I know Cat Stevens wrote it, but Rod Stewart’s version is iconic! Give it a listen! 😁
Sheryl Crow did a cover of it too….and it not bad 👍
Yep, the Rod Stewart cover is most likely the one you're thinking of when you say you've heard this in a different voice. Yusuf/Cat also did a very different sounding version of this song many years later for the movie Harold & Maude.
@@jeffmayle6776 her cover is my favorite version of the song
Rod‘s version is not superior, Rod Stewart used to be an awesome rock ‘n’ roll roller! Then all of a sudden he turned into the soft malleable paste, it was nauseating. Cat Stevens voice just fits the song correctly. Rod version is not good and Sheryl Crows is even worse.
Rod Stewart's version sooo much better.
Rod Stewart did a version of this song but Cat actually wrote it !!!!!!!
It was covered by numerous people in the 60s.
It has been covered at least 9 times between 1967 and today (ChatGPT).
Rod didn't just do a version .. He did THE version .. Great songwriting by Cat, and I do like this original a lot .. But for me, Rod did it absolutely perfectly .. It's my fave by him.
Cat wrote it and sold it to P.P. Arnold, who had a massive hit with it long before the Rod Stewart version
@@othermotte I've heard the PP Arnold version .. It's OK, but IMHO, it's not as good as Rod Stewart's .. Rod's has stood the test of time more than any other version, and is the one that is best known and gets the most airplay nowadays .. That's probably why the OP mentioned his cover and not PP Arnold's..
Wild World by Cat Stevens is a great number.
I'm working two jobs at the moment, both not usually full time but one in the daytime and one that's mostly night shifts,so as both have got busier lately I'm feeling a bit knackered at present. Luckily neither job is like how Cat describes Matthew & Son.
@rjjcms1 those horns are magic. Take care with all that work.
@@paul5589 Thanks!
Cat wrote this when he was 17.
If you've heard that line before, you might have heard it by either Rod Stewart or Sheryl Crow, both of whom have covered the song.
Both covers you mentioned are great, but I prefer Rod Stewart's version as it seems to really connect with his true emotions. I'd recommend J and Amber try Rod's version at some future date. They'll love it.
@mao2233 I definitely wasn't recommending either one of them. Amber said she thought she heard that line before. But I do agree that Rod's version is great. His was the first version I had ever heard in the 70s, even before I ever heard Cat's version.
@@magneto7930 Same here. I played Rod Stewart's two disc "Best of" album on Mercury Records to death in the 70s. This song was one of my favorites on that album. Each song on "The Best Of" showcased Rod's singing talents in a completely different setting. I still listen to it on CD. Such a good album and song.
@@mao2233Every Picture Tells a Story is an amazing album.
Yes, I've heard those two versions but never knew Cat Stevens wrote it. I don't think his version got as much air time, though it certainly deserved it.
I love his song Moonshadow. Cat Stevens brings back memories of my childhood.
Great song ✌️💗
I've been requesting Moonshadow for quite awhile now. Hopefully they'll get to it soon.
I play it every Saturday at a matinee I do in BC Canada!
Love that song!
Absolutely! Full of silver lining philosophy and whimsy.
I forgot Moonshadow, such a great song.
"Morning Has Broken" is still my favorite Cat song, but this one's a close second.
Mine is PeaceTrain.
Agree
You do realise that "Morning has Broken" is an old Christian hymn?
@@waynekasmar4401 - Yes, I know the history of it. It's from the late 1800's. Cat Stevens and pianist Rick Wakeman gave it a modern arrangement.
@@waynekasmar4401 We had to sing lots of hyms in morning assembly at junior school in the 70s and one of them was Morning Has Broken, around 1973 when I also heard Cat's version. I've always loved that song.
Please checkout Cat Stevens song, “Oh Very Young”. Beautiful, simple, but deep meaning. 😁
reportedly written in memory of Buddy Holly and inspired by Don McLean’s “American Pie”
Genius at 17 years old
Ahhhh, Moonshadow. Leaping and hopping.
