The Australian car laws around mofication are so depressing. In South Australia organised car meets have been destroyed by police intervention. People stopped showing up after yellow stickers kept getting handed out. The most frustrating thing is having your legal car defected because the officer thought it was illegal. Another frustrating thing is the sheer cost to have modifications 'engineered'. Mods are expensive as they are, but you don't often get much change out of $5k to have a state approved engineer sign off to get a mod plate.

It's more of a case of having to money and doing the paperwork to make sure whatever modifications you have done safe and havent compromised the vehicle. It also helps to not live in nsw or Victoria
Define " Modify " please . There are some Sound Engineering principles involved in the Manufacture of the vehicle , as new . Tampering with this stuff , without involvement of an Engineer to approve for safety reasons , is Stupid . Aesthetic stuff like Wheel/Tyre packages and Paint/Wrap " Bling " is one thing . A 1000 bhp Subaru without Chassis and Braking upgrades to match is something else .
There should be a law that if a race-track is in the area FIRST, that NO ONE building a home in that area has a right to complain about the noise. Should also be a law that cops can only put a “defect notice” on a car “IF” the cop actually knows for a FACT there is illegal modifications, cops put “defect notices” on based on guessing.
I sympathize somewhat, but also read up on the recent history of Wakefield Park. The previous owner apparently failed to keep their promises re: noise abatement for a LONG time, and it got closed. New owner is actually keeping the promises (building artificial hills) and it's looking like it will reopen. Keen to go there again
Australia like the rest of the world is almost dependant on cars. Trying to go anywhere in rural areas or major suburbs is almost near impossible without a car. And in spite of the lack of walkable suburbs and shocking public transport system the government still punishes us all for using the only reliable means of getting from point a to b, regardless if it’s a regular person who uses it as a means to an end or a car person who enjoys motors and playing with their pride and joy.

I am from Hong Kong and moved to Melbourne few years ago. Yes that P plate bullshit sucks, yes sometimes cops are annoying But the car scene is way better than lots of countries. We got like 6 race tracks alone in VIC, countless beautiful and fun mountain roads, somewhat reasonable laws for modifying your car etc. Instead of "I only have half a cup of water left", try "I still have half a cup of water" P.s. it's not just the big races like F1 that's fun to watch, we got Improved Production and Excel Cup which are as intense as F1s

Almost 10 years ago, there were plans to make a drag strip where i live in SA next to the Speedway, but never came close to happening unfortunatly because of noise even though it is nowhere near town..
The US is the best place in the world when it comes to being a car enthusiast, where you can do some of the craziest mods with extensive tuners, parts etc. If you've got the money, anything is possible there.
Yep 100% correct the USA is where its at, a car guys Paradise. Everything is Heaps cheaper, massive range and availability of cool cars and parts, road laws are way better and so many specialist workshops to choose from. Really does highlight how unique and special Australia's car scene really is, the incredible cars our scene has turned out esp when you consider how hard those in power make for us. The incredibly limited options tyrannical road laws overly severe punishments and highly restrictive costs involved,with so many negatives involved kinda makes you wonder why anyone with an ounce of common sense would choose to be a car enthusiast here aye 🤔
don't some states have modified exhausts completely illegal? and i have heard stories of people getting tiketed for too dark tint, tire poke and similar stuff to what people get 'defected' here for
The worst part about being a car guy in aus is spending all the money modifying your car plus adding extra after like bigger brakes but yet the roads are full of pot holes and are built poorly and we are the ones to get in trouble
The older I get the more I actually agree with the laws. I get it's tough to find a track, however we only have ourselves to blame, we take things too far, make a mess and not clean up after ourselves meaning event organisers/owners of facilities no longer offer events. Hoon laws are in place again because people take things too far and people get injured or killed, only takes a tire blowing and a chunk smacks some young spectator in the wrong place and they die. That's without mentioning the mess that's left, discarded wheels, chunks of blown tires, bumpers, lights, beer bottles ect. You get the idea. People are killed all the time from reckless and dangerous operation of vehicles. As for modifying vehicles, the law may be a little tighter than even id like as a boring almost 30 year old man however engineers certifications are a way to modify your vehicle beyond the limitations of the law, stops people putting timber blocks in to lift suspension or cutting springs to lower them thus changing the suspension geometry and as a result making them less drivable or controllable on the road. I do sympathise and agree that there should be more facilities and a little more freedom but at the end of the day, we have ourselves as a car community to blame for abusing the freedoms we did have too often and too long.

