Really well done! I have worked at Epitaph since 1991, and this really brought back a ton of memories. Can’t wait for the second installment! FYI, Fat Mike wrote a song about me called Jeff Wears Birkenstocks.

Too cool. It's quite a difficult song to play well (for me at least) because of the palm-muted rhythm guitar part.

The first NOFX song I heard was “We threw gasoline on the fire and now we have stumps for arms and no eyebrows” off of the Punk o Rama 3 comp in 98. From there I had a bootleg copy of So long and thanks for all the shoes on cassette that throughly hooked me in and THEN I moved over to listening to punk in drublic and the greater back catalog.

Guys, NOFX literally has an autobiography written by every member that details all of this and is a very easy and very fun read. I highly recommend it, especially if you found this video interesting.
This video was very well done as well, though, and I plan on checking out more of your videos for sure. But the book gets deep into the craziness of their careers and is crazy how much they went through.

Heavy Petting Zoo was the first NoFX album i listened to back in 96. This skater kid sat behind me in science class and he had the CD. He asked if i knew who they were, i said no. I became a fan that day.

I remember when punk in drublic came out.
I was on furlough from rehab and me, and this skater kid made our way into the record store.
    If it was like, wtf?
I had been into punk for a bit by that time.
In 93 rancid self titled was realeased. It blew my mind.
Never heard a punk band quite like them.
Then a year later nofx does the sams thing.
Then a year later outcome the wolves.
And many many more awesome records.

Damn I love NOFX. I’d heard the name mid to late 90’s and found a used copy of Heavy Petting Zoo. I’d heard the name and the album cover was so wildly inappropriate in the most hilarious of ways, I knew it was time to check them out. Changed my life forever. I dove in to punk hard.

Love your channel, just today I was in a gas station ( Raul Montana)and rancid was playing, I told the young 18 year old kid behind the counter that I appreciate him playing Rancid he insisted that it was minor threat, I had to slow him down and let him know that he’s going down the right path but there is a plethora of information for him to go through I’ve been listening to punk since I was 11 in 92 and still are navigating the great bands of original street punk. I guess I will direct him to your channel

Funny thing about I Heard They Suck Live back in the 90's: I was about 14 when I discovered NOFX (Thanks to Punk O Rama 1). It was after Punk in Drublic and before Heavy Petting Zoo. Once I got into them, I really got into them. Eventually getting all previous records. But here's the thing: I wasn't really sure what they actually looked like. Mystic, Liberal Animation, Ribbed, Longest Line, Whitetrash, Punk in Drublic: none of these albums had too much to offer as far as photos of the band other then confusing little snips of pictures.
So when I Heard They Suck Live came out I knew every single song (well, basically) and listened to it nonstop. But the whole time I never had a clear image of who these guys were singing and playing these songs. It's kind of a weird concept these days but pre-google and pre-youtube there really was no other way for a kid in a small rural town of Pennsylvania to get info let alone photos of punk bands like NOFX. So for the longest time, my favorite band was shrouded in mystery until the late 90's when I finally got my hands on 10 Years of Fucking Up. It was totally bizarre seeing them actually playing these songs that I knew. Even at that time, Heavy Petting Zoo and So Long would come out and add to the mystery because they didn't have pictures either. Finally in 1998 I'd see them live for the first time in Philly with the Bouncing Souls (another band I loved and had almost no concept of what they looked like) and I saw what they actually looked like and it was mindblowing. Yeah, they basically looked like four dudes in a punk band, but after so many years of mystery it was amazing to see them actually playing the songs I had grown to love.
Great video, my man. Looking forward to the next!

Okay, holy s**t , as much as I love the transformation of the punk scene in the 90's... I was expecting the deep dive into the history NOFX had back then. But, the shout-out to the likes of Samiam and the like blew me away. I didn't think that bands like that were still on anyone's radar. I mean, it makes sense, considering your depth of knowledge, and you playing with Diesel Boy and all... That being the reason I keep coming back... Keep on doing what you're doing brother. You're probably the only one keeping the true history of punk alive. Hats off to you man... ✌️ Looking forward to part two! P.S. thanks for wearing the NUfaN shirt. Tells all you need to know.

It was 1995, I'm ten years old and I'm hanging with some of my parents friend's kids that were pretty cool in my parent's party bus while they were off getting drunk in a boat or something. They were three brothers, one younger, one my age and one older. The older brother was this cool skateboarder, and he asked if we could use the tape deck deck on the bus. He had three tapes, Rancid's ...And Out Come the Wolves, Pennywise's Unknown Road, and Nofx's Punk and Drublic. He ended up forgetting those tapes in the bus so copied them all starting a life long love if punk. The first time I was allowed to go to a show alone with my friends was Orlando Warped Tour in 2000 where I saw Nofx for the first time and I was able to catch them one last time at the same venue for the final time.

