I grew up not forced on any religion, I now am a Baptist which is a branch of Christianity. I still celebrate Halloween, I even go trick or treating with my niece.
My suspected step parents, especially my SSM were the absent-minded type. Especially when it came to borrowing books from the library, because I got given a full set of 'The Odyssey' on CD at a very young age. I think maybe five or six. I was able to watch or listen to anything with magic in it, including 'Harry Potter' and the movie 'Hercules' and thankfully that was at least some of what helped me smoothly transition into being a Hellenic polytheist/pagan these days.
I'm all for the celebration of Halloween and spooky season, especially now as I'm an adult. Unfortunately, it wasn't something we would do as kids. That, or I wasn't allowed to tag along with the other kids because they either thought I would get lost, would slow the group down because of my disability, etc. I'm not sure what the thought process was there. But I'm glad I get to appreciate a lot of the spooks as an adult and a pagan. :)
Literally everything with any ounce of magic was banned. My mom walked out of the room and scolded me when I put on Puss In Boots: The Last Wish 😂 And yes, no pokemon
Yep. I was never allowed to watch or read Harry Potter and Lord of the rings, never allowed to watch Star Wars, Star Trek, Pokemon, a large list of Disney movies, anything with superheroes, Scooby Doo, Hotel Transylvania and the list can go on. Also I was never allowed to play: any Mario game, Undertale, Deltarune, MINECRAFT, The Legend of Zelda, anything with violence (COD, GTA, World of Warcraft, FNAF etc.) and many many more If you tell me I have no book/ movie/ game culture, I totally agree with you But with all the opposition from my parents, I bought my first Harry Potter book this fall and I love it. This year I'm celebrating Halloween, Christmas and New Year's openly, even if I have lots of opposition from my family. Can't wait to escape this mess and be myself, a normal person. Happy Halloween everyone 🎃
Fun fact - when Michael Jackson released the “Thriller” music video, he was a JW and was threatened with excommunication, hence the warning at the beginning of the video.
But isn't it that it's haram to observe Halloween as a Muslim? It's not even sunnah in Islam. So essentially you're going against Islam in observing Halloween.
I finally told my parents and siblings that I no longer want to be a witness. They were upset but they still talk to me now and then. We’ll see if that changes when we turn in our letter. I’ll be celebrating halloween in the open this year after 2 decades of not being able to. I got to decorate my door, I have my costume ready. And even my boss made sure not to schedule hearings on the 31st so I could go dressed up to work. Im even going to a halloween party! I’ve been so happy.
My grandma is a JW... I went to a few kingdom hall meetings, but I never really worked well there. I find the organization too restrictive and condescending. Anywho, glad you got out. I hope that your negative experience hasnt turned you away from spirituality entirely. I can't say I know the truth for certain but I know there's truth out there. Good luck, fellow traveler.
"I want to hate what jehovah hates" is pretty cultish too. Just following orders and aligning their morals because that's what someone told them jehovah doesn't like. That's all it takes for them to condemn something.
@@that_centipede_lover1. Cool username. 2. It didn’t read cultish to me. It read more “protection racket”. Like, “God protects his loyal ones, so I better bend the knee and swear fealty”. It’s the way capos look at a mob boss. It’s quite antithetical to the claims JWs make about their loving relationship with God.
@@thecastleoftruestblue9665 I mean, the JWs did correctly belittle the awful colour colour grading of the _Twilight_ movies. They got a laugh from me. Honestly, that and the street beggar staring at the JW were effective to me. This is possibly the best JW production, which is not saying much.
@@untitled-gv3qp Good point. For people who claim to be “Bible students”, I’m shocked but the lack of depth and theological inquiry exhibited by the JWs. Shouldn’t she wish to understand why Jehovah hates the things he does?
I am a teen who’s forced to be a Jehovah’s Witness, my parents wouldn’t allow me to watch avengers, Star Wars for a while (I can now) nothing Harry Potter related, and not shooter games or ghost games. (I snuck watching all of those things anyway) I plan to leave when I’m 18 out of the cult. But this channel has been helping me with my decisions. So thank you.
