    Love your channel guys. we're you're age - bought a Prout snowgoose 37 Elite 2 months back during UK lockdown. 50K GBP and she's in super condition. Sometimes you just have to get lucky and be in the right place in the right time. Great advice from this video and we love all the things you guys are doing. Next job for us is a toilet re fit - already had some tips from your video on that one :) See you out there !!

    Hi guys,Good points, but I think the real skill is finding sleeper cats that nobody knows about and can be bought in good condition cheap or knowing about boats that have specific known issues that keeps the price low but can be fixed by knowledgeable people. Searching for a cheap boats is standard practice. Finding something that does not need a major refit is the best trick. Usually involves patience,persistent and looking at a lot of boats but resisting buying the first boat that looks like it might work. Meanwhile make sure you have a small sailing dinghy so you can sail and/or race to keep you sailing interest up. Cheers Warren
    Ps I’d like to hear more about SA built cats from somebody who lives there. I worked for Bongers marine for 6 months in 1979 so have a soft spot for SA builders. But am way out of date now.

    Whats higher maintenance between aluminum hulls vs Fibre glass hulls?

    • @livingwiththemaias
      @livingwiththemaias  6 років тому

      Alexander de Wet Aluminium hulls are less maintenance if they are built from the correct grade aluminium. Both have pros and cons but generally aluminium hulls are much more expensive than glass hulls thus making them less popular 😊

    Excellent advice, obviously based on solid experience. Seriously considering a Trimaran though. Much harder to find at any price..... Didn't know about Dean Cats...... Thank you.

    Started watching your vlog from the start and find it lekker. It all depends if you want to renovate most of the yacht/cat then it makes sense what you are saying. It is a total different ball game if you do have the money to buy a 2000 and up yacht. Then I would recommend making use of an evaluator.

    • @livingwiththemaias
      @livingwiththemaias  6 років тому

      You'll also pay alot more for a 2000 and up yacht. Thanks for watching! Appreciate it 😊

    Sorry, I'm joining 7 months late here, but I'm interested to hear your thoughts on bridgedeck clearance (quite low on yours) and closed foredeck area (like yours has). Do these two factors raise any concerns for you in terms of blue water sailing? Cheers, Mark

    • @livingwiththemaias
      @livingwiththemaias  6 років тому +1

      Hi Mark , Welcome! there are a number of factors that do make me think twice about what yacht would be the correct one . Reputation , these dean 365 have been around for many years and have done many circumnavigations and they are in all places around the world at the moment , with that said they are reliable strong cats . they deo slam with the low dridgedeck but so do many cats even a 57 ft FP . Budget , for our budget this is probably one of the best cats out there that can get blue water sailing done.
      Hope this helps and you enjoy the loads of work that we had to do on this old lady ! Kind Regards Ricky and Simone

      @markmuller2320 6 років тому +1

      Sweet. I only ask because it's something I'd like to do and I have sleepless nights worrying about whether no trampoline and low bridgedeck are a compromise too far and maybe I should just go mono! Thing is, I love cats! (And catamaran 😉) They simply put monos in the shade for accommodation and, if sailed sensibly, will go anywhere a mono will. I read an article once which debunked the safety issue. It said thay everyone always cites the (relatively) frequent news footage of an upside down cat in the middle of the ocean. What those people don't mention, the article said, was that if it was a mono there'd be no footage at all, because it would be at the bottom of the ocean!

    a resource i didnt hear you mention is owners groups. almost every brand of boat out there has an owners group. these people are intimately familiar with the actual boat you are working on and my experience has been they will jump at a chance to 'show off' their knowledge

    • @livingwiththemaias
      @livingwiththemaias  6 років тому

      charles curtius Good point, the reason we don't have an owners group for the Dean catamarans 365. But it's a great point for other yachts 😊

    Gemini cats are not well built but are great for sailing lakes and flat water

    • @TheCmac1966
      @TheCmac1966 6 років тому +2

      Geminis make crossings all the time. I know of two in the South Pacific that are constantly making long crossings in heavy seas. The reason they are so inexpensive is because they are spartan inside and the rigging is a little too small and simple for the design, that said, they are stout and can take heavy conditions easy. .

    hi guys, just found your channel yesterday and put it on the watchlist. Actually, I'm in pretty much the same situation as you two, even bought the identical Dean 365 (for less, but in better interior shape, although Thelxinoe's exterior looks quite crappy at the moment >:-).
    Intend to move my remaining stuff and myself to South Africa in July, do the final works on board and set sail in november, so chances are not too bad, that we'll meet somewhere in the not too far future, I guess. Watch out for www.thelxinoe.de, I'll keep an eye open on your channel :-)

      my comment on the rebuild
      "i hope they realise that all the box section furniture that was laminated to the hull,or sections filled with foam were designed to give the hulls longditudinal stiffness to stop the hulls flexing.
      the average hull thickness is only about 8- 10~mm so they will have to pay considerable attention to detail to replace the structural integerity on the rebuild, vertically and longditudinally with new bulkheads , stringers and floors laminated to the hull ,otherwise there will be a risk of the hulls breaking up in any big wave action.
      hopefully he is planning on the modular interiour in nidacor(or PU foam)"
      fasbyt,it's lekker by die see, alles van die beste,alex