First NOFX was So Long and I probably got it a year or so after it came out? I know I got into NOFX before Pump Up the Valuum came out; not sure if The Decline was out yet or not because this was pre-internet (for me) and it was just what the record store had in stock. Was really introduced to the idea of a band called NOFX through Operation Ivy because there was a photo of Dave Mello's drum kit that had a NOFX sticker on it and at that point, I was finding bands via the liner note thank you's and stickers that bands would rock.

I can't exactly remember what the first music I heard by NOFX was anymore, but I do remember hearing a little in high school ('94 - '98) and the first time I really started paying attention to Fat Wreck was with Propagandhi's How To Clean Everything came out. I know that when I started really digging into NOFX was when a radio station in Winnipeg banned "Kill All The White Man" in 2005. I was a cub reporter at the time and so got an interview with Fat Mike for a story in a Canadian alt-news weekly. I had already done a lot of reviews of Fat Wreck albums, but that was when I really started digging in to NOFX. I've since written about the band quite a bit for several mags and had a great time doing it.

I'd heard a few songs off Ribbed when it came out and thought they were an okay band. Then I heard a super pretentious music snob at my school going on about how Punk In Drublic was the most unlistenable non-musical awful thing ever recorded, and I had to give it a serious listen. I loved the record, but it was I Heard They Suck Live that made me a life long fan. Your point at the end about the intangible personality factor of the band is absolutely spot on. They are not just punk music, they are punk through and through. It always makes me laugh when I read comments from "punks" in online forums saying NOFX aren't punk...cool story, bro. @the punk historian, this is the first video I've seen on your channel. I couldn't help but think "where do i know this guy from?" Then after subscribing I looked at your other videos and wanted to kick myself when I realized you were playing with Diesel Boy. Greg and I shared an apartment in Oakland in the late 90s and I've helped lug his Amp around a few times. You are a great addition to the band, and I'm enjoying your videos. Hope to catch you fuys at a show soon, work on the guys to come down to the Central Coast CA. See ya.

Was fist introduced to NoFx in '93. My best friend's older brother was in a local punk band PLY. They made a skate video of them traveling all over CA to skate and just generally fucking around and partaking in the devil's lettuce (strictly for medical purposes), part of which was set to Johnny Appleseed. We thought it was the coolest thing on the planet at like 12-13 and it pretty much cemented our own similar path.
People used to give me so much shit for loving NoFx during that weird time in the late 90s early 2000s where there was that outbreak of elitist punks that only listened to "real punk"... Whatever the fuck that is. Would claim NoFx were sellouts or posers and would immediately be shut down with a "How? How have they sold out? What makes them posers? Nice fucking misfits leather jacket."
    Weird times lol!

Great stuff! Really appreciate your work. NOFX is the band of my life. I was born in 1983 and in some way, when I discovered them for good (Leave it Alone was the first song, but I started to be a real fan after The War on Errorism), I felt I was growing up with them. You are totally right, it was never about the music only. There are lots of sh*tty songs they made, but I love them for being themselves all along. In June I am going for their Final Tour concert in Berlin and can't wait for that. This is a good time to say goodbye to fans and get some closure. Although, they are not splitting, right?
All time favorites of mine: Linoleum, The Decline, The Separation of Church and Skate, Decom-Poseur, Generation Z, Doors and Fours.
    Waiting for part II

How I discovered Nofx does drummer come over to jam with me back in those days I'd swap back up to guitar most of the time I'm a drummer myself but I'd never heard of them up until this point but the thing about it is. The guy had a cassette tape it was blank cassette on it no writing on it or anything like that. And I'm totally digging it it was heavy petting zoo. Which is hands down the greatest punk rock album of all times nothing even comes remotely close to being as good as heavy petting zoo. But he was telling me that it was his band. Which I thought good Lord this dude is so super sick on this album. Especially since freedom like a shopping cart was the first song he played. So I thought I wonder why he's not playing any super sick ass drum shit like what I'm hearing on this album. So a few days later I played it for my weed dealer and I told him yeah I know the drummer this is a local band. He started laughing and said no it's not it's Nofx. So that's how I got turned on to Nofx.

So much useful informations (filling the holez) in this, for the first time looks like skip it /nature is calling... beein a typical NOFx victim (firstly in 14, then my band turned into how THEY sound, and kept it still - let´s live our lives c´mon everybody), is a way to be a little critical about... just for the sake of bein´ ´n´ havin´ an opportunity to have my commentary next to the man´s who´s shoe style influences one of the most influential punkrock album´s tracklist...
guess, there must be a crew of more insiders between bands nearest friends who check great videos like these, and their positive?/negative? effects on NOFX´s "thatness of spreading". Well then, buddy, I enjoyed. Can´t wait to see second part

    • @zemrecords7264
      @zemrecords7264 4 місяці тому

eh. maybe a little wrong seems that comment from me. I meant when they... when I heard an quite actual punk-o-rama 4 with kids from the k-hole song. then bought so long.. that was a time when they came and I saw em in 2011. They started with Perfect government. shit that was not meant don´t get me wrong. i enjoyed. ok time to shut up.