As a car guy machanic I follow these rules to the t everything is within millimetres to speck and they can't fine me or do anything cause everything is engineered or legal 😂 one tried to get me for clearance (everything was legal) stickerd me I raised it 20mm to be able to drive it then contested it in court and got my money back for the fine, lawyer paid for and an extra 2k 😂
Any representation would be great, issues like luxury car tax being a blatant rort and impacting many regular Australians as well as enthusiasts would stand a chance of gaining traction if a capable group decided to organise. Hoon laws would be much harder to attack but making noise about it is better than nothing. Voting unfortunately wont change anything, being anti-cool cars is just a feature of our government as far as I know. One could rant for a long time on the general approach to road safety and motor vehicles in Australia its terrible.
Once I saw a post on reddit about someone getting a defect on their stock holden for being to loud while driving through the city in Adelaide. The government here seems to hate all the car guys
It's really annoying that in Victoria even when you are 18 and get your red P plates you can only take one passenger, then it's not until you are 22 that you have your full licence. Meanwhile you can take however many people you want and get your full licence at 19 in Western Australia
Just to story here - I'm 18, a car enthusiast, I've only had my license for (excluding 2 years of L plates AND driving for my job before I had my license as an apprentice mechanic) 6 months and here's what my story looks like with cars: got a speeding fine for 10 over in a 50 zone with NO SIGNS saying it was a 50, yet the sign before that said 60. I tried to dispute it, no luck. -2 demerit points. 1 speeding fine where I was 8 over, no excuse here but yet again, another -1 point. THEN (Now yes, this was slightly stupid) 3am, Monash freeway (4 lanes) not a SINGLE car on the road. I did one pull in my car and got up to 148kmh (speed limit was 100kmh), and a cop camping under the bridge comes out, pulls me over, and takes my license for 12 months, and gives me a $980 fine. THEN HE PROCEEDS TO HAVE THE GAUL TO TELL ME HE DID THE NICE THING BY NOT TAKING MY CAR ON THE SPOT. It's a joke. Now yes, once again, the last case was due to my own stupidity, but it's like old mate in the video said - would I do that for 10-15 seconds tops, or pay $700-800 and at least a day to go to my nearest track? Oh and also road worthies are a joke. Fk VicRoads.
Mate, I was doing 127km on a 100km in a empty country side road, I somehow didn’t see the mobile speed camera, and this was 2 months ago, I paid the fine. And 3 days ago I got a letter saying because of that my license has been suspended for 6 months, starting from September to March 2025. Like wtf? I’m on my greens as well. Life is just fucking great, also from vic
10km/h over is 3 points, yes, but if you get caught twice doing 10 over, you only lose 6 points, not your licence. To lose your licence from points, you have to lose 6 or more in one go, or accumulate 12, or 13 points (depending on licence) in 3 years. Also, your pricing is pretty accurate for track days, but to race at Sydney Dragway at a Wed night street meet, it's $70 to race, or $60 (I think) to enter the burnouts at the end of the night. Most states have off street racing events on a fairly regular basis, and even at some of the regional tracks do too. Both drag racing, and burnouts entry fees are cheaper than a small fine, and you can enter a 2-3 day national event for around the price of a cheaper track day, or a lower mid range fine, so being cost prohibitive is a cop out in the majority of cases. If you live in Australia, and can afford a car, you can afford to legally race it occasionally, unless you live in Tassie, Victoria, or essentially outback Australia, where there's no tracks. As for car, and bike legality, I have an E500 (5L V8) Mercedes that is straight piped, and a big cube (109 CUI-1800cc) V-Twin cruiser that is also straight piped, but I've never had an issue with police with either of them. As long as you're not being a dick, and aren't a P plater, it's rare to have issues, and that includes driving home from the track with the race number still on the car.
Just don't go to Philip Island or Sandown raceway with a straight pipe. However from my understanding the cost of a track day does vary, like I run with the MSCA of South Australia it's typical around $170 too $200 from memory. Besides from that you just gotta keep road cars with in reason, just read the ADR and figure out if something you want to do needs to be engineered.

However in this example he was specifically talking about probation drivers, who only have 5 points. 7:26 He's correct, because that's exactly how I got suspended. No fines for 5yrs, in my 6th & final year got done twice for doing 10 over in a 40 zone (changed traffic conditions due to construction near my house) & boom, gone. Almost 6yrs without a fine, two genuine mistakes within 12 months & they treat you like a criminal. Victoria is a fkn police state, I moved to WA immediately after.
Not sure how it is in Vic but in Queensland but even getting a motorcycle license is insanely difficult. 1. have had your P plates for a year (2 year process at least) 2. complete a online course 3. pass a knowledge test 4. now you have your L plates for a motorcycle 5. have your L plates for at least 90 days 6. pass another test 7. complete a riding course or pass a riding test 8. now you have your P plates for a motorcycle (not allowed to ride anything that has a power to weight ratio of 150kw per ton or mod your bike) 9. gotta have your motorcycle p plates for at least 2 years 10. complete another riding course or another riding test 11. now you have your open license (can ride any road legal bike or mod your own bike)

