- Founded in 2015 as the spirits arm of Purple Wine + Spirits, Graton Distilling Company first launched the owner’s D. George Benham’s Sonoma Dry Gin in early 2016, then a vodka, then followed by
Redwood Empire American Whiskey in September 2017.
Now Redwood Empire is back with three new expressions which all collectively replace the original Redwood Empire. Announced in November of 2019, three uniquely hand-crafted, barrel aged, California whiskeys: “Pipe Dream” Bourbon, “Emerald Giant” Rye, and ”Lost Monarch. All three whiskeys are select blends of aged whiskeys between 4-12 years and sport new labels inspired by California’s most iconic conservationist, John Muir. Today we taste all three and see which ones are worth checking out. Enjoy!

Lost monarch is so damn good. I can’t get enough of it.
They need to start making these in the big handle bottles!!! Sooo good!
That lost monarch is one of my favs!! Thank u for doing this review. Sorry I missed this one when u released it
I'm excited to try these! I'm a California kid, so it's cool to see something that's bottled here. Thank you for spotlighting these!
This is definitely an interesting set, I’ve never seen them before. You’re right, the bottles are beautiful. Cool story and I like that it has a component of giving back with the tree planting. That’s kind of cool. Nice review
Love the uniqueness of all three of these bottles. I recently bought the Cask Strength Pipe Dream. It is really good. I have heard that the Redwood Empire Cask Strength is really amazing.
Just got lost monarch and emerald giant delivered to me today. Pipe dream is next. Excellent review Jason. Cheers!
Great review as always Jason! Will see if I can find any of these at a bar!
I loved the Lost Monarch. Looking forward to checking out the other two!
Just in past week tried the Pipe Dream for 33.00 in Ohio. I give this bourbon a solid A Very enjoyable sipper with deep lasting notes and great complexity for a younger bourbon. I Like it a lot and will continue to purchase
I'll be looking for this on my travels
I really like this review format, Jason. Great job!! 🥃😁
Thanks Christine. Trying to up my game. Lol thanks for helping me with the list monarch. My favorite!
Great review as always, that Lost Monarch sounds like a really nice pour. Haven't seen any of it around here in Wisconsin, Cheers Maverick!
A local bar gave me a pour of Pipe Dream on the house. I was drinking Bakers and it held up against 107 pretty good. He said it was under $30 in the stores. I went to my local store and could only find Lost Monarch and Emerald Giant. They were price 29.99 each. For the price they are great drinkers. A little light on flavor, but I don’t drink a lot of 90 proofers. At first I liked the rye better. Now that the Lost Monarch has opened up for a couple weeks I really like it. I could see $40 being a little high. @ $30 it’s a good drink to throw into the daily rotation.
I went to a big tasting in late 2019 and pipe dream was one of the major standouts. I had never heard of them and i really enjoyed what they had.
Just popped open a bottle of Pipe Dream that a few buddies dropped off. It's a solid little sipper.
Lost Monarch is everyone’s favorite. Definitely mine.
Nice one!
I rarely drink any whiskey that's not 100 proof or stronger but that lost monarch was a flavor bomb for a 90 proofer. Picked one up last night after seeing it on the shelf and on videos for the last few months. It's 36.99 at my local liquor store in Mansfield Texas. Only bad part about it, it's almost too easy to drink I might have enjoyed it a bit more than I should have last night.
Great info!
Pipe Dream is such an easy sipper. I drink it in Cali all the time. Finally found a bottle in Colorado. Drinking it as I watch this! Thanks for saying it doesn’t taste like Dickel at all :)
Agree! New and big fan of the Pipe Dream
Love the lost monarch. Fits my taste so well.
Was easily my favorite!
I agree. The rye comes in 2nd. Pipe for 3rd. All around my fav brand of 2022
This stuff is everywhere out here. Local grocery store had Pipe Dream for $26 so I grabbed it. Now I guess I’ll have to open it and see. Nice review.
Paid $140 Aussie yesterday. About $90USD in Sydney
I really like this brand 😊
Very tasty juice
Found these in San Jose for $28,00 ea. Love the Rye, very smooth, to each their own - cheers!
That's a great price. My local big box, Bevmo, sells this for $50. Hard pass for me for $60 after taxes
You can find it in Florida...just opened a Lost Monarch and a Pipe Dream
I found the Pipe Dream bourbon at my local Total Wine in SoCal. I did a blind test of it against HH 6 year green label that I happened to recently import from Louisville. Curious to see how you compare the two.
I can get these for 25-30. At those prices, this is one of the best buys in whiskey, imo. Especially the EG and LM
Nice review! I agree LM is the best!
Just reviewed Lost Monarch last night and love it. Got some different notes than you of apple, maple, definite dill rye note and even a grape aspect like there’s a finished whiskey in there. Reminded me a lot of Mid Winter Nights Dram 🤷♂️ I LOVE this one!
