Callout Race Ends with a BLOWN ENGINE: did we push the 4.8 too far?

- Major Meltdown! We raced Jon from @FilmProductions380 and one of our trucks didn't survive. Mine is the COPO truck, a 2000 Silverado 1500 single cab stepside all wheel drive with an LSA supercharger on top of my original LR4 4.8. Its been cammed, as LS7 lifters, better valve springs, headers, 4" exhaust, 4.30 gears, and more. Jon's truck is a 2008 silverado 1500 extended cab with a Gen IV 4.8 with similar upgrades: cam, valve springs and head studs, but his power adder of choice is a 7875 turbocharger. My truck makes 530hp to the wheels where his makes a bit more at 600. Both of our 4.8 engines are still using the stock rotating assembly, so its stock pistons, rods, and crank.

for the guys asking about elevation and DA: my runs showed a DA of 5,885 and Jon's were at 1,730 which does introduce another small variable into the equation. A head-to-head race on the same track would be ideal, and who knows... maybe in the future we'll meet up and run in person.
Maybe next year he'll be ready 😂
5885ft da....the mountains of Mexico.
😱
That’s more than a small variable.
@@matt6951 like half way up pikes peak 😂
Engines always seem to make the most power, a split second before they let go!
Push it till it breaks, fix, and repeat. that's how you go faster
@@user-neo71665 yup Money Cube!
thats pretty much how all engines are, they are the most efficient right before they blow.
LT I got a 4.8 crew cab 4x4 and I'm calling you out. Pack a lunch. Loser buys winner a cold one.
I need to add a little more horsepower before I do any more call outs
@@LawrenceTolman why you scare of a little Benz? :P
@@LawrenceTolman we're pretty evenly matched atm baseline run was 12.78
Both great trucks, love to see friendly competition in the truck scene. Great job guys👍
Much respect LT!, I watch Jon also, so cool to see you two guys doing a collaboration!
LT, it's great that you're throwing out support for Jon and his channel. I'm going to check it out. Good video Sir.
Hate when a friendly competition turns into a mess like that... thanks to you both for covering so many interesting combinations and variables. I've got a 02 tahoe in paint ...and that copo has been an inspiration. I am trying to picture the 4 door squatting and disappearing the same manner, HA
Keep up the great videos! Another follower since your tansition to UA-cam!
I've got an 08 4.8 Tahoe, and I've got the same dream bro, I'm thinking end of this year, this Yahoe should be a different truck entirely.
That's a great head to head comparison of the two trucks and a cool way to accomplish it with Dragy. I'd say its one for the win column for both teams!😎
The best run, is always the last run. John, nice job. She went out, singing, no harm in that ❤
LT, I absolutely love your truck. It's exactly how I would build a truck if I had the money, skills and tools. Awesome job. Keep the videos coming please. I love this build and the truck!
thanks, its much appreciated!
Best episode ever. So cool.
Both of these trucks are so quick. Anything under 13sec in either of these big, heavy pigs is very impressive!!
10yrs ago under 13s would be impressive there are guys with brand-new stock F150s running 13s
@@mesanders1113 fbo 18+ 5.0 run 11s
My 2021 f-150 ran 13.5 stock, spercharged now runs11.5
I raced oval track for many years and have gone thru a few engines - Best line ever was when our driver pulled in and said it sounded like there was a bag of groceries in the oil pan....
I think if he was in your air density it be much closer you'd probably edge him out its harder to spool in thin air
But that's why Super Chargers and Turbo Chargers were made, originally for Aviation for Thin Air conditions.
Also the humidity is higher down here compared to the desert.
Yup turn the boost up in relation to lost air density for location.
Man John's truck is fast and it is a bummer that he blew something. When it does not turn over that is not a good sign. I did subscribe to his channel so I can see what the issue was. Your video is great and the supercharger still sounds amazing to me!! Thanks for another great video!! :)
But isn't that what you guys do . Don't each & everyone of you lean on them until they break . You push stock parts Beyond the ability of it's function and all of you end up on the side of the road with either parts handing out on the ground Or a Hazmat issue ... Bravo boyz well done ...
watching jon's dragy runs on those skinny back roads are kinda scary haha
That sucks he blew it up but while he did go faster yours still drives so really its kind of a win for the both of you!
Dang, Jon's truck is badass. Hopefully it gets rebuilt even better.
I hate it when that happens, but is all part of the game. Even though he got you on the 1/4 mile, you got him on the 1/8 mile, I'll say your truck is doing great!!! I'm going to his channel to see where he goes from here: Stay 4.8 or upgrade to something bigger.🤙
Very cool
LT won if the other guy cant get to the end of the track..lol
I mean, thats how it works in the real world. Besides you need to allow for your higher elevation anyway. Both are very respectable and I hope Jon finds a salvageable engine somehow. Hate to see that. Im a big fan of the COPO, so I lean a bit that way anyhow... Greetings from the farm in S.C.!
