In case anyone is wondering in the future, part of the reason older Marshalls EQ doesn’t feel particularly strong is because they’re passive filters. The “neutral” setting is actually supposed to be all knobs on the TMB set to max, rolling them back is simply allowing less of those frequencies through. They aren’t additive, they’re subtractive. It’s why on some amps, turning down the EQ all the way also stops any sound from playing, simply all the frequencies are being filtered out. On an 800 for example, try diming all the EQ and subtracting until you get the sound you like. Perhaps you may find that an average setting like bass 6, mids 4, treble 7 sounds similar but “weaker” than having them set to 9/7/10.
I'm a zoomer and I love both the old-school Marshall sound and the high-gain sound. It's no surprise that the Silver Jubilee excels at thrash given that Gary Holt uses one nowadays and it's a different kind of sound than a boosted 2203.
More marshall pls we need more offended boomers (srsly tho not every marshall has to be played like a plexi theres a reason they got more gain as they went on....)
The silver jubilee is one of my favorite amps of all time, primarily for the punk sounds. Brian from bad religion played a jubilee for quite some time and I fell in love with them.
these amps are sort of an extension of the 2210 and 2205 JCM800’s. They have a plate driven EQ which is different to the typical cathode follower EQ of most Marshalls. IMO plate driven EQ’s like being driven hard. The diode clipping is in a different part of the circuit to the Jose style. I feel like the later 80’s Marshalls were experimenting to get channel switching, fx loops, more gain and better master volumes working better and the Jubilee is sort of where it clicked.
I must say..... I have owned this amp about 3 weeks. There is something so utterly sophisticated about this Marshall in comparison and I've been through lots of them. It does exactly what you want from Marshall. Probably my favourite Marshall of all time. I'm not much a metal player and I know its strength is more for a rock/hard rock sound but you've done a fantastic take on this amp Kyle. Thanks
It sounded amazing. About a year ago I upgraded my DSL for the 2525 version of this amp and I love it. As demonstrated, it needs a boost for metal, so I copy Gary Holt and hit it hard with both a Boss SD-1 and his Pro Tone mid boost. I'm very happy with it.

It has LED's inside for crunch , overdrive tones , Diodes are hard clipping/compressing and used for distortion generation, LED's have softer cut in so sound more tube like overdrive tones. If you could see them , they light up as they kick in.
Had a 900 and played it through a Marshall cab (900 era) and an oversized Mesa Rectifier cab. The Marshall sounded better through the Mesa cab, FWIW. The Jubilee came out when I was in high school and it was the amp to have at the time. I still pine for one because of that, but I'd probably replace the speakers from the matching cab with V30s.
I ordered one at Guitar Center when the reissue came out. They tried to talk me out of it. The sales guy said it can't do metal. I must have been right since Gary Holt used them in Slayer.

Sounds sick! I’m pleasantly surprised actually! Not as much gain as the dsl but plenty of gain, nice and tight. Literally just like a better balanced, more clear, more gain 800. Love it
Had the DSL and TSL, I preferred the TSL tbh. Both are good, but the reduced but still sufficient gain plus the sweet low mids makes me wanna buy another and risk eviction.
Top notch distortion tones thru out...the apex/zenith of heavy tube overdrive I thought!!! Duncan distortion pickup, and various pedals were killer sounding through this Jubilee!!! Marshall rules!!!
This "boomer" is a fan of tasty Marshall, metal tones. Have been for a few decades now🤣 started out with the mighty jcm800, and now I actually have a code 100. It does it all. Metal, more metal, and boomer. 😉 Also it does a pretty good job of recreating the plexi sound. Which is great if and when you want it. I love the sound you were getting here. I need one of these. The silver jubilee is one of my favorites for sure.
It took me 23 years into playing guitar to find out this is the amp for me. It’s incredible and so happy they reissued it ! Then I got the slash signature Marshall afd100.
Loved this video, Kyle! Damn, I've also slept on this amp, for so dang long. Holy schnikies!!!! It's truly is amazing! I'm assuming, in a mix, none of those bottom freq's "would actually" be missed, but as a guitarist I understand the need for them. What really freaked me out, was it's range and it's ability do as many different sounds as it did. I'm saying this because I've owned just about every JCM800 (minus the 200 major), and how they kinda just did it's one sound with just a difference in gain level. This amp isn't that. WOW! Thank you for doing this video, brutha. I finally bought a Splawn, got a Comp 50, LOVING IT! Thanks for the great videos \m/
I feel like this should be the next Human Animal amp. It definitely has plenty of hardcore cred with Brian from Bad Religion using them for like his whole career.
just plugged into my new 2555x black tolex head for the first time...WOW! Best stock Marshall that I have ever played! I've owned stock DSL 50, DSL 100, 2203X, JVM 410, JVM 410 JS, and the 2555X is the only one that has made me happy (sold the others as they just couldnt get to sweet spot for me). It does take a OD, boost/EQ to get me to where I want it to be but once i'm there I am totally (finally) happy with the stock Marshall tone \m/
These are great amps for people that want to play at all volume levels. The salesman tried to talk me out of buying it. I have been playing it since they were reissued back in 2015.
