  • In this video I’ll be reviewing the cloud defensive rein 3.0 weapon mounted flashlight and why I would not recommend you buy it. I show close ups and go in depth on multiple different parts of the light. Surefire 640dft is an overall better investment and is slightly cheaper. Making this video in hopes of helping people so they do not make the same mistake I did. Numbers on paper do not mean something is necessarily better. If you have any questions feel free to comment. If you could like and subscribe I would appreciate that and it would help the channel. Thanks for watching.

Just got my Rein 3.0 with the 4th (new) generation switch. I haven't shot yet. No extra gaskets but it came with a inline MLOK mount and everything else yours did and the included switch is constant only. It installed fairly easily with only minor difficulty cable routing. No damage so far. I went with CD Rein 3.0 for my 14.5 build for the same reasons and also the Rein 3.0 comes with a switch. Switches cost nearly half what I paid for the Rein on top of the light and that's not including a new tail cap. Even more for the Surefire DS00 I would have needed. The weight was also a minor factor. I'm not too concerned with the durability out of the box but we will see. I'll likely be replacing the constant switch with a momentary only as the rear button on the Rein has the same functionality out of the box.

Hopefully with the 4th generation switch they fixed the sheathing breakage issue. That’s nice yours came with mlok. This older version came with picatinny but they started to ship with mlok. I’ve also seen problems with there mlok inline mount because the mounting holes are so close together, the holes would open up into each other. That light was for my 14.5 as well. Switches are expensive. The whole package for 400$+ isn’t a bad deal since it gives you all you need. I was just disappointed with the overall reliability. Unfortunately quality stuff is usually more expensive. But after having 2 failures with it being brand new, seeing other cd mounts break and them taking both off their website, I didn’t want to use cd anymore. Yeah surefire stuff can be expensive. I ended up just using a tail push cap on my 14.5 and not using a switch. A little bit more reliable, less cost, and less chance for an AD. Is the 4th gen switch constant only? Anyways, I hope it works out better for you than it did me. I thought this information should be put out there and I couldn’t recommend this product in good conscience especially with something like the surefire 640dft scout light pro that’s out. A lot better option in my opinion. Durability and reliability. Good luck with your setup👍🏼

I too spent too much time looking into the stats and the battery performance curve, i.e. how it works over time, whether it is temperature throttled or battery capacity throttled, how much each type of throttling occurs and to what degree, how much does that affect performance and practicality overall, how much time do you actually get to use the light at its max output or near max output if you don't just run it constantly and temperature throttle it, etc. But for some reason, my gut made me go surefire even though I was certain that the Rein 3.0 would be better overall and was also much cheaper overall. But then I found a surefire M640DFT in Tan for $270 and felt that was good enough for me to try it out instead. So I bought the surefire, but now I'm over here wondering if I made the right choice. Because the output performance of the Rein 3.0, especially in terms of throttling and how much time the light actually spends putting out near it's maximum output compared to the surefire made me question myself and wonder if I made a mistake.
Do you still think the surefire is better overall? When you aren't running the surefire constantly and forcing it to temperature throttle, do you think the surefire actually has worse or less usable performance than the Rein 3.0? Or does the Surefire only seem worse in tests where they are running the light nonstop from 100% to 0% battery charge?
Like, now that they have the new switch design, would you rather have the Cloud rein 3.0 or the SureFire Turbo scout

@@rondobrondo I honestly did not go that in depth in looking at flashlights. I mainly look at the candelas, lumens, run time, and if its dual fuel on batteries. I try to go with name brand durable and reliable products. Streamlight is the lowest end i would go, then there modlite and surefire. A lot of companies are try to replicate or make a better product then modlite and surefire, cloud defensive being one of them. Cloud defensive has some impressive specs, but I do not trust their products. They’re a newer company, and I had bad experiences with brand new products from them. For the price you got that surefire light, that’s a great deal if it was new. I think you made the right choice. I switched from the rein 3.0 to the 640dft as well because of the problems I had. There’s a reason the military and special forces chose surefire for their lights and suppressors. They work when you need them too and you can rely on them. If I can’t rely on my equipment and gear to work regardless of the circumstance, it almost because worthless. Even if it doesn’t have better specs, it’s going to work when you need it to. Last time I checked, cloud defensive took away the option to order their rein 3.0 and gen 2 switch off their website which says they’ve been having problems with their products. Their products also feel more cheaply made which is probably why it’s cheaper in price. Even though it’s less expensive with better specs, I’d still chose surefire over cloud defensive which is what I should’ve done from the start. I’d choose modlite over cloud defensive at this point even though cloud defensive has better output. I did not like the design of the cloud defensive 3.0 battery compartment, the double tail cap/switch or how the switch has 2 different buttons, and it felt cheaply made. I was very disappointed in cloud defensive and i costed me money. You made the right choice and you’ll be happier in the long run. Myself and other people get caught up in the specs a little more than we should. They are important but durability and reliability is what really matters even if I’m losing a little output, which you might not even notice. In my opinion, flashlights get used in shorts spurts when shooting or identifying, and then a little longer if you’re doing some kind of search and rescue. I trust Surefire and modlite, and you made a safe decision.