Great video. So glad it wasn't your 4.8 that blew up. I feel real bad for John. He'll rebuild her better though.....
my dude is so calm as he scattered it
When you're building and tuning like this, you know the possible consequences. After worrying every time tou hit it for a while, you just get tired of worrying and accept the inevitable. Then the fun *really* begins. 😀
crazy how calm the man stayed during the break.
Enjoyed the video thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Good job Lt
Beautiful
I've been wanting that same set-up on my 03 GMC Sonoma SLS for a few years now. Just never have the money. Less weight is easier on the drive train and quicker on acceleration... I was thinking of using the Astro EXT drive train components to start with.
Man that LSA blower sounds so good from inside the cab!
thanks! I do love the sound it makes
My very close buddy hate almost same truck but stock 4wd 04 single cab 4.8 auto w all the simple mods she was impressive
My 72 GMC in high school with a 350 ran a best of 16.5 at 78mm lol. This was back in 2000.
Still a sweet turbo truck. Hope he gets it back together soon.
Well now Jon has an excuse to upgrade from that 4.8…….that sucks but that’s the way the cookie crumbles
As a car guy that's has blown his engine once or twice I can feel his pain. It's definitely not a good feeling
Woulda coulda shoulda kind of situation. Less timing, more fuel = more budget. I'm in Arizona and sometimes wonder how much of a role humidity plays with boost since water doesn't compress + water/meth injection = holes in piston. Just thinking out loud... Bummer.
LOL Only once or twice?... you must not build imports. I can install a h-series into my 95 civic with my eyes closed, just a regular Sunday to me back in 2008.
@@gulogulo9867 lmao are you really comparing a v-8 high horsepower engine to some pos Honda engine you can switch out in an hour? 🤣 Maybe when you grow up and work on better engines and cars you'll understand! 🤡
@@gulogulo9867 wow you're so cool, you run terrible builds that blow up. I aspire to be like you one day.
@@Jake-vc1jd well I was young had a wife, a kid, and a budget. A H series cost about $200 and a built H series was about $3000. What can I say stock Honda's don't like producing 600+hp and living on the redline, but walking away from Lamborghini Gallardo with the wife and kid was always priceless. If you aspire to be like me one day you must put down your cell phone, get a job, and move out from your mommy's basement.
Hey have you done any videos on the 6.6l l8t. Really thinking about getting one to put in my obs.
Pretty even match it seems. No prep, you guys would have had a race! Bummer for the BB Truck, seen the smoke and was hoping that it was just a pushed head gasket, but not if its locked. That just sucks.... but that little 4.8 held its ground for a while getting hit with some hard boost ramps.... You can't be mad at it.
Ouch that one hurt, his truck definitely moves out. Gotta watch the oil pressure on those stock pans
Yea he may have cavitated it.
What a bummer hopefully John gets going quickly
Dude it was still running too 😭
poor truck just wanted to keep going man
Looking forward to a launch video where you'll tweak the shocks, I'd love to learn how to launch my 4x4 with coilovers
U on Facebook? I can help u out.
@@awdss_silverado1449 I'll shoot you a message
It’s hard not to get greedy when your getting better every run.
My 2018 gmc 5.3 with a whipple makes 535tq/485hp RW on 93oct. The installer said we could do headers and a pully and bump both numbers up by about 50 but he said he would not recommend doing any more after that for reliability concerns.
I think Richard Holder tested the 4.8 to see how "MUCH" was too much in the way of Nos and Boost and I'm pretty sure it maxxed out at like 1300 HP before it shed the rods . So yea depending on clearances & miles you can easily spend whatever life is left in the 4.8 by leaning too hard on it ... I'm pretty sure you would benefit greatly with a Torque convertor upgrade .. ..
That’s a lot of power from a 4.8. Time to turbo an LM7! Lol
So sorry, John. I've been there and done that too. Smoke and clatter noises isn't what we want when we step on the go pedal.
Brent is the man!
Is that a dewalt air compressor wow nice man
Lt it's North Maine Steve do u have hp tuner reg program or the hp tuners pro? Was looking to setup w to tuners so I can start to learn how to tune my truck bone stock currently and wanna do the cam swap soon
I’d like to go back to back on draggy with my reg cab short bed Duramax with ya! Selectable 4wd with the 261xd case here.
I scaled my 95 Silverado short bed dually 454 manual 2wd at 4900lbs with me in it. I'm surprised the Copo truck is so close. I only weigh 130lbs.