I can see the finished aspect to it. Alot of great notes since it's blended. Easily my favorite.
The Mash and Drum couldn’t tell if power of suggestion and it being made in Sanoma, CA made me taste grapes haha! Cheers my friend and as usual, great review!
Been looking at it for over a year, how was the liquid in the original bottle?
About to crack my 30$ lost monarch, thanks for review!
mmmmmmmmmm
grabbed the pipe dream last night for $35. I def hear you on the apricot and cherry. and nutty. it reminds me of Yellowstone or maybe pinhook. not bad at all but not really my profile. prob wouldn't rush to get another one.
me either. The Lost Monarch is the gem of the 3.
I just bought a bottle of Redwood empire for $23 in Upstate NY. Absolutely delicious especially for the price
$23!! Great price! I saw it for $29.99 in Cali but maybe the price went up.
Opening my pipe dream next weekend, very excited.
Let me know how it is. Just opened my Lost Monarch today and it's delicious, so light and airy. Very excited to try the others!
@@SuperAdvanced18 will do sir!
Pipe dream and lost monarch are a hit for me!
I will say, these labels are so good looking; very attractive. The bourbon junkies like this brand a lot. I don’t believe they are available in PA, are they available in Ohio?
Finally my area represented on here
NOR CAL....NORTHEN CALI.... NORTHERN EXPOSURE...Yayy Area
I was able to purchase all three for under $30 each in Florida. So based on that price point would you consider them all a recommend. At $40 I would probably only repurchase the Lost Monarch
Being a west coast native I like to see both the smoke wagon and the redwood empire bourbons, also I have tried the Woodinville, which was very tasty
Need to get your hands on Redwood Empire 12 Year! Sooooo damn good!
Thats sounds awesome! Havent seen it.
What 12 year did you get? Cab, port or the Chardonnay? I have the ability to buy the Cabernet but have not pulled the trigger yet.
@@christopherdavid446 Port Cask.
Oh man....I LOVE the Emerald Giant. I would call it an “Elegant Rye”. Sure, it’s not as aggressive as other ryes but I thought the flavors were really interesting and keeps me coming back for more. It’s easily the fastest drinking rye in my house right now!!
I can see that. I like it better at 30 bucks than 40. But it is unique.
The Mash and Drum ....fair enough. In the Dallas area it’s $31.99. Need to try the Old Forester Rye you mentioned. Cheers!
Man...im up near buffalo ny and I just paid 39.99 for emerald giant...i was in the liquor store a cpl weeks ago n I had no idea what I wanted...the clerk suggested this line n I'm so glad I listened...i loved the pipe dream...its hard to pick a favorite but that is definitely up there...cant wait to jump on the emerald giants shoulder
@@mikemcnamara2837 I’m about to finish my bottle....will be replacing it very quickly.
@@Davidmeinhorn most deff worth it
Cali-for-nee-i-hey Jason!
LOL!
Thank you for another great review. Would you describe the Lost Monarch as an alternative to Basil Hayden?
Managed to find a Lost Monarch right here in Ohio!
How is it?
@@thomasdantas good! Just picked some up for $39. I think it's worth it.
In Ohio also. Be hearing about the Lost Monarch for awhile now. It's delicious!
they are definitely coming along. How do you think the Lost Monarch stacks up against the original redwood empire bottling?
I think they are pretty close. Both are sweet and spicy. I think I liked the monarch a bit better. Seemed to have a bit more of a flavor punch to it but they are close. Easily my favorite of the three
I got Lost Monarch for $30 so I feel the value is higher than above average.
I taste no peanut in the pipe dream. I get a very much dry fruit cherry with a dark chocolate note
They have cask strength at my local store 100 bucks
Do you trade? If so, have any interest in a 20' belle meade honey cask 115.8 proof? Thanks
I do but not sure I have anything unopened worth that value.
Ok. Rather than 1:1 I was looking for quanity. Really been trying to locate 2 jack heritages with a little bigger plus. If you come across anything let me know. Love your channel.
@@dmott9750 will do! Appreciate that.
Just found these at locally for $37.99
The MGP stuff always tastes so similar to me.. I bought a bottle of the pipe dream and my first sip I’m like “this is belle meade”.. Then I compared and they taste pretty darn similar. It’s good but not my favorite sourced whiskey by any means
Yeah pipe dream is ok.
Just drink it man
I found the rye for $30.00. And yeah it’s not a world beater but for $30 I am happy with the purchase. Is the Lost Monarch similar to the Outryder by Wyoming Whiskey which is a blend of bourbon and rye?
Cant say Ive had the Outryder but its somewhat similar to the Bourye from High West but I think its alot better than that. The lost Monarch is more fruity and well rounded to me.
they just do not make enough for the general public.. more like a regional thing.
I see these bottles everywhere in the Midwest.
My husband made these
To mr the Lost Monarch smells like cola
I wish you would take your arms off the table because the whiskeys shaking is distracting
