. But...please don't. Not only does this look amazing, it would be one of many engines coming out of the woodwork lately to prove the old sterotype that Sonic can't work in 3D wrong. I want to see the smarmy bastards saying that phrase with smug looks on their faces to be brushed aside by a calvery of 3D game engines such as this, and I want this to be the leading stallion. Well either that or Sonic Utopia, that works too.

    Most fan engines fall apart because the people behind them either lose steam or don't know what they're doing. You definitely know better than anyone else right now how to move this series forwards, and the better half of this community is behind you. #TheHeroWeNeed

    This looks fantastic! I love that vault jump ability! I just like how you're actually working on adding abilities that blend with the fast paced gameplay. Like I can imagine people making level sections where you can keep up your speed by vaulting correctly over objects, or maybe there could be a type of enemy vaulting? Like if you run into a small enemy, you could quickly defeat it by vaulting over it and pushing it down, that would be rad and could add so many design options to even just running down a path! With gameplay like this that includes the roll and the great physics you wouldn't even need the boost honestly, it even has the spindash, which looks great I love the how Sonic is always put in the completely spherical jump ball when hes doing it it looks weird in other engines where it's just the model spinning. I'm just so hyped up about how good this looks man, you seem to have worked really hard on this, and I wish you the best of luck in making it. I really hope it goes somewhere you know, like you say it might just die and maybe so you would know better than me, but this honestly looks like the best 3D Sonic fan engine I've seen and I have no life man, I've seen them all! If this got out and was like made into something with levels and stuff I could see that outshining anything that would have come before it, this engine already well outshines the likes of Forces anyway. I just love the way you've gone about designing this It couldn't have been easy. I totally agree with the people who say you could be the 3D Taxman. But anyway just wanted to freak out in the comments and give some support or something, sorry for the paragraph.

      The wisps could be replaced by some stage specific feature like he said. That would make it more unique. I'm just bored of the constant appearance of the wisps in the games.

    I think I speak for everyone when I say this, but I think you're pretty much what SEGA needs for a 3D Sonic revolution the same way they needed Christian Whitehead for 2D Sonic. Someone with your attention to detail and polish, add that in with someone who can compose a soundtrack reminiscent of the DreamCast aesthetic, love for the Sonic brand overall, and someone who can deliver a great narrative topped with ambition and creativity, you've got yourself a dream team with a dream game waiting to be discovered. I can't fully articulate how important it is that this exists. You never know, it could lead to something much bigger and greater someday; potentially putting 3D Sonic back where he was nearly two decades ago. I really appreciate everything you're doing, and many others do too.

    DANG, I love how this looks so far!
    Maybe an odd request, but I'm very curious to hear what you think of this: do you think a slow-walk button would be a good addition to this engine?
    Many people weren't a fan of the run-button in Lost World, but I think being able to limit your top speed would still be a necessity for more precise 3D platforming. Perhaps this optional action could be useful, it would be easier to use than having your top speed limited by how far you move the left stick like in most games. Just a thought!
    Anyway, keep up the great work! :)

      And that could be bound to one of the trigger buttons. Since they're analogic, you could make that the harder you push the button, more speed will be held back.

      You could always do it with the control stick. Instead of pushing it all the way forward, gently tilt it forward and Sonic will accelerate to jogging speed instead.

    This is really impressive stuff man. I love seeing you create something so ambitious. What did you make this in exactly? Did you use Unity, Unreal, or something custom? Maybe something most people never heard of?
    I bet people would love to see some in depth details about how you came to specific design choices for your version of modern Sonic, your motivation behind it and some of the specifics in terms of development. You might inspire other people that are willing to go down the road of game dev.

    i suggest give sonic the ability to run up walls,since your giving sonic every ability that he had in the main games

    The thing about Wisps is that they force you to play a certain way.
    The Sonic 3 shields simply supplemented the gameplay, simply changing certain rules with the level (no time limit underwater, or lava becomes solid ground) whereas Wisps force certain parts of the level to be designed around them(hallway with diamonds, large area of dirt with upgrades and enemies littered in it) acting sort of like its own self contained minigame rather than a powerup. That may not be a bad thing, depending on the game you're trying to make.

