Not all police are bad guys but the few bad apples like this one spoil the whole barrel. The power associated with that little gold badge is a major draw for narcissits and sociopaths.

      Problem is even with the bodycams we have documented evidence of cops turning them off to have secret side conversations during an arrest. We like to think these cameras are the great equalizer but until turning them off becomes an actual criminal charge then it doesn’t change much.

    I’ve been in law enforcement for 14 years and not once would I ever shut my camera off or cut a break to any member of law enforcement because they know better. No excuse.

    As a former cop, the only thing I can say is that I hope that Captain is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law as well as being sanctioned in accordance with police department policy.

      what would've happened to either of them? nothing?
      legally the SS do have the right NOT to do their job (for w/e reason) right? it's not like they risk any legal consequences

      ​@@fightsportspace7327 Still happens even with these cameras. The only thing that stopped this officer from turning his camera off was his own integrity and moral expectations. He may return to work the following day shamed by fellow officers for arresting a captain, but there's always gonna be the "good ones" (i just put that in " " cuz every officer is supposed to be a good one) that will respect him. They say that cops are the biggest gang in the U.S. and if you think about it, they all have each other's backs. Lots of scummy stuff goes on that gets hidden to protect one of their own. This is a general statement. My father has been an officer for nearly 30 years now and I look up to him so much. My heart filled with respect as soon as the officer refused to turn his camera off. Always do the right thing.

    A+, 10/10 performance from this sergeant. It's not easy to do the right thing and hold your colleagues accountable. I'm sure he's talked about behind his back at his station and lost the respect of a lot of coworkers, but this is justice, and this is what all officers should strive to be. The police - and every other occupation - will never be perfect, but this officer's actions brings them closer to it, and that's heroic.

      Exactly. Shudder to think what sometimes happens in departments where there are no body cams. I find it crazy that it’s left to each municipality to choose its own policy

    I would travel from Texas to take this officer to breakfast, lunch, or dinner. He not only performed professionally, but he has an excellent command of speech. Great voice, and so controlled under the circumstances.

    If a cop whispers “turn off your camera” as if he doesn’t think the camera caught that, he’s way more than “a little drunk”… I like this cop, tells the captain straight up you’re no different than anyone else I might stop

    I can only imagine what this officer is thinking/feeling. He must have been upset that the captain put him in this situation in the first place and likely ashamed that one of their own would be so reckless. Good on the cop for doing his job as painful as it must have been for him. Taxi/uber is always cheaper than DUI. If I have someone drinking at my place I would rather them spend the night then drive drunk. I also got the spare beds for them to sleep in too. This could have been SOO much worse but I am glad this had the best outcome.

    Long time ago, I had few beers and drove back home. I lost control and crashed in the tree. I lost my new car few months old, I went to jail for few days only and I’m so so glad that I didn’t hurt anybody and I’m so thankful that happened to me because after that I changed so much. it was the best lesson ever for the rest of my life. I’m new man now. It happened 7 years ago.

    They should not be allowed to turn it off at all when in these situations.

      They do it all the time, just don’t get caught. Officers are human too and make mistakes too but they usually aren’t held accountable.
