Ok, imagine this. Youre a 15 year old girl whos grown up listening to Rancid. Your mum is a huge fan of them and goes to see Lars side band 'The Old Firm Casuals'. Then mum goes out for a smoke in the alley and who is there to share a Marlboro? Yep, Lars. He phoned my daughter and said 'Hey Holly, its Lars..' and she immediately got on the bus to Newcastle and we smuggled her into the pub through the back door to see him. Made our year. Lovely guy. I was a gibbering wreck but my god, what a guy. Adore Rancid. Lars especially.

FUGAZI is absolutely unparalleled…Saw them live one time!!! 37 songs they played…Holy SHIT!!! No backdrop, no light show, a couple small amps mic’d up and a couple tree lamps, drums and unadulterated pure talent and aggression…5$ was the ticket price…Absolutely unforgettable…

ok here’s my story. I discovered rancid in 95 when I was 15 and MTV europe had a „punk sunday“ goin on. I was already into green day at that time. but on this punk sunday they showed the music video for „salvation“. I liked it but was more hooked when they played the video for „leave it alone“ by NOFX.
It took 3 more years until I bought my first rancid album which was „life won‘t wait“ of course in 1998.
from then on I was hooked.

Great video, I'm from the old school and been a punk since 1978 so I've been lucky enough to see some of the best. Rancid in my opinion are the best punk/ska band still going today and I don't think they will be beaten any time soon 🤘PTID 🙌🏼

Many thanks for the effort and as a fellow Washingtonian it is really cool to have you for these rundowns, especially the more local local ones. Kudos

I first heard Rancid when they released their Salvation video on MTV. Soon found out that it was a couple of the Op Ivy dudes 🤯 I got to see Rancid live in '94 or '95 when they were still touring clubs. Best show I ever saw.

My favourite one is rancid 2000 album . I got into rancid just by chance . Back in the day of mtv . I saw the video to ruby soho and that was it I was hooked . Was super excited when the 2000 one come out I loved every song on it . And rancid to this day from way back in 1994 is one of my most listened to bands

I got into Rancid after hearing that tiny snippet of Brad Logan on South Park - something about the guitar tone and Lars’s buzz saw vocals got me so hyped. I bought the Chef Aid cd from my friend on the school bus so I could get the full track and I was hooked - bought the 2000 self titled soon after. Love that band so much

I was around for the original punk scene. I'm nearly 66 now and still into punk. I first heard Rancid in about 97 or 98. Time Bomb was the first song I heard and they reminded me of the Clash so I was intrigued. I started listening to more of their songs and I was hooked. I've seen them live multiple times including at PRB last year -- my first time attending that event. I'll return this year too. I'm now a part-time concert reviewer for eastportlandblog and have been since 2011. I cover a lot of the punk/ska bands that come to Seattle where I live. I covered PRB last year and as mentioned, plan to this year.

Solid vid, bro. I'm sitting next to my 'Give Em The Boot' poster while i watch it. Definitely one of the very most important bands in my life. Op Ivy's Energy was the first album i bought as a kid, and i quickly went back to the store and got a copy of Wolves. They drilled into my DNA, and have never been pulled from heavy rotation in my listening routine.
Keep these great vids coming, bud, and I'll keep watching!

Insanely in depth and excellent retrospective on Rancid. I knew I had to watch this today as soon as it popped up!
Rancid are definitely one of my "Go To" punk bands when I'm up for some more chill / laid back stuff. Was never a fan of Ska but these guys are way more diverse than just Ska riffs. Thank God. Lol.
My favorite albums are probably their debut self-titled, Out Come The Wolves, Let's Go, Life Won't Wait, and Honor Is All We Know.
Troublemaker was pretty good when it came out too, got a LOT of plays in my car haha.