@@rondobrondo I think your gut made you go surefire because you know they are a well tested reliable product company with a track record. Same as a lot of other people. I think cloud defensive shed a lot of durability and construction on the rein 3.0 to get a better output. It felt lighter and more cheaply made. I think the surefire is better overall, even with it not having as good as output and being more expensive, I’d still be the m640dft for my rifle at full price and I did. I can’t think of a scenario where I would run the surefire constantly to where the battery dies or to where in temperature throttles or dims/decreases output. Maybe in search and rescue, but you’d have to run it for a really long time, and usually people switch to helmet lights for that or a hand held flash light in my experience. I think the surefire has plenty useable performance. I would say it only seems worse in tests when running the light nonstop 100% to 0%. If it’s good enough for special forces and military, it’s good enough for me. Surefire prioritizes durability, reliability, and cater towards military performance and standards. It may not be the best in every category, might be more in the middle of everything kind of like there suppressors. Surefire m640dft is a safe choice, cloud defensive is more of a gamble in my opinion. I feel I can trust my life to surefire products, that’s what they were made for. Hope this answered your questions, sorry I don’t know a lot about the in depth testing and specs of the lights. Let me know if you have anymore questions or if I didn’t answer anything properly.

@@rondobrondo sorry just now looking at the new switch. The new switch does look better with the monetary/constant single button. I’m not sure if they fixed there problems with the switches or the light. Like I said I didn’t really like the design of the battery compartment with the spinning retainer and also the light felt less durable and more cheaply made. I’m not sure if they upgraded the light, or fixed anything. I don’t make enough or get paid from anyone to rebuy and retest out their products. I don’t have extra money to just test trial stuff on and possibly lose money on. If you do, you’re of course welcome to try it out. I’m just trying to help others with giving my opinions and reviews on products I’ve used. The cloud defensive could be fine, I’ve seen people online and a couple in person use them or have them mounted. You could be alright using one but you never really know until you’re in a bad situation. From my experience with the one I had and the gen 2 switch, it seems like more of a gamble to be going with the rein 3.0 instead of the surefire. Surefire is a safe bet and not a wrong one. From my experience right now, I personally think it is superior.

Glad I helped you brother. I’ll never buy another cloud defensive again. Get the surefire 640dft scout light pro instead. Best rifle light out there. Durable, reliable, duel fuel, and good performance. I made a video on the surefire 640dft if you want more information about it.

I like the light. I ran 600 rounds with it so far no issues on the light itself. I do not like the gen1&2 switch at all. It’s already falling apart. I haven’t tried their new switch

@@4paz It might work for some people but failed to do what it was supposed to do twice for me when it was brand new. And cloud defensive not only took it off there website, but had to make a new switch which shows me they’ve had a lot of failures. I had a switch cable pretty much become defective just trying to mount it. Ridiculous for a 300$ light. I can’t recommend it with these problems especially when surefire has a better 640dft out. Hope it keeps working well for you though.

My experience with Cloud has sucked so far too. Hoping to rehome it and go with a trusty ole Surefire.
Edit: I’ve heard some people were able to mitigate their issues with their Rein 3.0 by using Molicel P30B 18650/18350 batteries.

@@DanielRodriguez-cv9jr I’m sorry to hear that. I ended up selling mine on eBay for a fair deal. There should be more testing before companies start selling products to the masses. Pretty ridiculous that you have to buy a different companies battery to get it to work properly. I switched to a surefire 640dft. It works well.
