The coolest thing about this demo Carl, is that you can talk about SO many other zeppelin tunes in this same maner.... The Genius of James Patrick Page. His time as a studio musician taught him so much, probably especially how to improvise so many chords and voicing's. Angles, marrying different structures to form almost new sounds, especially one's never tried with blues based rock and roll.. No to mention the many tunings that he used over the years..
Rock music at this level is pure art. Listening to Carl explaining the structure and the emotions flowing out of this song reminds me of visiting impressionism collections in Paris and New York. Jimmy Page is, in my opinion, the Claude Monet of rock guitar and his musicianship will be studied in art schools. Thank you so much for the passion and competence you put in these videos. The varied moods between the lovely acoustic guitar figure that soon gives way to a powerfully memorable riff. This reminds me of just why Led Zeppelin is justifiably considered one of the greatest Rock & Roll Bands of all time.
I’m totally binging on your videos and there’s is so much there that just grabs me and speaks to me, but, but, but, when you showed how the ramble on riff needs to be continued to be feathered when amped up, well really spoke to me showing the beauty of the song and the music.
I bought my first Zeppelin album in 69. It was actually an 8-track and I was 11 years old. Personally I thought there was something to it. Most people were still listening to The Beatles And whatever was on the radio. I wish I truly wish I would have had someone to help me learn how to play music then. I can see how much fun you're having Carl and I'm happy for you I just wish I could join you but I never got the kick in the pants or the opportunity or surrounded by people that were interested in music none of my family did anything but listen to records. It's unfortunate but even at 64 years old I still love this band and I'm thrilled that someone puts as much time into it as you are. They got a bad rep when in reality they are incredible musicians each and every one of them. Keep it up I'm having a blast!

Love this. I’ve been playing for 50 years or so, but I’ve never really gotten past intermediate ability as a player. I’ve always gripped the neck too tight, but your musings on Ramble On, and your beautiful playing, really made the point that less can be more. I think I’m going to spend a week or a month or so playing this song along with your video and trying to get a much lighter grip on the neck and feathery picking down. This video could make a huge impact on my playing. This is probably one of the most inspirational videos I’ve seen to make me think about how I’m playing my guitar, and I so appreciate it. Cheers!

Another winning video, Carl! It's amazing how inventive and creative Pagey was during this period - all while touring incessantly and living the rock and roll lifestyle. Just curious - have you considered doing these types of vids with other guitarists? Not that i could ever tire of Zeppelin content... but i'd very much like to hear you breakdown some other artists' music as well - maybe Hendrix?
"Ah Sometimes I grow so tired, but I know, I got one thing I got to do" then IT drops, just like "Bring It On Home" Jimmy definitely knew that FM radio, and American Arenas would be massive events which would bring the Zeppelin Punch to the world. I completely agree with you on relaxation while playing. I really worked on that a decade ago, until I could play 10 minutes without tiring. Going back to the Acoustic really underscores the lightness of touch necessary to play the electric. I suppose now you will have to break down the solo in "Dazed And Confused" Thanks Carl

I really love your videos. You dig into the nuance and dynamics, the subtle finesse underlying the raw power. Light and shade. The entire foundation of the IDEA of Led Zeppelin, the oft copied(poorly) blueprint for a classic Zep song....lulling intro, dreamy...then BAM! Heavy riff. Hair bands in the 80s WISHED they could effortlessly mimic it, but Zep epitomized it. You nailed this.
It’s his beauty of phrasing. You could call it a game, but I see it as beauty and recreating of the mood of any phrase. I’m novice and I really appreciate you pointing this out.
Great work Carl, thanks again! I actually read somewhere that bonzo was tapping a guitar Case for that verse percussion. Also in my opinion the drums coming in leading with the snare before the chorus is ridiculous!!! Like you said about the two hits on the snare leading into the "chorus" on bring it on home. They tended to bring bonzo in later in the songs to give it all more effect. Keep rockin! ✌️😊

Another great vid... I have used that same technique over the years... Tim Pierce makes a great point that you pick lightly to get a big sound and you demonstrate that perfectly.. One of the other key elements is relaxing and breathing easy... This is one of my fave Zep tunes and I could list a gazillion reasons why... Whats great about this medium is going back and relearning things some of us may have missed along the way..... Kudos!

