    Yep had one of these awhile back (wouldn't be surprised if this was my old one actually). Really great sounding amp; Kyle did a great job demoing and explaining it. The comparison to a Quickrod is on point. Tight and punchy, but open. The need for the footswitch to change channels and for the extra gain stage is annoying (no switch on the amp itself). The Dover DA-50 seems very (very) similar, fixes the footswitch issue) and is significantly less expensive.

    Imagine rolling up to a show where everyone is playing a 6505 or a dual rec and everyone is laughing because you brought a Hiwatt. Then you plug it up and it sounds like this…..you’d instantly standout from everyone tone wise.

      I can totally relate to this. In the early 2000's when I played out frequently, it seems like every band had a Dual Rec or 5150. I mean they do work but after a while......it all sounded the same and almost everyone played EMG's in those days.

    I use a few Hiwatt and Reeves and before I found this I had always just put a good Disto and EQ in front to get a similar tone, but when I saw the Maxwatt demo I pulled the trigger so fast that my grandma felt it. Yeah Kyle did a really accurate demo on this amp, It sounds exactly like this, but in person, I feel its got a little more thump between notes. All in all though, yes this is awesome review. • @FourT6and22
      @FourT6and22 2 роки тому +4

      No, not really. I had this amp. It's built... ok. Not "military spec". That's a complete myth in the guitar amp world. No guitar amps are built "mil spec." Also this is a modern, British-built amp. And "mil-spec" are outdated requirements specified by the US military for how electronics need to be constructed, dating back to like... the '70s and '80s lol. I don't think an amp built in modern-day England is going to follow antiquated guidelines outlined by a foreign military from 30+ years ago... It's marketing hype.

    • @0f0t0graph
      @0f0t0graph 2 роки тому +5

      @@FourT6and22 .....mmm no. Mil-spec is still used, still relevant, and has evolved over time. Many commercial items are still made to mil-spec including a number of commercial and ham radios etc. A mil-spec amp? I agree with you and very much doubt any amp is built to mil spec. It costs more to build to mil-spec.

    • @FourT6and22
      @FourT6and22 2 роки тому

      @@0f0t0graph I was speaking specifically about guitar amps. The modern US military doesn't use vacuum tubes as far as I'm aware? I could be wrong there. So any "military specifications" a guitar amp might meet, are going to be outdated by definition since the technology is obsolete. Sure, ham radios I believe. There are certainly a few niche markets with products built to mil-spec guidelines from many years ago because it's still relevant within a that subculture. Guitar amps are not one of them lol. At least I've never seen one. And I've been inside a lot of amps, including a Super-Hi 50. The Super-Hi 50 is wired up ok, not great. Just ok. It's definitely no "work of art". I have photos if anybody wants to see 'em. It would be especially strange if a British company built a guitar amp to adhere to guidelines the U.S. military established. Anyway... I laugh every time I see/hear "mil-spec construction" thrown around to hype a product.

    • @Pupperino7773
      @Pupperino7773 8 місяців тому

      @@FourT6and22I think some common sense needs to be used here. If you were to go back in time to when tubes were the norm, the mil spec then would be what they are referring to right? To me this is obvious but I guess not

    • @FourT6and22
      @FourT6and22 8 місяців тому

      @@Pupperino7773 No. "Mil-Spec" is an actual specific thing. The US Military published many documents over the years detailing how various types of electronic equipment must be built/assembled in order to pass whatever specifications they came up with. Guitar amp builders tended to use this term as marketing BS. But no guitar amp company has every, nor will ever, build their tube amps to any military specification. It just doesn't make sense to do it. So any time you see this phrase thrown around, it's just marketing nonsense.

And I can tell you that while you don't solo much, your rhythm guitr playing is spectacular. Nails yight and aggressive and executed way more precisely and faster than I was ever capable of. I love this amp.. The tonal characteristics and dynamics are are really a cut above from what I can hear. Those low-mids are just great. I feel that the structure of those frequencies are what really sculpt the tones of really great amps. Anyone and everyone has bass-mid-treble. So adding and allowing for those frequencies to shine through are what in my ears' opinions' set this amp and what Mike does as a builder of high gain amps, apart from the rest. I thought when you changed guitars/pups, to the passive voicing with the fishman's that the tone just really opened everything up for that amp even more. The transparency of tones was real subtle yet still apparent. Especially noticable at the, 17:53 onward mark. Great demo/review..

    Those "fizzy" settings towards the end actually sounded the best to my ears. All the other settings sound great too.

    I'm confused by this video. I had this amp. Not this exact one, but a Super Hi 50. To my knowledge, I am one of only a handful of people in the USA to have bought one of these direct from Hiwatt. The way you describe this amp functioning doesn't make sense to me. The gains shouldn't be interactive. One is not high freq. and the other is not low freq. And to be honest, I don't hear any sound change when you start sweeping Gain 2 in the video. They are tied to the exact same spot in the circuit and switchable via a relay using the footswitch. They shouldn't both active at the same time. You need the footswitch to make them function. And you never demo the 4th gain stage in your video, which makes me wonder if you have the footswitch? The dual gains and dual masters are there so you can set the amp up with two different volume/gain levels. Like a faux second channel. Hit the button on the switch and Gain 1 is active. Hit the button again and Gain 2 is active. Either this amp was modified by someone or there's a malfunction or there's something else going on. Can you confirm? And man... if you haven't been able to activate the 4th gain stage, then you're missing out on 50% of what this amp can do. I've got two videos of mine on my channel for reference. You can also download the user manual from Hiwatt, which will explain the functionality.

    Sounds cool but high gain hiwatts make about as much sense as poopy flavored popsicles.
    Said differently, Hiwatt is a clean amp.

      So are fender amps, but then there's the 5150 III. Not everything has to be black and white!

    • @KidNato
      @KidNato 2 роки тому

      @@belligerentamateur that would be a valid argument if the 5150 III had a classic a spaghetti Fender logo on the front of the amp but it doesn't.

      @@KidNato the early ones do, and they are all built by fender in fender factories. They're fenders. Silly argument.

      Hiwatts make great pedal platforms. If you have a distortion/fuzz/overdrive pedal, well then...

    It was developped entirely by Mike Fortin and went to the UK to built the first 50 with Kee Mayer, the founder of Dover when he was still at Hiwatt, or something along those lines. There's a 2019 NAMM demo where he says it himself and walk through the amp. No wonders this thing rip! Your demo sounds VERY good!

    This is a beast Kyle. Much more pleasing to my ears than the Cali. Cali lasted about 2 weeks. You did a good job on this video as always