THANKS, YA'LL!! Just APPRECIATE YOU, BOTH!! Cat Stevens is SO AWESOME!
Rod Stewart had a hit with this song as a follow up to Tonight’s The Night. Worth a listen. My favorite Cat Stevens tune is a minor hit called Remember The Days Of The Old School Yard.
Love Rod, but his version sucks
Rod’s cover is superior. Hate to say it
@@joemc1960This is the original and the best version
Wow, I had no idea he sang this.
I only know the Rod Stewart version.🤷♂️
Rod Stewart (1977) and Sheryl Crow (2003) each did covers that are better than the original: ua-cam.com/video/c5NRH_DxWJE/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/dK9eLe8EQps/v-deo.html
Love Cat Stevens!!
Rod Stewart hit No.1 with this in 1977 on a double A-sided single which included "I Don't Want To Talk About It". Both are wonderful songs and deserve a listen.
The Dachshund he was holding in the images was his baby. His first song (a hit) was about that dog. "I Love my Dog as Much as I Love You".
There is a movie called Harold and Maude from the early 70;s that is very very famous and Cat Steven's did the score. It is a very quirky film, you guys should check it out.
Yes great movie it has my favorite actress Ruth Gordon gotta love her❤, one of CATS earlier songs "Matthew and Son" great song👍, ❤ love Cat Stevens 😻 let's all jump on the peace train. Peace✌️ and Love❤️ Gary the forever hippie😊
Love that movie; so unique and, as you say, quirky. I have the added bonus of living in the area where the movie was made, so it was extra special to see the vistas of my youth.
"how can I tell You" is rhe somehow underrated song that will bring a tear to Ambers eye!
Love that one!!!
This is such a beautiful song. I got to hear him in person around 2016 in NYC at the Beacon Theater, he hadn't performed live for like 40-50 years. When I was a senior in HS his Tea For the Tillerman was one of those once in a lifetime albums. Your children might like it, all very poetic, fairy tale-ish, hopeful songs.
My Dad Loved Cat Stevens When I Was Growing Up, in The 90s But I Never Seen Young Pictures Of Cat Stevens, On Any Of His Albums, And I Do Believe I Heard Almost Every Album By Cat!💯
The song was also released in 1971 by Canadian singer Keith Hampshire, and it is also very good.
Glad someone mentioned it, my favourite cover of the song.
Definitely the best version of this song.
Yes, Stevens wrote it and has a great soulful voice...but...PP Arnold released a great version of it in 1967 which was a hit in the UK. She included a harpsichord which actually was a nice touch.
Rod Stewart's version in 1977 was a bigger hit for good reason. His voice matches the tune perfectly.
A couple weeks ago I suggested you dedicate 1 day a week (or a month even) to comparing versions of hits. This is a prime example. I'd love to hear your take on which version is better.
Be blessed❤
Reggae artist Marcia Griffith also did a version.
I'm surprised so many people are mentioning Rod Stewart in the comments, because I had no idea he even covered this song. I've only ever heard the Cat Stevens version. Personally, I love it. Cat's got such a great, emotional voice.
Rod's version is the best imho, and I rarely say covers are better, his voice was perfect for this song. Some lady in the 90s did a great version also. I prefer Ryan Adams version of Wonderwall to Oasis and a few others, but most of the time I prefer the original, like Dolly's *I will always Love you*
@@MrRondonmon Have you heard Keith Hampshire? Not trying to sway you but check it out if you haven't.
I was surprised, but because I'm more familiar with the Sheryl Crow version.
I've only known Rod Stewart, and it's really different vibe. Very soulful. Love Cat and knew he wrote it, but I've never heard this version. Rod's version is it for me.
Rod Stewarts version was a huge hit around the world
Rod Stewart did a cover of this song along with others. I personally like Rod's the best by far.
You must do Cat Steven's Moonshadow
Cat Stevens wrote this song, P.P. Arnold was the first to release it in 1967, Cat Stevens in 1972, Rod Stewart in 1977, and Sheryl Crow in 2003.