I have to agree with the other comments on this page. You do an outstanding job of explaining the brilliance of Led Zeppelin's music. A competent, thoughtful critique of the musical/technical aspects. Along with an enthusiastic and rational - meaning not too flighty - translation of the mystical and dramatic aspects of the band that made them so great as a whole.
A drummer (I’ve played with over the years) and myself are seeing if we can pull together a duo doing some eclectic stuff. This is one we are working on. I’m able to pull off the verses on guitar and sing too.. but that pre chorus is like hitting a wall for me. Thanks for the lesson!
Something I would LOVE to see besides all the Zep II content (which has been wonderful) is a look into how some of their songs changed from studio to live. Dazed and Confused for example, a six minute song in the studio, but what eventually became a 30-40 minute behemoth.
I’ve been thinking about that for quite some time. I’m still framing it up in my mind because it’s so interesting. It’s one of the things that really distinguishes LZ and Page specifically!
Funny I was just watching Jimmy Page Ramble on (It might get loud) and found your video. I like the way Page plays this, lots of feel. The part you play starting at 14:00 is very addicting and if you listen to the song at 2: 36 you can hear him picking and strumming. Just beautiful. Thank you for doing this video, it is so helpful.

If you'll allow me a story...I came to rock and roll age when my brother gave me Diary of a Madman for Christmas when I was 12. I loved it. Mostly because my big brother gave it to me. Before that I had fat laces in my Adidas and really liked break dancing! But I was raised in the back of my mom's VM bug listening to Fleetwood Mac and Franki Valli and all the 70s soft rock stuff. So that gave me a soft spot for music, even after the likes of Ozzy took over. I was exposed to Led Zeppelin soon after that, and I remember being so happy that there was this band that could make me feel the way Ozzy's music did, and on the next song make me feel like a Franki Valli song...carrying my first 'girlfriend's' books home from school. at 9 years old :-) They just did it all. And I have not heard another band do it as well as they did since. If I had to pick a band that came close, I guess it would be Pearl Jam. Of course there are lots of other talents out there that I respect and love. Rush and Jane's Addiction are the first that come to mind. But Led Zeppelin, man...that band can make an Atheist think mystically. Cheers!
Nice tip on the pre-chorus, fingerstyle electric part, especially to play on a single guitar. Totally hear the Emaj7 too, and it really sets apart from the E chord to start the next stanza on the acoustic bed track.
It’s such a gorgeous piece and tricky to get all of the scene changes live on an electric guitar like he does! Please share with others who might appreciate this!
Carl, Nice breakdown here. Page is known for always changing chords patterns so I learned in the Verse, you can use a basic E-Form on the 14th, down to the 12 fret, then A- Asus4 ( not bar form ). Try it as its a cool change.

Ledzeppelinbybaldassarre.com …Regarding the guitar tone: I’m playing through my ‘72 Les Paul into a Bognar Lagrange pedal into my black face fender deluxe reverb amp. I’ll sometimes pre boost the Lagrange pedal with my Spark gain pedal. But the general key to Jimmy Page’s tone: it’s never as “gained up” as you think. He almost never oversaturates his sounds with pedal gain. If you’re using a gain pedal, dial in the gain you like and then roll it back a good amount and you’ll be closer to Page. So much is also coming from the amp input and amp structure as well as the humbuckers. And he’s also able to get more “gain” by not squeezing the fingerboard to death. Try it. You’ll be surprised how much cleaner your gain is if you pull back from unnecessary finger tension! If you want more info just hit me back!! Peace!!
I've been playing a three pickup Gibson Les Paul custom SG for the past thirty-five years so I almost never slam on my strings. I been dying for a burst Les Paul. I had an Epiphone Les Paul that I bought to not beat on my Gibson, but didn't play it a lot because the Gibson just feels and sounds so much better. Unfortunately the Epi was stolen. Love your custom that you used on the Ten Years Gone video. That thing is gorgeous.

I've been playing guitar since 1975 and I can play several LZ songs. But this one has always caused me to pull my hair out. Thank you again for your input. Cant pick which one i like most because it are all different eras of the band. But the setlist of the 1977 shows are just stunning with achilles last stand for example. I really love your videos. You dig into the nuance and dynamics, the subtle finesse underlying the raw power. Light and shade. The entire foundation of the IDEA of Led Zeppelin, the oft copied(poorly) blueprint for a classic Zep song....lulling intro, dreamy...then BAM! Heavy riff. Hair bands in the 80s WISHED they could effortlessly mimic it, but Zep epitomized it. You nailed this.

Great work Carl, thanks again! I actually read somewhere that bonzo was tapping a guitar Case for that verse percussion. Also in my opinion the drums coming in leading with the snare before the chorus is ridiculous!!! Like you said about the two hits on the snare leading into the "chorus" on bring it on home. They tended to bring bonzo in later in the songs to give it all more effect. Keep rockin! ✌️😊

Another great vid... I have used that same technique over the years... Tim Pierce makes a great point that you pick lightly to get a big sound and you demonstrate that perfectly.. One of the other key elements is relaxing and breathing easy... This is one of my fave Zep tunes and I could list a gazillion reasons why... Whats great about this medium is going back and relearning things some of us may have missed along the way..... Kudos!