I’m going through the same thing (except I’m not really into Star Wars, Avengers, or Harry Potter), I’ve been wanting to cosplay for a while. I’m not even allowed to wear colored hoodies for Halloween (Alvin and the Chipmunks). My parents like to use Christianity as an excuse to be offensive and controlling. I can’t wait until I’m 18 so I can finally have freedom (although that means I have to pay taxes :/) Edit: I got to go trick or treating with my friends because my brother snuck me out 😏
@ same bro my parents do the same stuff. It’s really dumb ion really care about Star Wars or marvel either. I was just going along with the points in the video.
@@Crow-j2u my mom often talks about people in the store if they “look weird” or “smell weird” (she pointed out a goth girl) and my dad often points out that people on the street or walking on the sidewalk are “poor” and I shouldn’t end up like them. I had a lot to rant about to my siblings (who also went through the same thing), my parents are also big hypocrites ("dont be a follower" even though they'll do anything the church says, even believing that autism could be cured because the pastor told this story about a mom who didn't like that her son had autism so she fed him healthier and his autism "went away", as someone with autism I was kinda offended tbh, and they'll complain about me being on the phone (even if it's to check the time but they're on Facebook all day and believe everything, they believed an AI pic of Target and my dad made my siblings skip school because of some Facebook post). Also they LOVE to guilt trip. Don't even get me started on the ridiculous Halloween story my pastor said -_- Sorry for the rant
@ Fr, the Halloween story my pastor said sounded so fake, and everyone believes the reason why kids dress up is because they’re preparing to sacrifice themselves to the devil. My mom accused me for being a devil worshipper because I wanted to wear a colored hoodie for Halloween 🙄 But somehow they have an excuse to be judgmental because “God wants them to be” (they’re sometimes racist but they think God enjoys when they do that, but it’s bad if someone else does it?)
Its quite insane comming from JW's compare to a Christian Baptist. Christmas was once pagan, then when America became a Godfearing country, the government wanted Christmas to be a holiday for Christ part of American culture. So JW's really have nothing to say. It all sounds like a cult if you ask me why they live with no fun in there life.
@RippleE.M.P woah... Wait let's just say you went on a trip to like Rome Would you be allowed to take photos with like the Colosseum or visit the archaeological sites?
Oh yeah, they hate the historical Christian Church. They literally believe there were no true Christians on Earth between the 1st century AD and the late 19th century. It's funny, but if you look into it, JW theology is much closer to Islam than Christianity. They deny the divinity of Jesus, they believe God is a unitary being, they reject icons and cathedrals (duomos), they embrace theocracy...they have very little in common with either historical or contemporary Christians.
@@Wasteofenlightment104 we might be able to visit archeological sites, but we probably weren't allowed to go near cathedrals or the Vatican. Because in their eyes those buildings are buildings of false worship and Satan is in charge of them.
I remember my grandma going to my house, I was playing Mario Bros 1... She's started screaming me "TURN IT OFF" "IT HAS A DRAGON! THE ORIGINAL 🐍!" The same when I watched How to Train Your Dragon jajaja! DRAGONS! THE DEVIL! AAAAAAH 🤡!

I had a neighbour that every Halloween was "sick" so she never went to our Halloween parties, then i discovered that her mom told her to lie to us because she was from the opus dei and they also don't celebrate Halloween.
@@definitivamenteno-malo7919 im no spaniard, but aren't these more like traditional catholics? as most catholics nowadays hardly go to church in some countries
I grew up Catholic, and here in Germany, Halloween wasn't really a thing, especially in smaller areas. We always celebrated "Erntedankfest" at the first weekend of October and pumpkins were certainly a common decoration, but without the spooky faces. As Halloween became a little bit more known here, nobody in the church took an issue with it. At least in our town. For us, Halloween was just like Carnival but with spooky costumes. Sure, fundamentalists will always take an issue with this, but most religious people I met either didn't care about Halloween or they joined because they like the idea of horror-themed parties.
I grew up in Mexico in a more devout than usual Catholic family and Halloween was never banned in our household and my mother was a big fan of Harry Potter and still is to this day, although before moving to the US I do remember some opposition to Halloween maybe in part because of anti-US sentiments some have but we thought it was mostly older generations who did that. Even in my most devout phase in college I never opposed this holiday as long as it didn’t go overboard and I sometimes wonder if the fears around it is mostly a US Protestant phenomenon, at most the very conservative parish I went to back in uni celebrated All Saints instead and we had the kids dress up as saints (although if you know how gruesome saints art can be I never saw a kid dressed up as a saint whose head was chopped up though). Also Day of the Dead wasn’t as internationally famous just a few decades ago and was mostly a regional thing but I’ve noticed that it’s basically getting merged with Halloween with all the commercialization.