Thoughts and prayers to Ann Wils9n of Heart who is diagnosed with cancer, and will undergo treatments, she's a Magic Girl 🙏🙏🙏
@@robinhood2524 😧 When was this announced?
@@purplehague65Yesterday, there's a letter from her on her official social media. She hasn't said what kind and I think they got it but she will do chemo and rest etc.
The original release of this song was in early 1967, April I think, by the beautiful P.P. Arnold.
Cat Stevens recorded the song on an Album in December 1967.
I've got a lot of Cat Stevens studio albums this track is on an album I've got which l haven't played for years on a Teldec Profile LP which includes Matthew and Son and Here Comes My Baby which l think was recorded by the Tremeloes.
Yes! This song was written for Ms. Arnold to sing!
This song has been a hit for PP Arnold, Cat Stevens himself, Keith Hampshire (1973), Rod Stewart (1977), Papa Dee (1995), and Sheryl Crow (2003).
My favorite version of this song is a live version by Linda Ronstadt from a TV show in the 1970's, I don't think she ever actually recorded it. Her live cover is on You Tube & it's absolutely stunning & got a standing ovation.
Trouble by Cat Stevens is absolute perfection
You are right there is an incredible number of songs from Cat Stevens that were top notch. There are entire albums that didn't have a dud track on them Teaser and the Firecat, Mona Bone Jakon, Tea For The Tillerman, Buddha and the Chocolate Box, Catch Bull at Four are albums I bought when they came out and still listen to. His song writing is phenomenal.
Teaser and the Firecat (my favourite) and Tea for the Tillerman are his two best l think. Buddha and the Chocolate Box was the first album of his l bought, probably my third favourite with the rarely mentioned Sun/C79 an absolutely fantastic track. Mona Bona Jakon, Catch Bull at Four, Foreigner and Numbers too still very enjoyable, but went off the boil a bit with Izitso.
Why does nobody ever mention or request, "Sad Lisa" ??? .. It's my very favourite song by Cat .. So haunting and beautiful .. It's an absolute gem, and deserves far more recognition !
There are so many fantastic songs from different artists l think are completely ignored. It's the 'deep cuts' l usually enjoy the most. One of those is Sun/C79 from Cat Stevens, absolutely love that one!
@@keithjones7390 Hadn't heard that one for a while .. Just re-listened .. Pretty cool song.
@@wayne_twentyfive Another lesser known track l like, well I've never seen it mentioned is 18th Avenue from Catch Bull at Four. One of his 'edgier' songs again.
@@keithjones7390 I'd pretty much forgotten that one .. But on listening, yes, another goodie.
Only known Stewart's version, never knew Stevens wrote it
PP Arnold version my favourite
Agreed
Definitely agree. I love Pat Arnold’s version ❤
Canadian singer and DJ Keith Hampshire did an excellent cover version of "The First Cut Is The Deepest" in '73. Keith also had the '73 hit "Daytime Night-Time".
My favorite version is by Canadian Keith Hampshire. Most soulful version I've heard, you should check it out.
P.p arnold ( female) version is great. ( cat Stevens wrote it this his his version, but hers was released first)
He was still a kid 😊 Yep, he's still touring
My favorite Cat Stevens song is Morning Has Broken. Simple and beautiful.
I did not know Cat Stevens wrote this! I’m excited to hear his OG version.
Canadian Keith Hampshire made a huge hit with this song in the 60s. Walks all over Rod Stewart's version. And now that I've heard Cats version, it kicks Cats ass too!!!
When are they going to react to "If I Laugh" and "Oh Very Young", Those two are breathtaking!
Two of my favourites there!
One of Cats earlier songs also check out "Matthew and Son" ❤ it great, 😅 let's all jump on the peace train. Peace✌️ and Love❤ your forever hippie Gary😊
MANY other artists have covered his song with their own style and pace. Very popular lyrics, timeless !!
Wild World is an incredible song!
