    BJJ
    White to blue = pretty fast
    Blue to purple = a little longer
    Purple to brown = forever
    Brown to black = fast
    Judo
    Beginner to rokyu = almost instant
    Rokyu to Gokyu = fast
    Gokyu to yonkyu = pretty fast
    Yonkyu to Sankyu = pretty fast
    Sankyu to Nikyu = pretty fast
    Nikyu to Iikyu = a little long
    Iikyu to shodan = forever.
    In BJJ you end up with forever purple belts. In judo you end up with forever brown belts. These are the plateau points that many have a hard time breaking thru.

    I’ve never really cared for time being a factor to be honest, it’s when you improve. If there’s a guy at your gym who’s been there for 10 years and is barely any better, he shouldn’t have progressed. If you’ve got a prodigy who’s training at the gym 8 hours a day winning tournaments and submitting people way beyond their level in the gym and out the gym then they should be higher than the belt they are. It’s not a how long thing, it’s a quality thing where you use your time wisely.

    • @OGFITNESS
      @OGFITNESS  3 роки тому +5

      True. but generally speaking the average guy will train 2-3 times a week and at that rate it takes the 5-10 years. But of course the obsessed and gifted will get there black belt faster.

      Eh. I roll with guys who are black belts but have had life throw isht at them. Cancer, surgery, etc.
      Those guys are talented af, but you wouldn’t tell because they are coming back.
      The belt should be earned. That means it cannot be taken away, and the respect will remain there even after the person is dead.
      The belt isn’t about the current talent level.

    When I trained Judo in Poland for 10 years, the sensei's didn't give belts as easily, I did it for approximately 9/10 years 2/3 times a week and I was able to get to green (Blue, but i didn't want to pass, as I didn't feel like one).
    On the other hand when i went to the Netherlands and trained there for a year, I had seen 12/13yo kids with brown belts.
    In conclusion I think it all depends on the club, and mostly on the sensei. I still remember my 1st sensei spreadsheet when he had an achievement of being 1st/2nd/3rd on the national championships, just to be able to pass on black.
    Though, my father who started older (with same sensei as my first), got the belts quicker, I think the attitude might be a bit different

      Also from Poland, I’m only doing it for a year now 3 times a week and I’m still white belt. The highest belt apart from sensei (3rd dan) is a blue belt who traines 10-11 years by now. I think in Poland judo community doesn’t care about belts that much, we got that „belts doesn’t fight for you” mentality I guess

    Personally I also think its a better idea to learn Judo before Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (if you're serious about grappling arts) because BJJ came from Judo and its good to have the basics in check first.
    Theres very little takedown training I feel in BJJ like 80/20 ground/standing, so to get where you want in BJJ much easier, Judo should be first. Also those who compete in BJJ are much deadlier when they know both.

    • @rns7426
      @rns7426 2 роки тому +3

      More like 95/5 for BJJ. I’ve literally seen takedowns come around in a curriculum once or twice per year in 3 different BJj schools.
      I realize heavy competition clubs in certain areas may be different. But 95/5 or 90/10 would be common place for your average BJJ club across the US.

    What you have to realize though is the belts mean two different things a BJJ black belt means that person is an expert, a Judo black belt means that the person can take whatever you can throw at them in a comp so do your worst, it's how my sensi explained it to me. Training both has actually helped me speed up my grading in Judo(my sensi said he saw me doing stuff higher ranked stuff) because i've drilled judo stuff during open mat stuff at the bjj club I'm a member of and drilled it in respect of how it will help me with my all round grappling.

  • @Globalnomadsj
    @Globalnomadsj 3 роки тому +11

    I would say it actually varies a lot depending on the countries and the coach.
    In countries where they have a bigger judo population, I would say fosters the mentality you mention where blackbelt means you have grasped all the fundamentals. In countries where judo community is rather small, they want their blackbelts to maintain a certain level and therefore make it challenging to get your blackbelt.
    In places like Korea and Japan, it takes about 2-3 years. But there’s a huge variance in skill levels between competition judoka vs everyday judoka. Bear in mind competition judokas typically train 3-5 hours per day 5-6 times a week.
    In Australia where I currently live, I would say on average anywhere between 5-10 years. You need comp points to progress from Blue belt onwards.