I remember being out in service once during this time and there was a cartoonish goofy ghost in someone's yard. No blood, no demons, just a cutie ghost and the ladies were literally like "omg DISGUSTING" and being super dramatic 🙄🙄🙄🙄
Yet the blood fetish on Colossians KJV is okay. Then if you censor it and leave it as "In through him we got redemption and forgiveness of sins" King James Stans throw hissy fits and call it a corrupt translation if you remove the blood fetish. The writers of the New International version (a hated translation by KJ Stans but AOP popular with evangelicals) were based to be like: "Blood fetish is redemption? nope, gotta get rid of that and keep redemption through honor"
I am a Christian, (not a JW), my parents were also Christians but we lived in a haunted house. The previous owner had un-alived himself after his wife left him. Dad was a former Australian Aboriginal missionary and found them to live in a very spiritually alive and connected universe. This universe was like a parallel World for them, not good or evil, just there. So when he found that there was a ghost in the house he had bought, he spoke to it, greeting him by name and letting him know that he was going to live there with his wife and children. He said that he didn't mind if he (the ghost) was there, but if he made trouble for him and his family, the priest would be called in to do an exorcism. I saw the ghost from time to time and would often hear him walking up and down the hallway. He would also slam doors, but other than that, made no trouble for us. My entire childhood was spent in that house, and it was a happy home for me. Ghosts are real, they are people like you and me (not demons) but they don't have bodies any more. Some people are happy and peaceful, and some ghosts are happy and peaceful, others are violent, angry and insane, making trouble wherever they can, because that's what they were like when they were alive. Most ghosts I have met died in unhappy or even violent circumstances, or have some sort of unfinished business and that's why they can't move on. Sometimes I feel my husband's ghost around me (he died in 2003) and he is there to protect me and because he loves me. He spends some time in Heaven (he was also a Believer) but travels back and forth between these two realms.
I believe that the school i used to go to might be haunted because one day when i was going home i heard and felt someone breathing and whispering on my ear and when i looked behind me no one was anywhere near me i then went home completely freaked out by it i wish more people took the supernatural serious enough to conduct research or found organizations focused in trying to understand it using science‚occultism etc.
I'm just curious: Christians believe that humans go to either heaven or hell when they die, since that's what the Bible says. So I'm genuinely interested in how you believe in ghosts as human spirits that linger on Earth, and yet, I assume, also believe that every person goes to heaven or hell when they die? As the two are pretty contradictory. Unless you're part of a denomination who doesn't believe that, despite it being a pretty core belief in Christianity? Please don't read this in a passive aggressive manner or anything, as I said I'm just genuinely curious your thoughts!
I didn't grow up in this religion, as a matter of fact, I grew up secular. But I find the channel fascinating to learn about how your experiences were.
When I was growing up as a JW forty years ago the elder gave a talk about how when a child went to the Kingdom Hall wearing a t-shirt with a Smurf on it and someone said Jehovah the Smurf jumped off the shirt and ran out the building. I was told that Smurf means demon in another language.
No it doesn't, that person was wrong. It's a made up word that was made to sound like "Strumpf" as socks in german. where I live, if you call someone by that word, it means that person is an idiot.
Also...try that with other things in life. "I wanna love the food that this person loves" "I wanna hate the clothes that person hates". Think again when you have to TRAIN yourself into loving or hating something. MAYBE time can do that ("I used to hate this food, now I love it") but indoctrination is more like superficial and artificial. So you might as well watch horror movies but still be a good person 🤷♀️
Jw are a very small part of Christians I hope you know that. There are much more: Catholics, Coptics, Protestants, Orthodoxies and so on. We aren't exactly the same.
my parents would hang up a paper sign on our door with a witch on it and capital letters saying 'WE ARE JEHOVAHS WITNESSES. Help, my mom wont let me watch harry potter because the movie contains witchcraft and magic. And when i told her that just because i watch a fictional movie that contains magic, doesn't mean im supporting nor encouraging magic, and it doesn't mean i would do magic either. But my mom told me that I'm wrong and that I am supporting and encouraging magic just by watching Harry potter. What else should i tell her? I just need advice from someone because i don't want to stop doing the things i love just because my religion told me so, But at the same time i also want to keep on being part of a religion because I've experienced other religious people that are extremely kind to me and are also not super strict when it comes to religion.

