Been there, nice museum. Refreshingly roomy after all the European museums that cram as many display items into as small a space as possible (mostly because they don't have nearly the space they need nor the budget to move to larger premises, if such can even be attained).

As an addition to your words at the end, Jingles, the Museum is always happy to hear from volunteers with any experience/knowledge of the aircraft, as well as cleaners, painters and just general staff. Sure, you don't get paid, but you get to spend all your time amid these wonderful planes.

Imagine doing your rudimentary flight/combat training in a Tiger Moth and then a few weeks later you are shoved into the cockpit and in control of a 667kph/345mph/360kts Spitfire , having to dogfight and down Me 109's and Hinkle's , then ending your career flying a Vampire. Astounding.

Jingles, I live in a place in Norway and right beside the local airport there is a flight museum. In it are a number of aircraft from the Second World War. As far as I remember there is a catalina, and a number of other WWII planes and motors. They're currently reconstructing a German floatplane that crashed into the fjord during the war. It's in a good condition as well. Also, if you didn't know already they've found a Do217 off the coast of the uk in good condition which they will be repairing

I used to work across the road from Duxford, in the summer we used to get our own private shows when they were practicing for the big events. It was an awesome way to spend a lunch break, lying in the sun watching a F8F, Sabre or Mustang looping overhead!
I am planning to go on the 26th also, hope you enjoy the show!

If you get to the states, I would highly recommend the Military Aviation Museum in Pungo (Virginia Beach) Virginia. Large collection (60+) aircraft on premise, 90% are in flight worthy condition, RAF Goxhill control tower, and a hangar from 1938 Cottbus Germany. one of the highlights is a flying De Havilland Mosquito

The de Havilland DH.100 Vampire was a British jet fighter commissioned by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Following the Gloster Meteor, it was the second jet fighter to enter service with the RAF. The Vampire served with front line RAF squadrons until 1953 and continued in use as a trainer until 1966, although generally the RAF relegated the Vampire to advanced training roles in the mid-1950s and the type was generally out of RAF service by the end of the decade.

I take seeing a Spitfire for granted as we have one in our museum in Stoke on Trent. They nearly got rid of it but the city made donations and now it is safe. It is cool though as they have one of the Hispano guns out on display so you can see the whole thing

Just the one. A much prized Solent Haggis thought to have migrated with a herd from the Highlands back in the 1970's. The leather from the Haggis is much sought after being sturdy enough for jackets and coming complete with buttons and pockets; added bonus being that the Haggis comes in small, medium and large..

Hi Jingles! You're going to like a lot the Duxford museum visit, but notice that it takes a lot of time to visit the 7-8 halls this museum has. I was there the whole day and I couldn't finish it! When you arrive you must go directly to the planes, RAF and USAF hangars and then to the precious tanks hall, this will take you hours of joy. Then visit the rest of the halls if you have time left :)

the thing you first pointed to is a 'flying flea', I don't know the French name but many people in the UK built this plane :) I visited the Eagle in 1958 at Istanbul - I enjoyed wandering amongst the Vampire jets on the deck. And if you are in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada, be sure to visit the Shearwater air museum which has a "string bag" on display!!

Awesome video. I've been to this museum a few times and thoroughly enjoyed it. I seem to remember you can ask a member of staff to take you inside the cockpit of the Sandringham. They can only take 3-4 people at a time as its so cramped, and they need accompany you as the only way to get into the cockpit is up a small ladder (see 5:14) Defiantly an experience to remember. On another note, I believe my uncle flew Sea Vixens many years ago but he never speaks about it.

The de Havilland Vampire was apparently a fairly common sight at one point where I live, flying low along the River Bann in Northern Ireland. My father also used to work at Langford Lodge in Northern Ireland where Martin-Baker had (still do I believe) their high speed rocket sled which was used for testing the ejector seats.

A little tip if you are considering going outside of the UK for an experience, there is a club about 7 miles from where I live that has an operational old swedish airforce DeHavilland vampire. They offer an oppurtunity to come along for a flight in it, for a price(think it's around 1200 GBP, worth every penny) the flight lasts about 20 min but like I said, worth it(IMO). Hope this didn't sound too much like a commercial, if you want to know more, send me a PM and I'll translate their site.

Some times they fly Spits, they have a Hurricane they fly, they have a Fairey Firefly, a Hawker Seafury. Then all sorts of American planes of course. They have the only original zero left in the world that flies.
They have a Mig-15, an F-86, and two T-33 trainers. Makes for a helluva' Korean Air War show.

I highly recommend the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. Been there twice and still wanna keep going. Kind of a trip from way down in Texas, though haha.
Now that I think of it, there's a virtual tour online. Definitely worth a few minutes to check out.

Jingles! You sir, need a Hawaii'n vacation! Come check out the Pacific Aviation Museum at Ford Island Pearl Harbor. Of course you have to visit the Arizona Memorial as well. A very somber experience but one you will never forget. We also have the Mighty 'Mo'. USS Missouri (BB-63) where the Imperial Japanese forces signed the formal surrender, 2 September 1945.

I got in the cockpit of that Short Sandringham when I went there a few weeks ago. Apparently that thing was a sky porcupine or hedgehog because of all the guns that it had.

The interest of this won't die out. I'm only 15 and I'm really interested in all branches of military history and modern military.
It will probably decrease but it will certainly not die out.

I am not 100% if it is the same plane, but I believe that the bicycle-powered plane was the plane they made in the documentary "Flight of the Concord" if any of you are interested in it's history.

Hey Jingles - Have you considered visiting the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville Oregon USA? It's a long flight from where you are, but you could see the Hughes H-4 Hercules "Spruce Goose".

You clearly haven't seen the Spruce Goose at the Evergreen Aviation museum down in McMinnville, Oregon x3 now that's a massive aircraft.