Great tune. Yes, check out the Rod Stewart version. Rod's version is probably my favorite. Thanks.
Did not know Cat Stevens did the original. Always learning on this channel. Rob Squad is awesome. Love the smokey eyes Amber.
I'll be 62 this month and up until a year or so ago, I thought Rod Stewart's version of this was the original, and I love it, but I love Cat's original so much more. Thanks for sharing.
PS: If you haven't covered his mega hit "Wild World", you owe it to yourselves to do so. It's easily my favorite Cat Stevens joint.
P.P. Arnold is credited as the first solo artist to have ever recorded the song other than Cat. To my ears Ms. Arnold has the definitive version although Sheryl Crow is a close second. P.P. was originally one of Ike and Tina Turner's Ikettes but Ike fired and abandoned her during a tour of England as she was tired of his abuse of her and the other the back up singers. She stayed in Europe and developed a very successful solo career. They say living well is the best revenge and in her case she did very well.
The Cat is one of the greatest ever!!! Awesome. His career has to distinct periods, in the first, when he recorded this song, he was more of a pop star, the music had sweeping arrangements, more layered and intricate sounds and instruments, singing some songs about love like any pop star of any age, although the majority were not about love, and the second period, after he was in hospital for almost a year, I believe with tuberculosis, when his sound became more acoustic and his poetry tackled more existential and new age themes that brought him closer to the hippie movement. No love songs that I can remember, but I can be wrong. His look also changed from a more produced image to a more hippieish style, he grew his hair and beard and left behind the more stylized clothing for a more casual wear. The music he produced in both periods is, however, brilliant, both as a pop singer and a singer songwriter. In the mid seventies he would eventually blend musically the two periods, but always with the same awesomeness and genius. One of my all time favorites.
His albums Teaser and the Firecat (my favourite) and Tea for the Tillerman are the best he recorded l think. Buddha and the Chocolate Box which was the fiirst CS album l bought is very enjoyable too, Oh Very Young a beautiful song, but little mentioned Sun/C79 is one of my favourite songs of his.
A classic song that multiple stars have sung. Such a great song!!
Wow never knew Cat Steven’s wrote this, I always thought Rod Stewart wrote it. That’s probably where you could have heard it, that’s why it’s in the back of your mind.
FINALLY!!! You react to this song by Cat
This song has been recorded by so many people. Check out the Keith Hampshire version.
Always liked Cat. Have never heard this one before. I like it!
I know this is the original, but as a Canadian I grew up with Keith Hampshire's rendition.
Rod Stewart & Sheryl Crow also have their version of this gem of a song. Good one here👌
Love this song, stayed with me for a very long time! Pity we can't all stay young.
I've never heard this before, i've only ever heard Rod Stewart's version. But this is amazing, thank you for sharing, wishing you both well and sending peace
PP Arnold purchased this song from Cat for £30.00, and she recorded it first, pretty sure she still owns it.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. He was a teenager when he wrote this, which I find remarkable.
This is from his early, rising British pop star period which was cut short by a lengthy bout of tuberculosis from which he finally emerged the introspective folkie Americans came to know and love.
Yes, his change from teen pop star to serious folk artist occurred during his long convalesence from tuberculosis and a collapsed lung. The song that best illustrates this is "Trouble". Nothing like a near death experience to give you a little introspection.
The first well known version of this was by P P Arnold (female, USA soul singer) who had a big UK hit with it in 1967 before even Cat Stevens had released it on his album. Still the best version as well.
This is a great song!❤️✌🏻🎶
This has been covered many times, but you can't beat the original. Good find.
Rod Stewart and Sherrill Crowe both had hits with this song! He wrote it and recorded very young!
Did not know this was a Cat Stevens song - PP Arnold sang it so beautifully.
Have you listened to "Matthew and Son" by Cat? It's a true workers' lament and one of his first hits.
Then follow it up with Rod Stewart's version.
Agree! Rod's version is amazing!
Sheryl Crow also has a nice cover.
