This is one of greatest songs Iris has ever written. She exposes a whole lot of things that are going wrong in this country. Thank God that somebody has the courage to sing songs like this. Her contribution exceeds the political rage of Neil Young on Living With War. Don't back down Iris.
And folk singer, Joan Baez before her, started in the 1960's with standing up for her beliefs and traveled to Viet Nam, March on Washington and joined Martin Luther King and so many more singing so many protest songs.
haven't listened to this for a while....now sitting here blinking back the tears at what this nation has devolved into....vs. what it COULD be. thanks iris for telling it like it is, and thanks for posting this.
"poor people are treated like the enemy" what a song! Thanks to Michael Moore I discovered Iris DeMent and her music. I am completely taken with her and her music. Mr. Moore included this song as a part of his preparation for the mid-term elections on 8 Nov 2022.
Let alone the best protest song of the 20th century, this is, truly, the best analysis of of our social crisis. It's power - its proof - is just how fresh each indictment sounds in 2013.
May 8, 2022 ... this is the first time I have ever heard this song. Listening to it makes my heart ache. All the same, this song inspires me to be better in every way.
iris is awesome i have had the oppertunity to see her twice and i will go again if given the chance her songs are straight from the gut and right through the heart love her love her love her
You've captured an amazing moment there... & I for one appreciate you sharing this incredible lady's amazing talent for us to see. It would be a special thing to see her sing live. Thanks for sharing...
Truth sayer! I say Amen sista!!!! Standing up for what you believe in many of our ancestors died for us to have this right and we shall keep it! After all true democracy is speaking up for what you believe in that's American!
Applaud Iris's bravery - would imagine some of the venues she has played would not be too receptive to the sentiments of this song, even though victims of the culture she is pinpointing would abound
I didn't care much for this tune when I first listened to it. That was a bunch of years ago. Now I listen to it once more, hear the lyrics and try to understand them. She's just about hit the nail on the head. Too many slime buckets in high places.
It's a wonderful song and she performs it with real conviction. Iris loves her country but she's clearly unhappy about aspeacts of American society. Nothing wrong with putting those sentiments into a song. A good song too.
Great song.. and a very appropriate time for it as Occupy Wall Street is in the news daily.. Our nation spends more on military than every other nation in the world COMBINED. And that is without a Soviet threat anymore. We have military bases all over the globe.. Protecting our Allies.. While our allies in Europe get free health care and we have 50 million without healthcare. Folks losing homes.. Banks with record profits.. Ms Dement is right on!
I agree. Thanks for uploading this. I heard a radio show about Iris's new album while riding the Rail Runner train in New Mexico last fall. I found them for myself, but could you upload the lyrics to this since you are the uploader? Thanks!
Verse five from the recording: We got high school kids running around in Calvin Klein and Guess, who cannot pass a sixth grade written test; but if you ask them, they can tell you the name of every crotch on MTV, living in the wasteland of the free.////I Googled "use trademark in song lyric" and I guess you can't, if your intention is to refer to the branded product. Example given: you can use "face" and "book" in your lyrics but not "facebook".
I first heard this song on NPR, this month. I guess I'm kind of out of the loop. If it had been banned on NPR, I couldn't have heard it there. It seems to me it would have just had the spots bleeped out that were objectionable, but they played everything.
This song needs to be "reborn". ✌
Iris Dement is the best! Love her genuine voice! She addresses the tuth

As a Jewish American, I ask does this include the IDF's killing 20,000 Palestinians on our tax dollars. Or is everyone just afraid to speak out?
And think when she sang it.
And folk singer, Joan Baez before her, started in the 1960's with standing up for her beliefs and traveled to Viet Nam, March on Washington and joined Martin Luther King and so many more singing so many protest songs.
Nov 4, 2020...Almost a quarter of a century since Iris wrote this song. How sad that this is still our real national anthem all these years later.
So true
This land is your land, this land is my land.
July 4, 2022 and things have headed further south from there..
haven't listened to this for a while....now sitting here blinking back the tears at what this nation has devolved into....vs. what it COULD be. thanks iris for telling it like it is, and thanks for posting this.
With ya man
Iris DeMent speaks truth with her music. Haunting and beautiful. I hope I can see her live someday.
This left me speechless when I first heard it back when it came out. Still totally relevant. Iris is a gift to the world.
NOBODY SOUNDS THAT GOOD LIVE...SHE IS AMAZING.

THE QUALITY OF THIS VIDEO IS AWESOME!
This song is, for me, even more relevant now than it was 15 years ago. I would like to believe that a day will come when it is totally irrelevant.
You've captured an amazing moment there... & I for one appreciate you sharing this incredible lady's amazing talent for us to see. It would be a special thing to see her sing live. Thanks for sharing...

Love you, Lady Iris!
Iris the the Queen of the American Dream
There is pain in her voice...
Thank you, Saiint Iris
So true...I will add though that were you to write and perform this in some countries of the world you would probably disappear...
Applaud Iris's bravery - would imagine some of the venues she has played would not be too receptive to the sentiments of this song, even though victims of the culture she is pinpointing would abound

Should have hit the nail on the head the 1st time you heard her

Amazing!
the rich won't rest till they take us all down in the process and that WON'T happen, God have mercy lest they all suffer damnation. Love lives!
We need to bring back the old Eat the Rich bumper stickers and t-shirts
Sadly, this song is more fitting now than when I first heard it.
Boy, you've got that right !!
@@checkyoursix5623 Trump Won! How are those gas prices treating you, commie!
So true and very sad, only other artist as prophetic as this is Loudon Wainwright 1985 song...Hard Day on The Planet...
Preciosa melodía y letra te adoro iris ese es la mejor❤

Blew my mind! Second only to her version of "Wayfaring Stranger."
Go Iris, go Iris!
Damn, I was there but another stage. This is such a great set
Damm and double damm
Absolutely 💯 perfect 🥰
It's a wonderful song and she performs it with real conviction. Iris loves her country but she's clearly unhappy about aspeacts of American society. Nothing wrong with putting those sentiments into a song. A good song too.
Bravo!!!
Rebirth of the protest song.
What a brave brilliant beautiful woman.
Back in the 90s I was in the back yard cooking a hog until I heard Iris on the radio my life changed at that very moment. Love ya sis
I wish someone would add Gulf photos as this song is sung. Indeed its Wasteland of the Free there.
Patriotic dissent is a luxury of those protected by better men than they.
Truth sayer! I say Amen sista!!!!
Adoro a esta compositora desde que la descubri por casualidad.Impresionante
Same as in england unless you have money you are treated like rubbish

Sing on Lady Iris.

Wonderful song from a wonderful singer - thanks for sharing, though at the start I thought you’d strapped your camera to an excitable Labrador.

I wish someone would make a picture video showing whats happened as she sings and plays this very factual Song.
Going to see her tonight at ST 94