    In judo it depends on which part of the world you practice.....where im from it takes on average 6 to 8 years to achieve a shodan ( 1st degree black belt), this is due to the initial japanese influence here in the 1950s and 60s ...... in france its almost similar there too....because of their form judo is also old school

    When I trained Judo I was 15/16 years old. My grading was understanding the names of the throws and then performing them. I was graded at Orange 3 at that point for my knowledge. I then had to go to a tournament to fight others, however I was too heavy for the white belts there so had to fight yellow and orange I think, maybe just yellow. I won 3/4 fights and was given an orange belt with 2 tags. In BJJ it took me 2 years to get my blue which is about right. I am giving myself the target or 3 years to get my purple training 2/3 times a week depending on work.

    5 years average to judo black belt sounds new to me. I've never met anyone who took only 5 years. I'm from Sao Paulo and I got my black belt on 2002 after at least 8 years (I was 17 at the time). My brother started judo when he was 4 yo and trained for 11, 12 years (he decided to stop) and he s a brown belt. I think you re talking about a very specific reality (US, Canada?) and the average period of training to achieve black belt in judo varies depending on the country.

      For children the progression curve is different, because you're not supposed to learn or use elbow locks and constrictions until the age of 13 in most federations while some its 15, so from elementary school to junior high school Judo is exclusively throws and pins.

    Nice comparison of BJJs and Judo's way to blackbelt. Thanks for that.
    What I'm missing is that the systems differ from country to country and more important from Dojo to Dojo. I think that when you spoke about Judo, you spoke about the american way, right? I'm from Germany and we have a totally different way since we have "half-colored" (is this the right term???) belts.
    (white, white-yellow, yellow, yellow-orange, orange, orange-green, green, blue, brown, black)
    In my Dojo we do one exam per year. With the preparation phase (Kata & Tournaments) of two years for a 1st Dan this sums up to 11 years to reach the black belt.

    I've written about this before, it depends in IJF, I'd been doing Judo for yrs but I have a friend who been doing it religiously for 26yrs and he keeps failing his mid grades cos his bottle goes on the day and he keeps losing his fights and he stopped going to gradings at brown belt, he's a great fighter in the club and takes out many black belts but that's the way it goes,, here is the Dan grade requirements in BJA UK IJF which is the Olympic body.
    After completing your theory and kata requirements, you fight on top of that away from the club, in a sports centre with up to 6 mats depending. You need 100 points, each fight is 20 points. You have to win by minimum of submission, a hold down or a perfect throw, in other words an ippon. 5 brown belts who didn't get their Dan grade on the day face you, bow and four walk off. You fight one, if you win by anything other than an ippon it doesn't count, and the game is over, if you win by ippon within the 5 mins you get 1min rest, then the other brown belt comes on, each win has to be defeated with ippon to get your grade on the day, hence 100 points, if you fail to defeat even the fifth brown belt with ippon, even if you win, the game is over. After that you have to reach now 200 points and u cannot fight within three months. You then become as the other brown belts who faced you in three months time, you cannot fight for your Dan grade on the day, u only get one chance. But if you won four fights, that's eighty points against your 200,So then every fight you have from then on is against a brown belt trying to get his black belt, each win by ippon for you is then 20 points, they go toward your 200 and any fights you won by ippon on the day you took your black belt, also goes toward you 200 points.(in our case 80points, four fights). It's a great system imo and that's on top of what you see in this video which is your theory. What the system does is level out most fighters somewhere along the line, for example, if your a natural bruiser with ok tech,and you got your black belt on the day and fairly quickly say 5yrs, you will get held back for your second Dan because of the technical skill level finds you out, if you have fighters who failed there's on the day and took longer but cos of the extra experience, gained better technique and they will defeat you later on because of that. This is a broad brush explanation from when I was in the system 20 yrs ago. And every individual is different, some train much harder than others, some have a natural flair etc etc, BUT, I have a friend that's a great fighter but his nerve goes in crowds and with spectators, his club judo is beautiful but he's been doing judo for 20 plus yrs and still hasn't got his Dan grade, his bottle goes on the day cos we don't fight in our own club for gradings, we have to go away to sport centres where the bleachers are full, a bit like fighting in a stadium at the Olympics with three mats out. Now if your not an IJF club it may be different which this guy in this video sounds like he's not an IJF club,not that it matters so much but you shouldn't be taking you Dan grade in your club amongst people your used to fighting, it's not useful imo, fight fighters you don't know, it will end up giving you a broader skill set.