That phrase "Jehova hates..." I grew up in a southern Baptist church in rural Alabama. I got the full fire and brimstone surmons about going to hell if you were feminist or gay or trans. That sin was everywhere. The road to damnantion is wide and the path to Heaven narrow. But, never did my pastor say "God hates...." it's straight up blasphemous yet they say it all the time.
Not a bootleg Twilight movie 😂! So the GB is watching YA movies, lol. I always tell my mother vampires and werewolves can't be from Satan... because they don't exist (neither does Satan, but that might blow her mind). It is weird how much JWs obsess over the origin of every holiday but have no idea about the orgins of their own cult.
I visited my JW cousin last night and she has no idea i faded away form the Jehova's Witneses, but vidsiting her yesterday, i see a DVD of The Phantom Of The Opera in her living room, so my thoughts were saying "are they watching movies they're not suppose to watch?".
My friend's not a JW, but very religious and this describes her perfectly. She doesn't watch Star Wars and Harry Potter, because of Magic. She can't celebrate Halloween and she also doesn't watch Horror movies, because many have themes involving demons or satan (like The Exorcist, the Conjuring series,....) Also she told me to throw away my spell jar which my other friend gave me :(
Honestly, unrelated to Halloween, the anti-spiritualism is SO strong in my family its insane. While we aren't JW, they're Christian, and I was raised as such. However, due to me slipping up, they learned I was a practicing Pagan. I was almost made homeless over that. My father even told me, "The word 'Pagan' is a trigger to Christians. Are you trying to trigger me on purpose?" Man if I knew it was a TRIGGER WORD, I would have avoided it at all cost and never started actively practicing.. now would I..? He had also told me he had cut people out of his life, good, nice people, because they weren't christians. I am not going to talk badly on Christianity, however, that sounded so cultish to me. I had NEVER seen my family in that light before so it actually scared me. Did I turn back to Christianity? No, however, it just made me MORE fearful of my family. Suddenly I wasn't their child, I was a "satan-worshipper", something to burn at the stake. My father had said to me that I had to stop practicing or I had to leave, however, when I said "fine I'll leave", he threatened to disown me and keep me from my siblings. When I suddenly 'changed my mind', he belittled me on "well if your religion is so important to you, why are you changing your mind?", because to me, family, or at least people I have deep ties to, are more important than practicing religion. He didn't seem to understand the hypocrisy. I would like to point out, again, I'm not bashing Christianity, at all. My mother was Christian, she raised me, however she was also very spiritual. She believed in tarot, she was wicca for a period in her life; that was the kind of religious person I was used to being around. However, holy hell, its a whiplash as a spiritual LGBT person, to suddenly be uprooted and have to live in an aggressively Christian household. I was trying to tie this in with the whole 'no amulets or magic objects' thing. My family is HEAVY on anti-magical objects, that's what I was getting at lmao. To note, all I had was a tiny altar and I had only lit a candle; no 'witchcraft' had been done. (TOTALLY FORGOT TO CLARIFY, my parents were divorced, I lived with my mom and my father remarried, after my mom passed, I was stuck living with my father and his wife)
7:20 when i was a kid, i had a monster high and MY GRANDMOTHER made me throw it to the trash just before showing me that episode. That was literally the reason i stopped wanting to go to JW church or be part of any religion.
I WORKED with a JW at Jared’s Jewelers. She would always preach about how they don’t celebrate holidays, birthdays, etc…. Only anniversaries. Now when it came time to enter holiday pay, she was always the first to message me to enter her time. Don’t celebrate but wants to profit off it. She ended up stabbing the manager in the back and is now a District Manager for Jared’s. Ha ha.

