That's Not Supposed to Happen- Silver Dollar City Train -Ep26 Confessions of a Theme Park Worker

  • Things don't always go the way they should on the steam train. Unexpected events may change how the robbery is done, or a major blunder may happen as well. Here's a look at a couple common events and my personal biggest "fail moment" on the Frisco Silver Dollar Line steam train at Silver Dollar City.
    A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a photopass photographer at Walt Disney World and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and train robber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at Silver Dollar City. With 10 years of working in the parks, there's lost of stories to tell. Here is some of them...

    Can't stop laughing at the conductor saying "NEVER MIND" right as the show started and the bell ringing xD

    Or the one time when I was scratching my head and my conductor hat fell off by Powder Keg on the way out to the robbery in the dark of night. Needless to say, when I went up and around the bend to find Yankees, I REALLY went up and around the bend. "Im surprised the robbers didn't make a big deal about me being so winded from running up the tiny little hill.

      Was it you that dropped a hat one time that the robbers fetched for you between shows? The conductor came out the next time around to find "conductor Alphie" telling him how to run his train. LOL

      No, I RAN all the way up to Powder Keg to get my hat while the train was being robbed.

    This just popped up in my feed. Great video. I remember going on the train and there's the part where the robbers say their mom is on the train and go to a random female passenger. The conductor asknif she's really the robber's mom. Usually the guest says no, but this lady said yes and derailed (pun intended) the rest of the skit.

      LOL, here is one for you then. I worked for a couple seasons at a different theme park operating multiple rides. One of the ones I was operating one evening was a powered launch coaster. It seemed like a normal run and since it was during the Halloween season I was welcoming everyone back as "Boils and Ghouls." Anyway at one point everyone is in and almost ready to go when I hear someone say, "Excuse me sir! Is this thing safe?" About midway along the coaster is a middle aged woman who is strapped in basically at the point of no return and I stop and look at her. Now I am a person who can generally prank anyone I want and usual have the good stories since I was about twice the age of the average worker. And here I am almost dumbfounded someone would ask this question after they are strapped in. So what was about half a second but felt like I had all the time in the world to come up with an answer I pop off and say (while keeping a dead straight face), "I don't know..... But I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!" The people nearby were cracking up laughing and the woman whom I answered was very flustered to say the least. I ended up finally explaining after she stammered for a bit and everyone had stopped laughing that the ride was checked by maintenance every morning and then tested by the ride operators before starting the day and had operated all day without any issue but every time I remember the "deer in the headlights" look she had I have to laugh a little more.
      I parted ways this year from that park due to issues they were having with their supervisory staff and maintenance staff doing their jobs correctly but hopefully I will rise again elsewhere in the near future.

      OMG I was there too! I grew up with a Silver Dollar City season pass so I was familiar with the show, and I remember that particular show being really odd. I had guessed that there was a SNAFU with the shotgun, and I thought the whole team did a great job of improvising through the situation. It really increased my respect for the actors. I think it's great that I can finally hear what had actually happened; I had no idea! Y'all did great, Sir Willow!

The train robbery was really the highlight of my whole experience. So it was fun to hear this story! The "stick up" joke was just great. :D

    The train ride has to be my favorite thing there, and you do look kinda familiar too. Now one thing needs to be asked, how many times has some lady been accused of being "Ma" and actually went along with it? The one time I saw that happen, I think the guys putting on the show were laughing even harder than we were on the train!

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 років тому +1

    • @jameskarllipscomb2948
      @jameskarllipscomb2948 7 років тому +3

      It happened about 1/3 rd of the time when I was there, and of course we had a script for that.
      C: "Lady? do you claim these boys to be your sons?"
      Lady: "Yes"
      C: "You do?!"
      Bolins: "She does?!"
      C: "Lady ... you ain't supposed to do that ..." etc.
      Bolins & conductor act like it's never happened before ...
      One of the few times when the conductor gets the laughs.

    I can't believe I'm the only one to ask here but -- Why in the world did the conductors have real, loaded shotguns? It sounds as if the fluke accident of the gun falling down and off the train -- and firing? -- is enough to make me wonder about the safety of this.

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 років тому +14

      the only time the gun is loaded is right before it's fired, and it's only loaded with a blank gunpowder charge. If you ever watch a video of the robbery, you'll see the conductor load it as he's going down the steps to leave and get back on the train. Otherwise the gun is never loaded, and certainly not with a shotgun shell (it's actually fitted so a regular shell can't go in it) just to make sure there aren't any "incidents"

    • @StamfordBridge
      @StamfordBridge 7 років тому +6

      You answered the question I asked and even the one I didn't ask but wanted to: it was loaded with a blank to go off. Thanks for the answer and for these vids.

      SirWillow plus be sure to check out my UA-cam channel where I posted my Illinois Railway Museum videos, I noticed you lettered all your trains at Silver Dollar City are lettered FRISCO, well at our museum we actually have a operational steam locomotive that worked for the real Frisco railroad it's a 2-10-0 Russian Decapod #1630. Why Russian? Because it was built by the Baldwin locomotive works in Philadelphia during the First World War, but it was destined to be shipped to Russia for their 5 foot gauge, but then the Balisovic Revolution happened and it was sent back to Baldwin and re gauge back to US railroad standards. Plus your Train stories have got this train lover to subscribe to your channel.

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  6 років тому +1

      Matthew Gustafson the reason SDC has Frisco everywhere is because they are the ones who originally laid down the track. They did it free in exchange for having their logo and name on the trains as a means of advertising. Now that the Frisco is gone, I believe that SDC is the only operating railroad legally using and called the Frisco anymore.

    why in the world would the conductor have a real shotgun? why isn't it a cap gun? i find that extremely hard to believe that in today's society that would be allowed i could understand if that's what they did when the park first opened way way back but not now.

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 років тому +4

      it's a real shotgun. Many places that still do an "old west" style show will use real guns for the authentic look and sound. Cap guns look and sound like exactly that- and sorry but that's crappy. There are numerous procedures for safe handling and to keep it away from guests. They actually have an insert put in them so they can't shoot regular shotgun shells but only specially ordered blanks. But if you want it to look and sound real, then you go with real.
