The KTM is probaly a great bike, but I can ride for at least 2 years on the MT for free... in comparison. Also, made in China, while being 3k more expensive...
Agreed.....I been jonesing for the MT09 for years, just get stuck in analysis paralysis mode with the 890, now glad I did. I think the 2024 MT09 is clearly a much better MT09. You didn't mention the turning radius changes for the MT09? Which was always a beef with the prior MT09s. Does that compare with the Duke's? Also, the new Duke's exhaust can be replaced with a slip on exhaust can - have to switch out to a complete whole exhaust system on the MT09. Neither one of those issues are deal breakers tho for me and the new MT09. My only problem now is age - my age (in my mid 70's) Do I still want to ride a performance oriented bike (last bike was a ZX10R - 2006, sold in 2014 and yes, took a moto class last year to make sure I still could even ride, lol))or just buy and easy going cruiser....nah....only live once, yeah? Just don't ever have to "get off" the bike, that might be curtains for a guy my age
I agree with your sentiments! I have been riding now for over 50 years I'm now in my early 70s and still love riding performance bikes I love the Yamaha's MT09/ XSR series for their light weight and good power to weight ratio. Ride on !

@@bosk1n Never too old my friend ! You just have to remember that as you age your reaction times get a bit slower and you don't bounce as well compared to when you were younger 😂 As long as you still enjoy the freedom of riding age isn't a barrier😄 Stay safe 👍
I refuse to support KTM because if it can be enabled with a keystroke, it can be disabled as well. At least with paying for optionals like a quick shifter outright you can't have it removed later on. I'm not saying that's going to happen now, but this is one slippery step away from a feature leasing program like what BMW tried to do with their heated seats and mood lighting
The 2024 is still upright but with the additional constraint of that seat restricting movement rearward. The 2021-2023 MT-09 allowed the rider to move further up the seat to elongate and stretch out over the tank to get more horizontal and closer to the bike. Make some slight modification to the seat of the 2021-2023 MT-09 and get a seamless long seat ideal for greater movement on the bike. Not possible with the 2024 bike. For anyone serious about riding position the 2021-2023 bike can be modified with a Woodcraft clip on with shorter risers, and rear sets that raise the pegs up and to the back towards the rear wheel. If you look at a sport bike like the CBR1000RR you can see that the rear sets are only a couple inches in front of the rear wheel and the back of the seat is almost above the rear axle. It is possible to replicate this rider triangle on the 2021-2023 bike and not on the 2024.
Yamaha for me hands down. Biggest issue in town for me though is the turning angle. It was a while since I tried it but it stays very vivid in my memory as it can be downright bike dropper. It locks way too soon when you expect much more wiggle room. Newer ones apparently better but do try before you buy.
@MOTOBOB In Canada the MT09 SP and 990 Duke with the tech pack is the same price. Only a few hundred difference. What would you recommend if that was the case?
Just got back from a trip to Wales on my Tracer 9, and out of all the bikes that went it was the 1000 mile old Super Adventure R that went onto limp mode and had to be rescued. My 790 Adventure that I had for 3 years had various problems even from new……….the most alarming being the constant problems with the brakes 😮
For me absolutely the MT09 because of reliability and yes I owned a KTM once , nothing wrong with it but the reliability of Japanese products are legendary
Yeah but hang on MotoBob when you open the garage or just generally looking at your own bike you want that feeling of yes she looks good not that is soo ugly but once im sitting on it that doesn't matter it does matter!!! And its the MT for me all the way!!👍🏻 Great comparison video tho MotoBob!!👌🏻👍🏻

IMO: MT-09 SP would be my choice between these too. I am a big time Öhlins fan, so SP version of Yamaha basically would result in a top spec component bike at cheaper price.
The MT09 will be far more reliable. 790's and 890's suffered from oil leaks and corrosion issues. The styling thing is subjective and was daft to include it really.

