I would have guessed Porsche 918 and the Lexus LFA at the top 2 spots. Both essentially being engineering test beds that lost huge amounts of money, despite the vehicles high price. Both are stunning works of mechanical art.
Finsnzieller Verlust 🤔 Für die Käufer des 918 ein großartiges Geschäft Für Porsche 🤔 Als Markenbotschaft ...Werning, die sich an anderer Stelle bezahlt macht
I remember reading one of the first auto magazine reviews of the LS400: 'It's like some new Mercedes Benz; some new Mercedes Benz that Mercedes Benz hasn't gotten around to making yet'. They they flew off the showroom floors, sending Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and Infinity all back to the drawing boards for years. It was that good. And those cars, just like so many Mercedes, were good for 500,000 miles if well cared for.

I thought thought that, over engineered means the vehicle is capable of more than it is designed to do so I’m surprised the gto made it yet no mention of a skyline gtr or supra or most 80’s Japanese sports cars
Yeah. When I think over engineered, I think needlessly complex German engineering which mechanics hate to work on. Overbuilt seems more appropriate here imho.
@@pb6198 Yeah I 100% agree but what I’m saying is GTO, Skylines, Supras, Preludes, Silvias etc all were over engineered which I think we can all agree, but the Bugatti was engineered exactly how it turned out, its not like you can add big a turbo on and safely get another 200bhp because the engine was made out of the same metals used to make Thors Hammer
The Tucker 48 was built in 1948 and had features that weren't standard till the 90's lol.. look it up, shatter proof glass, fuel injection, directional headlights, collapsible steering columb for crash safety. That just a few, check it out.
This channel's idea of over engineered: "These cars have ahead of time technology, or are well designed and executed, or are unique." Mechanic's idea of over engineering: "This car is a disaster and a mess to do anything on!" To them every over engineered car is a German car, most fwd cars, and anything that complicates a repair needlessly. But oddly enough a Porsche boxster was the easiest car I ever worked on
BMW's really excel at being impossible for the owner to maintain these days, I'm surprised they haven't innovated a way to make the brakes, tyres and suspension systems crazy complicated yet... give them time.
@@Tribulation88 I can agree there. BMW doesn't even want you to be able to check actual fluid levels via a dipstick unless it's an electronic display. When we got our Porsche I noticed it too had that display and all I could say was 'oh hell no we bringing this thing back' but thankfully it had physical checking. I had a buddy with a BMW asking for help with some of those systems with the brakes and such, and I just couldn't wrap my head around the overly complicated nonsense.
Is there really such a thing as over-engineered? If there is, I'd say any GM vehicle with the famous 3800 V6, probably the most extensively engineered motor on the planet.
I grew up so wanting to drive some of the great smaller cars, the 914, Lotuses, Miata, MR2, even the later Fieros. But I'm too tall to really fit in them comfortably; some, I couldn't even use the clutch once the door was closed. And I couldn't afford the big cars. I eventually got a 928, long after they were new, but luckily found one in good condition. Truly a wonderful car.
The story of the LS400 is honestly quite badass, like seriously where else would you see such dedication to making the best car possible? Suprise they haven't made a movie about it
The G wagon in Australia was meant to replace the six wheel drive Landrover, but the Landrover is still and always will be a better off road military vehicle.
9:47 THIS is why I love the Veyron (and by extension, the Chiron) Not because of it being super expensive. Not because of it being super fast. It's because it's so well engineered to do what it can do. As Clarkson (who once dismissed the Veyron as just a pipe dream back when it was in development) said it was the automotive equivalent of the Concorde.
Having been lucky enough to drive a Veyron. It is a car that both terrifies and excites me all at the same time. Under normal driving conditions, it honestly is as easy to drive as a standard car.
I’d swap the LS 400 for the even more crazy LS 600Lh hybrid. It’s hybrid V-8 MPG was about the same as the V-6, though not sure if that one had the L wheelbase. Also, I’d consider the BMW i8 hybrid, it’s very complex and a nightmare to maintain - look both cars up on UA-cam. Finally, some of the Citroen sedans were amazing, ahead of their times but not imported in US due to variable height suspension banned by the DOT.
I had a ‘93 3000GT. That pearlish white color. My first car. It was a hand-me-down clunker. I was 15 in 2003 when I got it. I had to carry around jugs of water and add some every time I stopped. I had to do other random little things to keep it going day to day. It was worth every minute of it. Hands down my favorite car I’ve ever owned. It was powerful, man, for an everyday kind of sports car. More powerful than any 15 year old needs in suburbia. But it drove like a dream, and I don’t think anything has ever made me feel as cool as that car made me feel when I was driving it around back then. Those were the days. Where does the time go?
My mate had a black gto, 3 litre, twin turbo,4WD, 24v...😱 absolutely ridiculously awesome car, he opened the taps, and not only did I sink back into the passenger chair, but my legs came up off the floor and as long as he accelerated, I COULDNT put my legs back on the floor...😂😂🤘 and the way it goes around corners, phenomenal. It sticks to the road like shit to a blanket, HELL OF A CAR🤘🤘🤘
The Porsche 959 cost twice as much to develop & engineer than Porsche sold it for. The Lexus LFA was in development & engineered for a decade. I agree with you on the 1st gen Mitsubishi GTO too, it was so advanced & over engineered. I think the 3rd gen Honda Prelude 4WS was also a over engineered car because Honda designed it with a mechanical 4WS system, rather than the electronic version they put on later model's. It allowed the car to four wheel steer constantly rather than when the electronics would detect when it needs to. It allowed the car to have a faster slalom speed than any supercar or hypercar available, best thing is - to this day there has been no faults of the mechanical 4WS system that this gen Prelude has. The only other car's missing that was over engineered was the Saab 900 Turbo & McLaren F1. The McLaren's engine bay was lined with gold because gold was the best heat reflector available at the time & it was the first carbon fiber bodied car. It also still holds the highest top speed from a naturally aspirated car & set the record for the highest top speed on launch.
You cannot "over-engineer" an automobile. More tech, more goodies........more is ALWAYS better. That's why cars like the Nissan Skyline GT-R and the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 will always be some of the finest cars ever made.
Oh you can absolutely over engineer a vehicle. Engineers come up with dumber and dumber unnecessary electronically controlled, sensor laden bullshit every year to justify their employment. Engineers are the masters of "fixing" shit that ain't broken. Vehicle evap systems are a perfect example of unnecessary engineering.