A competent, thoughtful critique of the musical/technical aspects. A drummer (I’ve played with over the years) and myself are seeing if we can pull together a duo doing some eclectic stuff. This is one we are working on. I’m able to pull off the verses on guitar and sing too.. but that pre chorus is like hitting a wall for me. Thanks for the lesson!
Something I would LOVE to see besides all the Zep II content (which has been wonderful) is a look into how some of their songs changed from studio to live. Dazed and Confused for example, a six minute song in the studio, but what eventually became a 30-40 minute behemoth.
I’ve been thinking about that for quite some time. I’m still framing it up in my mind because it’s so interesting. It’s one of the things that really distinguishes LZ and Page specifically!
Funny I was just watching Jimmy Page Ramble on (It might get loud) and found your video. I like the way Page plays this, lots of feel. The part you play starting at 14:00 is very addicting and if you listen to the song at 2: 36 you can hear him picking and strumming. Just beautiful. Thank you for doing this video, it is so helpful.

Hard to choose but Ramble On is one of my go to Zeppelin songs. “Playing without tension… power in letting go….beautiful sounds come from beautiful motion” I’m not a musician but I love music and can here what you’re saying in Jimmy’s guitar playing and JPJ’s bass as well.

I love your breakdowns of these songs - so much insights. I think I have to agree with Rick Biato here in Atlanta - this single song is the best written and produced song in all of contemporary music!
If you'll allow me a story...I came to rock and roll age when my brother gave me Diary of a Madman for Christmas when I was 12. I loved it. Mostly because my big brother gave it to me. Before that I had fat laces in my Adidas and really liked break dancing! But I was raised in the back of my mom's VM bug listening to Fleetwood Mac and Franki Valli and all the 70s soft rock stuff. So that gave me a soft spot for music, even after the likes of Ozzy took over.
I was exposed to Led Zeppelin soon after that, and I remember being so happy that there was this band that could make me feel the way Ozzy's music did, and on the next song make me feel like a Franki Valli song...carrying my first 'girlfriend's' books home from school. at 9 years old :-)
They just did it all. And I have not heard another band do it as well as they did since.
If I had to pick a band that came close, I guess it would be Pearl Jam. Of course there are lots of other talents out there that I respect and love. Rush and Jane's Addiction are the first that come to mind. But Led Zeppelin, man...that band can make an Atheist think mystically.

Nice tip on the pre-chorus, fingerstyle electric part, especially to play on a single guitar. Totally hear the Emaj7 too, and it really sets apart from the E chord to start the next stanza on the acoustic bed track.

Carl, Nice breakdown here. Page is known for always changing chords patterns so I learned in the Verse, you can use a basic E-Form on the 14th, down to the 12 fret, then A- Asus4 ( not bar form ). Try it as its a cool change.

During my time off I’m actually bringing my Led Zeppelin II revival concert to the stage. My first show is tomorrow! Ledzeppelinbybaldassarre.com …Regarding the guitar tone: I’m playing through my ‘72 Les Paul into a Bognar Lagrange pedal into my black face fender deluxe reverb amp. I’ll sometimes pre boost the Lagrange pedal with my Spark gain pedal. But the general key to Jimmy Page’s tone: it’s never as “gained up” as you think. He almost never oversaturates his sounds with pedal gain. If you’re using a gain pedal, dial in the gain you like and then roll it back a good amount and you’ll be closer to Page. So much is also coming from the amp input and amp structure as well as the humbuckers. And he’s also able to get more “gain” by not squeezing the fingerboard to death. Try it. You’ll be surprised how much cleaner your gain is if you pull back from unnecessary finger tension! If you want more info just hit me back!! Peace!!

I've been playing a three pickup Gibson Les Paul custom SG for the past thirty-five years so I almost never slam on my strings. I been dying for a burst Les Paul. I had an Epiphone Les Paul that I bought to not beat on my Gibson, but didn't play it a lot because the Gibson just feels and sounds so much better. Unfortunately the Epi was stolen. Love your custom that you used on the Ten Years Gone video. That thing is gorgeous.

I've been playing guitar since 1975 and I can play several LZ songs. But this one has always caused me to pull my hair out. Thank you again for your input. Cant pick which one i like most because it are all different eras of the band. But the setlist of the 1977 shows are just stunning with achilles last stand for example.
