I like the fact that it doesn’t even have a ditch lights. It looks very well-maintained beautiful piece of equipment.

Awesome! Hard to believe that features like the B&M high number boards with marker lights were maintained and not cut off sometime in its lifetime. When you see the single stack and front sandbox, you instantly know it's first-gen. Kudos to the shop magicians keeping it going. Thanks for posting and Happy New Year!

super cool - thanks for the vid. That old SW-1 looks so tiny next to those modern tank cars! Great to see they are keeping it in good shape.

EMD stopped making parts for locomotives like these thinking they could force people to buy new switchers. That little engine outlasted the company that built it and tried to kill it. As long as something is maintained properly there's no reason why it should not last forever.

I worked on the one in Tipton Indiana. I did a complete rewire of the low voltage systems back to the original schematic.
It is a fun little locomotive and the folks at the elevator are awesome.
It was built in late summer of nineteen forty one for Con Edison in Chicago and worked the Lasall street power station which was later a nuclear unit. This little locomotive is known as the Atom Powered SW1. In case you are wondering, it says so across its nose and has the Atomic symbol on the cab sides. It also has the Con Edison clerestory roofed cab. I feel very privileged to have prolonged her useful life. She should live to see 100 revenue years.

Steelton and Highspire R.R. Had End cab switchers. 2 sat on a spur track for about at least 5 years. I retired from The Steelton Plant rail mill. From what i heard now there is only one left. Heard through the grapevine they scrapped them all but.If i remember correctly they were built in the early 1950s. Well I was just lucky to find a UA-cam video of the engine they use is a EMD SW 1200. Attractive engine painted red white and blue

Beautiful video but I have to say as someone who worked in a rail yard he would be suspended if he pulled a stunt like that at 8min in the video he goes between the cars to readjust the couplings but the cars are not 50 ft apart and no 3 point protection. Please do better!!

    • @Trains21

Good question... Journal boxes still in tact... could be a clever disguise for sake of maintaining a historical appearance, though. It's not like she leaves the interchange... it's possible she still holds the plain bearings.