Youve got it good... Compare Australia to the UK, in the UK, the cost of insurance for anyone under 25 is insane, and its mandatory. Then you need to pay your annual road tax, if you've got an interesting car, thats over £700 (or about $1500 AUD). Then you pay about £1.50 ($3 AUD) per L for petrol, more than half of which is tax. Then we have congestion zones and low emission zones in some cities, which you have to pay money to the government for. Then weve got more speed cameras than you can shake a stick at. In terms of the availability of cars, we drive on the same side of the road as you, which is the opposite to the rest of Europe, so importing isnt exactly convenient. Ohh, also, every winter, the government dumps millions of tonnes of salt on the roads, so every single car is rusted to scrap by the time its about 20 years old. On the 4WDing side of things, there isnt a single offroad track in the UK that a reasonably health person couldnt walk both ways in a single day, and none of them are actually so difficult that you couldnt drive them in a bog standard SUV. Now, you might point out that we've got more freedom to modify our cars, and from a legal standpoint, we do. Not by much, we still cant have decats or have tyres pocking outside the arches, but other than that, anything goes, so long as it passes an MoT. But of course, theres a downside - you have to tell your insurance company about your mods, and that makes the insurance even more expensive, and if you dont tell them, then thats illegal, and youll get a fine, points, etc etc. Australia is probably the best country in the world to live if you are a 4WD enthusiast, and its probably amongst the best for sports car enthusiasts too.
Being someone who's been in the modified car and bike scene for decades, it's not as bad as it used to be as far as police presence goes. They need 2 officers per car or 2 motorcycle police nowadays which diminishes their presence. They could double their presence but Victoria is a nanny state run by cowards. The laws nowadays are draconian though, but be smart and avoid areas where there's a lot of hooning or where most residents drive AU Falcons and Commodores (shout outs Yorak Hunt). You'll find cops pick on people who are pushing it, just be smarter than they are it's not that hard.
I live in Sydney. I travel to Albury every year for Chryslers on the Murray. On Friday and Saturday nights there's a road near the border that people cruise up and down, with bystanders on the side of the road, in a park or the footpath watching on. There are families there, and it's fun. The councils on both sides of the border, along with the police want to ban this unsanctioned event. This in turn well hurt the the car show that has absolutely nothing to do with the weekend cruise. For the first time in 20 odd years I'm seriously considering not attending. That cruise was why I would go and catch up with mates, now they want to kill it. All these governments pushing EV's on the public want to do is to ban cars altogether, and bring forth 15 minute cities. Unfortunately, as you've pointed out in this video, the good old days are but a distance memory.
S.A is a lovely place to mod cars my dad owned a Toyota Supra that made over 800hp and he drove it as a daily for years and never got a fine or any problems from the police.
650 hp falcon ute, it's low and loud and never been pulled over. It's driven to the courts and police station weekly as per my work and never raises an eyebrow. One of the local cops has a hotted up Subaru coupe, another has a mint XR8.
Mate I’m an Aussie and my daily driver is a 1965 Chrysler Valiant AP6 made in Adelaide years before I was born. I was lucky enough to buy one off an old lady in the 90’s when I was a teenager for just $500. I had it for 14 years until some scumbag stole it. I sold my Harley in 2020 and bought my dream car another AP6 this time a Regal and it’s on classic plates which costs me just $50 a year to register. You have a log book and you are supposed to only drive it 60 times a year. Well I fill it out and drive my car all the time. Police don’t bother me they actually love it. I’m in the Albury, Griffith and Wagga area. You need to look into old Aussie cars they are available I bought mine in 2020 for $13,500 put $5000 on it to get it road worthy and it’s now insured for $40,000 a bit over what it’s worth but it’s pretty much irreplaceable. I will not do burnouts as I won’t put my car in danger. Seen too many car engines blow up. The way they treat P platers now is wrong my kids are getting old enough to drive soon and two years on your P’s and these logs that kids without two parents have trouble finding the time. I got my L’s learnt to drive went for my P’s and was on them for a year. That’s how it once was. Why it’s so stupid now is sad. One cool thing is I bought a BMW from 2005 that cost $70,000 new for just $7500 I’m getting it ready for my daughter it’s red and has sweet mags. Very safe and like a new car I’m just trying to fix a stupid oil leak that happens when the motor heats up.
Even the options for modified car insurance are very small. Shows the stigma still attached to modded vehicles. Just goes to show that Australia is also anti mod, even though upgraded brakes makes the car stop better than the stock crap.
We did make more than just Holden or Ford cars in Oz. There was of course Chrysler/Mitsubishi and Toyota, Leyland etc. Going further back, there was a local assembly company called AMI that assembled Knock Down cars from around the world. I am not in the market for an expensive car (and never will), but I agree that still keeping the LCT is stupid, or should at least be increased. And yes certain mods should be legal without expensive engineering.
luxury car tax came into existence in 2000 coinciding with the GST, and had nothing to do with toyota. it replaced the wholesale sales tax, which was simply a revenue raiser.
Yes the 70s 80 and 90s where the best for car guys when i was on my first P platesat 18 i drove a xy panelvan that had a 351 out of a cobra in it and on nitrous oxide and a top loader 4 speed i survived i didnt crash
As a person who used to attend QR, the costs are now prohibitivly expensive and I havent been able to enioy my hobby for 2 years now. In Australia, you work, pay bills and drink. Anything else is illegal...for your safety.
Now try being a car guy in say Europe where simply learning how to drive costs upwards of $3000-$4000 and takes years to complete. Compare that to Australia where the total cost of a license is about $150 (Ls test Ps test combined). In Victoria 40KPH zones including school zones are extremely strict where you will get 3-5 demerit points and a massive $400-$500 fine for speeding just 1KPH over the limit. If you’re caught speeding more than 5KPH over the limit in a 40KPH speed limit or slower then you will instantly loose your license/have your license suspended for 3 months or longer depending on how many other road offences you have under your license.
Can attest, received a defect back in 2008 for an oil leak in the engine bay of my 87 Mazda MX-6 at 1am in the morning in WA. No leak, just an older car with a bit of dirt in the engine bay, always remember to clean and polish your engines before going out, while you are out and before you return from a night on the town when driving in Aus ^_^
the expensive cars they impound don't get crushed, they auction them off, Queensland did an impound auction about a year back and most of the cars were not even worth that much but were just in good nick, most of the cars that get crushed are skid cars and just complete shitboxes. most of the defects I hear about are from shitboxes and p platers that cut corners on modifying the car such as not getting an enginneer to sign it off (proving that the mod is done properly) due to being on a tight budget and dont accept that they cannot afford do it properly, other ones include obvious illegal modifications including excessive camber and lowering the car alot, if you look it up it does say you cannot have anything on the bottom of the car lower than 100mm(10cm) from the ground, so if you do that, you have to kinda expect that, that law seems to be the same everywhere. You can have a modified exhaust as long as its not too loud which is in most places anyway, some states in America have modified exausts illegal across the board i have heard. People I know with modified cars have barely been bothered by the cops, they only got pulled over for speeding once. what really ruins the car scene here is the hoon gangs, ie mexican hoon cartel. they give all car enthusiasts in Australia a bad name, they do burnouts in the most inappropriate locations including suburban streets and the middle of intersections in the middle of the day and busy higways. When they do it in suburban streets, not surprising, someone calls the cops and then the hoons attack the house of that person who called police and burnout on the drievway. They also have gatherings in large numbers, launch fireworks and post eveything on social media bringing lots of attention to themselves and when police show up they literally attack them. And car enthusiasts are all assumed to be associated with these guys which that's far from the case and you wonder why 'governments hate car enthusiests'
Here is my perspective on the whole industrial area thing you say it's for a one off 10 second burnout but it's not i ran a small business in a quiet industrial area for many years and it was a hot spot for the local car community aka . We had our security cameras smashed on multiple occasions by the lovely " car community " members we had rubbish from takeaway food left all over our driveways and gardens from the same gronks about 4 or 5 times a week . People pissing and shitting in the bushes and big puddles of puke from over indulgence we had our fire hose reels used hundreds of times to wet down the road then just left for us to clean up . Having our entire driveway and car park full of tyre marks and having to explain to customers that it wasn't from us cost us in lost sales and the best bit was if we where working when these gronks rocked up we would be threatened if we called the cops or reported them .
This is why I'm not gonna bother building or owning a nice street car. Daily shitter, race car for track days, and a 1000 without a plate and a dark tint helmet for fun with the cops :) On a real note tho, crazy how you can be pulled on the spot for owning a nice car and get a magical defect notice. Super shit laws.
Those laws are insane 15.5mph and no license is insane, i always assumed in the outback that you could speed loads and god this makes the uk look amazing and i thought a ban for 100mph was extreme
I'm thinking of moving to Aus and I'm trying to figure out if your car scene is worse than the UK. For the issues you mentioned we don't have it nearly as bad, but our nation's class system keeps us all broke af compared to you guys, and they really shaft young drivers on insurance, making the car scene all but dead. Having any car at all is a major flex atp in this country. Your average UK car meet will be full of 'stage 1' remapped Fiestas with eyelids and 'locally hated' stickers and not much else. The roads are also dreadful (tons of potholes and extremely narrow, designed for horses and unchanged since) On the plus side, in smaller towns and rural areas you can basically drive however you want at night without interference from the police as they simply don't have the budget. If you can break into the track scene, that seems to be thriving, just mostly inacessible because of our stagnating wages. I was disappointed to hear that the australian track scene is dead, as I was planning on migrating to do FIFO mine work and enter track days and time attacks during my time off.
I think I’m a little bit luckier in WA. You can drive whatever on your Ls and Ps and I think you get all 12 points as well. The car scene is also good. Great variety. I have very rarely seen modified cars pulled over, and I don’t know if canaries are issued often because I’ve never seen one on a car before.
If you dont restrict the bureaucracy, they will not stop until you all have bicycles. I am now in the USA (South Carolina) where you can make a dirt bike street legal fairly easily. Also, there is no car inspections. It varies from State to State. Some states just banned JDM kei cars... The state of Georgia is at war with small JDM truck owners...