    it takes a lot longer than 5 years. I mean when you get your Brown Belt you'll take 2 years just on your Brown Belt alone but it is true in Judo Shodan is where you really start to learn in Judo. I think if Judo did what BJJ does which is have you spend 2 years on each belt then yeah you'll take 10 years. But there are many guys who obtained their BJJ Black Belts in 5 or 6 years and I think it's all about the money to keep you training and paying for all those years. In Judo not only we have to master all the throws but also have to master NeWaza grappling which in my opinion is a lot harder. for any BJJ guy who doesn't think so just go and train Judo and you'll see just hard it is

    I have practiced judo for over 20 years now. I got my black belt after the 10th year. I had won many competitions but nevertheless it took a lot of time to get my belt. For it i had to learn the kata and compete with 6 other strong black belts and win at least 4 matches. This were the conditions of my 5th dan sensei.

    My teacher is a bjj blackest and says it’s kind of the beginning but the gap between black belts is in teaching and experience and respect. Competitive black belts are the exception but a 3rd Dan black belt is a legit monster. 3rd Dan is what I consider mastery and ranks beyond it are honary and well deserved like inventing a new move or being the best teacher ever. I met a master 6th Dan and I know 9th Dan is the highest obtainable but it will go down as you can only rank 1 belt lower. Unless tradition changes they were talking about a blue bar instead of red bar for the stripes and stuff.

    Guys, 5 years judo is pretty typical.... when you compete regularly that is. But that's what judo has evolved into, a sport for competition. Bjj is evolving that way too. The biggest difference between judo and bjj isn't necessarily the ne waza differences, although despite a major lack of understanding from many is very big, but the environment which they are trained in. Due to rise of sport bjj that is changing drastically.

    You should clarify that you're talking about the US, and also beginning judo when you're an adult or teenager. In Japan, where I've lived and played judo for 26 years, you still go from white to black. And, other countries more serious about judo, like France tend to follow the Japanese traditions when it comes to promotion. There are very few dojos in Japan that have adopted western rankings of yellow, green, etc. Typically, you start in elementary school at about 5yrs of age and get shodan when you're in junior high, nidan in high school, and sandan in college. If you continue after that, then you're most likely to be hired by a corporate team and become a professional judo player. In Japan there are very few people that start judo as adults since most are introduced to the sport/art in gym class during grade school.

      Im going to make another video and clarify those points you mentioned and add a few things i recently learnt as well. Hey so how many years is between Elementary school, junior high, high school and college?

    • @TenonsTenors
      @TenonsTenors 3 роки тому

      @@OGFITNESS Elementary school is from age 5-12, 1st-6th grade in US terms, junior high is 7th-9th, and high school is 10th-12th. If a kid starts judo in 1st grade, like I did, they can get shodan as early as 8th grade (you have to be at least 13yrs of age regardless of school year). Obviously, if you only start playing at 12yrs, you're looking at several years before you can get shodan depending on how quickly you learn. As a side note...due to this "regularity" with promotion when you meet someone in Japan who is a sandan, you can assume they played into college. Anyone who is a yodan or higher most likely went pro meaning they were hired by a corporate team and actually got paid to play judo. That's the big difference between the US and Japan. My father was a rokudan in the USJA (USA Judo now, I think), but that was only because he spent his life teaching and had time-in-grade. Any rokudan in Japan was a professional judo player and as such has about 10 times as much experience as a typical rokudan in the US who just got promoted because they paid their annual dues. Sorry to sound cynical, I have a long history in the politics of judo in the US.

    I should say it can very from club to club, and coach to coach for example where I train it actually takes 10 years to get a Judo black belt. There are many reasons for this but I would say it's because the head coach feels people don't do enough Judo outside of places like Japan where it can take 2-3 years, and also has really high standards because he's an Olympic Judoka. But in my humble opinion realistically speaking that means that guys who reach black belt are realistically closer to 2nd dan level rather than 1st.

