Such a good film. One talented actress, a thoughtful script, and good editing. Shows that good sci-fi doesn't need expensive special effects.

Carl Sagan explained this years ago. Mankind has been around for appx 10,000 years, a blink of the eye in cosmic time. The chances of two planets having civilizations capable of space travel at the same time and being close enough to travel to each other are slim and none. The odds are very much against it ever happening.

Assumptions about what we know nothing about. The universe is much, much bigger than we realise. The visible universe is such a tiny piece of the whole universe. The odds of finding one civilisation in our universe is one - and we are that one. There are other civilisations, but they are so far away that they are beyond the event horizon. That is why we have never met them. Solution of Fermi Paradox, QED.

It would have been better if all the cars and pedestrians in the background froze when he gestured, until the hooded man was off screen, and then slowly started up again after he was gone.... would have been a simple effect. Good short film but it needed something more fantastic as a clincher...

Honestly, like many people I think, I guessed at the very start that stranger seated across from the young female scientist was most likely an alien, and that there would be some odd jolt at the end. But, the actress (Sarah) did a great job, so I stayed hooked. Interesting idea. The young female scientist gives off a great vibe, and I really enjoy conversations like the Fermi Paradox and the Drake Equation.

isn't it possible we don't actually understand space, time, energy, the universe, what we see "out there," if its out there? Hasn't it historically been the case we thought we knew what we were looking at but it was not even close? I have a feeling there are some big surprises in the pipeline.

    A good short film.
Femi supposed that any civilization would follow similar technological progression, and so it was the lack of radio waves from outer space which prompted his question, "Where are they?" (N.B. I welcome correction.)
Note that about 75,000 years ago explosion of the volcano Toba in the Indonesian archipelago cast a six-year winter upon the earth and our human ancestors were reduced to less than a thousand beings (I've also read the number of about only 40 survivors). This can be cited as a "filter", an event which can exterminate early intelligent life. Who knows if there are filters in the future for humanity - total nuclear war, asteroid collision, all-consuming disease and bacteria - that will erase us leaving only our radio waves to bounce through the universe.

A friend once told me about meeting a strange woman while having coffee at a Waffle House. She was a new waitress, and he noticed her unearthly green eyes. He remarked, "You ARE from Earth, aren't you?" whereupon the waitress gave him a strange look, like she'd been caught doing something wrong. He told me she never came back to work after that night. Something told me to ask him, "Did you happen to see her name badge?" He said, "Yeah, her name was Orez." I thought for a moment and I said, "You know that's Zero backwards." He looked at me with an astonished look and declared, "YOU'RE RIGHT!" I just chuckled and said, "I think you met an alien, man!" True story.

Right now we have the technology to go to Mars. Why don't we go? The answer is it's really hard and we have better things to do. There seem to be too many assumptions in the Fermi Paradox like is it really worth it for aliens to come here and is it possible to overcome Einsteinian physics.

well sorry but I disagree the Fermi paradox for me is easily explained and in fact it's not a paradox. You provide the answer yourself , the universe is so incredibly big and old that tells you that the distances are so great it seems very unlikely 2 species would even detect eachother and the other point the universe is so old the chances of any species contacting eachother at exactly the right time is also highly improbable. Also another thing, how would we communicate? If they contacted us it would likely be nothing we understand or could detect as if they travelled here they would be so far advanced they would be like Gods and in-fact that brings another reason unlikely for contact, why? why would they bother? unless they are watching us for an experiment then they would likely concele themselves anyway. Anyway just think the Fermi Paradox has always been strange to me....space is big REAL big, if the Sun was a pea, the nearest star would be like 200 miles aways (like a 2 hour plus drive) and we've travelled 5cm in this scale (to the moon) and the nearest star is 4.3 light years away (about 50,000 years for Voyager to get to) and the nearest advanced distance for an alien species to be from us based on a pretty respective (but ambitious) drake equation calcutaion is 200-300 light years away, that's just crazy far and for me makes alien contact very no extremely improbable
but great short film love the actress and to be fair explains most the above I say anyway!