Meh. As a car nerd in Australia since early highschool years (I'm late gen-X era, for reference) and biker for the last ~17 years I find it difficult to sympathize with most of your complaints. All those behaviours are completely optional. You simply don't have to do them. At all. If you don't, you get cheaper insurance as a bonus, and of course further savings from not getting fines, fixing defects, etc. Expect this trend to intensify, by the way, with modern cars all phoning home to manufacturers with information about how you use the vehicle, which in turn gets sold to data brokers who then sell it on to insurers. Choice Australia and The Guardian have written about this recently. In the car/bike scene there seems to be a common unwillingness to accept personal responsibility for consequences and/or their impact on others, and it makes me wonder how much that is contributing to the outcomes of their interactions with law enforcement. Have they tried being grownups for even a single second? I have personally been a very naughty boi in the past - can't deny the allure or enjoyment of it - but consistently experienced pretty extreme leniency, including having what really should have been a "get in the van" moment in Tasmania downgraded to a very minor fine. Why? I didn't ask and don't know, but I certainly didn't go on unhinged rants about how I have a "right" or "need" to be a total dickhead like I've read so frequently in car/bike forums. Some years ago I heard serious hooning late one night, which very suddenly stopped and didn't resume. By chance the next day I saw the offending car (verified by correlation with a media article that included a photo) on a flatbed. It was so thoroughly mangled that I could only identify it as a Silvia by one partially-surviving taillight. Three people died. That shit needs to end. Are you still surprised that governments are ratcheting up the laws & enforcement of those laws? I do agree that more choice of vehicles would be nice (I'd love a Peugeot 106 GTI!), but the only way that's happening, I think, is if we switch to LHD. I'm a little surprised that we still haven't.
What about the stupid laws on modifications and how hard it is to get a modification plate? Yes, people shouldn't do stuff like burnouts and excessive speeding, but how does lowering a car, nice rims, and a exhaust affect people. It would actually boost revenue for mechanic shops for people who aren't capable of installing these parts because most people are too stupid to install this stuff

I got a defect on my bike because he didn't actually know how fast i was going and couldn't give me a ticket for speeding, just thought I looked like I was going too fast (my mate in a stock WV just ahead was going faster than me. I had to drive straight home and then i could only drive it to a "place of repair" or home. No 30 day timer to get it fixed, and it was my only vehicle. The "major defect" that meant it couldn't possibly be safe enough to be driven on the roads for a week (have to make a booking which usually takes almost a week to get)? Muffler too loud. Sorry bud. I lived through the 70s 80s and 90s of the most awesome and iconic street muscle cars. And a proud former owner of a 72 Holden SS. We would cruise the city streets and hang with the cars the chicks and our loyal mates. Street races on a Sunday were easy. There literly were no other cars on the road. Everyone was home playing cricket or watching football. We never did stupid mods to our cars like young kids do today. And our cars never drank aeroplane fuel like rice burners do today. In fact a fat exhaust was a two and a half inch twin exhaust and a pair of extractors and a 650 holley. We played by the rules we followed the law when it came to mods. Today's hoons do what ever they like and to hell with the neighbour's or anyone else. Today's car lovers aren't like we of the 60's born generation were. Not even close.

