I served in the US Navy from 89-97 onboard Spruance class destroyers USS Obannon and USS Thorn as a sonarman. Got to cross deck to the HMS Broadsword during a Baltic Cruise in 92. The difference between the 2 Navys are to numerous, but 2 things I will not forget was the lack of cold drink and if you are going to Attack the Royal Navy do it at Tea Time. Fair winds and Following seas.....

Surprises me that they didn't mention this tidbit: When a plane touches down, he actually pushes the throttle to maximum. That's because, if he misses the arrestor wires, he doesn't have enough distance to stop, and he's moving very slowly. So he needs to accelerate again to take off again and come around for another pass. Missing the wires is called a 'bolter' by the way, and I don't know about RN practice, but in the USN, if you do that, you get a dunce cap equivalent over your seat in the briefing room, till the next guy 'bolters'.

Took my dad last year and he served on the aircraft carrier in 70's that this display is based on. HMS Ark Royal. he loved the display and spoke fondly of his time in the Navy (23yrs) sadly dad has "crossed the bar" , in conclusion well worth the visit.

Seeing the images of the new carriers with the F35 at the end makes me shiver with delight. I was given the amazing oppurtunity to wonder around the first of those new 70,000 ton carriers in Rosyth while they were still being built last year. The scale is mind bogglingly epic to walk inside the real hanger of and imagine it in Royal Navy service soon. Absolutely amazing oppurtunity.

The carrier experience is absolutely breathtaking as a child. I first visited the air arm museum when I was 6 and I genuinely believed that I had flown via helicopter onto an aircraft carrier away from the museum. However 10 years later I competed in the “flight-start challenge” in the museum and we had to get to the carrier deck, and rather than waiting for the tour, we simply walked through a “flying helicopter” full of small children. I’ve never felt so guilty in my life.

Hey Jingles, if you ever come to America, you should really go to the U.S.S. Hornet that is docked in Alameda, California. It's a World War 2 Aircraft Carrier that is explorable and is known to be haunted by sailors. It's an awesome place to come to if you're in the U.S.

Jingles, I live in Fall River, Massachusetts where we have an incredible Navy collection. The Battleship USS Massachusetts (South Dakota Class) the submarine Lionfish (Gato Class), The Destroyer USS Kennedy, 2 PT Boats and an East German Missile Boat. We still use the Battleships guns for special occasions! When you are in the neighborhood as one Veteran to another you will always have a place to stay! The shell from the French Battleship Jean Bart is still on the USS Massachusetts where it hit the number 3 gun turret!

Wow, jingles you are so lucky to have such a museum in the UK.
It's hard to find a good museum in germany, and by this I mean a museum where they are not goign to tell you "these are evil warmachines and things, they are evil"
The only good military museums in germany I know are Wilhemshaven and Munster.
If you have the chance to visit them, you should go for it.

FAA Museum should add a small poll to a ticket, asking "Have you been encouraged to visit the museum by the Mighty Jingles' video tour" that'd be left in a box at the exit, just to see how many people went there afterwards (I'm certainly going next time I'm in Britain).

Hey Jingles, I don't know how much you get to travel to the US but the first full week in June at the Reading Regional Airport in Reading, Pennsylvania is WWII Weekend. Its a big airshow and WWII living History with reenactments and villages and camp life. I've meet guys that come as Wehrmacht and really are German...and Russian guys reenacting as the Red Army. WWII Weekend is the largest WWII Gathering in the US...as in over all airshow and reenacting. Its very cool. I can get you more info if you're interested, I think you would love it!

The Fairey Gannet... world's Ugliest Airplane. Now I have been aboard carriers sucj as the Midway in San Diego and the One up in Alameda (Oakland California), but the "multi media" presentation of this is outstanding and gives a better odea of the work that carriers do. I do not think there is anything that matches this that I have heard of.

A great tour and it looks like a fantastic place to visit. Too many museums are "dead" in their exhibits, even museum ships. If a show like this is not possible, then at least the smell should be attempted. Just as you pointed out; smell is part of the overall experience.

Jingles, if you ever get the funds to hop across the pond, you should come check out the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Not only do we have a lot of old warbirds here, you can book to go up in one of them.
It does get rather pricey though. Goes from $60 to go up in a Dakota to $2500 to up in the Lancaster bomber.
If nothing more, the airshow we have you can watch the lot go up. We had a Mosquito and Me-262 come last year.

Enjoyed the video as usual Jingles thank you. :) My dad was a pilot for the US Marines while I was growing up so I recognize our aircraft pretty easily, but not many of the ones you are sharing with us at this museum so these have been very educational for me.
One of the things that caught my attention was the carrier "launch" of the F4. The silhouette of the launched plane looks more like an A4 than the F4. I may be seeing it poorly though, or it could be any number of RN aircraft I am unfamiliar with. I don't see upswept wings in the launch video they have projected on the wall.
