  • On October 1st, Wargaming invited the Press to Chatham Historic Dockyard in Kent to unveil World of Warships and announce the new German Cruisers and Soviet Destroyers. Since we were there anyway, I took the opportunity to get a look at the Oberon class Attack Submarine "HMS Ocelot", the Victorian sloop "HMS Gannet" and the worlds' only surviving British World War II Destroyer, "HMS Cavalier". Oh, and I looked at some PC game about ships too.

    That was a super guided tour by Irene.
    She was so charming, had great stories and such a very nice charming laugh.
    If anyone needs a tip for super guiding that must be her!

    Best tour you've filmed. Irene is absolutely lovely, camera work is smooth and well composed, audio sounds great! Wonderfully immersive tour video!
    I've been on quite a few subs, but I've never seen such cramped officer quarters! Maybe a Romeo class boat, but even WWII US Navy boats had more room for the Big Boys

      +donaldjasoncrunk Totally agree!
      You have to respect a tour guide like Irene. She probably hears the same jokes, the same one liners ((poop deck comes to mind...) constantly. Yet she can still find it in herself to laugh and enjoy it all the same. Takes talent :D
      Edit: Jingles, you need to send this video to Irene so she can see herself if you haven't already! :)

    Many years ago my Dad and I visited HMS Ocelot. I'm a Kent local, so the dockyard is about 20 minutes down the motorway. When I visited, Ocelot had just arrived and was missing its dome after an accident bringing it into the dock. We were the only two visitors so we had a personal tour of the sub, including letting the 8-year-old me play with the main controls. Chatham dockyard is just great.

    So WG chose Chatham Historic Dockyard to announce an early 20th century naval warfare game that ignores and excludes the RN?

    • @MoA-Reload...
      @MoA-Reload... 9 років тому +2

      Annoyingly the marketing department seems to be getting the final say on the development schedule. Wargaming aren't stupid. They know the Royal Navy is the one most of the community wants to see. Even their choice of venue there is just to remind everyone RN is coming...just going to be a while. They've still to launch HMS Hood as a premium for a start. While they haven't said they would it's an obvious move.

    • @San4311
      @San4311 9 років тому +6

      +Turbogerbil They don't ignore it, they think like businessmen. There are more German and Russian players playing the game than British.

    • @outrageousgamer315
      @outrageousgamer315 9 років тому

      War Gaming needs to add a British tech tree into this game and yes I know they have added some British ships

    • @turbogerbil2935
      @turbogerbil2935 9 років тому +3

      +San4311 Oh I understand their marketing strategy well enough - US vs JPN for the US and Asia market, RU vs DE for the Russian and European market. Its pretty much the same for WoT: British tanks are treated mostly as "meh" fillers to pad the game out a bit. Probably the RN line will suffer the same fate whenever it is dragged out.
      I'm just pointing out the paradox of having a PR event for a non-RN (for one year, two years maybe?) game in a historic RN base...

    • @Madhattersinjeans
      @Madhattersinjeans 9 років тому

      +San4311 I don't mind it actually. It gives them more time to iron out issues with the game currently and time to balance the existing ships enough that when the RN are released it should be a reasonably smooth transition.

    I am an excellent swimmer, having been a waterpolo player for 6 years, and an exceptional diver, I can drive a length of a swimming pool, 50m, on a breath, couldn't do more but am a fat and old now, and do not have even a hint of claustrophobia, but if somebody told me that I had to serve on a submarine I would immediately desert. I do not get how people can serve on a ship, and when I even imagine sense of helplessness that you get not being able to even hear what is going on while you are submerged... It's scary!

    Like you, I was a 'skimmer' or a 'target' too, but I went to school (USN Navy Nuclear Power Program) with several wannabe bubbleheads, and they are their own breed, no doubt. I went to a bird farm and served for 4 of my 6 year obligation (the other 2 being all in school). As large a s a Nimitz Class carrier is, I still had days I felt cramped, and we still suffered from time to time with water shortages... I can only imagine what it must have been like on a WW2 era Submarine. But, as they say in the Navy, "Choose your rate, choose your fate"... and as the flagship of the fleet, we at least got to stop in all the best ports of call (that could accommodate a floating city, anyway). Loved the video, Jingles, love to tour old ships and battlegrounds, and I missed this opportunity when I had a short stopover in London, but this was good enough to almost count being there.Cheers,EM2(N)/SW 'gumborex' on the NA server