The Australian car laws around mofication are so depressing. In South Australia organised car meets have been destroyed by police intervention. People stopped showing up after yellow stickers kept getting handed out. The most frustrating thing is having your legal car defected because the officer thought it was illegal.
Another frustrating thing is the sheer cost to have modifications 'engineered'. Mods are expensive as they are, but you don't often get much change out of $5k to have a state approved engineer sign off to get a mod plate.
I whacked a 650hp turbo barra in my ute in SA, and never been pulled over once.

Modifying your car should be legal in any country that's considered "free", there is no freedom when government can dictate what you can and cannot do
It's more of a case of having to money and doing the paperwork to make sure whatever modifications you have done safe and havent compromised the vehicle. It also helps to not live in nsw or Victoria

Define " Modify " please . There are some Sound Engineering principles involved in the Manufacture of the vehicle , as new .
Tampering with this stuff , without involvement of an Engineer to approve for safety reasons , is Stupid .

A 1000 bhp Subaru without Chassis and Braking upgrades to match is something else .
There should be a law that if a race-track is in the area FIRST, that NO ONE building a home in that area has a right to complain about the noise. Should also be a law that cops can only put a “defect notice” on a car “IF” the cop actually knows for a FACT there is illegal modifications, cops put “defect notices” on based on guessing.
I sympathize somewhat, but also read up on the recent history of Wakefield Park. The previous owner apparently failed to keep their promises re: noise abatement for a LONG time, and it got closed. New owner is actually keeping the promises (building artificial hills) and it's looking like it will reopen. Keen to go there again
Any venue should be covered by this. If you chose to build or buy near any "noisy venue" you have no right to make complaint about said noise.
Australia like the rest of the world is almost dependant on cars. Trying to go anywhere in rural areas or major suburbs is almost near impossible without a car. And in spite of the lack of walkable suburbs and shocking public transport system the government still punishes us all for using the only reliable means of getting from point a to b, regardless if it’s a regular person who uses it as a means to an end or a car person who enjoys motors and playing with their pride and joy.

Almost 10 years ago, there were plans to make a drag strip where i live in SA next to the Speedway, but never came close to happening unfortunatly because of noise even though it is nowhere near town..
The US is the best place in the world when it comes to being a car enthusiast, where you can do some of the craziest mods with extensive tuners, parts etc.

Yep 100% correct the USA is where its at, a car guys Paradise. Everything is Heaps cheaper, massive range and availability of cool cars and parts, road laws are way better and so many specialist workshops to choose from. Really does highlight how unique and special Australia's car scene really is, the incredible cars our scene has turned out esp when you consider how hard those in power make for us. The incredibly limited options tyrannical road laws overly severe punishments and highly restrictive costs involved,with so many negatives involved kinda makes you wonder why anyone with an ounce of common sense would choose to be a car enthusiast here aye 🤔

The older I get the more I actually agree with the laws. I get it's tough to find a track, however we only have ourselves to blame, we take things too far, make a mess and not clean up after ourselves meaning event organisers/owners of facilities no longer offer events. Hoon laws are in place again because people take things too far and people get injured or killed, only takes a tire blowing and a chunk smacks some young spectator in the wrong place and they die. That's without mentioning the mess that's left, discarded wheels, chunks of blown tires, bumpers, lights, beer bottles ect. You get the idea. People are killed all the time from reckless and dangerous operation of vehicles. As for modifying vehicles, the law may be a little tighter than even id like as a boring almost 30 year old man however engineers certifications are a way to modify your vehicle beyond the limitations of the law, stops people putting timber blocks in to lift suspension or cutting springs to lower them thus changing the suspension geometry and as a result making them less drivable or controllable on the road. I do sympathise and agree that there should be more facilities and a little more freedom but at the end of the day, we have ourselves as a car community to blame for abusing the freedoms we did have too often and too long.

As a car guy machanic I follow these rules to the t everything is within millimetres to speck and they can't fine me or do anything cause everything is engineered or legal 😂 one tried to get me for clearance (everything was legal) stickerd me I raised it 20mm to be able to drive it then contested it in court and got my money back for the fine, lawyer paid for and an extra 2k 😂

Any representation would be great, issues like luxury car tax being a blatant rort and impacting many regular Australians as well as enthusiasts would stand a chance of gaining traction if a capable group decided to organise. Hoon laws would be much harder to attack but making noise about it is better than nothing. Voting unfortunately wont change anything, being anti-cool cars is just a feature of our government as far as I know. One could rant for a long time on the general approach to road safety and motor vehicles in Australia its terrible.

It's really annoying that in Victoria even when you are 18 and get your red P plates you can only take one passenger, then it's not until you are 22 that you have your full licence. Meanwhile you can take however many people you want and get your full licence at 19 in Western Australia

Just to story here - I'm 18, a car enthusiast, I've only had my license for (excluding 2 years of L plates AND driving for my job before I had my license as an apprentice mechanic) 6 months and here's what my story looks like with cars: got a speeding fine for 10 over in a 50 zone with NO SIGNS saying it was a 50, yet the sign before that said 60. I tried to dispute it, no luck. -2 demerit points. 1 speeding fine where I was 8 over, no excuse here but yet again, another -1 point. THEN (Now yes, this was slightly stupid) 3am, Monash freeway (4 lanes) not a SINGLE car on the road. I did one pull in my car and got up to 148kmh (speed limit was 100kmh), and a cop camping under the bridge comes out, pulls me over, and takes my license for 12 months, and gives me a $980 fine. THEN HE PROCEEDS TO HAVE THE GAUL TO TELL ME HE DID THE NICE THING BY NOT TAKING MY CAR ON THE SPOT. It's a joke. Now yes, once again, the last case was due to my own stupidity, but it's like old mate in the video said - would I do that for 10-15 seconds tops, or pay $700-800 and at least a day to go to my nearest track? Oh and also road worthies are a joke. Fk VicRoads.
Mate, I was doing 127km on a 100km in a empty country side road, I somehow didn’t see the mobile speed camera, and this was 2 months ago, I paid the fine.
And 3 days ago I got a letter saying because of that my license has been suspended for 6 months, starting from September to March 2025.