      Actually, very few areas of Colors forced you to use the wisps, offering different paths that could be used with Sonic.
      Lost World had some areas, and you couldn't beat Generations' Planet Wisp without them, though it made sense as it was more of a representation of the game and its gimmick.
      Forces is the the same as Colors, just giving paths. -except for cube lel-
      Idk, they don't have *_force_* you to play a specific way, because you could do the same things with shields.
      It would just be way more boring.

      Zainré Fang Wisps should be super exaggerated abilities.
      Knuckles can dig. The Drill can dig faster or through stronger blocks or walls. Tails can fly. Hover can fly longer and faster. Sonic can Spindash. Spikes can Spindash up walls and ceilings and in impervious to damage.
      They would still be great and not leave a bitter taste if you utilize them correctly.
      Wisps aren't mandatory for about 95% of Sonic Colors.

    Hero have you ever considered adding music to the test stage to see how the sounds interact with an actual level? It's one thing to hear the sounds alone but you wanna make sure it fits in with some music because every level will have music. Just some advice

    While I am kinda saddened by the removal of Wisps, because I thought you had implemented them perfectly, it is not a deal breaker for me.

    You should honestly give yourself more credit when it's due. This isn't looking bad at all. It's a step in the right direction in my opinion. I hope that the next Sonic game that gets created contains what I just saw in the video such as how Sonic runs, the moves he makes after he goes in midair. Especially when his arms and legs are spread out. You really got a good thing going here. Don't scrap this at all. Please keep up the good work.

    I have to be honest with you - this is exactly what I want to be seeing in a Sonic game. Heck, this engine could even be used to produce a Sonic Adventure-like game, with Lost World elements. However, I do want to make a suggestion and well, this is going to be somewhat hard to go over but bear with me right.
    I noticed that when sonic grabs onto the wall he is able to wall jump off it, he loses all of his horizontal and vertical momentum immediately. Given the fact that sonic is a momentum based platformer at heart, this kind of feels off (i have noticed this feeling off in the official games). What I suggest is that you make it so that instead of sonic immediately lose all of his momentum the moment he grabs onto a wall he is able to wall jump off, I think that he should gradually lose horizontal and/or vertical speed after grabbing onto that wall instead.
    I also think that after he gradually loses all of his momentum from grabbing onto the wall he can wall jump off, he should be unaffected by gravity for a couple of seconds. Once these couple of seconds are up, he should probably gradually slide down that wall, with the rate he slide down it increasing over time. Something like this would honestly make the whole wall-jumping process look a whole lot better and feel a lot better and momentum based as well.

      I think the boost would work better if it were like in colors where you could ONLY get it from White Wisp (and yeah remove the ability to gain boost energy from killing enemies) and make the white wisp capsules difficult to reach or find so that it's more rewarding. and segment the boost into bars so it's more like short burst of additional speed (similar to Sonic Unleashed on Wii/PS2). That way it's not overpowered. Oh and it could only be used for additional speed and wouldn't kill enemies so you're not mostly invincible.

    Please consider re-implementing Wisps once you have the core actions and such polished. There could be a "Colorful Update". They were so cool and I loved how your engine had literally every powerup.
    Please for the love of god, promise you will release this. It's too good to let die. This is not "looking pretty bad". This is the best 3D Sonic I have ever seen. If you are sufferring burnout, that's understandable. But you need to be aware how amazing your work is, and how many people would be dissapointed if the project died. This is already miles better than GDK, for example. Everything from the animations, to the abilities and physics is so on-point! Hope this helps you feel better!

    Been waiting for another progress vid! This has incredible potential. With every video of this, you show how Sonic could evolve in 3D. Seeing this makes me realize that if you combine all the moves you've showcased so far, Sonic would be the craziest, most athletic, versatile, and "fun to play as" platform character ever. Hope Sega is taking notes.