All in all, it's definitely true. At the same time, there are countries where KTM received all the technology at no extra cost. In addition, in those countries, KTM has a 4-year warranty, which is very significant.
KTM now has a promo till end of AUgust where the tech pack is installed FREE, beyond the first 1500Ks. Does that tip the decision in favour of KTM any better?
KTM builds bikes that are exciting and fun to ride, but they struggle with electrical issues, and now with cam failures in the LC8c engine, my confidence in KTM's ability to effectively resolve these problems has diminished. On the other hand, Yamaha, with its CP3 engine, excels in both longevity and quality.

I got my Duke 990 a couple of weeks ago and just yesterday the demo mode expired, the damn thing won't even quick shift up! How can they shit on their clients in such a way?!
Ordered the MT-09 SP after riding the standard model MT.
Had a '21 Hayabusa before and as a daily / only bike it was way too "much".
I will still miss the Suzi, but I bought the MT after 5 miles of riding it.
Fun, fun, fun, without being in jail for using 2nd gear through the rev range.
The KTM is probaly a great bike, but I can ride for at least 2 years on the MT for free... in comparison.
Also, made in China, while being 3k more expensive...
Manufacturers treating the bike like a video game with a paywall!? That’s a hard FU!
Great video mate! But also include cost of maintenance etc. Also is it reliable & dependable??
Thanks
Ride on !
77 years old with a 2014 FZ-09 for 10 years. The rush of mid-range torque and easy handling keeps me coming back for more. Had the ECU flashed and sorted the suspension.
@@Gmac237 Oh damn guys, you inspire me. After my small crash - the thought has crossed my mind - "maybe I am a bit too old to ride in my early 50s." After your comments - I am sticking to my bike until my early 80s now for sure.
Maybe a bit less wheelies though. :D
@@bosk1n Never too old my friend ! You just have to remember that as you age your reaction times get a bit slower and you don't bounce as well compared to when you were younger 😂 As long as you still enjoy the freedom of riding age isn't a barrier😄 Stay safe 👍
Will the US get the half fairing for the XSR 900?
I choose the Z900RS but it doesn’t have cruise control.
Should have gone for the XSR900
The Z900RS looks good but is very heavy compared to MT09 and the KTM !
No mention of quality and reliability
That's obvious, no need of extra mention .
@@nikos-giorgos Seriously, is Yamaha that unreliable?
@@MarkAldridge-cs9rt
Never said that.
They just no need to mention any of that.
One is reliable and one not so much, we all know which is which.
I ve got a new MT09 /before I had a Street Triple 2013). LOVE my MT! I didnt try the new KTM my friend did who also has a ( 2022 )MT and he didnt like it. He said the Yamaha has better brakes and engine, cheaper and just a better bike in everything.
IMO: MT-09 SP would be my choice between these too.
I am a big time Öhlins fan, so SP version of Yamaha basically would result in a top spec component bike at cheaper price.
MT-10 and 990 would be a more fair compair?
I went with the MT09. Just seemed like better value, all the features I want and more, and the hooligan factor can't be beat.
Where I live, for the price of a 990 with a tech pack, you can get a brand new MT10. And the MT09 is 4k cheaper lol
How do these two compare to the Indian FTR?
The MT09 will be far more reliable. 790's and 890's suffered from oil leaks and corrosion issues. The styling thing is subjective and was daft to include it really.
Yamaha all day i had one for passed 3 years sp model and it was amazing bike i am currently selling my MT09Sp 2021 mind and did only compair it to the 890 i test rode
Street Triple 765 RS FTW.
Could make a video about the Aprilia Rs457 video please
I wanna hear your thoughts on the bike
All in all, it's definitely true. At the same time, there are countries where KTM received all the technology at no extra cost. In addition, in those countries, KTM has a 4-year warranty, which is very significant.
Which countries?
KTM needs a 4-year warranty for sales. If a Yamaha doesn't break the first year, it's not going to.
This comparison makes them seem awfully close. Maybe the best bike is simply the one you prefer?
