Caught in the Middle of a Flashflood in Kaokoland, NAMIBIA // EP.54

  • We are so happy to be finally going to the desert in Namibia.We are in the northwest of Namibia, also called Kaokoland. This is one of the wildest and least populated regions in Namibia, the Land of the Himba.
    We are going to try to get from Opuwo to Orupembe through the D3707. the weather was beautiful when we started until it wasn't anymore. Big showers pass by our route discharging water in the whole valley. And the place turns into an ice rink and we start struggling to get through. This challenges our Offroading skills, big time.
    We were not aware of the magnitude until later. And realized we were in the middle of a Flashflood. We had to get out and drive fast to cross the Hoarusib River before it got too big. Three river crossings in the Kaokoland, three rivers to walk and check before crossing.
    An adventure in Namibia. Enjoy the Ride!

      Namibia is a paradise! And if you come in the wet season, you have a chance if seeing Etosha green and rain in the desert like we had! The bluelandy had a serious workout with all that drifting! So happy to have a Landy, yeah 💪💪💪

    Not sure if you realise how lucky you were with the rain but in many trps to Kaokoland I have never experienced so much water. Its a true blessing- And a really good video for those of us who have been there or live here. AWESOME.

      We do! We were really shocked when we arrived in the valley. The sky was blue all the way from Etosha to Opuwo. You could see how long it had been dry! Btw others would tell you we were the opposite of lucky, but we agree with you, for us we were at the right place at the right time. 😅😱

    Wow so extraordinary. It appears to be sooo remote. Just wondered if the Blue Landy has a winch for extracting you from obstacles? Also seems you are getting very economical fuel consumption? Great work and beautiful videography…(-;

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  11 місяців тому

      It is really remote, and it is and we say in the title, wild. It is one of the last really untouched places on this planet. The only traces you find from humans are corrugations. No winch, we decided against it (too heavy and too expensive). We have driven 50.000 km, and we always were able to get ourselves out of travel with the rest of our recovery gear and most iof the time winch would not have helped, as in these slippery paths or in deep sand in Saudi Arabia. Our consumption is really good, we average at the moment 10L/100km. Thank you for your comment and support!

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for the hint!
      I believe there are two options on this topic. There is the theory to not move the searing wheel to not ask more from the already struggling tires.
      And on the other hand there is the theory that you should move it to allow to search for grip….
      I guess both technics do not work in all situations but in others they do. So you gotta try what works when.

      Hey! because we didn't reduce the tyre pressure enough and the place was super slippery. With lower pressure or mud terrains it would have been easier!

    Guys tyre pressures. You should be down around 22psi not hwy pressure

      Hey Luke, as you can see in the end of episode 53, I did drop the tire pressure, as we always do on gravel. Yeah we could have stopped in the middle of the muddy plain and dropped the pressure even further. But our priority was to get out and to higher an dry ground before we waste more time. We didn’t know if there was more water coming.
      We were never really stuck in this situation, therefore the pressure was not an issue, trust me I drove this car with this tires in a lot of situations. And if they are clocked up with mud they get slippery no matter the pressure.

    That is some nerve wreaking driving you had to do.

      Ouh yeah, sliding side to side on water is not something one does everyday with a Defender. 😂

    Maybe your tyre pressures were too high?

      They were, indeed! we did put them a bit down once we left tarmac, but not enough for these conditions! this and how slippery this place gets with water, was the reason for the extreme drifting session

      @@Thebluelandy - I was wondering but you guys were giving me heart palpitations given you had no support vehicles and I was wondering just how bad the flash flood was going to get. Great video and I’d love to visit Namibia. 💪❤️

    The man who drives seems so dis interested in the ride. He actually seems bored in most of the episodes.

      Hey, I’m not sure what you expect? We spent a lot of time in the car driving, 57k km in 14 months and it’s not comfortable. But I still enjoy driving and watching the scenery every km…
