I discovered them in 1981 and I would never believed 6 years later my band Leeway would open for them.....Leeway played roughly 100 shows with the original members along with the other vocalists who performed and/or recorded with them. Leeway did 10 or the 12+ weeks on the 1989 Quickness tour in the US
I'll never forget being graced by them I'm still trying to perform despite fighting cancer for over 2 years now I have such fond memories.....BAD BRAINS should be in The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame there will never be such a transforming musical entity like Bad Brains....period*

Yooooo, I saw y’all open for them in Chapel Hill in like…1988? I had been a Bad Brains fan for years already and had come across Leeway as a DJ at the college radio station WQFS. “Be Loud” was in heavy rotation. Anyway, that was a great show, despite the Brains being very late showing up and HR having gotten stung by a bee on his eye while the bus was stalled out on the side of the road (which was what we heard). Stay strong, man…whoop that cancer’s ass.

I’ve been a Bad Brains fan for 37 years and this is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on them. They are the inventors of Hardcore, the biggest and most successful band that was heavily influenced by Bad Brains is Rage Against the Machine. Zach’s stage presence is very HR influenced and both he and the bass player from Rage Against the Machine have said that they are big Bad Brains fans. They fused Punk, Hardcore, Metal, Funk and Hip Hop together and have a message and meaning to their music as well.

Saw the Brains many times in the 80s, in NYC, CT, and NJ. I was 14/15 years old during the Rock Hotel shows (live shot used in I Against I) but I did get to experience the Brains at CBGBs, the Ritz, Sundance and the Anthrax. Yet the most memorable show was when HR and Earl were performing as Human Rights at The World with opening band Social Distortion at The World (LES nightclub by Stevens Lewis of The Tunnel / Club USA / Paladium). Hands down the most religious experience of an concert I have ever attended, so hard to explain how important that gig was on the way I grew to view mankind as an adult. I’ll never forget that feeling!

Saw them at the Manchester Academy 1 on the same tour, I actually taped it on a walkman. Strangely for a 'conscious' band they had the most varied merchandise I've ever seen at any gig I've been to, there were several different designs of t shirt, stickers, badges, patches, posters & hoodies. However it was all very reasonably priced, from memory the t shirt I bought cost £8, less than you'd usually see at gigs in 1989, I sold it on ebay about 10 years ago for nearly £150.

@@dobr4481 Oh it was Manchester International the very next night. We tried to get tickets but it too like Hudds was sold out. The whole Quickness tour sold out. But like you say back then tickets and merch were reasonably priced. Especially bands in the hardcore scene. They would never rip fans off back then. Saw Fugazi at Leeds Poly that same year in 1989 and it was just £3 per person on the door.... but.... you had to bring some cans of food for the homeless. I was a skint student so I nipped back home and raided my mum's cupboard! Haha! But now, like you say, can sell it all on Ebay for a profit. And why not? I wish I'd saved a lot of the stuff back then.

Man. You guys are OG punks. I'm still kinda proud of seeing some of the now big and famous bands when they were just starting to pop in the 90s. Like Primus in 93. Or Ween back when no one knew who they were. Back when you had to see them in a dingy warehouse looking place with a pit. That same place is still there but now it's all stylized punk rock. With like, stencilled art and faux graffiti. Lol. There's something that's just fundamentally wrong with fake stylized shabbiness. "You smell that? How authentic. They have that genuine urine smell piped in at great expense."

He was never far from his bible and was quick to quote passages . He even mentored and helped my recreational band (Violent Tumor ) with some of the nuances of Punk music writing . i feel that the world should make allowance for his current aberrant behavior given his enormous contribution and influence on the music industry as well as society in general.

Another great video, Jack! As someone who followed Bad Brains since the 80s, it's fascinating to hear your thoughts in a more recent context. I graduated high school in SoCal in '82 and went to the northeast US for college, so I was able to see the differences between the various hardcore cultures. There was tremendous crossover of musical genres in those days, and kids with various tastes were always contributing to broadening the spectrum. Peter Tosh was very popular, so reggae was not unfamiliar; it just hadn't been presented in the way that Bad Brains did. Your observations on diversity are spot on. Outside of DC, most of the audiences I was a part of looked the same (white male). But when I made it to DC in early '83, I was blown away by the number of black men and women in the crowd. That show was amazing and I was hooked on Bad Brains for the next fifty years! Keep up the good work.