    "Submariners are a strange breed". Welcome to MY world, Rear Admiral - or should I say, "skimmer", lol. 20 years serving on USN submarines, 1977 to 1997. Any submariner will tell you, there are only two types of ships in the world - submarines, and targets. In the USN, we called surface sailors "skimmer pukes", and they called us "bubbleheads". Whenever someone comments that I'm a crazy old SOB, my reply is "Of course I am - I spent 20 years going to sea aboard submarines - do you think anyone in their right mind would go to sea aboard a ship THAT'S DESIGNED TO SINK?".

    Oh, one further thing - it's not "sub-mariner" - it's pronounced "submarine-er". Figures that a bloody sparktrician would get it wrong.

      You my friend have my upmost respect :) I worked at sea on civilian shipping for a number years and was an RNLI volunteer for a bit and you will never get me on a sub...i don't care how well designed and tough they are, if I can't see the sky and the water at the same time any time I want for longer than I can hold my breath for I ain't doin it.lol

      +jeremiah9561 Actually, the second sub I reported to in 1983, there was a guy in my division that was 6 ft 6 - he drove a bloody Honda Civic as well, lol (back then, Honda Civics were like Fiat 500-sized). It really depends which navy and what class of submarine you're talking about serving on - at least for the USN, with their big nuclear powered boats, they've been designing them with 6 ft plus sized crewmen in mind since the late 70's. The Ocelot is TINY - you could probably fit her inside just the missile compartment on a Trident ballistic missile submarine. My first boat was one of the original 44 Polaris ballistic missile submarines, built in the early 1960's with WWII-era sub design philosophy still in mind, same era as the Ocelot - it was cramped for living and machinery space as well, though nowhere near as bad as the Ocelot. The second boat I reported to in 1983, a then-brand new Trident ballistic missile submarine, the first time I went back into the engine room, I thought I was in a bloody cathedral. There was so much open space on the inside of that boat, compared to that older sub, I actually felt rather naked at first. Over 18,000 tons - bigger than a WWII heavy cruiser - we had separate 9 man bunkrooms for the crew, a crew's lounge, two separate heads for the crew with two showers each, a separate laundry room, a proper separate CPO Quarters (ie, "goat locker"), a proper Wardroom, and staterooms for the officers. It was like getting moved from a Motel 6 up to a Hilton Suite. The ONE main thing that might be a sticking point would be the sleeping arrangements - those bunks are only so long - if memory serves, even on a Trident, gents that were much over 6 ft didn't have a lot of room to stretch out in their bunks.

      +jeremiah9561 TBH, don't think I would have cared for being stationed on a "bird farm" either. Something to be said for being on one of the smaller ships, where you have the chance to at least have a nodding acquaintance with everyone else on the crew.I still think that carrier drivers in WoWS should be called "bird farmers", lol.

    Mitchell Oates:
    Probably the best Submarine movie ever filmed was the German production of "Das Boot" (The Boat). It was originally a 16 hour mini series on German Television and was then edited down to 2.5 hours and released in the U.S. in 1981 in German with English sub titles. The best version is the 3 hour Director's cut. Though it's filmed from the WWII German view it's the most accurate film of the life of a "pig boat" and it's crew of the U-96.
    The U-96 was a type VIIC model launched August 1, 1940, in WWII she went on 11 tours sinking 27 Merchant ships and Damaging 4 ships. She was sunk with all hands on 30 March 1945 by US bombs in Wilhelmshaven. "Das Boot" was written by the War Correspondent, Lothar-Günther Buchheim, who sailed with the U-96 on one of her patrols in 1941.

    Its interesting to see that the Oberon and the Gato were similar sizes, but the Oberon seems more cramped.

    My brother is a submariner in the US Navy. He sailed as a sonar operator on the USS Toledo for about 5 years before getting shore duty to train sonar men. He says that in the US Navy, calling them a submariner is taken as an insult, because it implies that they are less than a mariner (as a civilian mariner, I estimate that there's probably some truth to that) and instead they like the be called submarine-ers, because that emphasizes that they are on submarines. I told him that thing about crabmariners and targets. I'm guessing he'll agree.

    That sub was downright luxurious compared to the Type II I've visited. One toilet for 20 men. :)