Key to keeping these engines alive, is cylinder pressure. It’s easier to keep cylinder pressure lower at lower rpm’s with a properly build turbo system, than your roots style blower. You have to figure that a supercharger takes hp to drive. So a 600hp super charged motor and a 600hp turbocharged engine(talking at the wheels) are not equal. The turbo engine is not working as hard, as the supercharged engine that requires the engine to spin the blower via the accessory drive. Hope that makes sense to the layman.
He was looking for trouble pushing 20lbs of boost in a stock block 4.8 good comparison by the way
Man that boy put some work in his 4.8 runs hard
should of met up in Dallas tx. good track there to use
Really unfortunate. Luckily though it’s an LS so he should be able to find another one pretty quickly here and hopefully his camshaft is reusable
His turbo truck lites up ..... Once she gets rolling but dammn his turbo runs hard after the first few feet
2:30 what oil filter are you using ?? Seems bigger then the original one.
Using a sea level correction calculator, which is almost as bad as racing dynos but whatever its all in fun, the COPO actually wins with a 11.65@117.18 vs 11.85@118.52
Dudes truck was flying.
The elevation difference is the big factor plus im sure he put a tire on the back end
LT.... I am so curious to know what happened to Jon's truck. Keep us in the loop. Thanks.
yeah, I'll give an update as I get any new info
it blew up
Maybe something went wrong ?????
Like pushing way too much boost on the worst ls motor ever produced.
Seriously, if you are going to take the motor apart to gap the rings, swap in a 5.3 crank, some gen 4 rods and new pistons, rings and bearings.
@@davidsharp922 You are clueless lol. The 4.8L has an iron block. They are well known too be able too hold boost applications very well.
@@lovellmills7959 clueless huh? You must not have read my comment. I know it is an iron block.
Gen 3 4.8 rods are junk.
I have built hundreds of ls motors but I'm clueless right ?
You can hear the rid knocking while he was coming up on the 2 step.
I really do hate that for him. But based off those times, the copo most def won 1/8. And I feel confident U would've won a race to the 1/4 as well by atleast a car length if not more. But he would've been charging hard . Good stuff! We'll continue to get it right !
Yeah my '65 Impala with a 283 2bbl, 3.36:1 rear gears and a power glide ran about the same QM time as your bone stock 4.8 truck! Now with a 100 more cubes and a 700R4 and a 12 bolt with 3.07"1 rear gears with a posi it's about 5.5 seconds faster. Man, I couldn't even spin the tires on wet pavement with that car with the original drivetrain! LOL
But I'm thinking about tweaking the 283 and re-installing it into the Impala, the trans not so much that thing needs to stay out! Besides I gave it away already after the 383 blew up 1st and reverse gears at the track. heh heh heh. I'm thinking that 283 will run WAY more gooder as a 370, would of considered making it a 383 but a 4.00" stroker crank is out of my price range but who knows by the time I get to it?
Boy you could see that look on his face as soon as things went south - “yep we screwed it up.”
Hope John gets back together soon for a clean unobstructed rematch.
Likely butted the rings and popped a ring land, if the tune was ok..
virtual drag racing lol tech is getting so cool
not quite as cool as racing in person, but given the distance, its the next best thing
I would love to know what your DA was on those runs. I have a very similar truck. Its an 02 single cab shortbed silverado thats also all wheel drive. I have 3.73 gears vs the 4.30s you have (and I want to gear it baddd) and mine will click an 11.35 at 119.44 consistently at a 500 ish DA. Obviously I would be slower at a higher DA and wonder how close my D1 porcharger truck is to your LSA truck power wise.
According to the draggy, my DA was 5,800 feet
You can have a 6l90 built where the 5th gear can be made into a non OD and have a tcm for it.
Hard to beat that AWD on the road.
What to tuner program do u recommend
John's truck will keep up with a bone stock 70 SS chevelle in the quarter mile.
John is shifting late out of 1st. He toasted it winding it out too far. Time to upgrade to a LQ9 or a aluminum 6.0. His 400 seems solid and he's hooking well, so everything should hold together with a displacement upgrade.
He could do anything with a 4.8 or 5.3, Gen3/4 5.3 and 6.0 use same exact stroke. 4.8 and 5.3 use same exact bore. 2004+ LS are Gen 3.5 (Gen 3 Block with Gen 4 conrods)
A lot of factors to determine. You can tree him and still beat him, With a slower time. FYI
Glad you didn't blow the COPO. Total bummers John blew the budget build. 😒
He overdid it in the boost department
So something im doing with my 300 ford 6 build is tapping into the water jacket but adding an extra 2 head studs per cyl, you might want to try that with your next build
How? Most heads are designed with water jackets and runners taking up the rest of the circumference around the cylinder, plus it needs to be completely load bearing, meaning you need solid metal from the bottom side of the head bolt all the way to the deck, it doesn't need to go through a water jacket or runner (it could compress and crack the head).