    This is probably the most stylish Sonic fan-game I have ever seen. It's incredible how alive Sonic feels like. Quick suggestion if it's already not implemented, could you make it in a way that vaulting requires a well-timed button press (and maybe it should reward the player with stylish points, that fill up the boost).
    Also now that I mentioned a boost, does anyone else remembers the combo/link system in UnWiished, a similar boost rewarding system to that would be awesome and really fitting for this engine.

    you are like sega with modern sonic now.....but you are actually doing right......sega need you buddy.
    seriously, in the actual modern sonic games the enemys doesnt even try to attack you, just bossting up them from the sky like the team rocket from pokemon, but these enemies can actually attack, there responding more faster than the eggman canon normal robot do.
    is was a right decision removed the wisp, there is to much and i see it, and you improved more in sonic moves, thats was great, create more movements for more running altenatives. you are doing so well man, i hoping more of "project hero", GOOD LOOK MAN

    You're underestimating your own work dude. This is an amazing engine, and your work on this has been very good so far. This is without a doubt the best 3D Sonic engine, and it isn't even complete yet. It definitely won't die after some months. This is looking like it'll be the new main engine for 3D Sonic fangames once it's finished. So brighten up and don't give up on this. People are loving what you've been doing. I can't even imagine how awesome it'll be to play stages on this engine.
    Though if you do decide to give up on it please release the engine in the current state please... My heart can't handle not being able to play with this engine...

    Yo did you see those enemies and just the whole jump hop over the fence animations and parkour gimmicks ahhh the graphics are sexy
    PERHAPS TRY making the light dash as fast and sa2 with the after effects because that game had the best light speed dash

    It would be amazing if you extended the vaulting mechanic so maybe if you hold the button you can vault over multiple objects and ledges and do different flips and tricks as you go over them (similar to Spider Man PS4)

    I don't know why but this looks way more original and better than the Bunper Engine. I like how realistic it looks. You try to implement different gameplay styles so everyone can decide which moves you want to use.

    I know I've already commented somewhere on here my thoughts but I just wanted to come back and say it again.
    What you have here is the ultimate kit. The tools to make any kind of 3D Sonic game possible.
    Don't let this die my friend. You've made incredible progress and outstanding work. If you do plan to let it go. Please release a download link for it. Even if it's just the test area, I want to feel your work personally and at least make sure that it doesn't go completely to waste.
    However that's a bleak scenario. Instead, keep pushing forward. You've made something truly amazing to even just watch and THAT'S the mark of a job well done. What I find most impressive is how you've managed to fit all of the moves into the Sonic's kit without making it feel cluttered.
    Anyways that's just my two cents worth on the topic. Please keep it up my dude. I rate 11/10.

    This engine truly has the biggest potential I've ever seen in years. I believe this engine can truly show everyone how 3D Sonic can actually work, with the combination of Adventure + Boost Formula. I also believe this can bring the majority of the Adventure and Boost fans together (WOW FANS TOGETHER IN THE SONIC FANDOM???).
    This engine has pretty much all the features I'd want in a Sonic game. From Moveable camera, to the Boost and Adventure combination (minus the Lost World running animation, that sucks), this can easily be a good engine for a Sonic Unleashed PC Port, a Sonic 06 remake, or a simple demonstration of how both formulas can work in harmony.
    Please do consider releasing this as an open-source engine. I mean, look at the Bumper Engine, it gained alot of popularity on launch and was really supported by lots of people due to the fact that it brings hope to the Adventure part of the fandom. You on the other hand can fulfill people's request of having an actually good boost game. Heck, I'm starting to learn some C# just to develop some Unity games, and hopefully use this engine to its best.
    So yes, Please consider releasing this as an open-source engine. With the right people and enough time, people can make a demonstration for Sonic Team to look at, or even a fully fledged fangame.