The Fermi paradox doesn't take into account several factors.
Given the distance to travel a million years,
and from a random point being averaged.
Now to each of the three 360 degree arc, one traveler is sent.
So, 360x360x360 travelers in all, 46+ million travelers all traveling
and seeking, all in state of the art spaceships, being able to
supply their near immortal lives for that 1 million years.
Given the average distance from one point to the other within
the galaxy averaging 27 kLY, even with a mere 1 degree spread,
they'd be 471 LY away from us searching.
Now given that any sign of intelligent is caused by stuff like any
sort of lightspeed transmission, and that our lighstpeed transmission globe is
but a mere 100 LY, with the outer edges being but a few kWatt strong,
and stretched out over a distance of 471 LY,
our chances of being detected are really really small..
Even though they may be searching for us best they can, they may still
    be asking the same question....
"Are we alone out there ?", never even having heard of Fermi.

    • @ZMacZ
      @ZMacZ 5 років тому

If you take the shortest route for humanity's existence it's biblical,
in which case it's been at least 25 thousand years ago since
      human kind was created.
However if you take the evolution of life on Earth as a natural
evolution, life started well over 3.46 billion years ago,
      from which mankind descended.
In both cases however it's far longer than the mere 300 years
suggested here, which does constitute our tech age,
but sadly it took a whole lot longer to get to our current tech.
If life evolves into any intelligence wherever it starts,
it may have taken 3.46 billion years to arrive at our current
technology level, and although there's statistically
a chance we are not the only created ones, it does not
necessarily mean that we are NOT the first.
FYI, do not mistake lack of proof for proof of not.

    • @ZMacZ
      @ZMacZ 5 років тому

If intelligence means self-destruction, then you're an idiot.
Intelligence is to grasp the way you're heading as a species,
and avoiding such a thing as self-destruction.
Anything else is not intelligence, but idiocy.
Now ask whether people are intelligent or idiots.
Re-iterating that lack of proof is not proof of not, I can only answer
that when mankind destroys itself, either by war, earthly malmanagement,
or incapability to avoid disaster due to lack of international cohesion.
War contains all the the Nuke, chem and bacteriologicals.
Earthly malmanagement contains all the ways that people eff up the planet
by overpopulation, waste production, deforestation, other ways to make
air unbreathable, ecological distasters, Fukushima and Chernobyl.
The last one means that a disaster like a big fat meteor impact or such
might have been averted, and wasn't due to a pissing contest by
the great earth nations, all wanting the main voice in something, and
then deciding to go each alone, while only all together could
have had any chance to overcome said disaster.
I call this phenomenon species fracture.
And it causes a big fat waste in progress across the entire human
species, since each thinks they know better, while the sum is always
more than each single sub-species by itself.
(with some even being inter-subspecies counterproductive)

    • @MgtowRubicon
      @MgtowRubicon 5 років тому +1

@@ZMacZ The human species still violently defends its belief in supernatural beings, magic, and socialism/communism with its required government force.
Until such catastrophic ideologies to humanity are considered equal to and eradicated like polio and small pox, there is no chance of achieving interstellar travel or beneficial communication with extraterrestrial intelligence, and humanity will eventually go extinct of that self-imposed plague of irrational ideologies.
The level of intelligence that has gotten us into this mess is inadequate to get us out of this mess.

Just enjoy your life, these are the best of times, as they say. Make enough money so you can retire - pick up the piano as a hobby along the way, then do some gardening...

If you run the numbers from where we came from (4.1 billion years of evolving a tiny bit of replicating matter (life)) --- and then how improbable our intelligence is you probably won't give it another thought..

There didn't seem to be any lip sync problem when I watched it. But I have noticed some UA-cam videos have severe problem with lip sync that gets progressively worse over time. I don't know if the problem is the video, UA-cam or my computer.

Honestly anyone who thinks "This great" is clearly new to the Fermi Paradox. This was incredibly boring and predictable. 1 ⭐

There is intelligent life out there, not by necessity in our time and space. They do watch us. We can not go where they are in our current mind state. For most of us our spirits are on the wrong trajectory.

We are not alone first. Second the aliens do not travel in 3d space. Stop being stupid. Plus it is insantanneous travel for them in most cases distance does not exist for them.

One more thing there are aliens that do not need ships to travel here. It is also insantanneous travel. It is true people billions of different life forms exist humans are the lowest of the low life form. Sleep well

You almost have it right. We/they have FTL. Controlled by thought. The problem is, you can say in your mind, I want to go to Mars, you have to have an exact spot you want to go, then you have to repeat it to land. Now what do you do. You see we have the means, but not the map.