I think we need to revisit what "overengieered" means.....
@@CalsAutoShow gto is incredibly over engineered no Matter how you look at it
@@pb6198 Yeah I 100% agree but what I’m saying is GTO, Skylines, Supras, Preludes, Silvias etc all were over engineered which I think we can all agree, but the Bugatti was engineered exactly how it turned out, its not like you can add big a turbo on and safely get another 200bhp because the engine was made out of the same metals used to make Thors Hammer
@@CalsAutoShow These cars aren't overengineered. They are relieable, but shit as for quality.
The Tucker 48 was built in 1948 and had features that weren't standard till the 90's lol.. look it up, shatter proof glass, fuel injection, directional headlights, collapsible steering columb for crash safety. That just a few, check it out.
This channel's idea of over engineered: "These cars have ahead of time technology, or are well designed and executed, or are unique."
Mechanic's idea of over engineering: "This car is a disaster and a mess to do anything on!"
To them every over engineered car is a German car, most fwd cars, and anything that complicates a repair needlessly.

9:47 THIS is why I love the Veyron (and by extension, the Chiron)
Not because of it being super expensive. Not because of it being super fast.
It's because it's so well engineered to do what it can do.
As Clarkson (who once dismissed the Veyron as just a pipe dream back when it was in development) said it was the automotive equivalent of the Concorde.
Like the Concorde they never made profits with it, it's just a Prestige project
I love my UNDER-engineered '92 Geo Metro Convertible, "plane paper bag basic" and a blast to drive.
Having been lucky enough to drive a Veyron. It is a car that both terrifies and excites me all at the same time. Under normal driving conditions, it honestly is as easy to drive as a standard car.
No W124, no W140, no S8, no Phaeton, no Citroen DC, no Land Cruiser... Are you kidding me?
We all know that have owned and driven a Land cruiser they are at the top of the Heap!

Phaeton - godzilla - the hamer
