In a sterile, gleaming research laboratory aboard the Celestial Inquiry, a sprawling alien research vessel orbiting a distant, neutral planet, chaos erupted among the team of Xaltran scientists.
The Xaltrans, an advanced and enigmatic species with translucent skin and crystalline eyes that shimmered like prisms, were renowned across the galaxy for their relentless pursuit of knowledge. For centuries, they had cataloged countless genetic profiles from species spanning the cosmos. Yet, nothing had prepared them for the discovery encoded within the DNA of a human exchange student, 19-year-old Aaron Voss, who stood nervously at the edge of the room.
"Impossible," hissed Dr. Ch'thara, her shimmering tendrils curling with agitation as she scrutinized the holographic DNA sequence suspended in mid-air.
The sequence spiraled in a dazzling display of golden nucleotides, glowing unnaturally vibrant against the sterile white backdrop of the lab.
"What is it?" Aaron asked, his voice trembling with curiosity and a hint of unease. He felt the weight of dozens of alien eyes fixated on him.
Dr. Ch'thara swiveled her eyestalks toward him. "Your genome, human, defies logical explanation."
    "What do you mean?"
A lower-ranking researcher, an insectoid with chitinous limbs and a voice that clicked as it spoke, leaned closer to the display. "Your species has no right to exist," it muttered in awe.
    Aaron blinked. "Excuse me?"
The head researcher, Dr. Va’lorix-a towering figure with bioluminescent patterns pulsating across its body-stepped forward, its movements precise and deliberate. "To be more specific, your DNA contains markers indicative of temporal interference, quantum entanglement, and-" It paused, as if struggling to articulate the enormity of the revelation. "There are sequences that suggest your species has interacted with universal constants in ways we cannot comprehend. It’s as if... your genetic structure was designed."
Aaron felt a chill crawl up his spine. "Designed by what?"
"That is the question," Ch'thara snapped, her tone a mixture of exasperation and awe. "The only beings capable of creating such an anomaly would be... gods. Or something beyond even our understanding."
The tension in the room was palpable. The Xaltrans, who prided themselves on their rationality, their scientific precision, were utterly at a loss.
"But humans are... ordinary," Aaron protested weakly.
"Ordinary?" Va’lorix echoed, its voice tinged with something akin to reverence. "Your DNA contains vestigial remnants of traits we have never encountered elsewhere in the universe-impossibly adaptive immune responses, an inherent connection to entropy regulation, and these-" It gestured at a pulsing segment of the hologram, which thrummed like a heartbeat. "These markers are not from this universe."
Aaron’s breath caught. He took a hesitant step forward. "Are you saying... humans don’t come from here? Like, this galaxy?"
Ch'thara let out a soft, musical trill of disbelief. "Perhaps not even this dimension. There are fragments here that resonate with extradimensional energy signatures we cannot replicate, even with our most advanced technologies."
A long silence followed. Aaron felt the room closing in, every alien eye scrutinizing him as though he were a living artifact, a puzzle they might never solve.
Dr. Va’lorix finally broke the silence. "Human, your kind may hold the key to understanding the origin of the universe itself-or its ultimate destruction. This... changes everything."
The weight of the pronouncement sank into Aaron’s chest like a stone. He had only come aboard the Celestial Inquiry to learn alien engineering principles, not to become the most enigmatic specimen in galactic history.
"What do we do now?" Aaron asked softly.
Va’lorix’s bioluminescent patterns flared brightly, casting eerie shadows across the lab. "Now, human, we study you. Intensely."
Aaron swallowed hard. It wasn’t the answer he’d hoped for.