I got one a couple years ago and play similar stuff as you. I found putting a parametric eq in the loop and taking out those boxy low mids makes this thing a holy grail amp. It’s incredible and $1500 less than a new 800 reissue.
@sk8125 I just ordered a mini Jubilee. I chose it over the DSL. DsL is cheaper but Gary Holt switched from the DSL to the Jubilee so I figured there probably is a good reason he did
I remember hearing a modded Marshall Super Lead that was so stupid awesome! This Marshall sounds so much like that amp! I actually dig it with or without the boost. You crushed this amp demo!
I gigged with one of these in the early 90's and it didn't have anywhere near this much gain. LOL A lot of the time I ran an ADA MP-1 through the effects loop to get the sounds/switching I wanted.
I've used 5150's for as long as I've played guitar, people have always complemented me on my sound and it's something I worked at because it's very important to me,I always thought I should like Marshalls, but everytime I played one with a band in a mix,I'm constantly reaching for the volume knob and messing with the eq section trying to adjust it and just never could find one that worked for me,but this one, this one seems to have the magic sauce, with the buxsom boost it sounded killer,I'm going to definitely demo one for myself,I may have finally found that Marshall that I can love.

Yeah ive always had peaveys or h&k ect but the old marshalls just sound like a blanket is lifted off the cabinet. I had a jcm 2000 but i found it very fizzy.
That is a stellar thrash tone. It sounds perfect. Everyone else can just go home. Do you think this head would sound good paired with a mesa rectifier 2x12 cab?
The rhythm clip is a built in TS/sd-1 circuit , that iswhy you like it , why you consider it “pretty modern sounding”, and why the Marshall purists trash talked it for years until they caught on:) Enjoy it I’ve had mine since 1991
I have the 20 watt studio version. The cleans are pretty awesome too. I just happened to plug my nocaster into the clean channel with some delay on. It's wonderful
The rhythm clip adds a diode for the clean channel, you didn't really touch on it in your video but would be interesting to see what sounds you can get out of that with one of your many boost pedals.
I just can’t get into the Marshall sound for high gain metal. They always sound so “boxy”, and they just seem to lack that low end “punch”. They’re great for doom/stoner/classic rock/etc., but I just can’t get the sound for drop tuning /djent/neo metal/etc. that I need. The best amps for me so far are EVH 5150 III / EVH 5150 Iconic, Soldano SLO 100, and the MB Dual Rec.
My buddy used a jcm800 in our old thrash band and I used the carvin x100 head. they blended well in the mix. Another friend in a different band in town had the silver jubilee full stack and it sounded awesome he played thrash as well. That sounded great through the Mesa cab.
Actually splawn was huge Marshall dealer and everyone came in and would bring Marshall heads back he started nodding them and actually made Marshall sales go through the roof! But yeah many modded them but from what I remember it’s what launched splawn!
I’ve never understood why people think that Marshall’s are incapable of achieving “metal” tones. They sound excellent! I think many people believe that massive amounts gain is what makes an amp good for metal. But everyone has different tastes. Too each their own.
Great video Kyle! Epic tone! Gave me goosebumps! “Amps like this legendary gem inspire us to write more and influence greater creativity within us from the knowledge we gain through experiencing a different sound while formulating shapes into riffs to uncover our own tone.” -Angry Riffs
I have 2 Marshall's, JCM 2000 DSL 100 and a 900 50w with 6L6 tubes. I play through a V30 x G12T-75 (2x2) and they sound pretty good although the 900 is a lot thinner but when I run through my sons full Vintage 30 cab both amps sound way better. I was thinking of making mine an all V30 cab again but I am one V30 short because I gave it to my son for his church cab. Oh and I also run a Buxom Boost as well 👌
I also have 2 Marshall's, JCM 2000 DSL 50 and a JVM 410HJS & also play through a V30 x G12T-75 (2x2). I love that mix and it seems to suit both amps really well! Never played a 900 so I can't speak to that. Always had an interest to try the Silver Jube.
That sounds ridiculously good Kyle makes me want to buy a silver jubilee RI even though I just bought a 1987x RI last year and love it! Love your channel BTW it has become one of my go to channels! Rock ON brother!
Does this amp have 2 master volumes where I can use a footswitch to boost volumes for leads ? I’d like to keep it in the dirty channel to boost volumes without having to switch from clean to dirty
Killer demo Kyle!I was trying to decide what overdrive to boost this bad boy with!!!The Friedman Buxom boost is the way I’m going! Thanks!I get my Silver Jubilee from Sweetwater at the end of February 2023!Cant wait to fire it up!Again great demo!Cheers,Wendell.