Happy Halloween. 😊 I’m a Catholic who has always celebrated Halloween. I don’t know how many Christians realize that the holiday has very Christian roots. It’s the eve of All Saints Day, and was originally celebrated by the early Church in May. A couple hundred years later, the Pope moved it to November 1 when he was dedicating a basilica on that day. It’s such a neat and fun holiday that has a lot of fascinating history! 😊
@@praisejesus-v7swell i didnt know that, i'm Christian and in My family the Main reason we don't celebrate it, it's because "the souls that have died stay in Lord's house" and well spiritism is forbidden cause you are talking with demons, also we don't talk to angels for the same reason
That Spongebob clip is hilarious. I wish you included that part where Mr. Krabs had to flip over the paper to show the list because he was showing his grocery list. Spongebob screamed, "It's a FLOATING grocery list!"
I used think my Mom was unreasonable for not letting me watch Ed, Edd, & Eddy because it would "rot my brain". I still watched it when she wasn't around though. So glad I didn't grow up in a very religious household
this year I celebrated halloween for the first time as an atheist! My parents still think i’m christian so i can’t do much but i changed one of my pfps to wear a witch hat. the feeling of freedom was unmatched.
Ha, UA-cam and its comedic timing Caleb's mom: Do you really want to play with something (wizard toy) Jehovah hates? UA-cam: have an ad for the Harry Potter Studio Tour
My family never had a problem with Halloween and even dressed my sisters and me up as witches more than once. However, I had heard sermons (that I strongly disagree with) about how Christians shouldn’t celebrate Halloween, and sometimes one can feel that tension in Church. For example, churches don’t have Halloween parties for kids anymore; they have “Fall Festival” or “Trunk or Treat.” I think we’ve all kinda agreed that this is one matter where Romans 14:1-6 applies (a passage I have often wondered how JWs react to it if they ignore it entirely).
Speaking of amulets. There was a time this year where I attended two meetings, not by my own choice. And I wore two crystal necklaces, sometimes I would tap or just hold them when the meetings got too cringy, lol. It's also possible I would have received some odd looks, but no comments were made either by the members or any elders passing by at the beginning or end of the sessions. I would have even worn my evil eye bracelet if I had it at the time, just to see if any elders would have noticed an outsider quietly lurking in their midst. 😂
im a lutheran christian and no, i dont think halloween is evil. can bad things be done on halloween? sure, but that goes for every day of the year. halloween is only harmful if you make it harmful, but i respect others’ decision to not celebrate it. i personally don’t *technically* celebrate it because costumes can be expensive or time consuming to make, i’m not a kid anymore, and i’m too introverted for college parties lol.
As a child i was not allowed to watch FANTASIA. Mickey Mouse was the sorcerors apprentice. Even troll dolls were frowned upon. Doesnt the bible depict our future? I digress!!!!!
i work for a day program for people with intellectual disabilities, and last month i took a group out that wanted to go see a movie. everyone in the group talked and decided on the new betelgeuse movie. well one of the guys is a JW (or his family is any way) and he was pretty psyched about getting to go see a movie, and said that it was ok because he had seen the first one. we get to the movie theater and as we get in line i can see he starts looking a bit nervous. he steps out of line and said he needs to call his mom. he's gone for a few minutes while i'm helping everyone else get their tickets, and i decide to go check on him while the rest of the guys go find their seats. his mom on the phone is talking so loud and frantically that i can overhear her. she's saying things about "his salvation" and "morality" and how he needs to make the right decision. poor guy was so stressed, he looked like he was about to burst into tears, he just kept saying "i know mom, i know- yeah my morality i know." i felt sooo bad for him, and for unknowingly putting him in that situation. in the end he decided not to see the movie, and i offered to have another staff member pick him up so he could do an alternative activity for the day. but i couldn't believe that anyone would seriously believe that they would receive eternal damnation for watching a pg-13 spooky movie, and that they would pressure their child into almost having a panic attack over it. i'm still upset about it!
What was your experience growing up in this religion? Were any movies/ TV shows banned in your household? 🎃 Let me know in the comments below
My mom walked out of the room and scolded me when I put on Puss In Boots: The Last Wish 😂
And yes, no pokemon
Yep. I was never allowed to watch or read Harry Potter and Lord of the rings, never allowed to watch Star Wars, Star Trek, Pokemon, a large list of Disney movies, anything with superheroes, Scooby Doo, Hotel Transylvania and the list can go on.