Im an old school Agnostic Front/Cro Mags/Madball guy but Im not so far up my own old ass to not realize that punk grew and crucially has to always grow. New/newer bands are needed for the front lines so to speak. Cheers

My fav is RANCID 1 or Out Come the Wolves. But their first 5 records are all amazing.
First Rancid record I heard and bought was Let’s Go. I was 15.
Personally I think they fell off after 5 but there are some hits in there. I can’t listen to them front to back like the first 5 records though.
I really liked Transplants. I was in college by then.
A poets Life is how I feel in love with The Aggrolites.
But what I really wish and what keeps me up at night and haunts my dreams…. that f ing beard. I’d pay good money to have someone hold him down and chop it off
    See ya in the pit

When I was 10, my uncle Andy introduced me to bad religion, blowing my mind, and showing me a whole new world of music. When op ivy came out, and was handing me the cassette shortly after. So when Rancid broke, I had a new band. At 16, rancid and Bad religion played in San Bernardino, and it was my first punk show, my first show alone, and I was hooked. Never one to shy away from an open mind and critical thinking, I'm now 44 and still listening. Thanks for this, great trip down memory lane

Good timing! Ive been on a Rancid tear since the turn of the year, but yknow, ive owned Rancid albums since 95, almost 30years. Nuts.
So many of Tim and Lars' side acts are phenomenal too. Really, to appreciate Rancid you HAVE to listen to their other work, and then their progenies; Dropkick, Distillers, Interupters.
Fucking Op Iv is transcendental, timeless. Energy is still, 25 years later, my favorite album to wake up too or listen to first thing.
Op Iv is back too, under the name DOOM Regulator. They just released their first song.
The Transplants are fucking S tier. Their first album i consider one of the best proto/punk there is.
Lars and the Bastards, i mean, how could anyone hate The Viking?
I have yet to listen to the Armstrongs, tho i am intrigued. I think Billy Jo can write decent songs but at the same time, ive always thought he was kinda cringe. Idk why, its just a me thing, he's obviously been mad successful.
I feel like Rancid, Nofx and Bad Religion were/are all nexus bands that spawn genres in their own right. Like Dead Kennedys, The Stooges and Fugazi did before the 3 of them really broke.

Funny how Rancid 2000 was considered less accessible, but it was my first Rancid album. I've heard of them when I was a kid and maybe saw some music videos, but didn't listen to them. There was a Vans Off the Wall compilation that had Black Hawk Down on it along with some other Epitaph and Hellcat bands on it, and that's when something connected. I looked for the album that had Black Hawk Down on it and got it. I remember the day too. It was at the Sound Shop at our mall. My friend and I went to the movies after. It was a shit movie. I think it was the Nutty Professor sequel. We went home, and I popped it in. This was a different friend than the one who gave me the compilation, and he didn't care for ut. Thought the songs were too short. I loved the frenetic energy.

Your mention at 5:56 totally took me back to early 2000's when I was talking to this girl I had been talking to from all the damn way in Mississhitty who just happened to be sewing on her homemade Tiger Army patch. Thought nothing of it til I got into the city(NYC) later that day to meet up with a homie who apparently, with his g/f, wound up getting chased off the block by some street vendors, kinda like drug dealer turf; and so with him MIA, I looked through the Village Voice (RIP!) for any shows going on and what do I see? The Distillers w/ Tiger Army opening at the Knitting Factory! To add to the crazy coincidence I even wound up helping them, T.A., load in their gear. There's something I gotta say I really miss about shows back in the day, helping bands load their gear and scoring entry. 😬

I seen Rancid and Dropkick Murphy in San Bernardino in 2017 at “it’s not dead fest 2” (shit name for a festival I know) along with GBH, the adicts, Murpheys Law, Reagan youth, and guttermouth it was dope Rancid did an encore and had dropkick Murphy come out and they sang Folsom prison blues together. I stayed in the pit the whole time for both their sets and it was an exhilarating but also a terrifying, brutal tornado of armpits and flinging appendages. I got separated from my friends because somebody picked me up and the crowd carried me to the stage, Lost the shirt I was wearing (someone tore it off) my wallet and my phone and got a black eye from some hardcore chicks elbow. 100% worth it 10/10 would do it all again anyday.