It's a shame you don't have a Proco Rat at hand to show everyone here how that sounds, it sits right up there with the SD-1 as one of the go-to high gain Marshall boosts.
you should do one since there's no videos of people using that crappy pedal to boost marshalls, probably for good reason, only boomers and hipsters bother with a rat. A rat cuts out too much bass and boost too much mids which isn't what any good marshalls want, unless its a marshall code set on a dual rec mode.
@@0megalul309 You're clueless, the rat is a staple of oldschool thrash and death metal, it has a completely unique sound from other overdrive pedals, it fills out the right frequencies and completely changes how the amp sounds and reacts. It's awesome.
@@ilikepotatoes1345 go ahead and live in your bubble. If you're so "right" why does no one use it? The rat makes your expensive amp feel like a pedal with 0 pick dynamics and a compressed muddy tone. What’s the volume like that close? To get a really good sound from my JCM 800 2210, it needs to be fairly loud. Not concert loud, but it makes my ears ring after about 5-10 minutes of playing, and I sit that close too.

I’ve never understood why people think that Marshall’s are incapable of achieving “metal” tones. They sound excellent! I think many people believe that massive amounts gain is what makes an amp good for metal. But everyone has different tastes. Too each their own.
What people?
a marshall with an SD1 in front is the foundation of metal tone
@@a-nus that’s what I’m sayin!
Totally agree
"No More Mr. Nice Guy" riff. Very cool!
Love this amp. I have the mini version and it slays. Agree an eq in the loop works really well to add some extra resonance.
I’ve always wanted one of these since hearing my dad talk about them, but they’ve always been too expensive.
Its a good investment though, a good tube Marshall will last a lifetime, with just basic servicing.
Great video Kyle! Epic tone! Gave me goosebumps! “Amps like this legendary gem inspire us to write more and influence greater creativity within us from the knowledge we gain through experiencing a different sound while formulating shapes into riffs to uncover our own tone.” -Angry Riffs
Got some well behaved chug to it without any boost, kind of reminiscent of JCM 900 tone.
The more i hear this amp. the more and more i want it i love how versitial it is.
Kyle Bull so you like the Buxom or the Waza more for this amp?
I would also recommend, if you haven't already, trying a Marshall JCM900 SLX.
Hey Kyle nice seeing this man !!
How do leads sound with this amp? With pq3 or 4 - could that get you into dime tones?
Does this amp have 2 master volumes where I can use a footswitch to boost volumes for leads ? I’d like to keep it in the dirty channel to boost volumes without having to switch from clean to dirty
Killer demo Kyle!I was trying to decide what overdrive to boost this bad boy with!!!The Friedman Buxom boost is the way I’m going! Thanks!I get my Silver Jubilee from Sweetwater at the end of February 2023!Cant wait to fire it up!Again great demo!Cheers,Wendell.
Really captures that Marshall 'what would it sound like if the speakers were made from tissue paper' tone well.
I always thought it was more of like a blues amp.... Very cool! Sick amp.🤘
It can really do it all. Bonamassa runs 2 of these, cranked, on stage every night.
when I play heavy we have a very similar style and taste in tones this is super handy.
Proco rat fans are one of the most obnoxious group of clowns in the guitar community, even the klon and ts cult is less annoying.
@@0megalul309 A twitch chat orbitor calling someone else obnoxious is a little ironic, don't you think?
@@ilikepotatoes1345 still waiting for proof on your baseless claims for how the rat sounds good with a marshall.
What’s the volume like that close? To get a really good sound from my JCM 800 2210, it needs to be fairly loud. Not concert loud, but it makes my ears ring after about 5-10 minutes of playing, and I sit that close too.
real loud.
@ I thought so. Worth it though.
For a second I was terrified you were actually gonna apologize 😅 Shakespearean acting dude
Love whatcha doing, bro! Keep it up!!! Rock on!!! 🤘🤘🤘
This only the second Marshall I’ve ever heard that I liked a lot(the first is my old DSL). I’d really love to see you do a comparison video on the the different Mesa halfback cabs you have, provided that they all have different speakers in them
Where do you live? I'm parting with one that has 2x EV and 2 black shadows in the Charlotte, NC region.
@@John-mh9ty not close. I have one already, black shadow c90s on top and old eminence on the bottom and it doesn’t sound great at louder volumes. I’m trying to decide what to replace the bottom two with
@@playthefightriffjohn843 V30s pair well black shadows as do G12-65's. Obviously the EV are Clarice but I don't know how the newer ones compare.
Another total sleeper, especially if you're running a Mark series anp is the neodymium JBL vintage ones. Those speakers are super dope. Thump better than anything else and are very clear.
It’s on the list no doubt! Would love to hear vs 900 slx
Same here
Played the matching cab and really liked it too
Kyle, You should demo an amp outside while cooking steaks. I bet your viewers will like it, including me! Yes, I like to have some fun.
Da hell is Gary hahahaha