They are not "close" except maybe on paper. Drove both back to back and they are completely different characters. I preferred 990. Buy the one that makes you smile.
Yamaha because i'm biased towards Japanese bikes, Euro bikes are more or less designed for people who want to boost their ego impo, also hope that speedo angels release a tempered glass 2024 MT09 protector soon, love their products and always put them on my bikes
Exactly, I haven't been able to find a screen protector for the new 09, even from Yamaha.
@@otlndsh none are out yet that I'm aware of, but I'd rather wait because I trust Speedo Angels over any other brand
what about reliability?
What about reliability & dealer network? Here in Denmark there is only 2 who sells KTM...
Better avoid them both
@@nikos-giorgos I will 😄
Hvis du bor tæt på grænsen ligger der en finfin dealer lige over grænsen til Tyskland. Ellers Jens W i Roskilde (super god!) eller drengene i Horsens. Pålideligheden læser man meget om her på yt og nettet. Mange klager over olielækage.
I’m a KTM 790 owner so it would have to be the Yamaha for me based on reliability and customer satisfaction alone. KTM are constantly leaking and now with the camshaft failures at the 3rd service and KTM charging you £2.5k to replace it after a 3 month wait I would go near a KTM again.
MT09-SP deposit paid and awaiting delivery
Congrats!! same. Super excited.
I got a 23 mt-10 instead. It rocks
Bob bumped his head.!
Yamaha 💯💪🔥😎
KTM becoming more and more big headed
Ktm all day orange day!
Both Naked Machine are good I simply loved both the naked bikes
definitely the Mt with the cp3 engine over the ktm ...just can't beat that sound 😮& power delivery
I have heard many people praise the Triumph Street Triple RS.
I would say no to the ktm for the extra cost to unlock the features that should be included. They are 1 step away from charging you by the KM for the stuff. Could you imagine? you going down the highway and boom, your cruise control expires. On the track in the corner? boom, race mode expired, 20% reduction in HP....
I’m buying the MT09 SP. it’s still cheaper than the KTM and I’m sure handles better. Plus I disagree that the KTM looks better! Unfortunately there isn’t a category for reliability which Yamaha wins hands down!
If you buy a new KTM 890, 990 etc, assuming it continues to work and the KTM dealer supports you through all the gremlins… you lose a lot on resale because everyone is suspicious of the thing dying on them and needing an overly expensive repair. After my experience with an 890 duke R, I won’t be putting another pumpkin in my garage. First bike in 40years that I’ve had any significant problems with.
Have to look at the MP 9.
Both Bikes are perfect
My Choice MT09 SP
Much more reliable Bike
Reliability - you forgot this criteria !
I just need both of those compared to StreetTripleRS! xD
Ktm is more expensive but what ill depreciation be like between the two?
Mt09sp ! If you woule have tested the sp version and the ktm with the 1k pack, all the points would have go to the mt. Tec, looks value for money etc...
The 990 and the 1390 are really tempting me away from my Street Triple RS, although there's always that worry about reliability with KTMs.
Keep your RS 💯💪🔥
KTM with probable issues with cams would not be my choice.
I dont see a link to a tft screen protector for the MT09 2024
Tag me or send me the link when you find one please
Yamaha MT09 baby!
The MT line is just not nice to look at. The frame, the exhaust, even the engine. I want to like them because their motors are so good, but they lack soul compared to the KTMs. Having said that, the Yamaha is no doubt a better value.
i ve bought a 890 duke r, love it, but the company does not show any respect to their customers with their unethical policies.
I suggest before anyone makes a decision ride them both take into account what you need/want, read some info on forums on the previous models, talk to owners etc.
on paper however between the 2 and as presented here, Yamaha nailed it - ktm is shooting themselves on the foot, they better wake up fast before they become another case study on how not to manage a company.
KTM have never dealt with their reliability issues plus I've heard from owners struggles of getting their broken KTM fixed so Yamaha for me given the choice
