This looked like a good race. Shame that it was not available in North America. These highlights were disappointing as they followed only the top three and did not manage to tell the story of the race and what happened with other racers. This coupled with 0 women's coverage I will assume that the UCI will do a better job with this disciplin next year.
I can understand maybe 4th position can't be interesting in other sports or with other racers but that time was Valverde a legend of the cycling maybe the most important figure in that century i believe at least to be fair show when he arrives.
What bothers me the most is: The UCI has taken over ALL bike racing. Road, BMX, Cyclo-Cross, MTB, Downhill, Gravel, etc. Next, they'll try taking over anything with wheels: skateboarding, scooters, e-bikes. 🤨 I always thought mountain biking had its own culture. Especially downhill. But the UCI is ruining that, too!
Absolutely disgraceful that the UCI has the absolute audacity to even publish these horrible highlights and not mention that they abandoned any coverage of the women's race. What do you clowns even do?
I guess we need to sit down and define what a gravel course is supposed to be, at least the UCI needs to come up with a definition. Waay too narrow, especially for the start. Disappointed for WVA, but Keegan represented well and no shame in getting outsprinted by Valverde.
Some of the POV footage online shows what a hard race this was. What a shame we got 40-50k covered for men and nothing for women. Come on UCI….sort it out for 2024.
When is the WC for, Bike Path Cycling? And, what then for, Footpaths, Cement, Sand? Bitumen should have it's own category. And ITT & TTT for each category too.
Literally half the clips shown were on pavement. Actual gravel events are usually 80-90% gravel. Some riders are still using road bikes with 32’s. I’m not against the UCI having a gravel world’s, I just think it should reflect what actual gravel racers are doing. This is still basically a road event with some technical bits here and there.
I don’t get it….. in some countries age groups are rising around 175km to qualify yet the actual too elite race is 169km, something is wrong with this picture UCI? What are defining factors to label it a gravel event ans the best in the world? Also how did the road guys qualify? It’s a small improvement but far from the real deal… just look at how many real gravel riders didn’t bother! Now that speaks volumes… should I start naming riders? Because that list is as long as my arm. This highlight package was hacked together and several key parts were not included. Also what happened to no coverage of the woman’s race?
Hey UCI for future reference, there should be the same amount of this 2:10 as this 0:50 the rest should look like this 3:05. And it would be at least 50% longer. In other words the Euro pro courses should be as hard as the American amateur courses
Europe isn't filled with vast area's of nothing but long straight gravel roads like America is. I don't see an issue with "euro" gravel being a different thing than "American" gravel
@@Inovskis I dunno about that. Wout van Aert had mechanicals. Hard to say that anyone on the podium is stronger than he is. @@Inovskis that's not really how cycling works, generally the riders that are suited best for the course and make the least errors in positioning, bike handling and energy expenditure win.
It’s a difficult call…do you weight it to off road technical or road- it’s a sport at its birth and it’s easy to make a course too easy (road race) or too hard (cyclocross/mtb race). I watched all the race and I thought the course definitely favoured road riders on this occasion.
How does the race favor road riders? Unless it's technical and super bumby, it just favors those with better endurance and power. The winner crashed on a corner cause he took the corner as if it was asphalt and not dirt. That is what a road racer would do. One difference between gravel and road is rolling resistance. On road you can draft off of other riders easier and soft pedal to save energy. On gravel, the dirt makes coasting and drafting less reliable.
Cyclocross requires dismounts or bunny hops over manmade obstacles. Gravel is technically racing on dirt roads with layers of gravel in top. Gravel roads are designed for cars, so they shouldn't be narrow single track. If there are not continuous gravel roads to make a coursr, the course wouod have to incorporate paved sections. Since everyone rides the same roads and it's not technical, it realky just favors riders with better strength, endurance, and fueling.
It's hard to see how this discipline will assert its own identity. We have road racing for tactical, group-based racing; mountain bike racing for rough, technically challenging off-road racing; and cyclo-cross for faster-paced racing on moderately difficult off-road terrain: so what is gravel racing supposed to be?
While the route has improved a bit, the coverage and the quality of the highlights are atrocious. Reminds me of the coverage of MTB marathon. Do better UCI.
I'm confused: I thought Mathieu is already the world champion road cycling for this year... Oh wait, it's gravel but with a lot of asphalt.... right!
