Not necessarily. Go-phones (month to month) phones don’t require contracts. I have an AT&T monthly plan, and other carriers also offer plans. Downside: you usually have to pay for your phone outright and you don’t get unlimited data plans. I currently pay $40/mth for unlimited talk and text, plus 15GB data from AT&T. There are other companies that offer similar type plans. So IF you can afford to pay for your own phone and plan, you don’t need a contract.

@@LadyCheshire95 Not quite. Unfortunately for minors the law for parents is what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine. I looked it up on one of those ask a lawyer sites, and all the responses said that even without a contract and you pay for everything, your parents are still allowed to take your phone.
Now if it’s a situation where you live with parent A and step-parent and parent B buys you a phone, they can’t because technically they’re stealing from parent B. It doesn’t matter if you live 50% or 60% or 90% of the time with A and step.
On the non-law sites the answers were wild.