10km/h over is 3 points, yes, but if you get caught twice doing 10 over, you only lose 6 points, not your licence. To lose your licence from points, you have to lose 6 or more in one go, or accumulate 12, or 13 points (depending on licence) in 3 years. Also, your pricing is pretty accurate for track days, but to race at Sydney Dragway at a Wed night street meet, it's $70 to race, or $60 (I think) to enter the burnouts at the end of the night. Most states have off street racing events on a fairly regular basis, and even at some of the regional tracks do too. Both drag racing, and burnouts entry fees are cheaper than a small fine, and you can enter a 2-3 day national event for around the price of a cheaper track day, or a lower mid range fine, so being cost prohibitive is a cop out in the majority of cases. If you live in Australia, and can afford a car, you can afford to legally race it occasionally, unless you live in Tassie, Victoria, or essentially outback Australia, where there's no tracks.
As for car, and bike legality, I have an E500 (5L V8) Mercedes that is straight piped, and a big cube (109 CUI-1800cc) V-Twin cruiser that is also straight piped, but I've never had an issue with police with either of them. As long as you're not being a dick, and aren't a P plater, it's rare to have issues, and that includes driving home from the track with the race number still on the car.
Just don't go to Philip Island or Sandown raceway with a straight pipe. However from my understanding the cost of a track day does vary, like I run with the MSCA of South Australia it's typical around $170 too $200 from memory. Besides from that you just gotta keep road cars with in reason, just read the ADR and figure out if something you want to do needs to be engineered.

He's correct, because that's exactly how I got suspended. No fines for 5yrs, in my 6th & final year got done twice for doing 10 over in a 40 zone (changed traffic conditions due to construction near my house) & boom, gone.
Almost 6yrs without a fine, two genuine mistakes within 12 months & they treat you like a criminal.
Victoria is a fkn police state, I moved to WA immediately after.

Not sure how it is in Vic but in Queensland but even getting a motorcycle license is insanely difficult.
1. have had your P plates for a year (2 year process at least)
2. complete a online course
3. pass a knowledge test
4. now you have your L plates for a motorcycle
5. have your L plates for at least 90 days
6. pass another test
7. complete a riding course or pass a riding test
8. now you have your P plates for a motorcycle (not allowed to ride anything that has a power to weight ratio of 150kw per ton or mod your bike)
9. gotta have your motorcycle p plates for at least 2 years
10. complete another riding course or another riding test
11. now you have your open license (can ride any road legal bike or mod your own bike)
You just get a car license for 3 years then move to a bike licence. If you want a 600 supersport as your first bike then you are a complete nutter

Compare Australia to the UK, in the UK, the cost of insurance for anyone under 25 is insane, and its mandatory. Then you need to pay your annual road tax, if you've got an interesting car, thats over £700 (or about $1500 AUD). Then you pay about £1.50 ($3 AUD) per L for petrol, more than half of which is tax. Then we have congestion zones and low emission zones in some cities, which you have to pay money to the government for. Then weve got more speed cameras than you can shake a stick at. In terms of the availability of cars, we drive on the same side of the road as you, which is the opposite to the rest of Europe, so importing isnt exactly convenient. Ohh, also, every winter, the government dumps millions of tonnes of salt on the roads, so every single car is rusted to scrap by the time its about 20 years old. On the 4WDing side of things, there isnt a single offroad track in the UK that a reasonably health person couldnt walk both ways in a single day, and none of them are actually so difficult that you couldnt drive them in a bog standard SUV.
Now, you might point out that we've got more freedom to modify our cars, and from a legal standpoint, we do. Not by much, we still cant have decats or have tyres pocking outside the arches, but other than that, anything goes, so long as it passes an MoT. But of course, theres a downside - you have to tell your insurance company about your mods, and that makes the insurance even more expensive, and if you dont tell them, then thats illegal, and youll get a fine, points, etc etc.
Australia is probably the best country in the world to live if you are a 4WD enthusiast, and its probably amongst the best for sports car enthusiasts too.

Being someone who's been in the modified car and bike scene for decades, it's not as bad as it used to be as far as police presence goes. They need 2 officers per car or 2 motorcycle police nowadays which diminishes their presence. They could double their presence but Victoria is a nanny state run by cowards. The laws nowadays are draconian though, but be smart and avoid areas where there's a lot of hooning or where most residents drive AU Falcons and Commodores (shout outs Yorak Hunt). You'll find cops pick on people who are pushing it, just be smarter than they are it's not that hard.
I live in Sydney. I travel to Albury every year for Chryslers on the Murray.
On Friday and Saturday nights there's a road near the border that people cruise up and down, with bystanders on the side of the road, in a park or the footpath watching on. There are families there, and it's fun.
The councils on both sides of the border, along with the police want to ban this unsanctioned event. This in turn well hurt the the car show that has absolutely nothing to do with the weekend cruise.
For the first time in 20 odd years I'm seriously considering not attending. That cruise was why I would go and catch up with mates, now they want to kill it.
All these governments pushing EV's on the public want to do is to ban cars altogether, and bring forth 15 minute cities.