Edited: edited to say I read your comment again and I assume you are drilling a hole big enough to go through the water jacket with the bolt head and using a pipe plug to seal the top hole. Hard to explain but I think I understand what you are doing.
@@stevenbelue5496 was going to go with a custom cast head for the motor so that this wasnt an issue, im finishing up on a crossflow cleveland based head for it to use 2.14? If i remember right on size cleveland valves with a nice port angle of 48 degrees on the intake side and 40 for the ehxaust
Dang sorry John. But dang you were sure putting it down
😢 took it like a champ John
Copo winner of the 1/8 but not the 1/4............. still would like to see a heads up race some day typed at 3:55 Would like to see you both do a drag week event :)
EDIT AFTER VID: It would be a hoot to see a heads up race, the COPO shoots out in front off the line and the silver/sleeper plays catch up the rest of track
Copo would win 1/4 by a car length
Don't forget the important part about racing remotely via dragging- elevation. Down in Louisiana it's basically sea level, and up in Utah where you are is significantly above - to the tune of a 20% power loss. So you're not making as much power as you would be in Louisiana, or he's making more than he would be in Utah. If y'all had met up and raced, I don't think he would have edged you out in the quarter - you likely would have kept that initial lead all the way out.
That said, it sucks that he popped something, but it happens in racing. I'm sure that between your channel and his that he'll be able to get it taken care of promptly- I'm sure there's people watching that would be able to help/contribute. Maybe someone has a 4.8 laying around that they replaced with something bigger?
That's a benefit of this community- we all understand and like to help. I'm waiting for the teardown, as well as the inevitable rematch. 😀 Possibly an actual head to head, to eliminate the variables? 😉
Question: why do you keep the tailgate closed during your runs? Is there much of a difference with it open and closed?
Myth busters did a test, not really
Lets just say its stock weight and if it's open there is a higher chance of it coming off which can disqualify you in a legit race
Your truck, with a LITTLE more, could really give turbo cars fits in the 1/8 mile. Fast turbo cars, even.
Hell yeah it would
Huh? I’d take that challenge.
My turbo stock 5.3 in my trans am runs
5.80s at double the DA that LT is at on 20#of boost (and I’ve ran 31psi on the street… ON STOCK RODS). I mph faster in the 1/8 than he does in the quarter mile….. and I consider my car slow.
He’s got a long ways before that pickup can hang with fast turbo cars.
Don’t get me wrong.. it’s a sweet truck. Tons of fun I bet.
When it breaks and the draggy still says “30” lol, unfortunate man
curious what his logs will show, totally sucks and been there. Just have to come back stronger. Cool trucks and vids nontheless.
DAMN LT, I thought it was you who broke. It always suck when it does happen but I’m still glad it wasn’t the Orange Peel….
nothing like a call out to get some action on social media. Nobody has ever called me out, I think I need to initiate the convo next build.
I know that something broke feeling all too well it usually cost a fair amount of money and sucks all the fun out of it
Was your 4.8 a Gen 3 or Gen 4? The Gen 4 has stronger connecting rods and full floating pistons capable of handling 800+ whp. Unfortunately the Gen 3 simply aren’t as strong.
Mine in the orange truck is a Gen 3, Jon's is a Gen IV.
Gen 3.5 showed up in 2004
I'd choose a super charger over turbo any day. Far more reliable, cheaper, easier to install, and can be taken off when breaks to run without unlike a turbo. As evidence by this very video. Turbos are nothing but asking for trouble at high boost, and when it blows, unlike a supercharger, youre dead with major repairs and often just end up junking the car due to the repair costs.
I'm not sure what kinda ground rules you guys set before this, but running multiple passes until you get the time you want doesn't feel like a real drag race to me. In a drag race you line up, give it your best shot and that's that, no do-overs. Either way I have that he hurt his truck, seems like a nice build that made good power. I'm sure he will build it back every stronger the second time around.
Problem is (also live in Utah) we are half the oxygen he has. We are 4,300 ft elevation. He's sea level. More oxygen bigger boom in the combustion chamber.
I felt John's pain
Can I 4wd my 2wd single cab? With those same parts?
So we doing virtual street racing now
Sad to see Memphis international raceway in the video
The look on his face 😥
When I get done with my truck we gone have to run em. Sadly I’m in Mississippi
I'll run u , I'm in ms 🤷🏼♂️
I’ve been 12,s in a stock single cab with tune gear and 100 shot
I wonder if John had ring gap in his motor? I was hoping it was just a blown head gasket, but that dead click from the starter says otherwise. Come back bigger and badder bro!!!
not sure on that one, but if not, it could def. contribute to any issues.