Also I was never allowed to play: any Mario game, Undertale, Deltarune, MINECRAFT, The Legend of Zelda, anything with violence (COD, GTA, World of Warcraft, FNAF etc.) and many many more
If you tell me I have no book/ movie/ game culture, I totally agree with you
But with all the opposition from my parents, I bought my first Harry Potter book this fall and I love it. This year I'm celebrating Halloween, Christmas and New Year's openly, even if I have lots of opposition from my family. Can't wait to escape this mess and be myself, a normal person. Happy Halloween everyone 🎃

I believe that the school i used to go to might be haunted because one day when i was going home i heard and felt someone breathing and whispering on my ear and when i looked behind me no one was anywhere near me i then went home completely freaked out by it
i wish more people took the supernatural serious enough to conduct research or found organizations focused in trying to understand it using science‚occultism etc.

Even recently, games were unbanned a bit if they were puzzle games or school games like prodigy. I don't follow in the Christian footsteps of my mom and dad. My brother who's 21 and in college finally broke free and is an atheist and plays Minecraft freely. I hope I'll be able to live my own life soon. Also this is extremely long.

I wasn't raised in a religious household, but I was raised as a girl (I am a transgender man) in a southern "traditional" household, and was never allowed to play video games, while my brother was allowed to play video games. And I wasn't really allowed to read books outside of school books. TBH I think my family would have kept me out of school if the county allowed it. So now as an adult I'm catching up on video games and books I missed out as a kid.
I did get to play Spyro Dawn of the Dragons with my dad when I got to visit him (parents weren't together and mother had custody), and Lego Pirates of the Caribbean with my brother because he needed a player 2

That phrase "Jehova hates..." I grew up in a southern Baptist church in rural Alabama. I got the full fire and brimstone surmons about going to hell if you were feminist or gay or trans. That sin was everywhere. The road to damnantion is wide and the path to Heaven narrow. But, never did my pastor say "God hates...."
it's straight up blasphemous yet they say it all the time.
"its supposed to be great' 😂
I visited my JW cousin last night and she has no idea i faded away form the Jehova's Witneses, but vidsiting her yesterday, i see a DVD of The Phantom Of The Opera in her living room, so my thoughts were saying "are they watching movies they're not suppose to watch?".
My friend's not a JW, but very religious and this describes her perfectly. She doesn't watch Star Wars and Harry Potter, because of Magic. She can't celebrate Halloween and she also doesn't watch Horror movies, because many have themes involving demons or satan (like The Exorcist, the Conjuring series,....)
Also she told me to throw away my spell jar which my other friend gave me :(
I got Hazbin hotel merchandise around my room to scare Jehovah away.
Not today not ever lol.
don’t throw it away. I would just keep it locked away if she comes over.
For a holiday that involves going around and knocking at strangers houses, you’d think JW’s would love it.

it also has pagan roots in it too. people don't see it as a christian hoilday anymore sadly.

Wait. So, if Watchtower said Jehovah hates eg. Blenders, are they just. Not allowed to drink smoothies? :(

i work for a day program for people with intellectual disabilities, and last month i took a group out that wanted to go see a movie. everyone in the group talked and decided on the new betelgeuse movie. well one of the guys is a JW (or his family is any way) and he was pretty psyched about getting to go see a movie, and said that it was ok because he had seen the first one.
we get to the movie theater and as we get in line i can see he starts looking a bit nervous. he steps out of line and said he needs to call his mom. he's gone for a few minutes while i'm helping everyone else get their tickets, and i decide to go check on him while the rest of the guys go find their seats. his mom on the phone is talking so loud and frantically that i can overhear her. she's saying things about "his salvation" and "morality" and how he needs to make the right decision. poor guy was so stressed, he looked like he was about to burst into tears, he just kept saying "i know mom, i know- yeah my morality i know."
i felt sooo bad for him, and for unknowingly putting him in that situation. in the end he decided not to see the movie, and i offered to have another staff member pick him up so he could do an alternative activity for the day. but i couldn't believe that anyone would seriously believe that they would receive eternal damnation for watching a pg-13 spooky movie, and that they would pressure their child into almost having a panic attack over it. i'm still upset about it!
This comment made me cry and I’m a person with a disability, that poor man!