S.A is a lovely place to mod cars my dad owned a Toyota Supra that made over 800hp and he drove it as a daily for years and never got a fine or any problems from the police.

I was lucky enough to buy one off an old lady in the 90’s when I was a teenager for just $500. I had it for 14 years until some scumbag stole it. I sold my Harley in 2020 and bought my dream car another AP6 this time a Regal and it’s on classic plates which costs me just $50 a year to register. You have a log book and you are supposed to only drive it 60 times a year. Well I fill it out and drive my car all the time. Police don’t bother me they actually love it. I’m in the Albury, Griffith and Wagga area. You need to look into old Aussie cars they are available I bought mine in 2020 for $13,500 put $5000 on it to get it road worthy and it’s now insured for $40,000 a bit over what it’s worth but it’s pretty much irreplaceable. I will not do burnouts as I won’t put my car in danger. Seen too many car engines blow up. The way they treat P platers now is wrong my kids are getting old enough to drive soon and two years on your P’s and these logs that kids without two parents have trouble finding the time. I got my L’s learnt to drive went for my P’s and was on them for a year. That’s how it once was. Why it’s so stupid now is sad. One cool thing is I bought a BMW from 2005 that cost $70,000 new for just $7500 I’m getting it ready for my daughter it’s red and has sweet mags. Very safe and like a new car I’m just trying to fix a stupid oil leak that happens when the motor heats up.
Even the options for modified car insurance are very small. Shows the stigma still attached to modded vehicles. Just goes to show that Australia is also anti mod, even though upgraded brakes makes the car stop better than the stock crap.
We did make more than just Holden or Ford cars in Oz. There was of course Chrysler/Mitsubishi and Toyota, Leyland etc. Going further back, there was a local assembly company called AMI that assembled Knock Down cars from around the world.
I am not in the market for an expensive car (and never will), but I agree that still keeping the LCT is stupid, or should at least be increased.
And yes certain mods should be legal without expensive engineering.
luxury car tax came into existence in 2000 coinciding with the GST, and had nothing to do with toyota. it replaced the wholesale sales tax, which was simply a revenue raiser.

Yes the 70s 80 and 90s where the best for car guys when i was on my first P platesat 18 i drove a xy panelvan that had a 351 out of a cobra in it and on nitrous oxide and a top loader 4 speed i survived i didnt crash

Now try being a car guy in say Europe where simply learning how to drive costs upwards of $3000-$4000 and takes years to complete. Compare that to Australia where the total cost of a license is about $150 (Ls test Ps test combined). Australia is definitely pretty shit when it comes to overregulation but its certainly a lot better than the EU or the UK with their infamous TV license meme
In Victoria 40KPH zones including school zones are extremely strict where you will get 3-5 demerit points and a massive $400-$500 fine for speeding just 1KPH over the limit. If you’re caught speeding more than 5KPH over the limit in a 40KPH speed limit or slower then you will instantly loose your license/have your license suspended for 3 months or longer depending on how many other road offences you have under your license.
In SA it's 25 at school zones and roadworks.

Can attest, received a defect back in 2008 for an oil leak in the engine bay of my 87 Mazda MX-6 at 1am in the morning in WA. No leak, just an older car with a bit of dirt in the engine bay, always remember to clean and polish your engines before going out, while you are out and before you return from a night on the town when driving in Aus ^_^
the expensive cars they impound don't get crushed, they auction them off, Queensland did an impound auction about a year back and most of the cars were not even worth that much but were just in good nick, most of the cars that get crushed are skid cars and just complete shitboxes. most of the defects I hear about are from shitboxes and p platers that cut corners on modifying the car such as not getting an enginneer to sign it off (proving that the mod is done properly) due to being on a tight budget and dont accept that they cannot afford do it properly, other ones include obvious illegal modifications including excessive camber and lowering the car alot, if you look it up it does say you cannot have anything on the bottom of the car lower than 100mm(10cm) from the ground, so if you do that, you have to kinda expect that, that law seems to be the same everywhere.
You can have a modified exhaust as long as its not too loud which is in most places anyway, some states in America have modified exausts illegal across the board i have heard. People I know with modified cars have barely been bothered by the cops, they only got pulled over for speeding once.
what really ruins the car scene here is the hoon gangs, ie mexican hoon cartel. they give all car enthusiasts in Australia a bad name, they do burnouts in the most inappropriate locations including suburban streets and the middle of intersections in the middle of the day and busy higways. When they do it in suburban streets, not surprising, someone calls the cops and then the hoons attack the house of that person who called police and burnout on the drievway. They also have gatherings in large numbers, launch fireworks and post eveything on social media bringing lots of attention to themselves and when police show up they literally attack them. And car enthusiasts are all assumed to be associated with these guys which that's far from the case and you wonder why 'governments hate car enthusiests'
Here is my perspective on the whole industrial area thing you say it's for a one off 10 second burnout but it's not i ran a small business in a quiet industrial area for many years and it was a hot spot for the local car community aka . We had our security cameras smashed on multiple occasions by the lovely " car community " members we had rubbish from takeaway food left all over our driveways and gardens from the same gronks about 4 or 5 times a week . People pissing and shitting in the bushes and big puddles of puke from over indulgence we had our fire hose reels used hundreds of times to wet down the road then just left for us to clean up . Having our entire driveway and car park full of tyre marks and having to explain to customers that it wasn't from us cost us in lost sales and the best bit was if we where working when these gronks rocked up we would be threatened if we called the cops or reported them .
This is why I'm not gonna bother building or owning a nice street car. Daily shitter, race car for track days, and a 1000 without a plate and a dark tint helmet for fun with the cops :) On a real note tho, crazy how you can be pulled on the spot for owning a nice car and get a magical defect notice. Super shit laws.