Cat Stevens! I remember my friend calling me and saying to come over right away..she had discovered a new great album...and we fell in love with Cat Stevens!!!!!
One of my favorite songs by Cat Stevens off of Catch Bull at Four is O Caritas. Not one of his best known, but it is a great song.
He was just a kitten! Music industry promoting him as a teen pop-star.
John Denver:
Take Me Home Country Roads
is a beautiful song, lots of feeling and a classic!!
can’t believe you guys haven’t done it yet!!
He was very young when he wrote and recorded this song. He had a different look and sound when he hit it big a couple of years later with the amazing Tea For The Tillerman album. Please listen to the title track. Another suggestion is If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out which was featured in the movie Harold And Maude. Lots more to check out.
Yusef Islam he changed his name to in 1978. Please play some Shinedown, symptom of being human, daylight, devil, cut the cord. Thanks
PP Arnold had a great version. Beautiful soulful voice.
Hi guys! A really sweet Cat song is Moonshadow. Amber, love your makeup you look stunning! Gorgeous eyes! Hello from sunny Florida 🌞🌴
I loved hearing this in the 60s. Still do. PP Arnold did a superb version of this song.
Written by Cat Stevens, covered most famously by Rod Stewart in 1977 and by Sheryl Crow in 2003.
Not to mention P P Arnold in 1967.
Great song.glad you enjoyed it ❤
Two Cat Stevens songs that I've been asking you to do from the beginning are "Tuesday's Dead" and "Wild World". A couple others are "Another Saturday Night" (an old Sam Cooke cover) and "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out"
Cat used to say about this song when playing it: this is now Rod Stewart! :D I like his version more. Try Mathew and Son, his very first single (I think). He started with pop, then nearly died and was for a long time in hospital, was reborn and took on folk music.
Beautiful song 🎵
I love that you went with this version first. Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow did covers, but
this is ear candy at its finest.
Lots of people talking about Rod Stewart's version. The most likely one you heard was by P P Arnold. Her version has been used in ads and movies.
You have to know that's Cat Stevens before Owlsley shook his hand and gave him a ticket for that cosmic train
Cat Steven’s was known as a young pop singer with several top 10 hits, like Mathew and Son, that were just pure pop. It was really when he released the incredible album Tea for the Tillerman that he launched into another stratosphere. He was still a teenager when he recorded this. ✌️
Young Cat! Like "Here Comes My Baby", he was teen when he did theses songs! I think you would both really like "Hard-Headed Woman" from the same album as Father & Son. His songwriting is so good. Thanks for this one guys.
Father and son is his greatest
❤I know Sheryl Crow's version an always thought she wrote the song. I love that Cat Stevens wrote these words lyrics. Great recommendation.
You should check out Billy Joel Goodnight Saigon, for 4th of July❤ 🇺🇸
I agree. Some of us have mentioned this to them before.
pp arnolds 1967 version is easily my favourite. It was huge in the clubs.
Did not know Cat Stevens wrote this; I only knew Rod Stewart sang it.
I’m going to say it again, I wish you would do some back to back covers. Theres a lot of great songs out there, great artists covering other great artists 👍
One of my favorite songs! Rod Stewart’s version is great too
I know Cat Stevens wrote the song and sung it here, but I heard Rod Stewart's cover first and still like his version better.
Because I know you love to learn about the icons..Cat Stevens now goes by the name Yusuf Islam. Great song and great interpretation by you both! 😊
I past Cat Stevens once in a Manchester club on the stairs as I was leaving, while, he was attempting to enter. Very trendy in dress, jeans and black leather jacket. The doormen refused him entrance, even though he informed the door of his name. To the best of my memory this would have been in the late sixties.
I miss Mr Saxaphone man from the wall 😂😊😊😊 best wishes from England
I love this original version! I come back to this version a few times each year. Sheryl Crow did a great cover of this (for the Rod Stewart fans to check if they haven’t).
Cat Stevens’ song Moon Shadow is embedded in my childhood memories! Try it!
