Usually you just need a good metal punch for making the pilot hole for the hole saw. Also if you use an electric drill it costs these way faster without as much trouble. Oil. Always cover the bit with oil for even quicker cutting. There are a thousand of these welds in a car. Good job. Especially for the first time ever doing it. Kudos

I haven't done a floor, but I have watched DD Speed Shop's videos and he only cuts out the bad material. He said he watched another Tuber replace a section and he said it worked real slick. I think it was 429 Mustangs or something like that.

Dude, this project brings back memories!!! I had a 1977 LT that I bought in high school in 1983 that only had 21,000 miles on it for $3500. The original owner only drove it on week ends as both him and his wife worked for a dealership and got to drive different cars every day, so the car was in showroom condition when I got it. The jack and spare were STILL wrapped in factory plastic that's how pristine she was. It had a factory aluminum block 305 w/a 4 barrel and factory duel exhausts and every option available except A/C. Being 16, I hot prodded the engine (had it bored and rebuilt into a 334 Rat motor, had the tranny tuned and suspension tightened and lifted, and had racing tires (Goodyear Eagle GTs) on Craiger rims, a 700 watt sound system installed, windows tinted and a few other things. In total, with purchase, I put another $4000 into her. She looked about 90% stock, but was a serious 'sleeper'. I actually had it dynoed and ran her at a local drag strip and she was putting out 693hp and would run a quarter mile at 126mph in the low 12s. Like a typical teenaged gear head, I used to street race her at the local race road and was only beat twice, once by a kid driving a foreign junk box, and another time when the kid I was racing got a little reckless and tried giving me a bumper tap as I pulled ahead so I let him go. Besides that....I took better care of her than anything else I ever owned. The night she "died"....I was on my way to pick up my girlfriend (at the time, wife since 1989) and I was rounding a fairly tight right hand curve and a drunk guy in a 1980 Olds Delta 88 came around on my side of the road and the rest was history. His frony bumper slid over mine and the engine ended up practically thrown out of the car and thank God I was wearing my seatbelt. They didn't have to cut me out of the car, again, thank you God, but the car was almost destroyed. I broke 3 ribs and had numerous cuts/bruises. The guy in the Olds....not a scratch! When I was finally able to, I started trying to rebuild her. She had bad frame damage and a local body shop was just barely able to fix it. It took almost 2 yrs to get her drivable again, but she was never the same. She rattled, drifted, all kinds of problems. Then, on me & the wife's 2nd wedding anniversary, the tranny literally 'exploded' in my parent's driveway. It broke my heart, like loosing a family member, but, we decided it was time to let her go and she was parted out over the next few months. Recently, my 15 yr old son has been hinting about getting a project car, and after seeing your videos and a few other '77 rebuild/restore vids, we decided to find a '77 LT to rebuild. Thank you for retiring my love for the 1977 Camaro LT. Hopefully we will find one worth redoing soon.

Wow what an amazing sad story! Thank the Lord you walked away from that accident with only minor cuts and bruises and a few broken ribs. It’s super frustrating how drunk people can be and it’s absolutely ridiculous how someone’s bad decision can impact others. Hope you find a 77 to work with your son on. I know right after I got mine, the prices of these went through the roof. I got this one just in time I feel because it’s almost impossible to find a decent 2nd gen at a reasonable price! Either way, when you do get your project car, will you be making great memories with your son and it will make it even more special than the one you had! Good luck on the hunt and thank you for sharing your story with me 😊

@@BackyardGarage1 yeah, the Type LT is hard to find. Did you find the factory build sheet when you stripped out the interior? It's kind of a list or blue print for each car on the assembly line listing what accessories or options the individual car is supposed to have. Usually, after the car was completed, it was put under the left rear seat between the springs and padding. I found the one for my '77 when we (wife helped and did she ever get her hands dirty, lol) removed the seats when we were putting it back together after the accident. (We ripped out the interior and replaced the rugs and padding and to repair a hole in the back seat tranny hump). At first, I didn't know what it was, but it is a valuable piece of paperwork if it is a show car. It also lists some interesting info, like production number, production line # and plant, time/date the car was started and finished being built, every option, inspector, special order parts, FACTORY part numbers, and also hand written notes. Usually they are ripped, faded, ect from age and stuff but mine was in pretty good condition. One of my neighbors, who collects 1960s era muscle cars (he has 4, 2 Roadrunners, a '67 Mustang and a '67 Firebird and is really into showing them off at car shows told me that piece of paper actually adds collector value to the car. True? I don't know). I laminated and framed it and it is still on the wall above my desk in my home office next to an 8x10 picture of the car with my girlfriend (wife since 1989) posing on the hood in a bathing suit when she was 17. Besides her and our kids and grandson, that car was my only serious "love". It's amazing how an inanimate object like a car can be such an important part of a guy's life, ya know? My sons (15 & 21) think I'm crazy but they are kids, lol. If ya want, when and if I find one with restoring, I'll let ya know. Good luck with your project. Looks great so far. Oh, forgot..acc to the build sheet, my LT was built in the Van Nuys California plant, and was started on March 15th, 1977. It was built on assembly line #6 and had option package #C-LT 22, plus 7 optional accessories, including the 305 engine with an aluminum block. The car was production #52 out of 4691 built that year in that plant (a low number!!) And "per customer order..no air conditioning". It was completed on March 19th and was shipped to the dealer (in Waterbury, Ct) on March 24th for "dealer finishing". Talk about a 'wealth of car history'.

I will be doing the same thing you are right now on my 78 model. There is not much different from your car to mine. Mainly the front end.

When making lap joints n panels never make them more than 1/2 inch. They are bad about collecting moisture years later. And rusting! Also weld thru primer only works for the weld area. It’s not a good sealer so you don’t need it sprayed all over the panels. It won’t hold paint or undercoating very well. Great for making welds however. So actually the correct way to do this panel is to butt weld the entire thing. It’s way harder and requires more time and skill yet there is way less chance of rust and causing more rust later in. Seam sealer will help you here and you will need to push it deep into all the overlapping seams heavily!!!

That’s great advice and looking back, should have done that route. Was so scared of ruining it where I couldn’t fix it.