I've seen Bad Brains many times through the years from NY to Tijuana, MX. The first time I saw them was in February of 1990. It was in Philadelphia at a place called Revival. By far the most hectic show I have seen to this day. They had the crowd so riled up that the walls were condensating in the middle of winter. It was the original lineup except that Mackie was drumming. They were the undisputed masters of stage presence and engaging the crowd. There wasn't a safe space in the house except for the back corners which were piled up with coats anyways. HR was still young enough to be doing backflips on stage and taking swan dives off the speaker stacks without missing a beat on the mic.

Bad Brains just spoke to me in a way that no other music had done up to the point in which I found them. This music was instrumental in my mid teens and early twenties, and a friend and I are doing a small side project together that's aiming to very much be an homage to bands like Bad Brains and Minor Threat. The Ramones were to the 70s what The Bad Brains were to the 80s. I would rank HR as one of the greatest frontmen in Rock. As a singer he's up there alongside Ian Gillan, Freddie Mercury, Dio. The Bad Brains in their prime was a force of nature and set the blueprint for how modern hard rock music is played. I would go out on a limb and say that if they didn't exist, the 90s renaissance of punk/metal/heavy music wouldn't have happened.

I got into Bad Brains in my 1st year of high school, '86-'87, through a new friend who was a huge Cro-Mags and BB fan. A couple listens to I Against I was all I needed, and then equally loved the purer hardcore of Rock For Light and the self-titled album. "Coptic Times" is still probably my all-time favorite HC song, purely for the incalculable power it contains musically- I'm not too into mentions of the bible, to be honest.
I had the unbelievable experience to catch them live, all four 'classic' members touring as Soul Brains, after I moved to DC (show was probably '02 or '03, at the 9:30 Club) and they were exhilarating. Which is saying something, as my abiding impression of HR was that he was dressed- and acted- like a homeless/imbalanced person. But the band floored me in every other respect. Perhaps the only comparable live performance I ever caught of old punk was also in DC, when Joe Strummer came through with the Mescaleros and played around 3 Clash songs... possibly the most emotional moment of my life (no, I don't have any kids.)
As with many others at the time, I think it's important to maintain perspective of their social progressivity. Prime example being their apparent homophobic views in the 80s, most obviously documented in "Don't Blow No Bubbles" on Quickness, which both tarred and feathered homosexuality, as well as embraced that nasty trope that it's a 'choice' and praying to a higher power can 'heal' someone thus 'afflicted.' As much as some things change, they still stay the same.

Things changed when I bought a Nintendo DS and got gifted a flash card with 30~ games on it. One of em' was a tony hawk game. I was playing it and having some good fun with the volume barely audible. Banned in D.C. comes on, barely audible as I said, and I can just make out that there's some intense shit going on with the music. I listen closely and I'm baffled at how great it was.
We did a cover of that exact song a few years later with the band I was in, Latest Fashion (recording still available on bandcamp :)). That's my story with Bad brains.
Ooooh I got a lil bonus. I was interviewed on local radio on "the punk day" which apparently is a thing. They asked what music I'd recommend to someone interested in punk. I just said "bad brains." It just felt like such an obvious answer.

I first discovered the bad Brains a few months before they released I against I. The first song I heard was riot. And it blew my fcking mind. Back then you couldn't go into a record bar and buy a copy of rock for light. The way we got music was through taped copies. Some kid in DC or NYC would go to a show and buy a demo and then make copies and pass them around to his friends. Then those kids would make copies and so on. Eventually one of those copies made its way to Durham NC . Then a few months later I actually did find I against I in a school kids records. Then me and some friends rode up to Richmond to see them play , I think it was with agnostic front and the exploited. It was the greatest show I had ever seen. It changed my life. Didn't get to see them again until the 90s and I was really disappointed when HR kept hurling insults at everyone and trying to start fights with every white kid with a shaved head. Bad Brains always one of my favorites band. High up on the list. There is a band from Argentina “Todos Tus Muertos” who I believe take a lot if inspiration from Bad Brains mixing Hardcore sound with reggae but also a lot of latin and afrocentric beats. The album Dale Aborigen being the perfect example. Some of the later albums veer more into the reggae sound but still dropping some heavy sounds. They are a band I can’t help but recommend to people when I get a chance to.