Many Kids start at 5years old and will have a white belt until they 15 years old and then subject to their skill level at that time will be given their Black Belt. If you start Judo after 15years of age you may get your Black belt in 12mths if you train hard and win enough shiai..

This is different I believe than other martial art black belt simply because there are countless techniques, combinations and permutations in bjj, and it's constantly evolving. So at Black, yes you have all the basics and then some. You know how to fight. Yes you're a "master", but there is so much more depth after the black belt. This is my experience.

    It depends a lot on where you´re training, it took me 8 years to get my black belt in judo (this year i was supposed to do my nidan, but stupid covid). I stayed in white belt for about a year and the i got promoted directly to orange (skipped yellow), I stayed in orange for about two years and then got propomed to blue (skipped green), stayed on blue belt another two years until i got my brown belt, and I stayed as a brown belt for three years. It is a lot of time considering the fact that i was training 2 times a day (4 hours total), from monday to friday, and one training session on saturdays, since my last year on orange belt. Btw, I used to train so much because I was selected by my state to compete nationally.
    But when I look back I´m really grateful that it took me 8 years of really hard training, learning and studying (I also had to take courses and written exams), I wouldn´t like to be a crappy black belt who knows nothing and still got the shodan just because I payed my monthly tuition (Judo is free here, you only pay for the exams, and the black belt exam in held by an Invited 8th dan).

    The beginning had me laughing hard. It's SO true about BJJ. You have a couple of belts & 16,057 stripes for EACH one! 🤣 It seems you go nowehere real fast. As for HOW you get to the next stripe or belt wellllllll .... thats where I disagree with you, just a little bit. I think it's honestly based on what the coach is partial to. I am incrediblly busy, so I personally go 1-2 times per week & only have 1 stripe on my white belt. Its been there a while, yet I STILL keep folding people who have 3 or 4 stripes. So I guess where I am at, they're not really focused on "if you can fight" as much as "how many of OUR BJJ techniques do you use IN a fight & do you know our terms we use?" To put in context here, I DO have other martial arts under my belt, but they are srtiking forms. In those, naturally, with the amount of belts you progress faster, but in the others, I also never really met a coach that seemed more fixated on "the dance" rather than being able to win an actual fight. Evem if you struggled with certain moves, if you're a beast to mess with, you're a beast! My experience with BJJ so far is that, while the coach we have is excellent at teaching no doubt, I feel there is a "competition world" obsession. In BJJ competitions vs striking martial arts competitions, it seems again, there is an obsession with techniques & the question of "is that a full pass?" when earning points. To use BJJ in a real fight outside of a dojo or off-the-mat, no one will ask "is that a full pass?" & then suddenly you get points & that determines if you won the fight. For me, that has been the harder adjustment to make from striking forms to now a grappling one.

Every tournament I was always in my own weight class and also in another bumped up one weight and also in black belt division, so got pretty used to just finishing a match and already Another mat waiting for me to show up immediately. I have trained for 10 years now in BJJ and when I travel I carry my gi and rash guard in case there is a cool local gym to drop in on. In my short martial arts career I have learned that there is always more to learn and the anyone whom says they know it all is full of BS. There are few "masters" and I'd argue a black belt is akin to earning a doctorate but like a doctorate it's up to the practionor to further their knowledge. Get black belts in several martial arts, that makes you a master. IMO.

But I was consistently throwing green belts with just an ouchi gari and phasing equally with blue belts with simple techniques. I did have to learn tons of the intricacies of kuzushi but my competitive sense was there.
      Not the norm but my club dedicates time to standup as my teacher did judo but it’s hugely varied in skill. Still pretty bad in judo terms. I know some gyms where black belt stand up is worse than mine when I was a white belt by just pulling guard.

    The standing game is incredibly more subtle than the ground game. Not resisting the opponent, noticing gaps in his balance, exploiting them correctly etc take much longer to master than groundwork.
    It's a shame that many judo clubs give brown and black belts to people with only 3-5 years of training.