I'm thinking of moving to Aus and I'm trying to figure out if your car scene is worse than the UK. For the issues you mentioned we don't have it nearly as bad, but our nation's class system keeps us all broke af compared to you guys, and they really shaft young drivers on insurance, making the car scene all but dead. Having any car at all is a major flex atp in this country. Your average UK car meet will be full of 'stage 1' remapped Fiestas with eyelids and 'locally hated' stickers and not much else. The roads are also dreadful (tons of potholes and extremely narrow, designed for horses and unchanged since) On the plus side, in smaller towns and rural areas you can basically drive however you want at night without interference from the police as they simply don't have the budget. If you can break into the track scene, that seems to be thriving, just mostly inacessible because of our stagnating wages. I was disappointed to hear that the australian track scene is dead, as I was planning on migrating to do FIFO mine work and enter track days and time attacks during my time off.
I think I’m a little bit luckier in WA. You can drive whatever on your Ls and Ps and I think you get all 12 points as well. The car scene is also good. Great variety. I have very rarely seen modified cars pulled over, and I don’t know if canaries are issued often because I’ve never seen one on a car before.
If you dont restrict the bureaucracy, they will not stop until you all have bicycles. I am now in the USA (South Carolina) where you can make a dirt bike street legal fairly easily. Also, there is no car inspections. It varies from State to State. Some states just banned JDM kei cars... The state of Georgia is at war with small JDM truck owners...

I had a 1993 TRD twin turbo supra. With a nice body kit..and I was getting pulled over by NSW highway police up to 3 times a week, and they were checking the same thing..
Here in Canada I have a turbo RSX-S and got a VI for font window tint but was told to do a full inspection but passed with everything else including no cat and all that.

Meh. As a car nerd in Australia since early highschool years (I'm late gen-X era, for reference) and biker for the last ~17 years I find it difficult to sympathize with most of your complaints.
All those behaviours are completely optional. You simply don't have to do them. At all. If you don't, you get cheaper insurance as a bonus, and of course further savings from not getting fines, fixing defects, etc. Expect this trend to intensify, by the way, with modern cars all phoning home to manufacturers with information about how you use the vehicle, which in turn gets sold to data brokers who then sell it on to insurers. Choice Australia and The Guardian have written about this recently.
In the car/bike scene there seems to be a common unwillingness to accept personal responsibility for consequences and/or their impact on others, and it makes me wonder how much that is contributing to the outcomes of their interactions with law enforcement. Have they tried being grownups for even a single second? I have personally been a very naughty boi in the past - can't deny the allure or enjoyment of it - but consistently experienced pretty extreme leniency, including having what really should have been a "get in the van" moment in Tasmania downgraded to a very minor fine. Why? I didn't ask and don't know, but I certainly didn't go on unhinged rants about how I have a "right" or "need" to be a total dickhead like I've read so frequently in car/bike forums.
Some years ago I heard serious hooning late one night, which very suddenly stopped and didn't resume. By chance the next day I saw the offending car (verified by correlation with a media article that included a photo) on a flatbed. It was so thoroughly mangled that I could only identify it as a Silvia by one partially-surviving taillight. Three people died. That shit needs to end. Are you still surprised that governments are ratcheting up the laws & enforcement of those laws?
I do agree that more choice of vehicles would be nice (I'd love a Peugeot 106 GTI!), but the only way that's happening, I think, is if we switch to LHD. I'm a little surprised that we still haven't.
What about the stupid laws on modifications and how hard it is to get a modification plate? Yes, people shouldn't do stuff like burnouts and excessive speeding, but how does lowering a car, nice rims, and a exhaust affect people. It would actually boost revenue for mechanic shops for people who aren't capable of installing these parts because most people are too stupid to install this stuff

I got a defect on my bike because he didn't actually know how fast i was going and couldn't give me a ticket for speeding, just thought I looked like I was going too fast (my mate in a stock WV just ahead was going faster than me. I had to drive straight home and then i could only drive it to a "place of repair" or home. No 30 day timer to get it fixed, and it was my only vehicle.
The "major defect" that meant it couldn't possibly be safe enough to be driven on the roads for a week (have to make a booking which usually takes almost a week to get)? Muffler too loud.

Even the speed limits here are horrid. 75% of the US has a max speed limit of 120kmph. Fair enough for safety but if i’m taking a back road where i see maybe one other car for an hours worth of driving you’d reckon i should be able to go faster than 100

Luxury car tax is only a thing for euro car guys. Used JDM and brand new WRX, 86, Miata etc all are priced under the LCT. I still see some mad builds in Vic, I think now, car guys just grew up. It's now more about clean looking builds.
Dude, if you've got over $75,000 to spend on a non work vehicle you're either wealthy or bad with money. You also make it sound like a natural right to hoon in a car when it's far from it. In Australia we do have cheap cars but it’s rare to get a good car for a cheap price.

Sorry bud. I lived through the 70s 80s and 90s of the most awesome and iconic street muscle cars. And a proud former owner of a 72 Holden SS. We would cruise the city streets and hang with the cars the chicks and our loyal mates. Street races on a Sunday were easy. There literly were no other cars on the road. Everyone was home playing cricket or watching football. We never did stupid mods to our cars like young kids do today. And our cars never drank aeroplane fuel like rice burners do today. In fact a fat exhaust was a two and a half inch twin exhaust and a pair of extractors and a 650 holley. We played by the rules we followed the law when it came to mods. Today's hoons do what ever they like and to hell with the neighbour's or anyone else.