One of my favorite bands of all time. Even after being into DIY/crusty scene for a lot of years (where it ain't hip to like Rancid :/) they were always a band I appreciated for their solid songwriting and skill. Got to see them live a couple of times on Warp Tour in the late 90's early 00's, and they always kept it real. One of the few bands that could get huge, but still remain true to their roots. I also really respect how they have always made music how they wanted to (like Life Won't Wait- lot of disses they got for it). Rancid is the main reason that I got into punk when I was a kid, and I know I'm not the only one!

I grew up in Poland on mostly UK and Polish punk - classics, and then streetpunk/oi, going a bit into ska.
The US scene was something that I'd see as "historical" with the amazing legacy of Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, or Black Flag, but I thought it was kind of dead and that anything newer was commercial and "not-real-punk" (yes, I had a silly teenager elitist attitude...).
Then at one ska show, I heard a band of friends cover "Time Bomb" and started digging into Rancid and it was.... just wow. "Out Come The Wolves" became my favorite album for the next few years. There were days I had it literally on repeat (along with Operation Ivy).
Their streetpunk attitude and ska elements were something really fresh and what I had never heard before from a US band, combined with excellent musicianship, songwriting, modern production, and skills of all the members.
Fun fact - despite all that, their mohawks and studded jackets were something that I'd consider a bit... poseur?
In Poland, only "kinder punks" (14yo kids who just got into punk and wanted to immediately show their "radical" yet not-so-original style to the world) would try to wear "punk uniform"; all the "old guard" old punks I looked into would mostly dress like bums - maybe boots, but otherwise just plain black, worn clothing.
Later I learned that such extreme dress-up is a part of US or Japanese punk culture and not a poseur thing, just a cultural aspect. (And btw now, 20y later I live in NYC!)
Fun fact 2 - my first girlfriend (16yo at that time, I was 17 :) ) was obsessed with Tim Armstrong, and while she loved the music of Distillers (which never resonated with me), she was constantly crying about how Brody "destroyed" and "exploited" poor Tim. 😅

may i suggest a video about wipers and greg sage? yes, he might not be cliché punk, but he is iconic, because how strongly that guy stood against the mainstream and major labels. so much so, it basically killed his career more than one times.

I got exposed yo them by accident lol. I was taking one of my friends home with my car, and he played salvation on the radio. That was it lol, I have been in love with the band ever since. I've been considering getting a tattoo of the band.

Good video, perfect for revisiting their discography before seeing Rancid next month at Graspop metal meeting!
One thing though: for a Euro dude like me it feels like really strange to consider the 90's as the "golden age of punk", or Rancid as a band that broke new ground.
As much as I love Rancid, they simply built on what the Clash did in their first 3 albums, during the real (IMO) golden age of punk....

Fuck i love this band. I really hate debates kn what "real punk" is, but i guess for a lot of kids in the early 2000's "real punk" was Rancid.
I remember catching a show when i was 19 in the late 2000s and having an asthma attack in the pit, then being helped out by the friendliest 30-40 year old punk rockers ive ever met. I cant seperate Rancid from Memo, this short guy with a balding mohawk going out of his way to find my girlfriend and tell her i wasnt doing so well, then sticking around to cheer me up when i clearly looked embarrassed. Thanks Memo! Sorry i made you miss Radio and Radio Havana. This was (i think) at The Echo in Los Angeles.
That really solidified my image of the crowd and scene they surrounded themselves with, even after i stopped keeping up with them as much.

I jumped on the bandwagon when Rancid 2000 came out, then sorta went backwards and liked their more pop and Ska stuff. Even if it's less accessible to casual listeners, it's still got some of the best sing-along songs IMHO. I mean, Radio Havana is fucking awesome.

Rancid was unique and talented, definitely right place at the right time. If it wasn’t for Lars and his Mohawk and rancid would have stayed a 3 piece, they wouldn’t have been nearly as successful, imo.

Awesome video! Rancid are one of my top 5 favorite punk bands along side Green Day (my favorite band), Rise Against (my second favorite band), Paramore, and Fall Out Boy. Though I had heard some of their songs on the radio I only got into listening to Rancid when I decided to start getting into the history of music in my home area of East Bay California during the Pandemic. My favorite album by them is ...And Out Come The Wolves but Rancid (2000) is a close second. I'm super excited for their new album in June.
